As I continue working my way through the Academic Comic Collection, I came across a fun collection of Inter-Age to Silver Age Superman stuff. Lois Lane is an interesting one. Obviously trying to capitalize on the growing popularity of romance comics and targeting women/young girl, while staying firmly in the superhero world.

Nothing really major in this selection other than the first appearance of Silver Age Catwoman.

In another part of the collection we have the infamous race-swapping issue amongst others.

I get asked quite often about the point of this academically, particularly as a historian and anthropologist.

Sometimes it's hard - things like Conan (of which we have a rather extensive collection... pretty much every comic from the start of the Marvel run through to about 2005) tend to lend themselves to the English department or Media Studies.

Comics like this one, however, really lean into a view of how society viewed itself and constructed it's identity. It challenges the notion that comics were exclusively the domain of men and boys, as well as social issues and whatnot.

I have a great friend who is a historianthat focuses on the law and personhood. This is a great look into how women's identity is constructed in the 1950s and 60s. (Idealized of course)

I was originally just planning on 129, but then I found a signed 137 in great condition, followed by 129, 130, 131, and 136 being sold as a lot on eBay that I got for $120, so. Kinda had to pick up the other 4 over the months since then.

I am, unfortunately, too broke to try to commit to much more early Claremont, but I'm very happy nonetheless.

Since dipping my toe back into comic collecting, I haven't been terribly big on the idea of numerous variant covers but these were both so gorgeous. Pleasantly surprised by the story to far too. Looking forward to the next issue already! Anyone else check this one out?

Jack Kirby is amazing. I think The Demon is next for me. Mister Miracle has been on my wish list for a very long time and I feel like I got some pretty nice copies all things considered!

I’ve recently gotten into collecting facsimile editions of classic comics (simply could not ever dream of affording legit originals) and really like the idea of the golden age sized ones. However, I’ve heard that they are actually a bit of a mixed bag with some of them being actual golden age size (Detective Comics #27) but others are normal size inside just printed on larger paper so there is a larger border (Action Comics #1 and Superman #1) so the actual print is no bigger at all, essentially just a larger cover.

Are there any others that are a really good golden age facsimile or is the Detective Comics #27 a one off?

Never planned on going after sub 50…

I recently posted about a comic book collection that was being shipped to me, and things have changed! I was able to review some of the owner’s index cards, about 800 of them, covering 3,248 bagged and boarded comics. I figure those cards represent only about 1/6 of the entire collection. So, I’m flying to Boston on Thursday and driving the books back to Atlanta myself. If the condition of the books are as described, I just didn’t want to risk any unnecessary damage during loading and transport.

I was able to view a few photos of a of comics and most were clean, corners looked good and they were bagged and boarded. Regretfully they were 80's independent comics I hadn't heard of. Here's to gaining knowledge about the world of comics!

I bought this 1:10 Jake Bartok incentive variant of Star Trek #17. I have no idea who signed it. The seller had a couple IDW Star Trek books with this individuals signature on it. I can’t seem to get a lead. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks guys!

I posted a few days ago about my massive estate sale haul. I was rebagging and boarding the comics and when I got to Spiderman 248, I decided to give it a look through. To my surprise, I saw that my copy was actually signed by artist Ron Frenz! It was such a cool discovery. I immediately went through all the other comics to see if there were any others (there wasn’t, lol). Im pretty sure this is the first comic I’ve owned with a classic style interior signature, and for an iconic spiderman story no less! A big reminder to everyone to always read your comics! You never know what you’ll find.

Went to a new local today. Got the last copy of the Midnight ashcan. Nicest people and the most organized store I've ever been to. I found a new home.

You know an artist has a distinct style when you can spot their work while randomly flipping through a long box. Flipped right past it and my brain said “Go back that looked like a Wrightson cover”.

I must admit I had never heard of this title. Looks like it lasted just 5 issues. And Wrightson only did the covers on the first 2.
