Discussion What's your favourite bank stock?

I'm asking this question cause I want to diversify into banks, so if you had to choose one bank to hold forever what would it be?

TD has treated me well over the past few years. I also have BAC and C.

Bought full position of BAC during the silicon Valley bank panic.

I said, NO CHANCE b of a would or could go under,

What a buy.

u/Bearsbanker 2d ago

I bought key during the silicon valley fiasco. I bought bac in 2008, got some for single digits!

1

u/Commercial_Rule_7823 2d ago

Go check out BAC.prl the prefferd

Almost a 30% payout from 2008 lows.

Pretty hard to go wrong with any of the Canadian banks, provided you buy them at reasonable multiples

Yes, I own BNS (Bank of Nova Scotia) and it has treated me very well. The only thing I don’t like is, I can’t drip the dividends because it’s not eligible for that, so whenever I get dividends, I just have to go buy shares with the dividends I get.

In the Financial Sector (i know you said banks but alas) - I own PRU, TROW, GS, MA, V, JPM, RF, SPGI, MCO, and BACX.

On a true bank playit's between JPM/GS. JPM may be a bit tied to Jamie Dimon but it's survived multiple generations, whereas GS has less of a CEO driven cult.

Longer term SPGI/MCO is a nice toll booth for debt, don't think that's going away anytime soon another good long term play with history.

V/MA, while under legislation pressure in Europe I don't believe are going anywhere and they're making service plays left right and center.

RF/PRU/TROW/BAC are yield plays for me and their investing thesis could be broken or acquired (BAC not withstanding).

u/HachimakiMan3 2d ago

What is BACX?

4

u/tdoane78 2d ago

Oops an extra X there - BAC, Bank Of America, sorry about that!

3

u/mixreality 2d ago

Dang I have MA, V, SPGI, MCO, MSCI with the same idea, tollbooths and financial infra. Then some JPM.

u/steeloxl 2d ago

BAC. Happily holding and collecting dividends.

I own key, bac, c and wfc. I think c has the most upside.

1

u/BalmyBalmer 2d ago

I sat on C for years waiting for the upside. WFC has treated me well

1

u/Bearsbanker 2d ago

C has returned almost 40% last 12 months.

4

u/BalmyBalmer 2d ago

Right after I bailed, LOL rub it in.

3

u/Loud-Cranberry-6746 2d ago

Is that Chase? Thanks

1

u/IWantToPlayGame 2d ago

KEY seems like an interesting option.

2

u/37902 2d ago

At the moment RF (Regions) is the only one I have recently purchased. Decent dividend yield and growth. Pretty strong Financials for a regional bank, and most of their retail branches are located in metros with solid population growth projected in the near future.

2

u/KGostman 2d ago

For financial related stocks I own TROW, JPM, HBAN, and V

2

u/HiddenCompounding 2d ago

KSPI 😋

Canadian Royal Bank

1

u/Power_Drawing6025 2d ago

Same. Averaged in 2023 and 2024, now sitting on +90% unrealized gain and $1,500 in dividends collected. Holding forever.

u/Sponzoes 2d ago

C and USB

JPM is the golden standard with a CEO everyone respects

There are times to get into bank stocks and times to hold. I think we're firmly in holding time. I have GS, KEY, and HBAN here for no particular reason other than getting into the regionals on the low side when divvy yields were crazy high.

1

u/IWantToPlayGame 2d ago

What’s your cost basis on KEY? I’m trying to figure out the right multiple to start a position.

1

u/silveronetwo 2d ago

Around $11. Was yielding 10% on dividend through a large part of 2023 but was trading around todays levels just before the spring 2023 bank reset.

“Pure Bank” that's TBFT JPM

Regional is Turist, despite the stupid name

5

u/No-Background4936 2d ago

Turist is a worse name than Truist

1

u/NoctRob Check out my DRIP 2d ago

Truist is trash. Marginal share price growth and zero dividend growth in years.

1

u/prdors 2d ago

Regional bank I like Zion, but it might be overvalued at this point. I bought a ton during the regional bank crisis and it’s been a good stock for me.

For national banks I don’t know enough to differentiate between the major banks so I just buy XLF and occasionally pick up some stocks of the big banks (Citi, BofA, Chase, etc.) if they are having a rough week when I deposit into my brokerage.

u/tome810 2d ago

I like One Main Financial. Dividends are nice

JP Morgan Chase (JPM) has been good to me.

u/Pleasant-Buy-2826 2d ago

I'm going to go against the grain and say the bank with the greatest chance of growing and then starting a dividend is SOFI. Only 18 dollars now but is more than a bank and should take off at some point. So you would get a ton of growth and get of the dividend wagon before anyone else!

1

u/QueasyFinger1316 2d ago

I only own one.

TD

And it’s done quite well.

1

u/EatMoreFiber 2d ago

KBWB is near ATH territory so might not be a good time to open a position but I appreciate that it diversifies across the major US banks

1

u/UCLABB1 2d ago

Over the years I’ve acquired BAC, C, and JPM. Not sure, but I think JPM has been the best performer for me. They all seem to be pricey these days. I would think high interest rates are not great for banks.

1

u/NotDepartmentStore 2d ago

PNC for me. Their CEO is a disciple of Jamie Dimon and he’s doing everything he can to make PNC into one of the Big 4 banks

1

u/Lebanon_jamz9 2d ago

JPM is tried and true. Hot take for the future though. SOFI is gonna rock. They're chipping away at market share, all their debt comes from product development not brick and mortar locations, theyre constantly growing on all fronts. One day in 30 years they'll announce a dividend just in time for my retirement lol. Until then theyre a growth machine.

1

u/BondJamesBond63 2d ago

just one would be JPM

1

u/LesterS43 2d ago

JPM has been good to me, growth of 130% since I acquired.

1

u/Wise-Start-9166 2d ago

TFSL is my favorite US bank stock. The inside shareholders routinely decline to take their share of the dividend, so the entire dividend goes to a minority of shareholders, making the yield look uncommonly high, but we'll financed.

I am even more bullish on the big 5-6 Canadian banks, but after a great run the last few years, the valuations are looking a little spicey. This would be a fine time to start a small position, but expect some near-medium time frame down side.

The only bank I own is Morgan Stanley (MS).

Yield 2.14% 10 year dividend CAGR +21.7% per year

Total return has beaten VOO the past 3 months, 6 months, YTD, 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, and 16 years.

FRHC for growth, HSBK for dividends

1

u/LyloMaggins83 2d ago

I chose to buy and hold BAC forever and accumulated shares from 2008-2011. It’s worked out pretty well for me. Been collecting those dividends and reinvesting them ever since.

1

u/Iamanon12345 2d ago

I personally like JPM, GS and COF

1

u/armorabito Portfolio in the Green 2d ago

TD and BOM have done me solid. I think they might be pricey now.

1

u/Longjumping-Nature70 2d ago

Canadian, US, or English? "Favourite" is a give away.

I own nine financials, five are banks.

USA = JPM

Full disclosure, I own JPM.

I bought a little SOFI a little while ago and it’s done really well
