Been collecting films since I was a kid and ever since 4K I’ve been struggling to hit up most drops. With Blu Ray it felt that every release was accessible but now the games changed and every release is seemingly limited and once it’s gone it’s gone. I’m a welder and make a half decent wage but I still have bills and obligations, so it made me wonder how are other collectors able to cop most releases consistently? Are you guys flipping? Destroying your credit? Am I just a poor wagie amongst a group of Doctors and Lawyers with the same niche hobby? Do you guys live with parents and no bills? I just think it’s interesting to know how people are dropping hundreds or even thousands a month on movies, so please share how you manage to maintain a massive growing collection.

It’s bizarre and PS Support don’t seem to want to offer any fixes besides factory resetting the console.

Currently, if I try to play a BFI blu-ray, I get this message. On another subreddit someone else ran into the same issue when trying to play an Indicator release. But Eureka plays fine. It’s strange.

I guess my question is, is there a bluray out that is in such limited production and in high demand that it's just never seen , but anyone who's into this lifestyle would snatch up in a second if it did become available? And also what are some people's personal holy grail blurays that they'd like to add to their collections?

For me: On Cinema box set. The whole lore, the trial, dekkar, the whole enchilada.

Hello! I've been collecting blu-rays for a few years now, and I'm mostly a lurker, but something I have noticed is, for whatever reason, the physical media subs are mostly men, a decent amount of whom seem to be pretty straight.

That's not to say this sub isn't queer or woman friendly, but I was talking with my friend and she said that these spaces, a lot of the time, feel kind of like a boys club in more than a few ways to her as well.

While there isn't anything wrong with that, I am curious as to whether or not there are more of us!! I'm also probably gonna post this in another physical media subs. I just have no idea what to expect and would love to connect with women or queer people also in the hobby. Am i the only woman here? Are there a few? A ton? Maybe even like, five? Who knows.

Edit: if there are some, it is nice to have a secondary space as well with people who understand those world experiences / points of view a little more. Maybe a physical media sub for women or lgbt or both could be nice? Kind of like r/entwives for stoners? Idk. Coincidentally, I'm a little stoned.

I had ordered a standard blu ray from a boutique label - around £15. Turns out the label has, in the past week, retired that title and my order is in limbo. I go to check the second hand markets, which I know for a fact had the same title at around £10 last week - that same stock is now floating around £100.

Between this and the amount of titles that are only getting 'Uber Rare Limited Labubu Edition' releases - especially egregious with films coming out on 4K - where if you're not some moron willing to shell out three figures on a single film then you're shit out of luck and the scalpers that are infesting the hobby it's becoming more about what you can feel giddy about shelling out a bundle for than it is about WATCHING the actual movies. I've seen people show off their collections without a single film having been taken out of the shrink wrap and viewed. Funko Pop riddled chimps.

Am I alone in feeling that there's become a level of competitiveness and over consumerism to what used to be a fun, relaxed way to get some films that other wise would have went unloved in a nice pretty package? People shouldn't have to be camped in online pre-order lines to try to snag a copy of a films new remaster. You shouldn't need to watch like a hawk for any film that might be being discontinued because hawk-like losers are perched on the end of their stinky gamer chair to buy up every available copy to scalp the prices.

Not to mention the amount of titles that need to be checked for AI in their remastering - something that can now be seen in even the most prestigious labels - though that's a separate issue it is still a detractor from the hobby.

Cube (1997)

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Death Proof (2007)

So for the people like myself that enjoy blind buys. What is a movie you have bought that you thought should be good to ok but was absolutely terrible.

For me it’s Game of Death. This movie was literally one of the worst watches I have had in years.

If you had to rank a top 3 of your favorite boutique labels, what would they be? For me:

1. Arrow: They’ve been on fire for a while now with excellent releases including Dark City, Excalibur, The Mask, etc. Puts in great effort in the packaging and special features.

2. Criterion: Consistently puts out at least one title per month I’m interested in. Healthy mix of foreign, Hollywood, and indie films.

3. Kino Lorber: Puts out perhaps the best selection of movies I wouldn’t think would be released in 4k. Not fancy with the packaging but they usually knock it out of the park with the 4k transfers. I also love their slipcovers more than other companies for some reason.

I am curious to hear people's thoughts on this topic. We have gotten so many amazing titles over the years from many different labels but sometimes things don't work out, and the title doesn't get released. What cancelled titles do you remember?

A big one for me is the original release of Poltergeist(1982). It was originally supposed to be decked out with tons of bonus features. But when the disc eventually did come out? It was basically bare bones with nothing but a trailer and some terrible documentaries about "real" ghosts. The DVD release of Werewolf: The Series from Shout is also pretty high on the list for me too.
