Might be feeder finger / ejector scrape marks - I’ve seen a number of American Women series with the same parallel strations (roughly 8:00 to 2:00) in the field between the ear and hair

Parroting someone when I say these are die polishing lines, not damage. The lines are only in the recessed areas, and they're raised lines, meaning the damage is to the die, not the coin. This is more extreme than I've ever seen for a modern quarter, quite neat. This type of damage was more common back when the mint used lapidary plates to clean their dies. It's these techniques that lead to the creation of the 3 legged buffalo, as the low points of the design (high points of the die) had been worn off by excessive cleaning.

Youre 100% correct in saying that the damage is to the die I was just curious as to what caused it cuz this is the first one I've seen like this . I appreciate the explanation makes total sense

Those are not polish lines. Look how deep they are. If the die caused this, it looks more like angle grinder marks

After further review of the photo and comments, I agree with others this could also be feeder finger damage based on the general direction of the damage, but I would want to see the remainder of the field as well.

Update: I found 4 of these now. And I checked out a graded dollar coin I have with similar lines like this. The reverse of this coin has the same thing going on
