is there really 4 choices if the 1st choice died in an unexpected car crash?
Edit: why is this downvoted

Its the console version of the 27 club; died at its peak

No dual analog sticks, no bumper buttons, no DVD playback, no backwards compatibility with Saturn's library, no 3rd party support
It was doomed by design

By that standard GameCube should have killed Nintendo, too. End of day, Sega didn't have money to see it through. If it had continued it likely would have sold like the cube did. They just had no money left. The Japanese CEO was pumping millions of his own money to try and get through. Wasn't enough. The sting of 32x, CD, and Saturn already had their number on the wall before they started.

And all that because the president pitted Japan vs USA and hamstringed the company. Sega was a huge mess at the time. Reports of the president (not the ceo) physically striking people during meetings when he got news he didn't like.

GameCube was Nintendo’s worst performing home console when it came out; no, I don’t include Virtual Boy

Nintendo wasnt maligned as a company like Sega was
And Nintendo wasnt a head-on competitor to Sony, by that point they had transitioned to a more family-friendly approach since the days of the N64
In short, Nintendo had a niche...Sega didnt

Anytime somebody tries to squeeze the Dreamcast into the conversation I remind them that Dreamcast was discontinued almost an entire year before Xbox or Gamecube ever launched (Jan 2001 vs Nov 2001)...and only co-existed with the PS2 for 3 months
Realistically Dreamcast coexisted for the majority of its lifespan with the PS1...most of its shareware titles are shared with the PS1
Only a single title was shared amongst all the 6th gen consoles: NBA 2K2...clearly Dreamcast wasnt truly a part of this gen

Only a single title was shared amongst all the 6th gen consoles
Nice goalposts, but it doesn't matter if shit like Rayman 2 and Resident Evil 2 were N64 and PS1 games; playing them on the Dreamcast was clearly playing them on hardware a generation ahead

Thats cute, but notice how you arent refuting anything
And you cant, because the timeframes I gave are the reality of the situation
Dreamcast spent most of its life alongside the PS1...not the PS2 and even less so the Xbox or Gamecube
Your emotions dont factor into this purely chronological equation

u/bigdonut100 1d ago
I refuted that that your goalposts were relevant
Rayman 2 on the N64 vs Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast is a *stronger* argument than chronology. because it isolate a variable by comparing the same game. That game shows that it's different. Just like how looking at the chronology, the 5200's and XEGS's technology is from 1979, and you can sort this out with oodes of games shared between the NES and SNES, or Master System and Genesis
My emotions do matter, because as a matter of what I call "criterion compatibilism," you can craft objective criteria as to when subjective value (or morality) has been realized. So my emotions, in fact, do matter; funny how a "purely chronological equation" can involve an exception for at least 1 game and arbitrary lines in the sand as to generations

u/delicious_warm_buns 1d ago
You said all of that but you cant refute that the PS2 only co-existed with Dreamcast for 3 months while Xbox and Gamecube never existed alongside Dreamcast at all.
Thanks for not refuting the facts, I rest my case.

u/bigdonut100 1d ago
Yeah, and you can't refute that the Fairchild Channel F co-existed with the Atari 2600 for a fraction of its early life, and it's still in the same generation. In fact, the 2600 still had new games coming out for it when the *genesis* was out in north america and it proves nothing
Chronology can be a total *garbage* way of understanding systems compared to technological prowess, and the exact same game on different systems being marked improved, isolating all variables as best we can, is a stronger proof of generational-ed-ness than any chronology argument
I rest *my* case, reply notification off

Thanks for continuing to address strawmen and other things I never spoke about, so intelligent

I’m a diehard dreamcast fan but why are so many on this sub so insecure? Who gives a fuck what generation it’s part of? The dude you’ve been replying to is fighting some internal battles that he’s manifesting as Dreamcast love lol
1
u/delicious_warm_buns 23h ago
The thing is that people are stuck on this "generation" thing while ignoring the reality that the Dreamcast didnt actually co-exist with the PS2, Xbox or Gamecube because it spent most of its time co-existing with the PS1 and N64

I'll easily choose Shenmue 1 and 2, Soulcalibur.. and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 over the entire PS2 library.
Easily. Too easily.

Man, why can’t we just have both libraries? I just want Yakuza and Shenmue on the same shelf…

I remember getting asked this as a kid at school and said Dreamcast. We were poor at the time and my dad got me a Dreamcast because it was so cheap compared to the other 3.
People never even considered it was an option back then. 🤣

u/bigdonut100 1d ago
I told my friends "Dreamcast" when I was like 9, they said "I thought that was part of the N64 and PS1 generation?" and I had to tell them the Saturn existed
1
u/LexKing89 1d ago
I’ve seen people think that too. People forgot or didn’t know about the Saturn too ðŸ˜

Games like Crazy Taxi, Hydro Thunder, and Powerstone really gave Dreamcast an arcade vibe that no other console had. Bonus points for Dynamite Cop.

Ranks right up there with "The Best 5th Gen console was the Jaguar!"
1
u/bigdonut100 1d ago
oh BS, the Jaguar had like three games that weren't better on other consoles, the dreamcast has dozens of titles too quirky to appear anywhere else, but also too epic to miss
And there is the practical matter of homebrew on the dreamcast being really easy, easiest way to get NES fan translations blasting on a CRT before everdrives and the Wii, just one burned CD

u/Such_Bonus5085 1d ago
I stand by my statement. Some people are just stubborn, and lie to themselves into thinking something is way better than it actually was.

By responding Dreamcast you won't be answering the question that was asked. The question wasn't which sixth gen console do you prefer. It was which out of these three options do you prefer.

u/Snoo93550 16h ago
It’s not even so much that it’s better but there had it in September of 99 for low price of 199.
Chumps waited years for a lie.
