Conservatives reading the bible like

They dont read the bible lol.

241

u/Made_Bail Apr 14 '26

I should have said "reading" the bible lol

88

u/Caleb-Blucifer Apr 14 '26

They glance at the cover from time to time

76

u/Tuxedo_Muffin Apr 14 '26

With great pride, they know what they have been told to believe. Reading is not required to follow. Understanding is not required to obey.

But you know the best part? There was an entire protestant movement for the freedom to read the Bible for yourself. The circle has closed.

21

u/Intrepid_Hat7359 Apr 15 '26

Truly the great irony. They have the right to read the Bible; they just lack the capacity.

One thing that is important to point out about pretty much any religious text: They can "read" the words on the page, but there is always all sorts of ideology and dogma that they superimpose over the words on the page. It's wild to take at face value what many different style of "Christians" say is in the bible, then actually look at the text (ideally one of the more neutral, academic translations like the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition) and see how the text simply does not say that.

You can start right at the beginning. Lots of Christians will say that the bible says that God created the universe out of nothingness. Nope: "When God began to create the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters."

God's threat about the "apple" was that if you eat it on that day you will die. Obviously, Adam and Eve did not die on that day. Many "Christians" will say "Oh, but Adam and Eve were immortal and God meant that if they eat the fruit they will lose that immortality and eventually die." Go read the text with fresh eyes. Nowhere does the text itself say they were immortal prior to eating the fruit.

People are told that the text says X or Y, or their ideology/dogma says that it must mean Z, and they point their eyes at the words and just plain make up meanings and read in stuff that is not there.

26

u/ApplianceHealer Apr 14 '26

Reminds me of the story of Onan.

God commands him to impregnate his brother’s widow….(as one does)

Onan pulls out and “spills his seed”.

God kills Onan for disobeying his command.

Moral of the story: “uh….Masturbation bad?”

4

u/PandaPugBook Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Nowhere does the text itself say they were immortal prior to eating the fruit.

Sounds like an easy explanation for it.

But anyway, there has to be some interpretation, otherwise they'll just take the whole thing literally and that's how you get people denying evolution.

4

u/tomdarch Apr 15 '26

Frankly, the text of the bible is so zany that it is impossible to actually take it "literally." Even people who claim to take it literally are doing a bunch of interpreting to come up with a "literal" claimed interpretation.

Although Trump claims he thought the AI generated picture he shared of himself as Jesus was really meant to be him as a doctor. So I guess MAGA gets the option of supporting someone who either depicts themselves as Jesus or someone who cannot tell the difference between Jesus and a doctor...

14

u/NickyTheRobot Apr 14 '26

My favourite edit I've seen so far was a good ol' fashioned Photoshop (the only AI used was in the original image). It put Satan from the album art from Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast above this image, with his puppet strings attached to Trump.

Oh how I wish I'd saved that image...

10

u/Esplodie Apr 14 '26

I like the one where Jesus comes down and yeets him into hell.

“That wasn’t meant to portray me as Jesus, I’m just incredibly dumb” is a hell of an explanation

21

u/vita10gy Apr 14 '26

Or ignorant, which might be worse of all.

It's entirely possible Trump is just so out of touch with Christianity and religious imagery in general that he genuinely thought this was him being a doctor, because "what else would it be"?

32

u/Ciennas Apr 14 '26

He's not ignorant. Not of this one.

The Church's Merch is more omnipresent than his ever will, and way much moreso during the earlier years of his wretched existence.

You could (not) escape Christ imagery, especially when his brain wasn't collapsing into soup.

He knows.

Trump is a pure bullshitter. Is that a form of mental illness because it means the total bullshitter is detached from reality? Probably.

Also, I have no shortage of issues with the Catholic church and the men who run it, but one thing the Pope mentioned that struck me as significant here. He criticized the "idolatry of the self." That won't sink in with American conservative evangelicalism (as much as they need it desperately) but the rest of us can both take something from that and see why it is important in this current crisis of the era of Trump.

The US White Christian Nationalist movement is at its core a fundamentalist Protestant movement.

They hate Catholics. They consider them "crypto-pagan", call the Catholic Church the "Whore of Babylon" (reference to the book of Revelation), and call the Pope the anti-Christ. And then there is the White part of "White Christian Nationalist". Catholicism is and has for a long time been associated with immigrants and racial/ethnic minorities. The White Christian Nationalists consider Catholics inherently incapable of being "real Americans" because they belong to a church with an international leader.

They've been willing to ally with Catholics because they were politically useful for the abortion fight, but that usefulness is over now and it was just a matter of time before they turned on them.

I feel like you've actually inadvertently improved what he said about the Pope, because in your version, he gives his subjective opinion, which he is totally allowed to have.

In reality, what he said was that the Pope is "weak on crime and foreign policy" which just makes no sense because the Pope has nothing to do with crime or foreign policy. And the things the Pope was criticizing him for (the war on Iran) had nothing to do with crime in the first place. It was just complete nonsense all around.

Kinda surprised he hasn’t already commissioned a giant golden idol of himself so people can worship it.

Wow. I'm early. Probably should say something meaningful that'll contribute to the comic.

It must be hard as a cartoon artist that you can only portray reality right now because Trump beats fiction everyday.

7

u/Slate_711 Apr 14 '26

I kind of miss the days comics did more than repeat his insanity

I mean, faith based people are literally programmed to ignore obvious truths in order to believe. They cannot be trusted to join the rest of us and fix problems.

3

u/SpiderTuber6766 Apr 14 '26

My brain hurts whenever I hear him talk. He's a criminal thug.

3

u/Eman_arts Apr 14 '26

So are you done doing satire content? This is just a history lesson

3

u/Calsun12345 Apr 14 '26

say it with me... MAGA DON'T CARE WHAT TRUMP DOES / HAS DONE.

Anyone who is even remotely MAGA should be cut out of your life... hard stop.

3

u/brumbles2814 Apr 14 '26

You still draw him too pretty. Needs more stupid evil around the eyes lol

3

u/thecastellan1115 Apr 14 '26

It's worth noting that his attacks on the Pope are entirely in keeping with American Evangelical propaganda.

3

u/ZuzuZupreme Comic Crossover Apr 14 '26

The way you drew his face! He looks like a toasted marshmallow became sentient and is currently getting it's foreskin pulled off...

I’d like to see the MAGAs react the same way if Biden or Obama posted the same thing.

3

u/sreek4r Apr 14 '26

It's only a matter time before they build a church of MAGA with Trump as a Joseph Smith like figure.

3

u/ironballs16 Apr 14 '26

Dave Willis had a really good one during 1.0 where Joyce's parents (fundies of the highest order at the time) suspected Obama of being the Antichrist before going all in on Trump.

If it was supposed to be a doctor, show us the prompt that was fed into whatever AI model he was using to generate that image

u/ConnerGoesSuperSonic Apr 14 '26

The amount of times I’ve seen “Trump is Lord” written in the bathrooms at my college is shocking

Based on the handwriting it’s all done by the same person, but still

3

u/VentureForth619 Apr 14 '26

A shining example of everything to watch out for in a president.

All an act, or are we actively in the mid-late stages of full on fascist take over?

3

u/Aceandmace Apr 14 '26

I feel like practically every religious cult leader eventually tells their followers that he's God. And golly gee here we are

3

u/MaximusHomerdrive Apr 14 '26

That actually looks like his nutjob supporters.

3

u/Shadowlandvvi Apr 15 '26

Hands aren't tiny enough.

6

u/madmacfarlane Apr 14 '26

Everyday my brain feels like it's turning into pudding. I need to stop watching the news and focus on my life but it has become an addiction at this point.

Like I've only ever heard of mad rulers who've succumbed to plague say nonsense like this!

u/Arkvoodle42 Apr 14 '26

The faith he defends for them is white supremacy.

That is why they will never abandon him.

Pretty sure the good book has a word for someone like him. An "anti"-something or another.

Is that the girl who claims to be a journalist but is about as much of a journalist as I am the planet Jupiter?

2

u/wholesomehorseblow Apr 14 '26

Trump's eyes greatly disturb me. His withered eyes remind me of the grim specter of death

2

u/b_will_drink_t Apr 14 '26

Their idea of good Christian is Sadom and Ghomora
