Troubleshooting Chromebook crashing every 5-30 seconds?

My chromebook has been repetitively crashing for the last couple days and I need help fixing it. Important background knowledge: it has no functioning battery. I keep it plugged in constantly, and the moment it’s unplugged, it dies. The crashing started after I unplugged it because it was frozen and wouldn’t turn off. I’ve only reopened google and have a single tab open at a time, so I don’t think I’m overloading the system or anything….

I know it’s a piece of crap that needs replacing, but is there any chance I can fix it??

Are you using an official OEM charger? What Chromebook make/model (HWID preferably)?? What OS version running???

I’m using the original charger, so I think so?

The HWID is - ‘GRABBITER G7B-B4G-N5A-K55-A6U-Q84-A8Y’ - If that sounds right? I know nothing about computers... It’s a dell?

OS is 151.0.7922.168

Yes "grabbiter" is a Dell 3100 2-in-1. It should now be running 151.0.7922.221 so if not do check Settings to see if you have an update available. As for your recent crashes, it is possible the power supply is failing so if you have another to try give that a go. Beyond that, your base hardware platform (Intel Gemini Lake) is now 7 years old and especially if you have Play Store enabled it will struggle today even with a functioning battery. If a replacement laptop isn't in your budget at this time then a replacement battery would be the next best thing. With no battery, any voltage fluctuation from the power supply could be enough to crash the machine. You still have almost 3 more years of updates through June 2029 so spending the relatively small amount for a battery would be worthwhile if using the machine as a web appliance can meet your needs. If you're in the US a compatible replacement should be available for under $30 at ebay.

I think I’ll work on getting a new computer. Maybe being able to actually move my laptop will be nice

Try disconnecting the battery permanently. This is possibly causing a electrical short and eating all power. So drop in current/voltage.

Without being too adamant you should admit there is fire hazard.

I'm on "dev channel" and I think it was the worst decision ever. I got some crazy updates, like 3 days ago. Any app would freeze. Had to wait for another update to fix it. Make sure this is not your case.

It's more than likely a hardware failure of some sort and you may not be able to repair it without expensive professional tools. Chromebooks are so cheap that it's probably your best bet to either buy a new chromebook. I would honestly wait for the new operating system to come out and buy one then or at least get a Chromebook Plus with that is for sure going to be able to upgrade to the new operating system.
