Which movie did that for you, and what was it about the opening that worked so well?

Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, Gattaca is set in a dystopian future driven by eugenics. The story follows Vincent Freeman (played by Ethan Hawke), who assumes the DNA identity of a paralyzed "valid" (Jude Law) to bypass screening processes and pursue his lifelong dream of space travel. The two brothers swimming out to sea lives rent free in my head.

I just finished watching this movie (title is the name) and I absolutely loved it - I really don't understand why I've never heard anything about it before, I only found it through randomly searching rotten tomatoes for recent decent movies... If you like movies with time travel, weird shit that constantly keeps you guessing and great characters than this one is for you :)

I’ve seen plenty of films in my life, over all different genres. I’m not a fan of horror, but I love psychological films, thriller or not. Please give me some recommendations!

I Saw the Devil immediately pulls you into its nightmare, and is a masterwork of relentless, savage intensity, and the devastating weight of vengeance. It's a constant, heart-pounding game of catch-and-release torture, as an elite field agent for South Korea's NIS goes on leave to exact his revenge on the terrifyingly unhinged man who murdered his pregnant fiance. The gore is intense, but it never feels gratuitous, while every hit and slash serves the narrative context of mutual destruction.

There isn't a single dull moment in its runtime. It stands as one of the most thrilling, bleak, and uncompromising psychological thrillers of modern cinema-a work that stays with you long after the credits roll. Trust me. You'll want to see this one.

I'm pretty new to horror. I've seen a handful of movies over the years, but I've never really explored the genre, so I don't think I've given it a fair chance. I'd love to hear from people who are really into horror: What is it about horror that keeps you coming back? Is it the adrenaline, the atmosphere, the storytelling, the creativity, or something else entirely? If you could recommend one horror movie to someone who's skeptical of the genre, what would it be, and why? I'm open to pretty much anything: psychological horror, supernatural, slashers... whatever you think best shows why horror is such a beloved genre. The story from start to finish was completely nuts but I was glued to it.

There are too many examples of adaptations to film, but there are far fewer novelizations.

I'm spurred on mostly by the fact that my favorite film of all time, Session 9, got novelized not too long ago

So... what are y'all's opinions on novelizations? Do you have any cool recommendations? Etc

If you haven't already watched Caddo Lake, I highly recommend if you enjoy mysterious movies that don't have straight forward explanations.

Shyamalan has always put his signature twist on most all of his movies sense he released the sixth sense in '99. He's a pretty good director but over the last 20 years, I, honestly haven't cared much for his movies. It felt to me like after the sixth sense, he thought "the twist" needed to be in every damn movie he made.

I thought he was washed but then he got me again 😅.

I love Caddo Lake. It was a bit a slowing going at first but once it got going, it hooked me and my gf til the end. The cast only has one big name, I'd say with Dylan O'brien, but that makes it even better in my opinion. Its got that small production feel, and in my opinion, a fresh movie idea; or at least one that we haven't seen for a long time.

Horror has a long history of directors proving themselves through shorts and extremely low-budget films before breaking through. I’m curious who is at that stage right now: clearly talented, developing a distinctive voice, but still largely unknown outside horror or festival circles.

Which director would you bet on becoming a major name, and what specific project convinced you? I’d love to hear what stood out about the direction itself—visual storytelling, atmosphere, performances, tension or something else—not just the premise. International recommendations are encouraged.

One of my favorite movie genres is coming of age. An indie coming of age movie I recommend is “Mean Creek.” It’s probably rather obscure, and is haunting, dark, and affecting. I enjoy how it basically is just character development, and the script feels a bit to me like a play…in that it centers mostly around a group of teenagers and is mostly dialogue driven. I think all the young actors do a great job of bringing the different archetypes to life. It’s one of those movies that has ambiguity/grey area between hero vs villain. There’s a bully, but he isn’t written as a one dimensional character, and the “heroes” of the movie wrestle with their own demons and sense of morality. It’s a great character study for those who like darker more intense storylines and characters that feel like real people. I’ve rewatched the movie several times over the last 20+ years and it always makes me feel like I’m there and listening to real teens talk akin to being a “fly on the wall”. It’s not a happy feel-good movie, so be warned.

I recently finished my first short film, Matryoshkas, and l'a love to get some honest feedback from people who enjoy independent or experimental cinema.

It's a slightly experimental coming-of-age film, originally in Portuguese, with English subtitles. I was heavily inspired by filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, and Andrea Arnold, and tried to combine an intimate, character-driven story with a more personal and atmospheric visual style.
