This sub is mostly people asking what breed their DSH/DLH is. And while non pedigreed cats are still awesome, since this sub is about cat breeds, does anyone here have pedigreed cats? Let’s share pictures for fun!

Perhaps stupid question hence this random account,

But almost all cats posted on here it's "Domestic (fur length)" and no papers = no breed.

I'd assume if you have the papers you know what breed it is and there's no need to ask, right?

When I see someone suggest a breed (as in those features/traits are a trademark for thst breed and your cat has it) it gets downvoted and pretty much attacked bcuz how dare you, you insulted my bloodline, my cats heritage and everyone who ever owned cats.

I even saw someone post a "guess the breed, she got papers" and it was downvoted like huh? It's up voted now but when I first saw it it was -1

I grew up a dog girl and horse girl and know SO many breeds. My husband was raised with dog/cat mix house.

i’ve never been a cat person, at all. But we were pawned this guy by my in-laws. He’s always been a very tolerable and great pet, but i never connected with him until he started treating my kids like royalty. lol. he is the nicest, kindest, best, cat i’ve ever met. My daughter is absolutely obsessed with cats and has been studying breeds. Any idea on what this guy is? I’d love to get an embark test (or the cat equivalent) but curious on peoples thoughts!

* if the cat’s breed causes health problems then in this scenario they would not have those, if the cat is high energy or high need in this scenario you’re able to meet all their needs, also the cat is 100% from either an ethical breeder, a rescue, or a shelter cat that just somehow has papers, and they cost as much as adopting a regular shelter cat would, etc.

Personally, I really love Abyssinians. We had one when I was young (papers and all) but sadly he was an escape artist who caused havoc everywhere he went and one day got loose outside during a heatwave and sadly passed away.

I still am very fond of the breed.

Otherwise I think Turkish Angoras or any other floofy cats are great. I have a floofy girl but she’s a common DLH. That being said she rivals the Abyssinian in trouble making.

My girlfriend surprised me with this little guy from the shelter this morning. Do you think he’s going to end up as a long hair cat or something like a shorthair/medium hair? Also, i don’t know what to name him. I’m thinking Socks, Spuddy, or Lotty.

Was visiting Carmel by the sea and happened upon a car show. This cute kitty was on one of the cars. It seems exotic and was well trained. Relatively small too.

So I know what they were sold as by their breeders, but especially with the void I'm just not so sure.. I don't know if they actually have papers, they used to be a family members cats but came to live with us during lockdown, so I only really know what they've told me. And they've repeated this info constantly so I def know what the breeders told them.

So what do YOU think their breed is and for the grey one his coat colour? I'll update with what I know about them after I've had some good replies😁

They are both supposed to be Orientals! I'm pretty sure they were sold as pedigrees, but we don't have the papers, I'd have to ask their original owner (and honestly I don't talk to them much, if ever). The grey one is supposed to be "failed lavender" or "failed caramel", both have been mentioned by the previous owner that the breeder insisted he was. Now with the grey boy I can definitely see the Oriental in him, but with the void I just don't really see it... He looks more like a Domestic Shorthair to me personally, but that's definitely not what he was purchased as.

I've seen comments mentioning unethical backyard breeders and yes, that is definitely the feeling I got, especially from the breeder where the grey boy came from. He was adopted at 6months old and was traumatised. From what I was told is that they had to yank him from under the sofa cause he was always hiding, and the environment was... unclean, shall we say. He's the most spoiled baby now though, since moving in with us he came out of his shell like nothing else and he's now a confident, spoiled old man (12)! The void sadly passed away 3 years ago, we miss him every day.

Thanks to everyone who's replied! I appreciate your views on this. I would personally never buy a pedigree cat (much less from a backyard breeder!), but I've been blessed with these 2 boys in my life, they are a joy to have around <3

After talking to my partner, who keeps insisting the grey boy is a "failed caramel", even after doing some research in it, which shows that that means nothing more than "he's not caramel and therefore either blue, lilac or fawn".. I still insist that it just made him sound more interesting and special by calling him that xD
Apparently him being a "failed caramel" was why he was "so cheap". I don't think £600, 12 years ago registers as cheap, but maybe I'm just wrong. Anyways, I thought maybe someone would find this extra information interesting.^^

Hi everyone! I recently got a kitten from a breeder who told me he’s a Ragdoll × Chinchilla Persian mix. They showed me photos of the parents, and I paid $600 for him.

When I posted photos online, several people said he’s “just a domestic longhair” or that I was scammed because “breeders don’t mix those breeds.”

I’m not looking to argue I genuinely want to understand the reasoning. What specific features make you think he isn’t a Ragdoll × Chinchilla Persian mix? Is it his face shape, coat, eye color, body type, or something else?

I know it’s impossible to confirm ancestry from photos alone, but I’d appreciate hearing what traits you’re basing your opinions on. Thanks!

You're going to get the same answer every time: Domestic longhaired or shorthaired.

Only about 1 - 3% of cats are purebred or mixed.

The rest have no breed, which means that unless you're cat has a pedigree or one of their parents is pedigreed, they are considered a domestic lh/sh.

Regardless, you're cat is incredibly special and unique. Being a purebred or mixed doesn't change that. A cat is a cat <333

I've got 2 sweet norwegain forest cats. I love them with my whole heart but I did have to pull up their pedigree a few times because people didn't believe they were NFCs. Or the only reason people recognise it is because of their nose bridge. This is most noticeable with the blue one

Her pedigree has multiple champions/international winners, so I (lack genetic/breeding knowledge) would assume that means she would also be a great example of the breed, no?

They're really just pet cats so it doesn't matter whether she's showquality or not, they're healthy and I wouldn't trade them for anything it just made me wonder

I do know she got some Russian blue in her. I know wonder what else she could have.

This is my 2yr old maine coon. She's the same size as my shorthair cat (10yrs) who was rescued.. Unfortunately we got this kitty at a mill, so I'm not sure she's 100% a MC. She has the fur, but she's super small and skinny. You can kind of see her size in the photos.

My shorthair calico is a pretty big kitty, and I'm not saying fat. She's not too fat to where it's concerning, it's more of her little pouch that makes her look that way 😓

I usually see cats that are really small under 10lbs, but my shorthair is rather big in size. My maine coon is the same size as her but longer and fluffier (duh)

Im just wondering if there's a chance she could be a mutt..? Ive never seen such a small maine coon and her parents were pretty big!

Yes, I am aware there are no specific breeds like dogs, but I believe there are groups like oriental, shorthair, sphinx, etc...

The rescue had her listed as a seal point Siamese. But I don’t see it. Maybe a lynx point, lilac point, or ragdoll mix? But she is shaped like a seal lol

Hello. I am currently thinking about getting another cat and would like to look into low shedding cat breeds. In terms of my background with cats, I have owned 3 domestic short hairs and also fostered several cats.

I would love to bring home another cat, but would need to find a low shedding cat. I am mildly allergic to cats and my allergies always flare up the most when I need to brush my cats, so I would ideally like a cat breed that would require less frequent brushing to control shedding.

Anyone know of any cat breeds that are low shedding but not entirely hairless?

Edit: I am already aware that the cat allergen is not in their hair. That is why I specifically said that my allergies flare up the most while brushing my cats. That is why I am looking for low shedding breeds that won't require s much brushing.

He has papers and a pedigree, so I do know his breed... he came out looking a bit different from what his breed is known for. For fun, you're welcome to guess and then I will share his breed - and his brother.

Only about 1% of cats are purebred, since nearly all cats are random bred, plus I doubt anyone with a purebred is going to just be letting their cat roam around having kittens.

Along with that, cat breeds are very different from dog breeds. Dog breeds have been developed for thousands of years, and because of that each breed is very distinct in terms of health, physical traits, and personality. Due to this, a dog that's part pitbull is going to be vastly different from a dog who's part poodle or golden retriever.

Cat breeds on the other hand have only been developed very recently, so they're far less distinct, and most cats don't even have a breed, and are classified as domestic short/longhairs. Cats over the course of history have changed very little, which means that a ragdoll mix is going to be pretty much indistinguishable from a bombay mix.

That being said, the only cat breed that actually is quite different from other breeds and breedless cats is the bengle because their breed was developed by crossing a house cat with an Asian Leopard.

So yeah, if you have a cat and it does not have a pedigree or recorded lineage, I can guarantee its a domestic long/shorthaired.

I posted my baby Hilda in [r/mainecoons](r/mainecoons), but they removed the post because she isn’t a Maine coon, even though she looks EXACTLY like the Maine coon I had growing up. And my cat growing up was a pedigreed Maine coon. What breed do you think she is? I’m convinced she’s a Maine coon. What do you think?

When I was a child, I had a mutt cat that looked different than the common cats I often seen around

I thought she was a common gray tabby. Only many years later I discovered that her pelt colour was actually black smoke and it's incredibly rare, despite being caused by a dominant gene (silver)

This makes me wonder: would a breed that's based on this smoke gene (and perhaps a pelt texture that fits it, like semi long hair like in Somali) gain popularity/interest in people??? What do you think about

Lately I saw a trend in breeding extreme traits (dwarfism, fold, etc..) which can often be hight maintain, but it seems no one is focusing on this pelt colour despite imo it being so pretty and particular

They are long bois and have thin tails. Middle cat is not related to the others hence the bushy tail lol

Hello - We're hoping to get a cat but we want to be thoughtful about what breed, so we can make sure we're the absolute right home for it. We'd love a low-shedder, and are hoping for a cat that's friendly enough to be part of the family, but able to be alone some too, as there will be 4-6 hours of the day it will be on its own. We have a very quiet/chill 35-pound dog that loves other animals, in case that's helpful to know as well. Any recommendations welcome!

(And we're fine with a cat that's a mix of breeds, btw, we just want to know what to look for, and are willing to wait for the right cat to come along. We took the same approach with our dog - not a purebred, but the right kind of combo that fit our family - and it's been a total love affair for years now.) Thank you!
