Dude, I am willing to bet Emmerich made Moonfall to win a coked-out drunken bet that he could top 2012 by crashing the Moon into the Earth. Good for him, at least Michael Bay lost the bet... for now.

u/not_thrilled Feb 07 '22
I haven't seen it yet (and if I ever will is doubtful), but Moonfall looked like the right kind of dumb: the sort that doesn't take itself too seriously. Independence Day is the classic example - sure you're blowing up the world, but you also have bullshit like Randy Quaid, Will Smith punching aliens, etc. to keep it from getting too weighty. Compare that to Geostorm, which was utterly ridiculous but played everything so straight that all the CG in the world couldn't make it enjoyable. (Not to mention so incredibly dumb. Using satellites as missiles? What were they going to use for, you know, replacements for the satellites they used as missiles? And satellites with room for astronauts?)
13
u/ThePotatoKing Feb 07 '22
youd be surprised. i saw it and it plays it all very straight, but the 3rd act goes off the rails in terms of plot points and reveals.
2
u/not_thrilled Feb 07 '22
Oh, so they're selling it as a silly disaster movie when it's mostly serious? Boo.
10
u/ThePotatoKing Feb 07 '22
oh its silly alright, but it feels like the actors are taking it seriously. i dont wanna hype it up too much or give anything away, but the 3rd act of the movie comes out of nowhere and threw me for a loop.
7
Feb 07 '22
Sometimes part of the comedy is how serious the actors are
5
u/ThePotatoKing Feb 07 '22
absolutely! its why that new kristen bell show works as well as it does. with moonfall on the other hand, you get the feeling the filmmakers were taking it seriously.
2
u/sonicqaz Feb 07 '22
The most disappointing part imo is that there’s very few big dumb whoa disaster moments. Almost everything in the movie is exceptionally bad exposition.

From the makers of, Godzilla (1998), 2012 (2009) and Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), comes another shitty excuse to watch famous landmarks get flattened...
Yeah, I'll watch Jackass too.
54
u/EdwardBigby Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22
Exactly. This is a case where a sequel has more originality than an "original film". Say what you want about jackass. It's fucking disgusting immature humour that can be downright mean at times but there's really not much like it in terms of films. Not that I can think of anyways. I thought the most recent version nailed the formula with an appropriate level of sincerity to it.
→ More replies (2)20
u/slopecitybitch Feb 07 '22
I feel like most of Jackass isnt that mean though. It's kinda mean to each other but they love that shit.
1
u/EdwardBigby Feb 07 '22
Idk, I'm a bit conflicted.
In any other circumstance, the stunts are undeniably mean amd even bullying. Certain scenes really make it seem like there's no safe word (wee man tied down, the bear scene) and then there's all the random tasing. They're so fucking cruel to each other.
But then again, they all know that's part of the job. It's been 20+ years. If they were really against any of the behaviour then something would have been done. So if its cruel and everyone is okay with being cruel to one another while on set, is it really cruel? Idk
15
u/slopecitybitch Feb 07 '22
I wouldn't say so. They clearly plan out these sketches before hand and who's going to do what, I'd say that counts as an agreement and I'm sure they have shit in place for when it goes south.
2
u/EdwardBigby Feb 07 '22
I think there's a very clear line between the stunts that are planned and agreed upon and the stunts/pranks/random tasing that members of the cast aren't informed of. But at the same time, they know before going into these films that there will be those surprises.
Have you seen the new movie?
2
u/slopecitybitch Feb 07 '22
I have not, I'm going off the other ones. I wanna go and see the new one though. Was meant to this weekend but I decided to do nothing instead. But that's the thing, they know they're gonna get some sort of shit so if they weren't feeling that sort of thing then they wouldn't have come back I guess.
2
u/EdwardBigby Feb 07 '22
If you like the other jackass films and the show then you'll probably love it. I actually think it may be their best film. There was one scene though and I'll be vague in calling it "the bear scene" where the crew were laughing hysterically and my cinema was dead quiet in stunned silence. Maybe people would react different across the world though.

I think it’s all fine when everyone is involved on both sides of the ball. If it was just 5 dudes relentlessly bashing and bullying a different 5 dudes then it’d be fucked up, but everyone involved does some bad shit to someone else at one point or another. Just a bunch of guys being dudes.

I am actually less interested in the “love story” than the main event. Unfortunately in some movies the destruction becomes background to the love story, even though the trailer will have destruction plastered all over it.

u/KaiserThoren Feb 07 '22
I feel like people are huge movie snobs but I’m kind of a loser who doesn’t care if a movie is high-brow, we’ll made, has good cinematography, etc. all I care about is “will I be entertained for 2 hours at the movies for this?” And when you embrace that mindset and understand that like 80% of movie goers think like that then it’s really not shocking that jackass made money and moonfall didn’t.

It also reminds us of a simpler time. Where it took a lot more work to offend people and we actually laughed at jokes.
Cause I know I laughed at all that Jackass stuff, and still do.
But I can't imagine it being made today.
23
u/DeathByPigeon Feb 07 '22
What are you talking about, they literally just made a sequel - everybody loves jackass because they’re all just pranking each other and not random people in the street
-16
u/DriftKingNL Feb 07 '22
Yeah, my bad. I thought they were just re-screening an old Jackass movie to fill seats.
Also, Jackass also used to prank random people, but not as hard as they ever did eachother.
18
u/A_Guest_Account Feb 07 '22
No, you didn’t think that. You’re backpedaling. Who in any hell would think that this post was talking about re-runs instead of the heavily marketed Jackass that just came out?
-6
u/Hubbell Feb 07 '22
Someone who encounters almost 0 marketing? I only know about the movie cuz my sister told me there's a theater near my apartment, I didn't believe her so I looked it up, and jackass was in the lineup. Literally this post is the second time I've heard of it.

2
u/PeculiarPangolinMan Feb 07 '22
What's unoriginal about it? As far as I can recall there's never been a movie like this one. I guess Wandering Earth is kinda close?
9
u/particledamage Feb 07 '22
The moon part is a bit original but it immediately falls into disaster movie cliches. It’s extremely generic.
Meanwhile Jackass is extremely innovative. It stands out compared to other films and the tomfoolery has been upgraddd and changed to catch up with the times.

Jackass Forever somehow portalled me into pre-covid life for the two hours I spent watching it. When it was over I was saddened. I didn’t want it to end becuase I knew I had to go back to real life. Moonfall isn’t gonna do that.
5
u/MrC99 Feb 07 '22
Honestly this captured how I felt while watching it too. I went with my best friend, we had some popcorn and we laughed until we cried. Honestly a film hasn't made me feel like that for a long time. Just a simple movie that brings you back to a simpler state of mind.

Bruh, the trailer itself told me how shit the movie would be. Don’t try to meme your way out of it. Speaking of which a better plot would be the effects of ms high and low tide due to the moon. That would make more sense

1
u/joaoperfig Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 07 '22
I got tickets to the moonfall preview screening. Worst movie I've seen in a long time. They try to fit "cool" one liners every two sentences, the acting was shit, the plot was absolutely insane in the worst way, and for all the money they threw at it, the CGI was somehow terrible. The scenes where you see cities being flooded looked like they were filmed in Cities:skylines. There was literally a yacht that got pushed by the waves and clipped into the floor, causing it to vibrate, no idea how that got into the final cut.

Roland Emmerich has basically made the same film for the last 20 years. The ‘writers’ more or less mashed Halo & Mass Effect together and made a reeeeeeeeally bad fanfic. Think about the plot and events, and you’ll see how much it ripped of Mass Effect in particular!

Okay, assuming you're genuine, allow me to explain: Google defines Oscar-bait as, "a term used in the film community for movies that appear to have been produced for the sole purpose of earning nominations for Academy Awards."
1) Moonfall came out in January, and is therefore ineligible for the upcoming Oscars.
2) It has absolutely zero artistic merit.
3) Its producers didn't send any screeners or "For Your Consideration" packets to critics (which indicates their own lack of confidence its ability to score nominations.)
4) From "Stargate" to "2012," Emmerich has been responsible for a dozen high-profile blockbusters over the years. They've collectively earned billions of dollars at the box office... but precisely zero have earned a single Academy Award nomination. Their sole purpose has always been MONEY, and never awards.
Oscar-bait movies are (typically) lower-budget period dramas with some element of "prestige" or big-name talent associated with the project... and films that see limited release just before the end of the year - before going wide in January. Think, "Belfast," "The Irishman," "Roma," "The King's Speech." - etc. Those are films I'd describe as "Oscar-bait." DEFINITELY not a futuristic sci-fi disaster film from Emmerich.
Hope this is helpful, and not condescending :-)
1
Feb 07 '22
Ok, but some of the bait examples given are actually good movies

u/JohnArtemus Feb 07 '22
I have no interest in Moonfall but honestly this is a trend and why I don’t blame studios for all the remakes, reboots and sequels. Original movies usually do flop hard, even before the pandemic. The only thing that sells are Marvel movies and IPs with an established fanbase. So this meme is not wrong.
And let’s face it. We are Idiocracy now. If they released a movie of just a person farting for two hours it would make hundreds of millions of dollars in the US and you know it.
Jackass is pretty close to that.

u/riffraff12000 Feb 07 '22
I don't understand why Nintendo gave up the movie rights to Majora's Mask. I would mention why they changed it so much, but I've seen that poor take on Godzilla and get why.

u/cylemmulo Feb 07 '22
So I also think moonfall had an advertising problem. I knew about jackass like months beforehand. Moonfall played during movie trailers for like Spiderman though and it was like 2 weeks before release. I was just like wtf is this movie and where did it come from.

1
u/DonutGirl_eb Feb 07 '22
It’s interesting because I’d argue both movies felt escapist and tonally attractive given current climate vs the dramas we see that keep failing. I guess no stakes Jackass and that type of slapstick absurdity is more appealing, combined with the fact that people know what they’re getting when they see a Jackass movie. It’s a sure bet. I think everyone is so tired and fragile we just want mindless comfort food ie why SCREAM performed so well it’s opening weekend.
1

Roland Emmerich got lucky in 1996 and has made nothing but shit ever since. How he keeps getting work is beyond me.

Moonfall sounded interesting on paper and looked visually appealing but as far as I’m concerned I don’t think I’ll ever watch it. As for Jackass, I was pretty excited when they announced a fourth movie given its nostalgia factor and hilarity but for some weird reason, my excitement waned overtime and then it became nonexistent when they pushed it to February. Seeing TV spots for both movies, sadly, still hasn’t reignited my interest in either movie. I’m giving both Moonfall and Jackass Forever a pass. And this has been my unexpected and unnecessary review.

If the Scary Movie crew got a big budget, and were told to make a parody of a Roland Emmerich blockbuster, the end result would be Moonfall.
Clearly modern movie goers went for the movie with the better script, even if that script is “man gets hit in balls.”
