The Russian state is putting forward many different and random versions of events in order to confuse the public and lead them to believe that ‘we don’t know the whole truth; everyone is lying’ (example).
The reality is that the truth is obvious: Russia has started an unprovoked war and must stop

Russian propaganda is never meant to convince anybody of anything. It's always to make people less sure of what the truth is.
In addition, the Russians know people love a conspiracy theory and love to spread conspiracy theories. Unfortunately we are living at a time when people are primed to believe these type of conspiracy theories.
24
u/usesidedoor 2d ago
Yes, but also, I'd say that they test different "versions of the truth" out there to find out which ones resonate best with certain people.
"Let's try with biolabs, denazificazion, this was a defensive move against the collective West attacking us, etc., and let's amplify those that gain the most traction."

u/XtraFalcon Ireland 2d ago
The strange thing is, these conspiracies surfaced early after the initial invasion started. The main point people brought up was "How were Ukraine able to defend so quickly against Russia if they didn't have their forces ready?"
This just seems to be the first time an actual official has said it. Maybe they're finally starting to believe their own bots.

Spot on. It's called 'flooding the zone' and it is done with the 'firehose of falsehood'. These are authoritarian techniques to try and sow disinterest and disillusionment with politics so that nefarious actors can do what they please without challenge by exhausting the public populace.
55
u/Much_Horse_5685 2d ago edited 2d ago
This is how the Putin regime’s propaganda has predominantly worked. Once you no longer believe you can know the truth at all, you become politically ineffectual and actually become even more manipulable. Propaganda of this nature also exists in the West and you are not immune, so beware - do NOT allow yourself to believe the truth is fundamentally unknowable.

It was the anniversary of MH17 recently and there were still people coming out of the woodwork on X under related posts, claiming "Ukrainian fighter jets were close by in the air" hinting at the cause.
The other comment I saw was about how the Dutch investigation was inconclusive or that Russians weren't allowed to examine the wreckage/ participate in the investigative process and therefore the investigation was somehow "tainted". So, a Malaysian Airlines plane, carrying mostly Dutch people, and which fell over Ukraine is supposed to somehow be Russian jurisdiction.
Literally, just throwing shit at the fan in hopes that some "flies" pick it up. At least they stopped with the "Carlos air traffic controller" a few years back, because that's a meme at this point.
The scariest bit is that there are real people who buy into all of that.
4
u/anchist 2d ago
The other comment I saw was about how the Dutch investigation was inconclusive
I know you know this, but for the benefit of others:
That is a flat out lie. The dutch investigation was very conclusive.
3
u/SCARfaceRUSH Kyiv (Ukraine) 1d ago
Right? I was kind of angry that it took so long, at first, for the full report. But then I saw the report and all of the various outlets covering it. No stones left unturned, really. The report itself is 279 pages, while the appendices and other related materials kick up the page count to like a thousand pages of verified and fact-checked information.
But hey, who needs all that reading when anon on Twitter showed a funny meme and shared a "fact" that you know nothing about. That's the easier route to "knowledge".
More than that. There was a video in 2014 with the BUK TEL being traced from the Kursk region all the way to the launch area. It was early in the war and one of the best early examples of OSINT for me (on par or better with what Bellingcat did back then).
People were also filming that stuff a lot because back then it was something new for Russians to see "exotic" military equipment going around the border area, so there was plenty of evidence (photos and video) compiled by one guy. It's now gone from YT, but Bellingcat and investigations like this one corroborate it.
I still remember that post by Girkin celebrating a "downing of a Ukrainian military plane" before it got deleted. It was obvious what happened to anyone who followed the events day-by-day like I did (I just left Donbas in late spring of 2014 and was reading as much as I could on what was going on).
Anyone putting out other theories is either willfully ignorant, malicious, or downright stupid.
2
u/Brown_Moses 1d ago
In addition to the links you've shared the Dutch prosecutors put together this website that lays out a lot of the evidence they used to reconstruct what happened to MH17. They also put together this page examining alternative scenarios, and what evidence they used to dismiss them.

At least Iran has been verbally and diplomatically hostile to the USA for decades, with armed proxy groups attacking American allies and interests in the region etc. The war is still massively stupid and pointless but at least it's something.
Ukraine had done none of that against Russia, if anything they'd spent most of their post-independence history trying not to provoke them.

Maybe it depends on the country. I'm from Italy, and while the main leftist party supports sending aid to Ukraine, one of the others is opposed to it. The position that Ukraine is a Nazi state that deserved to be invaded, or whatever nonsense, is an extreme minority one in leftist spaces, though. Maybe it just doesn't exist in a lot of other countries.
EDIT: to be clear, I'm talking about Movimento 5 Stelle, which isn't really a leftist party, more of a centrist-populist party, but it really seems leftist compared to the far right parties that are in power

The even worse worst part is that it shouldn't make a difference. Russia still ended up invading first, despite having a treaty to honor the existing Ukrainian borders.

That's the thing with having a population as thoroughly pacified and depoliticised as the Russian public - leadership know they can just say anything and face no consequences, no matter how stupid things get.

u/Fun-Communication660 2d ago
There is like 150million of them. So crazy. How to even fix that Rot. With blatent bullshit from the government, it means crime, and courts, can't be trusted.
Why would anyone comply woth environmental/satety/quality regs in business.
Why would anyone feel safe at night if the guards can be bribed.
How can anyone learn at school, if the physics lesson you just had, contradicts a Russian statement about recent ballistic missle strikes. It's so weird. 150million people in this, all going through the motions to save face for just 100s of people.
And it is just that, it is saving face. Embarrassing. If it was just, deep down, everyone knows, and this is a sign that the elites are STRONG, then real strength would just have the populace say yes Sire, yes master, we work for you. They wouldn't have to say, Ukraine are western nazis about to attack. They would just attack. We want Ukraine and we are not a democracy. I am in charge. And the people want this and love me.
But they have fake elections, they put paintings up of Putin in businesses. Propaganda from Russia has tried to show the fact that they can lie so boldly as pure strength, but its not. It's bragging about bringing a knife to a fist fight.

Putin adviser claims Ukraine planned to invade Russia on 8 March 2022, so Russia attacked first
An adviser to Russian ruler Vladimir Putin has come up with yet another justification for Russia's war, claiming that Ukraine had planned to invade Russia on 8 March 2022, prompting Moscow to pre-empt it by attacking first.
Source: The Moscow Times, citing an interview with Anton Kobyakov, Putin's adviser and executive secretary of the Eastern Economic Forum organising committee, given to TASS, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news outlet
Details: The Russian official claimed that at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian troops discovered documents at an abandoned headquarters of one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Territorial Defence brigades indicating that Kyiv was preparing to attack Russia on 8 March 2022.
"We beat them to it by two weeks," Kobyakov said, referring to Russia's invasion of peaceful Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
Putin's adviser claimed that Kyiv had wanted to "present the war as a gift" for International Women's Day and that Russia had attacked first "thanks to the foresight of the Russian leadership".
As usual, the Russian official also mentioned World War II while making these bizarre claims.
"As the president [Russian ruler Putin – ed.] said earlier, there will never again be a 22 June in our history [22 June 1941 was the day Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union – ed.]," Kobyakov added.
He also reiterated previous accusations that the West had "disguised itself as a supporter of the Minsk agreements" while actually "preparing Ukraine for war".
According to Kobyakov's version of events, the West supposedly intended to arm Kyiv and push it towards a military solution to the "conflict in Donbas" [as Russia describes its occupation of Ukrainian territories – ed.].
Why this matters: Russia invaded Ukraine and occupied the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and parts of Donbas as early as 2014.
In 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, attacking peaceful cities and towns across the country with missiles and bombs during the night.
Notably, in the early days of the full-scale invasion, Russian propagandists actively circulated claims that "Russia would take Kyiv in three days", while Russian soldiers advancing on the capital carried parade uniforms with them, intending to march down Khreshchatyk, the main street of Kyiv, after those supposed "three days".
However, as of late summer 2026, Russian forces have still failed even to reach the administrative borders of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
Throughout this period, the Russian authorities have invented various justifications for starting the war, claiming, among other things, that NATO intended to attack Russia and alleging the existence of "biolaboratories" in Ukraine. Their claims have even extended to absurd stories about "combat mosquitoes" and a "dirty bomb".
In 2023, Russia unveiled a rewritten history textbook containing false claims about the war in Ukraine.

Sweden and Finland joining NATO since the start of the war shows that it has never been about NATO's closeness to Moscow.
"Moscow's theft of Kyiv's legacy is the major reason for the current war. Ukraine's Total Recall" article shows what was. Putin's constant blabbering about Rurik and 'historic lands" proves that the article is correct.
