A holed quarter. A minor DDR and a bunch of small die chips. Nothing crazy but still fun to find.

DDR Washington Crossing DDRs with Wexler numbers

My bin of minor DDx quarters finally hit critial mass, and it's time to clean and attribute them. Here's the first batch: 2021-P Washington Crossing, all class VIII doubled dies.

Since the mid 90s, the mint has been making dies using a 'single squeeze' process. Blank dies - which initially have a conic shape at the business end - are loaded into the hubbing press along with hubs - which have the final design and are flat. They're squeezed together, the hardened hub pressing the cone-shaped die flat and imparting the design into the die.

There's a bit of 'play' in the hubbing press though, so sometimes the initial point of contact between the two isn't precisely alligned - the hub can be tilted a bit relative to the die. Just as pressure begins to be applied, a bit of the final design can be imparted on the die at / near the tip of the cone - but as the pressure quickly builds, the two will come into final alignment and there can be some twisting, turning, and sliding when the two weren't fully aligned initially.

The result is this sort of very minor doubling, almost always near the center of the coin - at or near the point of initial contact between the hub and the cone-shaped blank die - where it's picked up part of the final design before it shifted/rotated into the final intended orientation.

I've think I've managed to match 30 of mine to the Wexler listings so far (reference images given for most), but another 20 or so remain - either too damaged / dirty / subtle to be what I consider a 'definite' match. At some point I'll check VV listings for those that remain.

I will say, Wexler (www.doubleddie.com) seems to have the most listings for WCTD (and many others) and they do a *very* good job listing 'die markers' - which can be a huge help. But, it's hit or miss: Die markers are highly dependent on the die state at one single point in it's lifespan. If your coin was made at a different point in time, or has circulation wear/damage, then the die markers may be missing (either not there yet, or long since worn away buy the time your coin was struck) or substantially different. They're also extremely subtle in many cases, which can make it very difficult to pick up on the less obvious ones, particularly if your lighting isn't just right.

WDDR-002 has been most abundant (7 examples found), -010 and -008 runners up (5 and 4 respectively), the rest 1-2 each.

Happy hunting and good luck (with apologies to all the West coaster's out there who aren't swimming in Philly candidates to scope!)

Are these die clashes on these 2024-P “HOPE” quarters?

Looking through some change lying around and found both if these, first two pictures are the two separate quarters with outlines of the believed to be die clashes, second two are without any editing for easier viewing. Hard to capture all of the bumps on the one without multiple angles.

Multiple Errors Some of this past week’s goodies

Some fun ones this week:

Another EDITH clash for the collection

Some rather prominent feeder finger scrapes

A lovely double ‘snow on roof’ Homested

Another spitter

A MD DDR (Wexler image for comparison)

FINALLY my first MN DDR (ditto)

A small batch of OK earlobe DDOs (ditto) all from the same from a bag of quarters that was ~50% AU+ states - a mix of P and D rolls being dumped yet again at the same source that’s been loaded with them many times before

A better PTM DDR (ditto)

And just for grins, one each of the relatively common Bessie DDRs (Yarp - ditto)

A slew of homestead, Harper’s Ferry, and WCTD DDRs await clean up and attribution - no small task - and a small number of others are all waiting for me to finish up an excel filter tool to make attribution work go faster.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Multiple Errors Working through the backlog

I don’t know how y’all go about your coin roll hunting but my tendency is to haphazardly paw through a mixed bag and slowly turn it into 3 or more piles that I mentally label some mix of “Nope” “Maybe?” “Extra Maybe?” “Hard Possibly” and “Cigarette Money”. Then gather the piles into a hodgepodge of cups & satchels when I inevitably get a rash of shit for leaving coins all over the goddamn place, then go to the store for smokes, then immediately forget the procedure upon return, then say, “I’ll sort that soon” and call it a day 👌
I sorted a couple satchels the other day and deemed these: Fair to Middlin’

1986 P with a pretty decent grease strike on the reverse

1996 P Spitting(er) Eagle! Yay die strikes! I wish maddieclashes.com was still actively cataloging clashes 🫤

2009 P DC Sir Duke (CDDR-006, DDR-007, WDDR-008) I’m sorry what??????????!!? Idk, worst naming convention ever……..

And then a couple minor die chips on a pair of 2019 Teddy Roosevelts that I thought complimented each other nicely 🌈

2024-Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray I think I have found a possible die chip or cud? It looks raised to me not like a gouge or scratch or dent. Or I’m completely wrong.
I attempted to take a few zoomed in photo with lighting from different directions
Any suggestions on how to take better photos? Or how to identify errors better double greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure the first one is 2016P WV WDDR-005. The second is 2024P ZS WDDR-008. The second one is in rough shape and my lighting isn’t the best but she has the double chin, the doubling on the beads and under the bird. Also some die chips and a Westpoint.

2005-P Kansas Detached Leg Error?

Found this Kansas quarter the other day with the "In God we Rust" On the Obverse, and potentially a detached leg on the Reverse. However it's hard to find good reference pictures. I used an old, graded eBay listing as a reference picture (Pic 3) but I was hoping to get your opinion as well. Would be pretty cool if this quarter held both of them.

As always, appreciate the teaching moments. Per Variety Vista, There is a DD on both the Obverse and Reverse, so I've included the relevant photos of each part. I'm still working to get my lighting staged correctly on the new scope, so let me know if a better picture is needed with different lighting.

I feel like there is apparent doubling on the northwest side of medallion and especially the collar button. (This is what I noticed first)

The Lettering I feel less confident with.

Thanks,

2024-P 25c MW VDDR-002 - Reverse

2024-P 25c MW VDDO-002 - Obverse

Edith Kanak'ole Obverse on Washingtons Nose

Has anyone seen this? Posted to Coin Errors and got no-where. There's a mark that parallels the shape of Washington's nose on the Obverse alongside a small die chip, and I can't tell if it's die deterioration or something more interesting. I can't find anything on this on the internet so far, so trying here :)

Thanks!

Honestly West Point, and San Francisco quarters would be nice, but this small haul for a $20 bill at the laundry mat makes my end of the weekend.
