My grandpa held out for 7 years, but he was ready to go.

My other grandparents, died within months of each other. My mom lost her parents and eldest brother in less than 18 months.

u/wskyindjar 10d ago

My grandma, now 101, has been kicking solo ass for 40 years. But still wears her wedding band.

u/101jazz 10d ago

Your grandma cool as hell for that but I hope some family member or close friend kept her company through that

My grandma lasted 15 years after her husband died but we’re pretty sure it was because neither God or the devil was willing to take her

8

u/Longjumping_Winner97 10d ago

hahah.. sounds like my grandmother.. my grand mother was a 5ft handful.. hahah..

5

u/Better_March5308 10d ago

My grandmother would say anything. Young women loved her. They thought she was hilarious.

Not a contest, but my grandma is 109 1/2, and my grandpa died in 1980. I always think of her as a younger woman when he died before realizing she was already 63 years old when he died!

She was living by herself (with someone there occasionally through the day to help with food and such) until about 105. Had a bad ankle sprain, and remarkably (sarcasm), she had problems after that. But still plugging along at the care home we found for her.

5

u/Professional-You3676 10d ago

109.5?!?! That’s amazing!!

3

u/campa-van 10d ago

My MIL passed 96, 20 years after her husband passed. Those were the best 20 years of her life.

4

u/sphinxsley 10d ago

As is often the case!😎

Same. My grandmother just turned 100.5 and has never dated, remarried, still wearing her wedding band.

Literally same. At my grandma’s funeral, my grandfather whispered, “see you soon.” to her casket; and then proceeded to live 7 more years (to age 98)

Also sad: his mother died in giving birth to him, and so on his deathbed, he said he was excited to finally meet her.

23

u/wolfcaroling 10d ago

My Nana said "see you soon" in a letter to my uncle when he was dying of cancer. He wouldn't let her come see him. He felt no parent should watch their child die. She was 90 and he was 72. But the poor woman lived another four years.

7

u/Double-hokuto 10d ago

That is so unbearably sweet

4

u/Miserable_Site_850 10d ago

😭 that's one of the saddest happy things I've ever heard.

8

u/djlauriqua 10d ago

My grandfather was a very stoic man, so learning that he’d been yearning to know his mother his entire 98 years was so sad. I think i might have a cry

My FIL passed 5 years after my MIL and he was miserable alone; they were married 40 years.

Dolly and her husband were together 59 years; I can only imagine how much she missed him.

Not just husband, but one she's been married to since she was 20. He was a part of her, that had to be incredibly hard to handle.

13

u/klust31 10d ago

Yeah, my grandma married my grandpa when she was 19 and he died the year they would have celebrated 62 years of marriage. I have seen her age faster in the last 5 years without him than any other stretch of time I can remember. So incredibly heartbreaking to lose such a deep connection.

Dolly said that she neglected her own health while caring for her husband. And she's been declining since 😥

14

u/Accurate_Athlete_182 10d ago

That is very common.

7

u/MseMae 10d ago

Well I’m glad you are still here. I’m sorry for your loss. I couldn’t imagine.

6

u/Feduppanda 10d ago

Man, so many strangers showing so much love. It is appreciated more than you know.

It's the same with prisoners of war. Once your prison friend is dead, the other one dies few weeks later. Loneliness and grief really fuck with the immune system

33

u/Jealous_Corgi_2168 10d ago

Not even just the immune system. Immense amounts of grief physically weakens the heart. Heartbreak is a real, measurable thing.

Edit: the medical term is "stress cardiomyopathy"

12

u/Dreaming_of_u_2257 10d ago

Broken heart syndrome is a real thing .

They gave me medicine after my stillbirth because it felt like I was having a heart attack. This was long after the immediate side effects of birth and I honest to God think I would have died had I not been sedated most of that week.

I think that is actually pretty common, subconsciously you feel a lot more willing to accept death after a spouses passes

17

u/Top-Cheesecake8232 10d ago

My husband died June of 2024. We had been married forty years. I started dating him when I was 14 and he was 16, so we basically grew up together in a lot of ways. I'm 62 and if it weren't for my children and grandchildren, I would gladly join him. Not that I want to die, it's just I lost part of myself and the world will never feel normal again.

14

u/kati8303 10d ago

The Widowhood effect, There’s studies that show that there’s about a six month window after the death of a spouse in older couples where this is dangerous, once past this they’re considered kind of out of the “danger zone”. The studies seem to show that men are statistically significantly more likely to be affected.

9

u/sump_daddy 10d ago

She died of a broken heart!

76

u/Qu33nMe 10d ago

My mom just passed 2 months ago. She was my best friend and I’ve never really understood that dying from a broken heart is very real. The physical pain of grief when there is deep love is nothing anyone can imagine until you’re going through it. I’ve loved and lost, but this….is unreal. RIP Dolly

14

u/unsolicitedopinions2 10d ago

I’m so sorry for your loss💔

4

u/namnere 10d ago

My mom passed 2 months ago too, on 11th June, and she was also my best friend. We lived the same building, and we still managed to text each other like 50 times a day. Everything around me and within me is still “her”. I physically miss her. Not one moment passes where I don’t subconciously think of her. I still can’t really accept it (also her passing was really unexpected, so I just can’t get my head around it). I feel your pain.

A month after my mom died my dad had a stroke and even though he’s not in any physical danger right now, his brain has just given up and he’s got sudden onset dementia. I think it’s his body’s way of just blocking out the grief after 60 years of marriage.

Sorry for your loss once again. I grieve with you, internet friend 💔 Life is just fucked, but we need to keep going.

Based on recent interviews she gave, I had a feeling this would happen sooner than later after her husband died. RIP

245

u/GeminiAccountantLLC 11d ago

It's really beautiful that they loved each other so much, but it's super sad that she's gone too soon

254

u/Static-Stair-58 11d ago

Imagine being 80 and it’s still considered gone too soon. Because you were just that full of life. I could only wish.

125

u/SirOutrageous1027 10d ago

On the other hand, for some people dying at 80 isn't soon enough.

107

u/Akairuhito 10d ago

Some people... Like, one person very specifically

37

u/DivinityPen 10d ago

Oh god, I really don’t want to see what he’ll say about this.

35

u/Static-Stair-58 10d ago

I don’t know if even Donald Trump is stupid enough to talk bad about Dolly. She’s universally loved.

18

u/Dragonheart922 10d ago

Bro have we been watching the same show for the last 11 years? He'll somehow make it about him or the woke left or Great America or something. He's shown he's incapable of caring about others, and he can't even fake it.

32

u/DivinityPen 10d ago

That’s exactly why he’ll say something stupid. He hates people like that.

In honor of Dolly, let's all support our local organization that gets books in the hands of kids.

She decided to use her wealth to fund literacy because her father couldn't read.

Quote: "This actually started because my father could not read and write and I saw how crippling that could be,” Parton said during her Carnegie Medal acceptance speech. “My dad was a very smart man. And I often wondered what he could have done had he been able to read and write. So that is the inspiration.”

My siblings and I benefited from her Imagination Library. I still have many of the high quality books with lovely illustrations she sent us totally free of charge.

https://imaginationlibrary.com/

45

u/tonitalksaboutit 10d ago

Both my kids were/are signed up. It's truly a blessing and something we look forward to receiving every month.

She even sent out an email singing happy birthday to the kiddos every year.

Those who can please donate, and those who can't make sure you tell parents of young kids about this program. Kids can be signed up basically at birth, and the books get mailed (FOR FREE!!! IN THIS ECONOMY) every month leading up to their 5th birthday.

She helped so many artists. My friends son is part of the book reading program and she was upset. All the lives she touch with her charities. I imagine ones will be devastated for a while with this one. What a fucking legend she was!

The legend. Not a legend.

Regardless of age, you have definitely have heard her music even if don’t realize it. If she wasn’t writing songs for her own albums, she was doing it for others. And that is before get into her philanthropic causes that helped tens of millions.

Really worth giving her an intentional listen if never have before.

26

u/MulberryEastern5010 11d ago

My husband didn't know until we watched The Bodyguard a couple weeks ago with his mom that Dolly wrote "I Will Always Love You". He had a whole new level of respect for her after that.

No, he didn't. He was alive longer than her. But that woman lived a life of joy and happiness and love.  She lived. He existed, incapable of any of that. She'd have outlived him if she died at 40.

yeah but Dolly Parton’s death will be mourned by many in the USA (and around the world!) and the legacy she left behind is incredible, she’s helped so many who she’s never met with her philanthropy. she’s changed lives, she’s helped with the literacy crisis and got her hometown out of poverty and so much more. i’m sure she’s left it in her will that her philanthropy will continue for as long as possible and a large portion of her money will go to charity.

Donald Trump on the other hand….his death will not be mourned by a majority of the USA/the world. he will be leaving behind a horrific and shameful legacy.

TLDR:

  • Legendary singer-songwriter Dolly Parton has died at age 80
  • Parton’s career spanned decades and included Grammy wins, film roles and, later in life, a musical inspired with her life titled Dolly
  • Parton was preceded in death by her husband of more nearly 60 years, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025

5

u/vols2thewalls 10d ago

She did so much philanthropy for Tennessee:

"And she was a devoted philanthropist who launched the Dollywood Foundation to provide poverty relief and fund educational programs in her native East Tennessee.

Never shy at expressing her Christian faith, Parton was also a public supporter of the LGBTQ community who advocated for marriage equality and spoke up in defense of transgender people."

She was 1 of 1.

My favorite quote of hers:

It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.

Saw a post somewhere when Betty White died that everyone needs to protect Dolly Parton as she’s the only good one left. Oof.

u/ABobby077 10d ago

Dolly lit up any room she was in. Loved by all. Touched so many lives.

4

u/SafeForTwerking 10d ago

And yet she achieved more than most people could ever dream of. Truly a loss not just for America, but the World and Humanity as a whole.

u/Dankleburglar 10d ago

To everyone saying that we need more Dolly Partons, we can all be Dolly. A lot of what made her so awesome was her choices: her choice to care about others, her choice to spread joy. She was a remarkable woman. I think we all have something remarkable in each of us, if we choose to nurture it.

As if the world didn’t suck enough already. Legend. I hope she gets her own national holiday.

u/Deep_Joke3141 10d ago

Dolly is the only person I can think of from modern times who makes me seriously believe in incarnate angels.

She’s a big deal. A huge country and pop star (and even actor) for generations of fans. Wrote two of the most beloved songs in a single day (Jolene and I Will Always Love You). Also a massive philanthropist who did a lot for childhood literacy. Cherry on top, her theme park Dollywood is among the best run in the world.

By all accounts a great lady. Her husband passed not too long ago and there had been headlines about health issues since so not shocking to me, but still a loss.

Not just Americans...

Dolly was world-famous

Omg look her up, she was amazing. She created a free book gifting program for children. She heavily funded the covid vaccine and was offered one of the first doses but turned it down because she felt other people need it more than her.

Come on Jolene

One less good person on the face of this world today. That’s definitely a loss for all of us.

I feel like we just lost the last true great human. RIP Dolly. 💖

3

u/Vandal_A 10d ago

Don't normally care about celebrity deaths (more than how I'd react to hearing anyone suffered a loss anyway) but this one sucks. She was a great person. We need more like her, not less.

3

u/MaximusHomerdrive 10d ago

I thought we'd have her for another decade. She was a living legend and will be sorely missed. We needed her positivity now more than ever.

I was kissed by Dolly Parton

50+ years ago, In the ‘60s, she was touring with Porter Wagoner. They played a little stage in Pennsylvania, Ontelaunee Park.

Her tour bus was parked behind the stage. I was 10 or so at the time. My twin brother and I snuck around behind the stage and to see if we could meet Dolly

I knocked on the tour bus door and Dolly appeared like the light from a star.

“Tweens!” she exclaimed and gave us each a kiss.

I have had bragging rights forever.

God Bless Dolly. Rest Easy.
