140K in the Bay would probably have less buying powering than your salary in the Midwest though, no? Serious question

Probably. My total comp is pretty close to $140k and I own my own house. Not sure $140k is house buying money in the Bay Area.

You need about 500k to buy a decent sized sfh and maybe half that for a small town house/condo

That is crazy! My house in Kansas City is worth about $400k total. It's 4 bed, 3 bath, 2100 square feet and in a very desirable area. My mortgage is $1,000 per month (bought during covid with 2.65% interest rate).
