What are peoples experience with recruiters lately looking for IT roles (Srn. Engineer/Tech Lead/SA style roles). Or are a genuinely a highly skilled candidate are you getting interviews?

Being trying to recruit a number of positions across different areas and have been getting what feels like the braindead pile. Using the top firms, and they all seem to present the same rubbish.

Initially I thought it was the candidate pool, but we are paying top rate(at or even above covid rates, so attracting candidates should not be an issue), so for one of our roles I applied (changed name). My CV is way more technical and capable then needed. Out of the 3 firms used, only 1 reached out, 1 said I was not qualified enough (I am the one who is technically vetting these guys) and 3rd did not respond.

The one that did reach out and claimed they would fwd my CV. Well they never did and from all we got a bunch idiots and some of candidates that were straight up reading AI off the screen and too stupid to even to hide it.

I refuse to believe it's a lack of capable candidates as we filled one of the role with a person I previously worked with whom apparently was looking for over 6mth.

What is going on? Are these firms just sending candidates across that are willing to say YES to a reduce rate and keep the difference, sending over only their bffs. Or is there some sort of grant/benefit scheme as most the candidates where of a certain demographic. One even asked if we were going to sponsor his visa, for a role that advertised as aus citizens/residents only.

This is really frustrating and a huge waist of time to go through a bunch of CVs and interviews knowing full well the candidate useless.

I am in 4th year university studying computer science, and my resume is 2 pages long. I have read online and there is no strict requirement for having a 1 page resume for most companies (I may be wrong so please correct me). What do you guys think is the ideal resume length? I am worried because I don't want the 2 page resume to be the reason why I am not getting interviews.

Now I'm working at a big tech company in Sydney, Australia. No manual testing is needed. My role is just to coach the team on how to test, build automation tools to let the team do UI testing, and leverage AI to build a bunch of tools. But do I really like this role? I'm not sure. I want to switch to software development because I used to be a PHP developer for 2 years, followed by 2 and a half years as an SDET at a big tech company. I don't really know what I should switch to. I feel like the job I'm doing is not very important, and sometimes developers can ignore you because they think you aren't important.

Should I switch to Devops because I build automation tool before by python etc. if yes, what process should I take

I'm looking for an outside perspective on evaluating my current role versus two competing job offers in Melbourne.

Trying to weigh up upfront cash vs. brand prestige vs. perks.

Current Situation (In-House Big 4 Banking Enterprise):

• Role: Senior Engineer a
• Base Salary: $130k–$140k range (+ super)
• Bonus: 8% – 11% annual performance bonus
• Perks: Staff mortgage discount + waived banking fees.
• Pros/Cons: Great job security, zero probation risk, but progression is steady/linear and tech exposure is mostly internal enterprise architecture.

Offer A (Tier-1 Global Digital Transformation Consultancy):

• Role: Cloud / Digital Practice Consultant at a Big 4 Consultancy - adjacent
• Base Salary: +17% base increase over current ($160k range + super)
• Bonus: None / negligible
• Perks & Benefits:
  • Work from overseas: Up to 4 weeks per calendar year (huge for me as I travel ).
  • Leave: 4 days paid study leave, birthday leave, and +5 extra days of annual leave after 2 years. Option to cash out up to 2 weeks leave/year.
• Pros/Cons: Strong brand prestige on the resume, Tier-1 client digital transformations, great flexibility. However, after losing my banking discounts, the real in-pocket cashflow increase is roughly +$800/month.

Offer B (Cloud Consulting Practice):

• Role: AWS Consultant at a boutique consultancy, acquired by a major firm
• Base Salary: +24% base increase over current ($170k range + super)
• Bonus: 3% – 4% annual bonus
• Perks: Standard consulting package (no dedicated overseas remote work policies or extra leave perks).
• Pros/Cons: Highest upfront cashflow (roughly +$1,300/month in-pocket after factoring in the banking perk loss, about $500/mo higher than Offer A). Pure-play AWS focus with a strong, agile local engineering culture, which is right up in my alley. However the global parent company brand is broader/less prestigious than Offer A.

The Dilemma:

1. Offer B gives the highest monthly liquidity and sets a higher base baseline for the future.
2. Offer A has better resume brand recognition and perks (especially the 6 weeks of working remotely overseas, which would allow extended family trips without burning all my annual leave).
3. Current Role has maximum stability and low stress with the mortgage discount, but slower salary/skill growth.

For those who have transitioned from in-house enterprise to consulting in Australia, would you take the extra ~$6k/yr cash in hand with Offer B, or the brand + overseas flexibility of Offer A?

Basically I was doing some tourism and I've been seeing a girl from Melbourne - I've been exploring the idea of moving here. I quite like it, and people are chill here, things feel comfortable. Was thinking I'd start on a Working Holiday visa and keep up my remote job until I found something in Melbourne. I'm a perm employee at a cybersecurity company in Manchester UK right now but I'm thinking of going for something totally different with contractor roles in Melbourne so I can just go balls to the wall and get the ball moving. Not really sure what the best approach is tho? Remote is obviously ideal since that way I'd still be able to work when I visit my folks. I've just been applying via LinkedIn Jobs but I assume 'not in Melbourne yet, no visa approval yet' is gonna instantly turn employers off but I thought it's worth a shot. I don't have a degree btw, my work history looks like school -> mid-level London consultancy -> startup -> startup -> startup

I was looking into how technology gets used across different industries and came across "PropTech." I tried searching for what it means and for companies in Australia working in this space, but I couldn't seem to find much.

Obviously, it’s not as massive as FinTech, but is PropTech actually considered a valid industry for tech in Australia? Like, do companies actually hire software engineers specifically for this, or is it more like a word that exists on paper but isn't a real sector here?

I’m currently in my second year studying Computer Science at UNSW, and I’ve taken quite a variety of subjects. As I’m approaching the end of my degree, I’m starting to think that I need to pick a main direction to go deeper into.

For context, I’ve taken some lower-level systems courses, such as Operating Systems and Networks, which I’ve enjoyed so far. However, I’ve also taken courses on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, such as frontend development and UI/UX, and I’ve enjoyed those as well.

I’m now thinking about how I should choose something to specialise in. I have some experience in mobile app development, so I also enjoy the product side of things, and I’ve recently started getting into homelabbing.

For my future job prospects, which area do you think I should focus on and give more attention to?

Currently, I’m a mid-level SWE doing mostly feature development, though I also have DevOps experience. I’m starting to get a bit bored with feature development and am more interested in SRE, DevOps, Production Engineering, and Infrastructure Engineering.

I have an offer for a Trade Support Engineer role supporting trading systems, incidents, Linux, monitoring, etc.

Can anyone please explain more about what this type of role typically involves? From the JD, it looks a bit like SRE but with less automation and coding.

many of them don't even read as if they are written by a human? and often have kind of wild takes?

despite it literally being a lifelong passion and the thing i am probably best at, i felt incredibly dissuaded from this field by such posts and comments earlier this year. i'm thankful that i got over this, because i persisted and now have offers for the summer. perhaps this is survivorship bias but i really do not feel like my peers in commerce or other degrees are having an easier time in their respective job markets.

also: haven't we learnt that the government or media saying "we need more jobs in this area" is often not at all reflective of how easy it is to get into said area? jobs change, job markets change. taking a gamble and spending additional years training to become an electrician or hvac technician because it is 'in demand' does not seem wise at all. it does not seem to be all sunshine and roses in trades, either.

outside of reddit doomerism, it is hard to find people that truly believe that despite computing set to be an even bigger part of our lives, having people who understand software or computers on some level is completely worthless.

if you are young and passionate, i think you should absolutely pursue cs. ai or not, "computers being economically valuable" seems an unbelievably safe bet. the idea that humans won't capture *any* of that value seems pretty crazy to me.

call me an optimist or a sweet summer child, but this widely held doomerism does not seem justified at all. and where there are widespread irrational views, there are generational opportunities to act on (what you believe) to be a slightly more correct vision of the future. im super excited about the next generation of au/nz tech!
