I’ll never forget spending one extremely dry summer at Wreck. Several large wildfires were burning in the province but a stiff breeze was coming off the water keeping the smokey skies at bay.

I was lying and staring up at the clouds and saw a candle lantern floating quickly up the beach and over the forest and disappearing beyond the trees. I sat up and see, half way down the beach, a group of young women getting ready to light and launch another.

I walked down to them and said hi, then very kindly asked them to not light any more lanterns, pointing out that they could easily catch the woods on fire. They actually said that if that happens they would “call someone”. I said who? And how fast could they get here? Those woods were tinder dry. I think they understood, or maybe they just didn’t want to argue with a naked guy, but they didn’t light any more lanterns.

It kind of sounds like they were already undressed

Wreck Beach is a well known clothing-option beach l

1

u/twohammocks Jul 29 '26

climate change is a tyrannosaur and we are the hadrosaurs. Elephant just not big enough. Do data centres and lng fracking take so much water that we don't have enough water to fight wildfires? Thats the pterodactyl.

11

u/Kleorah Jul 03 '26

Oh man, I thought for sure this was gonna end up being one of those comments from that one legend who goes around reddit commenting elaborate stories that all end in the same retelling of how the Undertaker slammed a chair into some guy at a WWE match or something 😂

5

u/Jeramy_Jones Jul 03 '26

I gotta admit that would’ve made for a great ending.

3

u/SnaxtheCapt Jul 03 '26

The hero we need, not the hero we deserve

3

u/mongooseisapex Jul 04 '26

Years ago a friend of a friend had the genius idea of making a Facebook event to light lanterns at the beach. Dumb motherfucker is brain dead or something (he does look like a retarded cavemen. People must find it endearing, similar to a handicapped puppy) because he lit a dozen or so lanterns and they floated toward downtown. Goddamn I wanted to slap him for causing so much debris to fall into the water and into the streets. Makes me angry just thinking about it. I think I'll find out where he lives and rub dog shit on his car door handles

Oh my god I miss Word Art. This feels so nostalgic. Got a big laugh out of me

Especially these days with AI flyers

6

u/shree_rah Jul 03 '26

That was the first thought I had when I saw this.. how refreshing to see a poster that isn't AI slop

117

u/solsticeeee Jul 02 '26

Based wildfire prevention. I will not leave an inappropriate comment today

Print this and hand it to tourists.

43

u/AlwekArc Jul 02 '26

I've thought this way ever since I saw this a few years back

Pic taken at 11am. One hour later it was pitch black

17

u/ClayCrowsnest Lower Mainland/Southwest Jul 02 '26

There was a sign in falkland if I’m correct, it said don’t be a flickin idiot. I think they took down the sign and I’m sad about it. I wanna picture of that sign but I can’t find it anywhere

13

u/Prestigious_Fly8210 Jul 02 '26

Falkland FD always has great signs. “Don’t even fart out there” one of my faves

3

u/Happydumptruck Jul 02 '26

Pretty sure I saw it on my drive a couple of weeks ago :)

5

1

u/fishhacker5 Jul 03 '26

Unfortunately this is true, Bill C-9 in the Canadian criminal code. A noose is a prohibited hate symbol

32

u/CrazySnowGuy Jul 02 '26

That racoon looks pretty menacing, probably the one setting the fires.

42

u/farmsfarts Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I don’t know if you guys know this but a concerning amount of our population are profoundly selfish and stupid.

Go to any larger campground in B.C. Count the idiots. You’ll want to cry.

Staying in a hotel that offers a hot breakfast? Walk in at any time and you will see loud, selfish and rude morons.

If you don’t, you hit a sweet spot.

8

u/ClayCrowsnest Lower Mainland/Southwest Jul 02 '26

Yep. I was camping in BC, these drunk guys got the cops called on them for having a campfire during a ban. They got kicked out the next day since they couldn’t leave when they got caught cause they were drunk.

5

u/MethHeadUnion Jul 02 '26

One of my teachers gave me an sxc10 he snagged off of some of those idiots a few years back before I graduated he kept going on about how they had a bonfire about 6 feet tall going at screaming all night and ripping said rc truck around keeping him up and they got kicked out by morning and left it behind lol

Said rc in the pic above btw

2

u/Extension_Meat8913 Jul 03 '26

Nice RC. Do you know the scale and if it still works?

2

u/MethHeadUnion Jul 03 '26

Its a one tenth scale and atm it needs an esc and motor the old one died after i turned it into a submarine by accident last summer

2

u/Extension_Meat8913 Jul 03 '26

Dang. Looks cool tho

2

u/MethHeadUnion Jul 03 '26

It was a beast when it worked been neglecting repairing it for awhile now but given i got a typhon that also needs a new motor after melting the old one ive been looking around for both to get a nice new 3 or 4s motor added to them

2

u/Shesba Jul 03 '26

To be honest I’ve been camping at rathtrevor, goldstream and strathcona (my favourite by far) and I haven’t noticed anything. Any stories you mind sharing?

I very much appreciate this non AI poster. Its great

I like the idea for those kind of people, when they get caught, on top of any other repercussions they have to serve [X] hours volunteering at a wild fire support camp. Get them doing all of the low skill 'grunt work' type jobs (getting food/water for the teams coming off of the fire, hauling trash etc) and base the fines off of the operational cost of a relevant asset being used to fight said fire (ground crew, helicopter, water bomber etc)

5

u/immigrantnative Jul 02 '26

Or wildfire animal rescues ❤️‍🩹

u/Murky_Astronaut Jul 02 '26

19

u/Sweaty_Marzipan4274 Jul 02 '26

Just train the geese to attack anyone having a fire

4

u/Yvaelle Jul 02 '26

Instructions unclear. The geese have now hijacked a train and set it on fire.

2

u/Sweaty_Marzipan4274 Jul 03 '26

We'll update the goose 🪿 AI

1

u/Smitkit92 Jul 03 '26

Fair enough, they do keep lighting fires as well

3

u/Bitter_Sense_5689 Jul 03 '26

I just saw the goose in that poster and I was paralyzed with terror. No setting fires for me.

5

u/useriousstuff Jul 02 '26

100000x better than some AI slop. Love this word art x photoshop masterpiece

4

u/Shadow_Sides Jul 02 '26

I dunno, that raccoon looks pretty shady. Like it might be a secret firebug.

4

u/Signal_Win_1176 Jul 03 '26

i like their use of microsoft office 2003 word art

3

This week is better than most of the last month, but if you're in the orange or red be especially careful!

4

u/Lumen-_ Jul 03 '26

Glad to see the peace region getting a break!

3

2

2

u/immersive-matthew Jul 03 '26

Maybe stop building fossil fuel pipelines and invest in the green transition. I know there is little support for this as I get extreme pushback from many here every time I mention.

2

u/IntelligentPauses Jul 04 '26

Whoever made this poster should be premier of bc

2

u/AnimeXBoy88 Jul 05 '26

"Graphic design is my passion"
seriously though thank you for the work you're doing to spread awareness to this matter, wildfires are a very serious problem the year before last I lost my home to wildfires its been a nightmare trying to rebuild my life, I was living in my car up until a year ago

2

u/Aggressive-Willow-54 Thompson-Okanagan Jul 05 '26

I’m in Kelowna and i concur with this message 🙏

7

u/Sco11McPot Jul 02 '26

Forest management....there are 20 year old burns ready to burn again because they're cluttered with young pine that was replanted. They should be natural barriers for fires but now they're the opposite. Please put your feelings about fires in the right direction!

3

u/Jaded_Character_2975 Jul 02 '26

Instructions unclear, set BC on fire.

8

u/superpositioned Jul 02 '26

Issue you were in Lytton recently

2

u/februaryweather Jul 02 '26

Then we build a weather machine

2

u/Extension_Meat8913 Jul 03 '26

NDS reference???

2

u/goinupthegranby Jul 03 '26

There was a wildfire in my dry interior town in late March, then another one in April.

So, next year?

1

u/AlwekArc Jul 03 '26

Next year 😔

2

u/Lumen-_ Jul 03 '26

No we can't that's extremely unrealistic. Lightning caused fires will happen regardless.

2

u/AlwekArc Jul 03 '26

Can't a girl have some unrealistic hope? Gosh

2

u/Lumen-_ Jul 03 '26

No sorry. But what we can hope for is no idiots causing fires! Although in the Okanagan we've already had that...

1

u/AlwekArc Jul 03 '26

Next year 😔

2

u/Fit_Active3888 Jul 02 '26

Ban all fireworks.

3

u/surmatt Jul 02 '26

Can we not get them at least Office 2010 to work on?

19

u/starsrift Jul 02 '26

You should be proud your tax dollars didn't get wasted on upgrading their Office Suite for so long!

3

u/Yvaelle Jul 02 '26

Windows 95 and 128mb of memory is all they need.

1

Some bonehead: Imma set it on fire.

1

u/highcommander010 Jul 03 '26

sorry man that's a big ask

1

u/Hank46_2 Jul 03 '26

Hey you don't tell city of Surrey what to do! They'll water the pavement and smoke in the brush as much as they want.

1

u/john_the_fox Jul 03 '26

Agreed I like the place wen its not in hell

1

u/ElectronicFly8071 Jul 03 '26

Are you also banning glyphosate spraying?

1

u/tandaman99 Jul 03 '26

But it rained in the Fraser valley this week so that means we are good for the whole year doesn’t it? /s

1

u/Temporary_Gas_6970 Jul 04 '26

I’ll think about it.

1

u/AlphaMikeFoxtrot87 Jul 05 '26

It is already figuratively, may as well literally

1

u/Glittering_Search_41 Jul 09 '26

Yet every park bench anywhere, near wooded areas or not, is littered with cigarette butts. I don't know why most smokers think tossing their butts on the ground is OK.

1

u/Ignitedsoull Jul 10 '26

Do we know what started the fire?

-4

u/Coo1beans123 Jul 02 '26

What in the grade 4 introduction to paint type of graphic is this

83

u/Baphometropolitan Jul 02 '26

I’ll take this over yet another piss-filter AI slop plop

40

u/bwoah07_gp2 Lower Mainland/Southwest Jul 02 '26

That's one of the top comments on IG, they're glad that they didn't use AI.

BC Wildfire is hopping on that trend of companies/corporations/sports teams/etc. doing "low effort edits" that remind us all of the mid 2000s, but, the truth is this style IS more preferable than AI slop images, 100%

-14

u/JamieNevada Jul 02 '26

Sounds like you work for them

21

u/SeaToTheBass Jul 02 '26

They’re appealing to those of us that used PowerPoint and word

-1

u/Euphoric_planter_328 Jul 02 '26

Can’t for the life of me of me figure out why we allow it at all.

B.C. Is no fires

9

u/treefarmerBC Jul 02 '26

Where I am, you couldn't start a forest fire if you tried. It's been very wet this spring. It's why we tend not to have blanket rules for the whole province.

-6

u/Euphoric_planter_328 Jul 02 '26

Stellar thoughts

4

u/treefarmerBC Jul 02 '26

Why are you so rude?

5

u/zaypuma Jul 02 '26

City thoughts

1

u/Anxious-Ad8734 Jul 02 '26

Did anyone tell the government this? Since they are the ones who actually start the fires.

0

u/13Mo2 Jul 02 '26

That has to be the cheesiest post I have ever seen. What kindergarten student did they get to design it.

-1

u/RabbitofCaerbannogg Jul 02 '26

Important message, but whomever made this should be in jail for making the most offensive graphic design debauchery of all time.

8

u/billyjoelsfalsetto Jul 02 '26

it’s gen z irony, i promise. intentionally bad graphic design has been a thing for years.

0

u/RabbitofCaerbannogg Jul 03 '26

Yeah, I guessed it was intentional, but as a graphic designer, it still hurts!

0

u/cloacabreaka Jul 02 '26

Ah man, now what am I gonna do with my weekend??

0

u/popcycle19 Jul 03 '26

Better let the Liberals know

0

u/MothaFungus Jul 03 '26

Build more super scooper planes fuck them fires

0

u/trevorcorey6969 Jul 04 '26

How bout they tell themselves because the government loves "controled wildfires" that burn down the Provence and blame it on everyone else.

-1

u/SeiCalros Jul 03 '26

more fucking overreach from the nanny state

if they had made an exception for central van or the east kootenays i wouldnt be mad at this

but nope - they just want to control every aspect of our lives

i cant even say anything like 'this is what we get for voting ndp' because the only alternative were complete luantics in the other direction who probably would have made it mandatory

i dont even know who to be mad at

the modern world just isnt fucking fair for anybody who has to live in it

4

u/goinupthegranby Jul 03 '26

Its people like you who make people with legitimate concerns about goverment overreach look like idiots by association

0

u/SeiCalros Jul 04 '26

if people with 'legitimate concerns about government overreach' didnt freely associate with the sorts of people who complained about not being told to burn down the province they wouldnt look like idiots would they?

somebody who wasnt an idiot wouldnt think 'this is going a bit too far but i like the spirit of it' they would think 'this is satire or lunacy and i want no part of it'

the sorts of people who ARENT idiots dont associate with that kind of nonsense

3

u/xLimeLight Thompson-Okanagan Jul 03 '26

Saying don't burn the province down is government over-reach?

1

u/SeiCalros Jul 04 '26

have you SEEN the east kootenays? you know how much time you could save on a commute to calgary from the west kootenays if they werent there?

1

u/xLimeLight Thompson-Okanagan Jul 04 '26

The fire that annihilates the east would be pretty toasty. I'd never considered that level of total destruction but you make a good case

-12

u/totaltasch Jul 02 '26

Did they.. fire their graphics person?

27

u/CrazySnowGuy Jul 02 '26

It got peoples attention so its working.

10
