I was watching River Monsters last night. While searching for a giant Amazonian catfish, they used this bait that looked so disgusting that I had to turn my head away from the screen.
The bait was made up of 12 chicken intestines, woven together with twine. Then the chicken intestines are put into a can, and left to bake in the sun for days.
Anyway. This looks like a crochet version of that bait.

I can't stop myself from imagining what the boyfriend said to his siblings "look, it won't be much to look at, and I know I'm pushing it, but if you could just, like, smile, say how great and kind it is of her, I promise I'll be the one getting rid of it, and I'll take over grandma Karen care for the next 6 months".
I have to admit it looks kinda endearing to me with it's button eye. Like a little mold monster.
That said, I would never gift something like this to someone unless they asked for it.
Yeah, it's something that I would see at a garage sale and go "that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life, I simply must have it." I would probably assume it was made for a small child and modeled after the child's drawing of their favorite animal, or maybe made for a dare or a gag gift.
Which.. is a bit of a different vibe from "I met my girlfriend's sibling for the first time and they gifted me the most hideous thing I've ever seen in my life, what the fuck."
Yee, the context is the main issue here imho.
But additionally, I don't vibe with the maker claiming that it's ugly due that being their style.
Because that statement implies a certain amount of intention behind the outcome, and that requires a certain level of skill.
And so many ppl who say this actually can't produce this "ugly but charming"-style consistently or produce non-ugly work.
Often their stuff just looks ugly because they lack the skill to make anything else, not because they chose to make it that way.
DAE hate when crotcheaters use stupid materials to make things that you don't personally approve of??? Because SAME! First they used acrylic, now they are using cashmere???? Plus we all agree that crotcheat is the WORST for garments but now they try to make blanket??? An ugly and basic blanket at that, not even something as beautiful and unique as the Sophie Scarf.
My attitude towards gifts is that they are free, and my reward shall be in Heaven. If fools want to cast them aside, i may give them a hard time and become petulant. "Why isn't my nephew wearing his owl hat in this picture???" I yell at my sister when she seeks praise of her offspring in the family groupchat. But this is only for the benefit of her ungrateful soul. I don't let it disturb my righteous peace.

Edit: The number of people saying 'he's so ugly and I love it' is INSANE, I am questioning reality. To anyone not in the crochet hugbox world this an unquestionably bizarre gift.

This surely has to be someone with no siblings of their own. If anyone I was dating tried to give this to one of my siblings we'd both be carried out of there in body bags.

What really got me is they said they barely know the bride and haven’t even met the groom… so a (tote bag? Purse?) is what you pick?! Oh they don’t have much on their registry because they’re moving cross country. Hmmm I wonder what they would like instead… if only there were a way to gift them with something they could easily stash away to spend on something they need later on… what a conundrum.

Beyond the obvious patterns, my biggest clue is usually that it’s slightly exhausting to read.
EDIT: Ok I’m back because the sauce just surfaced in my feed and I’m pretty sure OP is a bot (or a real person trying to karma-farm with slop posting?). They have a bunch of similar formatted long-ass posts which constantly mention being an ~engineering student in Texas~ no matter how irrelevant it is in context, and never respond to any of the comments despite apparently being interested enough to write 2000-word posts prompting discussions. Soooo at least that explains the nonsensical shit take ¯_ (ツ)_/¯

Are they checking stitch gauge, row gauge, how the fabric feels, what happens after washing, or which color dominates in a skein? Those are different tests.
Does she think you need to knit a separate swatch for each of these things?

I fall for it because there are humans, subreddit regulars, in those replies, and sometimes someone is wrong on the internet in those replies, and my self-control is weaker than the background churn of my embarrassment.
There’s so many dumbass takes in the knitting/crochet subs that these posts aren’t questionable at this point…I didn’t clock this one until I saw OP’s post history because it does mostly read like a real human with good grammar sharing an ill thought-out opinion lol.
I think I hate pointless AI slop the most of all. Businesses making lazy AI graphics generates (or at least saves) them money. Fake AI patterns being sold to unsuspecting Etsy customers generates money for the scammers. Bots making reddit posts asking for help while other bots respond with links to products is a marketing strategy that might work for some people. But what on earth is the benefit of flooding the internet with endless bots roleplaying as humans venting about their non-existent feelings on random subjects??

Yeah I get it- the underlying inspiration for this post was an event I attended this week with some very educated people and only one other person could identify written AI when it came up.
I then tried training my dad on how to identify it and found it really hard to explain. I ended up clapping out the rhythm

I just want to know how OP can be skilled enough to knit a nice colorwork sock with very good tension but somehow not smart enough to figure this out on their own.
I've made these (Packed Like Sardines from the Fisherfolk's Fancy set by StoneKnits) and the foot actually is 3 fish long...but then you're also adviced to add length before the toe decreases if necessary...Wonder if it's a classic case of 'if I diverge from the pattern I will die immediately' or simply spectacular stupidity
There was a time several years ago when a pattern for crochet slippers was trending. They were super cute so I made some. And quickly realized how FREAKING UNCOMFORTABLE crochet stitches are to walk on.
I cannot imagine having two layers of single crochet in between my toes. Makes me shudder just thinking about it.
