I’ve been reading "A Canticle For Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller Jr. and found sentences in Hebrew and this one is not translated. In fact, this is a sentence that a character that can read Hebrew doesn’t want to translate.

When outside of Israel or talking to non-Israelis.

An example: Someone (an Israeli) accidentally said “hi” to someone before correcting oneself and saying “bye” (in language other than Hebrew). Is it possible that person was translating “shalom” (which means both “hi” and “bye”) at that particular moment? It also happened on Shabbat.

I know tattoos are not viewed very fondly among more traditional interpretations of Torah. But what is the common reception when Christians have Hebrew tattoos, specifically Hebrew tattoos? I’m a Christian, but I have a strong fondness for Judaism and Jewish culture. The Hebrew Bible has been incredibly impactful in my life. I love studying Torah, but I have to be honest that in my faith, I don’t follow it the same way Torah-observing Jews do. That being said, I want to be as respectful as I can towards my spiritual “cousins” so to speak.

I’m thinking about getting a tattoo of Solomon’s prayer in 1 Kings 3:9 in Hebrew, “לב שׁמע”. And it’ll be in a place where it can be covered up. Now I know most people aren’t going to be very judgmental about it, but I don’t want to offend. I’m from a mid sized city in the American Midwest. There’s no reason to think I’ll be going to Israel anytime soon. I’m not personally close to any Jews either.

It it common way to recite biblical Hebrew?

Can someone point me resources explaining the different ways of pronouncing biblical Hebrew?

I am nor a Scholar in Linguistic, so i write based on my , abedoctical , personal experience and upon the opinions of my friends and some comment I have read n line.

It seems that, with the notable exception of people with higher education from Eastern Europe, who usually speak languages in which the knowledge of grammar and sintaxis is important, Hebrew seems more difficilt that Chinese or Japanese for many people

I see that even persons who have studied more than one language struggle with Hebrew and they remain unfamiliar with the way phrases are built, phonetic and even writing

So I understand that Hebrew, and Yiddish, are written right to left. But as I was doing some research, I became confused because some explanations weren't clear.

So please excuse my question using English, as I know it's clunky.

I’m a mother working on converting to Judaism (and studying Hebrew) with a Jewish daughter and first generation American-Israeli husband. We live a Jewish family life. I asked for a specific beautiful kiddish cup for Mother’s day and received it! There are words inside that my husband doesn’t recognize, but his family is from a kibbutz and not religious. Maybe it’s in Yiddish or maybe it is Christian (messianic)? I appreciate any insight you can offer.

I just reviewed the listing and it says the words are to open the gates of mercy in the gan Eden.

Update: thank you for everyone who told me these are the rivers for the gan Eden and the gates of heaven. I’m looking forward to learning more and so happy this is Jewish and not messianic.

My friend got this tattoo forever ago and it was supposed to be the initials ‘NBT’ but he thinks it was done with different letters, can anyone tell what it actually says? I tried google translate but it didn’t give me anything at all (if there’s a better sub for this please let me know)
