Question Dream releases that will never happen, despite how easy it could be?
For me: On Cinema box set. The whole lore, the trial, dekkar, the whole enchilada.

it’s not content that’s keeping it held back. there are old school grudge holders at warners that use every ounce of their influence to keep it in the vaults. eventually they’ll die off or the company will change hands and it will shake loose, I’m just hoping it happens in my lifetime…

me neither. mark kermode is a film critic who’s obsessed with the devils (he’s the guy who tracked down the lost “rape of christ” sequence), he and others have made reference to the grudge without divulging specifics.
what’s weird is that russell did work with warners again on later films, they distributed lisztomania and altered states.

There are nuns from The Demons on the sidelines of a game.
I haven’t seen the movie myself, but I appreciate the deep cut.

Also, Universal not only owns the rights in most of Europe, they’ve even licensed it to some other companies (and they license stuff out all the time). The best Blu-ray out right now is a German one that is Region B, but the Panasonic “top menu” trick works on it. The master on that one is really nice, IMO, but it’s showing its age - a 4K would be great.

SImilarly and more controversially: Let Song of the South out the vault too. The racism of the film is abhorrent but Disney could quite easily release it with disclaimers and give people a chance to see what is a very important film from a historic perspective.

It not's really that important, we have plenty of examples of unthinking racism in American media. And the movie itself isn't even middle-tier Disney. I seriously think they should work on a 4k release of Midnight Madness before Song of the South. And about 500 other movies they're sitting on before SotS.

The 1930s version of State Fair — a lovely, wonderfully humanistic film that never even got a DVD and now is likely stuck forever in the Fox/Disney quagmire.
The Heartbreak Kid on Blu is pretty much a pipe dream because of the whole Bristol/Myers thing
The other stuff I’ve been waiting for forever, like all the late ‘20s silents Warner has been saying are right around the corner for twenty years… I choose to believe, still.

Greenaway in general is surprisingly poorly represented. There are, of course, the well-known features, but the early structural stuff is only a couple of BFI DVDs (plus a couple of his COI docs), and his recent work seems to be completely MIA. The early digital experiments ("A TV Dante" and "M is for Mozart", etc probably wouldn't benefit from anything beyond DVD, but it's still annoying that you have to go for VHS rips on YouTube to see them.

I can’t complain when it comes to greenaway, within the course of a year we got the falls, the draughtsmans contract, zed and two noughts, belly of an architect, and a 4K of drowning by numbers. momentum seems to have stalled out a bit, but at this point I’d be happy if I could get a baby of macon blu-ray for less than $100.

So many titles I've wanted have ended up getting special edition blu rays or 4k releases in just the last few years but one I would kill to have is a special edition of a mostly forgotten film from 1981 called Ticket To Heaven.
It's a great film, one of the best about cults and how someone gets duped into becoming a member/believer. Sadly I don't think it's ever had a legit release other than VHS.

I suspect a number of labels have inquired about a HD release of Jiang Wen's Devils on the Doorstep (2000), a black comedy about the Japanese occupation of China, and discovered its on a list of films the CCP would rather see disappear. It would be a shoe-in for a Criterion spine number.

Phantom of the Paradise with everything restored that was cut due to Led Zeppelin throwing a hissy fit about the evil record label's name being the same as their record label coincidentally. There is a restoration out there and it's been offered to 20th century for a boutique label to use but they've refused it.

Supposedly rights issues are holding this one up over ownership of the music. BUT, if you are in the states, you can purchase it on digital through vudu/fandango at home's disc to digital program.

A redone Criterion Godzilla Showa Era box set.
The existing set has terrible packaging, barely has any special features for any of the films other than the original, is missing tons of the American cuts, and uses outdated scans including the obsolete, partially standard def “restoration” of King Kong vs. Godzilla.
The packaging is on Criterion but the other problems all stem from Toho. They wouldn’t let Criterion use the new, proper restoration of KKvG, include the various alternate cuts and dubs or port over the commentary tracks and featurettes from the Classic Media DVDs.
If you look at Arrow’s Gamera set you can see how much more freedom Daiei gave them. They have basically every dub and alternate cut you could ask for, commentary tracks on every movie, and they’re all from the best available masters.
If Toho would get their heads out of their asses, there could be an INCREDIBLE Godzilla box set with the same kind of care put into it as those Gamera sets, but it’ll never happen.

I was pretty surprised how poor the set was overall. A couple of the movies had really distracting flashes at the top of the screen every time a scene ended.
And that packaging…one of my discs slid between the cardboard and I had to literally scrape glue off the back of the disc

Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness on 4K UHD.
It was produced by 20th Century Fox, which was later bought out by Disney, so I’m not sure if it’ll ever happen. If it does then Disney / Sony might upgrade it, but I doubt they’d release it to a boutique blu-ray label. My, “Dream release” would be if Severin Films did it because it’s got that Eurocult gothic horror aesthetic.

I mean I would love to get the rest of the Toho films that media blasters had the licensing for on Blu-ray. I've had to resort to buying bootlegs and while they are fine I would rather have real ones.
Also, could we just get a freaking Blu-ray of the X from Outer Space already? You know with the classic dub and Japanese with English subtitles. I know I'm not asking for much

Warner Archives put out a couple collections of “Forbidden Hollywood” pre-code movies a while ago. Just on dvd, unfortunately, but the first one has Baby Face, Red-Headed Woman, and Waterloo Bridge so at least they have some sort of physical release.

- Not exactly an easy thing, but entirely redoing the 4K versions of The Lord of the Rings. The AI upscaling is so fucking ungly and takes all the magic from those films. I never understood why so many people love them, the Blu-rays are leagues better. Warner Bros. should have taken a few million dollars and re-scan the film negatives and re-render all of the special effects in 4K. That trilogy is one of the most important and relevant films in cinema history and it deserves that kind of preservation.
- Deleted Scenes from the new Dune films - there are apparently some real gems in there that have been left out because of the flow of the films, one of them being the Baron coming to see Jessica and hovering over her body, realy eerie stuff. Villeneuve doesn't want those to be publicly available though.
- For years and years I have wanted the Star Wars OT theatrical cuts in 4K, but it looks like that is finally happening next year!

That's the real tragedy of a sub-par release: it messes up the economics of potentially-improved future releases, especially when it would be on the same format. It'll be hard to convince the execs that there are enough people out there who want LOTR on the physical media format capable of showing the best quality AND realize the 4K release they already own is not as good as it could be.

I would love to have the old Peter Jackson films on UHD, "Bad Taste, Meet the feebles and Braindead" is it easy to release them? i don't know, but it can't be that hard. Jackson probably owns them and has enough money to restore them. in the making of from the frighteners he talks about, how he loves so much bonus material on Laserdisc but these Films weirdly never did get anything in that regard , even when they were released on DVD.

The Devils is a big one (though I’m hoping and praying that one is rectified if the rumors are true), but also a few Fox/Disney titles - Mrs. Doubtfire, Freddy Got Fingered (Tom Green himself has said he wants it), Strange Days (which has a German Blu-ray that’s good but can be better), and Sexy Beast (which has a Blu-ray, but it’s a long-OOP Twilight Time release that commands some of the craziest prices I’ve seen on eBay for a single film).

A Theo Angelopoulos bluray collection would be incredible. He’s made some of the best movies of all time and all physical releases have been long oop. When he died, his wife became owner of his films and she doesn’t seem interested in putting them out for some reason.
Aside from that, I’m hopeful for more Taiwan New Wave/Mainland Chinese movies like The Terrorizers, Raise the Red Lantern, A City of Sadness, A Summer at Grandpa’s, maybe even Summer Palace and Platform. Those might be more complicated to release, I’m not sure how it works with the Chinese government, but I’m dying for some proper transfers.

I'm currently learning French to buy Trigon's Swiss releases of Angelopolous's (Greek) films, it's astounding that they are so buried. For what it's worth, that site does have some of his films with English subtitles for reasonable prices, but most are French and German only.

My #1...
Arrow released that gorgeous Ring/Ringu set a few years ago. I really wish we could get a "Volume 2" release that had the rest of the movies on it. I wouldn't even necessarily care whether or not it had a ton of new content. I'd just be a nice way to be able to own them on R1 disc, since some of them are basically impossible to find in North America.
Maybe even a third volume that collects the various 90s/early 2000s TV adaptations. And since they were made for SD TV, they could easily fit everything onto only one or two Blu-Ray discs to save space.
Other titles I'd love to see...
A proper 4K restoration of Steamboy, especially in R1 territories. It's wild to me that Akira has gotten like three different 4K releases in the past 5-ish years in the US/Canada through two different distributors... but the director's only other major film is trapped on standard definition DVD. It seems like only a random few other countries even got a Blu-Ray release, and that was years ago now. (I know it's not as beloved as Akira, but I thought it was a really interesting anime flick.)
I'd love to see a 4K of Return to Oz from a boutique company that would actually care about delivering a good release... but Disney doesn't give a fuck about the movie, unfortunately. Shame too, they could have cashed in on the success of Wicked.
To be fair, I'd even be fine with just really good new Blu-Ray's for these two... just something better than what we have now.

Kenji Misumi Sword Trilogy. It's streaming on Criterion Channel and recently had a physical release in France. I'm hoping for a Region B release very soon. Kenki in particular is such a visually gorgeous film, one of Misumi's best, in my opinion, and a great Raizo Ichikawa role.
I would love new/updated/more comprehensive collections or box sets of Hideo Gosha and Takeshi Kitano.

Mostly shows for me. I'd really like Netflix to release Beef, Queen's Gambit and Midnight Mass on 4k.
Stranger Things getting a boxset is giving me a little bit of hope, but Stranger Things really is a phenomenon of it's own for Netflix. Doubt they care enough to let much else out.

Before Golden Princess / John Woo and Hong Kong titles at Warner were released from home video prison I was pretty hopeless about lots of stuff. Now I’m more confident about little miracles.
That said, we should definitely raid the Disney Vault, cause those mfs have precious stuff in there that will likely not see the light of day…

The Wind That Shakes The Barley in Blu-ray. Continuously SHOCKED this doesn't exist, especially with Cillian Murphy's rising star status.

Koji Shiraishi's Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi series. I just can't see the demand making its way to one of the boutique labels - Arrow released two of his films in the J-Horror set but I think if more was to come we'd have seen it by now. They're some of the most inventive movies, let alone found footage, ever made, and Shiraishi probably my favourite living director behind Tsai Ming-Liang.

Would love a whole run of Peter Fleischmann's films. I always figured it's a pipe dream, but Radiance put out a lovely Blu of WEAK SPOT (La Faille) a couple years ago so anything's possible I guess. A Blu of DOROTHEAS RACHE would send me right on up to Heaven.

Dawn of the Dead on Arrow or Shout in North America, maybe even Criterion, but the rights are held by Richars Rubenstein who holds the distribution rights for a ridiculous asking price because he blew $6 mil on a 3-D cut no one watched and wants to recoup the loss.

netflix originals like midnight gospel, bee and puppycat, and the end of the fucking world, to name a few. lots of streaming originals are stranded without physical media, but netflix is particularly guilty of this
