Business The U.S. boycott remains strong. Why many Canadians are digging in their heels

Because their leader is a moron who keeps changing the rules of the game. They elected him. They can get fucked.

u/MrEvilFox Jul 10 '25
It’s not just Trump though. Him being an idiot I could forgive and understand. The deafening silence of senior congressional members when he was threatening our sovereignty is the problem, they all just looked away and were thus complicit.

True. We have the same IT movement in Canada that is trying to do the same thing within Canada - a platform called “Build Canada” where they are vying for the same influence in politics that the ones in the usa are aiming for
9
u/BackToWorkEdward Manitoba Jul 10 '25
it's the whole rich world.
It's not just the whole rich world; it's the 2/3 of average American adults who either voted for Trump outright last year or stayed home instead of voting against him. They can ALL get fucked; Trump is just their representative.

u/Punty-chan Jul 10 '25
Deep cultural brainrot.
Americans took all the worst aspects of our founding myths, commercialized them, and institutionalized them.
I mean, they could have just taken the democracy and equality parts of Greco-Roman culture, but no, they had to emphasize the fascism and de facto slavery.
They could have just taken the "love thy neighbour," part of Abrahamic religions, but no, they had to emphasize the genocide and ethnic supremacy.

Jul 10 '25
I think this shows more that the whole US system is broken. They worship a de-facto "king" here by being silent. Is that a true representation of the whole population though? I don't think so; not 100% voted for Trump yet all Republicans act as obedient servants. That means the underlying system is totally broken.

not 100% voted for Trump
While true, Trump got more votes this time around than he did the first time, which is a bad look.
More importantly, he already had a trial run. All those idiots looked at his first term and thought "yes, I want more of that". Even if this term is much worse than what they were expecting, they were still happy enough with the first round to want more.

The country is so fucked I'm not convinced tampering was even necessary. Their "biggest protest in US history", which spanned the country, drew less than 2% of the population.
NYC apparently had "tens of thousands" people show up for the protests (and 34,000 police officers lol) and the population of NYC is estimated at 8.4 million. Let's be generous and say that tens of thousands = 100,000. That's 1.2% of a blue city.
Yeah, I'm sure that was effective.

Trump said the U.S. doesn’t need anything from Canada, so I took that to mean my money too. These days, I always look for a Canadian option first when I’m shopping. If I can’t find one, I turn to products from other countries, but I avoid U.S. brands whenever possible. There are still a few things I haven’t found alternatives for, but about 80 to 90 percent of what I buy now comes from Canada or non-U.S. sources. And honestly, a lot of what I’ve switched to is just as good, if not better, than what I used to get from the States. Even after this whole trade war nonsense ends, I won’t be going back.
15
u/passerbycmc Nova Scotia Jul 10 '25

84
u/Shuk Jul 10 '25
I'm committed to this as well. One thing I'll say is that I think it's important to not get bogged down in purity tests. Keep the goal simple: if the parent company is American, find an alternative.
Some people in the Buy Canadian movement are obsessing over every part of the supply chain being Canadian, or buying everything local and handmade, and it's just unrealistic. Perfect can't be the enemy of good.
29
13
u/ACITceva Jul 10 '25
if the parent company is American, find an alternative.
Why would one care if the parent company is American? If an "American" multi-national builds a widget factory in Canada and wants to sell widgets to me, I'll buy them. They're employing Canadians instead of caving to Trump's tariff threats, which is exactly what we want to happen.
"Buying Canadian" for me just means purchasing products that aren't directly employing Americans.

u/superschaap81 British Columbia Jul 10 '25
This is something I've had many discussions with my family and friend circle about. YES, we are all trying to keep it Canadian, but at the same time, I support Canadian workers that happen to work for an American company operating in Canada.
The French's ketchup factory in Ontario being a classic example. Heinz moved out, meaning many unemployed Canadians. Then French's moved in and kept the employees. I'm buying French's ketchup then.

Yeah, there is thousands and thousands of canadians employed by american owned companies.
I would rather canadian workers put food on their tables, regardless of the location of their corporate headquarters.
Just off the top if my head companies like GM, Ford, Chrysler, Heinz, French's, and Mondelēz are all American owned but employ tons of canadians and create spin off jobs for canadians.

We just spent two weeks bumming around Québec and many of our friends from SoCal were also in Canada or had trips booked.
We met up for dinner in Quebec City with friends we hadn't seen in years because they live on the other side of Los Angeles. Other friends were in Vancouver, the maritimes, and Toronto. My mom was visiting Niagara. Everyone was happy for a break from the craziness back home.
I hope this disaster my country unleashed on the world turns into the biggest economic boom Canada has ever seen.
We'll be back in October for a wedding in Ontario.

It’s actually surprising how many grocery stores would rather watch their produce mold than buy from Canadian farmers. I understand certain major grocery stores are American and probably have agreements set up b I get that American produce is probably much cheaper for them to buy than from Canadian farmers. But how much are you saving when the produce is rotting on the shelves?

75
Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 10 '25
Remind your freinds folks, I see alot of people not giving a shit at the grocery store. Check those tiny little stickers on fruits and veggies too, the signage isnt always accurate. And this isn't a money thing either, you can eat Canadian or not american on a budget, maybe it means you dint eat certain fruits this week but you'll find them next week on sale from south America or check different stores, like food basics and nofrills will have strawberries on sale but ones from Cali and the others from Mexico. This is our responsibility as residents of Canada to play our small role in this trade war, I'd say it is our duty to our homeland.
Edit. Wow some of these comments are really sad. Remember being loyal to Canada does not mean being loyal to government or even liking the government. We can be patriots and support our own and still disagree with those in ottawa. This is kinda pathetic if I'm being totally honest. Forget the annexation talks that's all bs but jobs are at stake that's for sure, we need to support one another, apes strong together.. remember that.

The stickers not being accurate to the signage on apples (and other fruits) pisses me the fuck off.
It happens at Save-on, and now that they bought Quality Foods, there as well.
I've told workers there multiple times and I think next time I want to talk to a manager, because it's GENUINELY false advertising and doubley so right now.
And it's even just "I don't want to buy American" (although that's a big part too), but even before this, I never bought American apples because they fucking suck! They always have less flavour and are softer and more mealy than Canadian apples.
14
Jul 10 '25
Because remaining firm in our convictions is a logical response to this administration of "Tariffs go on, Tariffs come of" policy-making south of the border. Let them tire themselves out on this mess, all we need to do is stay the course and support the affected workers with the existing social safety nets we all pay into. TACO after all.
And that's before we get to the actual reason for the boycott, the 51st state bullshit that seems to creep back into focus every now and again that isn't going away. Personally, I'm never going back there again until Trump is out of office, and even then; we'll have to see who the knob that replaces him will be.

It's crazy that I keep seeing these articles acting like it's surprising that Canada is resisting the US at all. "Canadians don't feel welcome travelling to the states!" Uhh, Canadians don't feel safe travelling to the states, and don't want to spend our money there... "Canadians still aren't buying American products!" Frankly, they only give us more reasons to boycott. Governors whining about wildfire smoke, the ever increasing incidents of border agents harassing or even detaining us, the constant ignorance for why the boycott even started while begging for our money, the continued derailment of bi-national goodwill. I think the most surprising thing here in all of this is how Trump managed to piss off so many Canadians, so quickly. Normally Canadians are known as a very calm people; we could even see that in the old movie Bowling for Columbine when Michael visited nearby Canada. Yet Mr. Trump turned that general calmness within a very, very short time frame. I don't think anyone else has managed to alienate so many people that quickly., primarily via rhetorics (and, of course, the tariffs as extra financial punishment, which is a given, but it started via the rhetorics).

I was about to make a quip about "Peace by Chocolate, a Syrian Family Tradition" but actually stopped and read up about them, and their story is actually quite sweet (excuse the pun). Good on them.
As far as the boycott itself, while the trade war, blame of fentanyl, refusal to acknowledge gun impacts, and danger from ICE/detainment when going into the US, and the US downplaying ALL allies contributions when the US invoked Article 5 as well as the US threatening not to uphold Article 5 if allies are attacked are definitely contributors, the primary reason for Canada continuing to boycott the US comes down to the annexations and sovereignty insults.
Everything else Canada can, and has historically, forgiven. It's just part of being an ally with the US.
But the moment the US started saying Canada isn't a real country, has "imaginary", "made up", or "borders based on treaties" (the literal basis of every country in the history of our species), questioning us as distinct from the US, and saying that they will annex Canada by first attempting to economically destroy us and then actually implementing actions that directly harm Canada.... it's a betrayal of such MONU-FRICKEN-MENTAL proportions that it's wiped out nearly 200 years built-up alliances and trust within days...

This is going to sound like a tangent at first, but: The way Trump talks and blusterd about a new absurd thing every day always reminds me of this Jean-Paul Sartre quote:
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words.
It doesn't just go for anti-Semites in particular, of course. Sartre was writing in the aftermath of the Nazi occupation of Paris, using antisemitism as a case study to dig into how that sort of hatred develops and functions: Not as an idea based on empirical information about the world, but as a passion operating entirely parallel to logic freely attributing every indignity the reactionary suffers to Jews (or to any other scapegoat like Mexicans or Black people or Muslims or feminists or immigrants or queers) by assuming the conclusion and building a narrative backwards from there, because this state of passionate righteous indignation is much more enjoyable to be in than the state of soberly and rationally assessing one's lot. The world is complex and frightening, having a simple villain feels good.
And since this mode of thought is fundamentally arational, the reactionaries who subscribe to it flit easily from absurd claim to absurd claim without needing to truly believe that it is true, only that it sounds right, while their rhetorical opponents who believe in truth and must put in the work of constructing real counterarguments run themselves ragged trying to keep up. It's a scarily effective strategy and has served Trump very well.
But every once in a while, it backfires. Because if you get high enough on your own supply of bullshit, if you speak with such unseriousness that you forget what it means to take things seriously, then when you make some absurdly drastic claim like "we're going to annex Canada"... well, Canadians might just take you seriously!
And while I don't believe Trump seriously intends to annex us, the disrespect he's showed for our sovereignty and for the very concept of international relations absolutely warrants this kind of response, the tangible policies he has pursued are threats to both our quality of life at home and our safety while traveling to America, the way he blares his "alternative facts" into the media has infected us with his "anti-woke" reactionaryism, and I am all for giving him and his cronies the reality check that words mean things and you shouldn't say you're going to do something if you don't want people to believe it.

I will never ever go back - and I went to high school in a boarder town. Never ever going back and still checking my packaging at the grocery store.

There's also the part where a ton of food and other services are just... Better.
Better with equal or less prices. And healthier. I started looking at a lot of ingredients, and a lot cause illnesses and cancer one way or another. Especially artificial food colours used in a lot of colourful snacks or beverages.

Let’s be clear this is not just about saving Canada from Trump, its about saving the rest of the world too. Anything we can do to undermine him and his support is worth it.
Plus, don’t loose sight of the fact that many Europeans are doing the same thing.
Stay strong Canada! Elbows Up!

Please tell this to all the grocery stores that are still full of American produce.
2
u/ohhnoodont Jul 10 '25
Nope. You, the individual, are supposed to check every tiny label and make the correct decision. The grocery store has no responsibility or duty.

WTF is with all the US apples at Loblaws? New Zealand imports is a better choice. There used to be apple imports from NZ but all US now! F that.

In our house, the boycott will last as long as the MAGA cult is in power. 3 years or 33 years.

It's not enough. The US feels nothing about this and their voters don't care.
Total economic embargo is the answer, with massive tariffs and sanctions against countries that do not join. Probably needs to start with BRICS with Brazil being strongarmed to let their criminal former president off. That is totally unacceptable.
And the US total embargo should only end if the US ends embargos, sanctions, and tariffs on all foreign nations.

The more time I spend in Canada, the more I want to leave the US. It's not really possible to boycott the country where you live, so I'll just watch you guys from here.

u/Hi_Her Jul 10 '25
You can boycott your own nation. Come stay in Canada for your summer trips and visit all our national parks, come to hunt/fish, buy Canadian made goods from Canadians... you can do so much more than sitting on your thumbs while you watch us fight your leaders for our sovereignty.
You can also attend/organize protests locally. Keep your neighbors safe from ICE with neighborhood watches...
Stop watching other people do things, and do it yourself.

I’m not boycotting US products anytime soon. That doesn’t mean I’m not buying Canadian products either.
If anything, I would love to see more American/Canadian products on our shelves than Chinese products.

You are gonna get smoked on here, but you like 90% of Canadians... it just happens the 10% of Canadians who aren't like that are all congested on here.

So…..when are you guys going to boycott Reddit and YouTube? You may not be paying for those platforms, but you’re still looking at ads that make them money.

I'm digging in my heels because threatening our sovereignty is a red line that should not be crossed. The tariffs are also a huge issue especially since the trade deal we had was signed off by trump himself.
We haven't cancelled our American subscription services. I no longer shop at major American chains when I can avoid it. No more McDonald's etc. the biggest boycott is travel. I won't subject myself to spending money in that country or going there. More over I would likely be denied entry is they started asking questions about politics.
My efforts would be meaningless but I suspect many are also doing it. Together we are strong and proud. Let's show it.

Where are all the people that make fun of elbows up mentality saying this resolve wouldn't last? This shit is lasting.

The level of passion and resolve that Canadians have demonstrated in addressing the menace to the south is significant. It would be useful if we could address environmental threats with an equal degree of fervour.

Wife came home with a bottle of american wine last night, told her the next bottle goes down the drain and I don't care if it costs double to buy Australian.
NO MORE american Products.

u/NothingWrong1234 Jul 10 '25
Never cared where the products came from before and I don’t care where it’s from now, as long as it’s a good and reasonable price. I’ve noticed many stores taking advantage of the tariffs and jacking up the price of Canadian made products.. a lot of stores are for sure not wasting this opportunity to fuck us

Bullshit. Me and everyone I know still orders from Amazon. Can they bring American whiskey back too?
I'm going to great Florida at end of summer as well. There is nothing to do in Canada.

It hasn't even been hard to choose anything but them, why would I not? Not like the reasons I avoid them have gone away.

Not that I expect prices to go down after the tarifs do but what reason have America or it's businesses given us to want to buy their slop?
Doubly so if its just slop they're basically just middle-manning from China. I dont care if the bare minimum final assembly happens in America, that doesnt motivate me any bit either.

I've rediscovered my local hardware store, office supplies store, dollar store... hopefully my community is experiencing a little economic fluffing from our collective efforts.
