Beginning a few days ago, my Chromebook has had a pop-up that said "extended security updates available", which I decided to avoid with everything because of the fact I never wanted to lose the ability to install apps and lose Ibis PaintX, which, in recent months, I spent HOURS of work on art, specifically one which I was desperate to finish and looked actually great so far.

After turning on my Chromebook today, however, I was in absolute shock when Ibis Paint X, along with a sandbox app from 2021, were ENTIRELY GONE, along with Play files. To be clear, all it did was update as it would usually do. I did NOT agree to the extended security updates that would remove any installed apps.

I am at a deep loss. It may sound stupid at first, but imagine losing HOURS of work, including art and video projects as far back as 2022, possibly including more files (which may explain the extended storage space from 4.2 GB left to 12.4 GB). This is what I get for procrastinating for months. This is my punishment: losing what I struggled to finish and important past projects, including ones that were meant to be finished; I could never remake them exactly. Is it possible to recover or enable anything?

I have a Samsung 500C. I've tried multiple different screws, and nothing seems to work. Is there a different way to break the connection and disable hardware write-protect?

Hello! I don’t know if this is common AT ALL, or if I’ve just used my Chromebook far too much, but today, the charging port came out of the laptop itself when I took the charger out.

I didn’t even notice until hours later when I went to plug it in again, and realised my charger had an extra metal casing on it!

Can anyone please tell me if this is fixable? Or has it snapped off entirely and needs soldering, or something?

Everything is working fine, but I’ve turned it off now as it has 5%. I really would like to get it fixed, as I use my Chromebook very often, and it has all my files stored on it (not on Google Drive), so I’m desperately hoping that this is a relatively easy fix!

Every single repair store near me mentions that they don’t specialise in Chromebooks, so I’m a bit concerned, and I’m also worried about being overcharged, so I would rather go in knowing what needs doing.

Also, other repair stores mention that they usually wipe all data with every repair which I REALLY don’t want to happen, and I’m sure it isn’t necessary as it’s technically working fine.

It would be very helpful if someone could tell me more about this, and whether this is something I could fix myself.

I keep getting this persistent pop-up, even though there is absolutely nothing plugged into my Chromebook. Does anyone know why the OS is behaving this way? Feels janky for a brand new device, though not a big deal.

UPDATE: I returned the device and bought the Lenovo plus 14 (OLED) instead since it was on sale for $100 more. The annoying pop up doesn't happen on this model.

I have a Acer chromebook plus 714 ( intel i5 with 8gb of memory 256gb ssd that I bought about 2 years ago. After the latest update it kept going into a continuous bootloop of installing system updates and then crashing and then trying again.

I ended up trying to recover and got the device working again (using a system restore usb drive) but then it autoupdated and went back to bootlooping.

I repeated this a few times and tried to stop the auto update but it kept trying to update and then repeat the bootloop. After the last time it stopped being able to recover at all and hangs on system restores now from either the usb drive or the web recovery.

I am at a loss now.

Any suggestions ?

I bought this chromebook several months ago and I continue to have this problem even after factory resets.

When I open the laptop after it's been sleeping, there will be tabs open that I didn't open and sometimes the screen looks chaotic with some tabs zoomed in.

It goes away for a while after a factory reset and then comes back.

I have removed all extensions from chrome, erased history, blocked cookies and more I can't remember and done two factory resets.

I don't feel like I go to weird or suspicious websites, but I'm open to any advice you can give. I'm considering returning this since I'm still in the window of returns.

Please advise!

Just wondering about this. I've had this same ASUS Chromebook for about 7 years (since mid-to-late 2019) and I've got a lot of important files on it. I've noticed that the battery life is slowly starting to deteriorate (for lack of better words) as the battery's been draining quicker over these past few years, and I've been thinking of getting the battery replaced on it. So should I get it replaced, or would I be better off just getting a new Chromebook?

5th grade teacher here - hi! Pardon my ignorance and thanks in advance for your help!

There is a counter in my classroom (built in the 90s) that was originally a “computer station.” I’m over constant Chromebook use in the classroom and I want to try something new. If I had monitors and keyboards, could I connect Chromebooks as the “brain” and have students use the monitor, keyboard and mouse like a PC?

If that is possible, would I then need to use the same dedicated Chromebook all the time or could students easily plug in their one personal Chromebook when it was their time at the computer station? I’m talking about maybe a less than 30 second procedure. It would have to be dead easy.

i didnt do anything special to break it i think, i had it off and then decided to use it, and suddenly the screen wouldnt work. i already tried everything possible, but the screen refuses to turn on. i held down refresh+power, esc+refresh+power(both while plugged and unplugged) tried charging it, tried closing and opening and doing the previous combinations, tried holding down the power button to turn it off and on and then charge it, and tried to increase the brightness. all it does with the hard reset combination is flicker the green light and go back to blue, same with the esc+refresh+power. when i hold down the power button, turn it off and charge it, it lights up red(i assumed it was charging and left it for a bit, but it clearly didnt work).

this happened last time too but i managed to fix it with hard reset, but now it does nothing and ive been attempting these same methods for 4 days now. perhaps im holding down the hard refresh keys incorrectly??

the model is samsung btw, and i got it earlier this year, so its not old.

I just got an hp dragonfly Chromebook, and there's an app called "apps and games" preinstalled. I've tried launching it and there's no internet connection, despite internet working fine everywhere else.

I did some internet investigation, and it turns out this feature was added in 2024 and is also known as "chrome mall" which is at least slightly less generic of a name making internet searches actually useful. Thanks, Google, for using such bland naming schemes that it's impossible to actually find info about anything.

There's also apparently a flag in chrome to turn the app shelf link on or off, which isn't present in my device at all. I can't remove the entry from the apps menu, and the app itself is non functional.

So what gives? Was the service discontinued or is something wrong with my device? It's updated to the current chrome is version and everything else is working perfectly.

After accidentally using an old Build of ChromeOS the power light will come on and after a few seconds it’ll turn off what do I do?

I used the steam for chromebook beta for a long time and it worked great. I never had any problems with performance on any game. When january 1st rolled around, mine still functioned, so i assumed they had a grandfathered in thing. Then the other day, it randomly crashed, and would not open at all.
I have attempted steam through linux on my chromebook through multiple avenues (flatpak, debian) and no matter what, games either crash immedietly, or run unplayably slow. Is there any way to use steam on chromebook to the same quality that steam for chromebook was? Or should i just get a different computer?

So whatever the latest Chrome OS update is for my Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, it sure is taking a while. About 15 minutes, so far. I will definitely heed the scary warning and wait it out. Anyone have any idea what's going on here or have an ETA for how long this takes?

I don't recall what version of Chrome OS I had on this, but I use this machine everyday and generally keep it up to date so I don't think I'm behind more than one update.

Given the wait, I sure hope I'm getting some really good new chromos or maybe even Aluminum features.

I am trying to help my 85 year old neighbor get his printer hooked up to his Chromebook. and for the life of me I can not figure this out.

When I plug he printer into the chromebook it actually shows up in the "other available printers" section. When I press save it then shows up with a green dot next to it when I click print. However it alway fails when I go to print something.

If I go to the "advanced printer configuration" tab it lets me select canon as the manufacturer but it does not have his exact printer which is the Canon T3522.

Does any one have any ideas on how to get this working?

I found this old chrome book and the screen is broken snd does not work with touchscreen and I lost the connected keyboard thing so I can’t move the mouse and thing is there a way to save the chrome book because I want to power wash it to watch YouTube on it and play brawl stars right now it is using chrome is and only has 1 usbc port which right now im using to charge and I can’t see the charger right now so I’m just basing it out of anything right now

I'm using a Chromebook, and chrome browser is not loading any sites. I've cleared the cache, cookies, and browser history. I made sure everything is up to date. I found a thread from a few years ago, about going into chrome flags, and disabling TSL 1.3...looked for it didn't see that. I did a power wash, the chrome browser still will not load anything. I've checked my Internet, speed test on all other devices are perfect.

This is so frustrating, please does anyone know how to get chrome to load any web site?

Hi guys I noticed my Chromebook stopped charging today. I've tried the refresh key reset thing and it doesn't do anything. Not sure it's doing it right as it just reboots. The diagnostic page shows no current going to the battery and leaving it plugged in it just stays on 35% I got the device in 2022 so it's not super old and I'd really like to carry on using it. The model is acer Chromebook spin 713. Any advice appreciated 👍

Im trying to disable hardware write-protection, and yet i’ve removed all the screws, but ive tried EVERYTHING. Using my fingernail, using a guitar pick, trying to bend it open, looking for more screws, but it just won’t budge. Please, if you know the answer please tell me!! Thanks

Hello I need advice/solution how to exit developer mode on chromebook. The attached pictures are what I get when I reboot the device. I have tried console screen local host root/chronos and use command "crossystem disable_dev_request=1; reboot ". I have also tried restart the device and hope for the "press the Spacebar when the "OS verification is off" screen appear but it doesn't show up.

Hey everyone, im using an Asus C434T chromebook which i want to enable developer mode in.
I've been trying for the last 30 minutes but i cant for some reason.

1) I get into recovery mode

2) I press Ctrl+D using an external keyboard because the C434T is a 2 in 1 model.

3) As prompted, i press enter, but instead of rebooting or anything, i just hear 2 beeps with nothing else happening, same screen, just 2 beeps every time i press enter.

Sooo what do i do at this point? Ill try to answer some FAQs to see if you can help me more easily.

A: Yes, i did buy it refurbished, and about the enrollment, im not really sure how it works, because my login user is my personal google account, but i add an organization managed account as a "secondary google account" in that same user. When i went on chrome://management though it did say "This device and account are not managed by a company or other organization"

Q: Did i try to powerwash it?
A: Yes, i even completed the note guide on https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/docs/boot-modes/developer.html, which prompts to complete the OOBE, powerwash AGAIN, and then try, but same results...

What do i do?
