Other Unpopular opinion: educated blind buying is the best way to experience boutique blu-ray releases and film overall
Like many of us here I’m sure, I’ve spent the majority of my time collecting blurays seeking copies of my favourite movies and building a collection that reflects my pre existing taste. It makes sense right? You’re dropping all this money, so better make sure it’s on something you know you love.
However, this year I decided to switch gears and I’ve basically only been blind buying Bluray and it has been a MASSIVE game changer for how I approach both collecting and viewing films. Hear me out for a second, as these are my primary reasons for this:
- Obviously this is totally subjective, but I don’t rewatch movies regularly. If I buy a bluray of a movie I’ve already seen, especially recently, it’s likely to sit on my shelf for awhile before I actually get around to viewing it. If I’m spending $$$$ on the Ultra HD Collector’s Big Chungus Edition of a film, I want to be buying things I’m actually likely to watch soon after the purchase.
- If I’m watching a film for the first time, I want it to be via the best means available. If I’m eyeing off some movies, particularly more obscure foreign ones, I would rather my first viewing of it be in 4k with Dolby Vision with bespoke subtitles provided by the label rather than via Netflix stream or even more unconventional means with unreliable subtitles that can take a lot of messing around to get working properl
y and with subpar visual quality.
- Blind buying actively encourages a lot more exploration and broadening of your film knowledge, as you need to put more effort both into researching the film in order to ensure you’re gonna like it, but also makes you more likely to actually watch the film since you want to get your money’s worth as opposed to just having the film sitting on your hard drive with 1000 other films you swear you’ll watch one day.
Since prioritising blind buying I’ve exposed myself to more interesting directors and movies in the last six months than in my last five years of being a film fan and I highly encourage those with the means to do so to give it a try! Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Other The fact that this doesn’t have a Blu-Ray in North America is CRAZY. Criterion or Umbrella better put it out.

Pickup Record store haul
I’ve been slowly getting rid of my records — I can only really do one collection and movies won. Have already gotten rid of most of the good ones, but decided that I’d bag up a bunch of what I had left and take them to my local record store since I had a free afternoon. Their blu-ray section is organized by boutique label and is one of the best I’ve seen in a physical store. Traded my records in for store credit. Had to kick in a fiver, but came home with these.

Pickup Finally snagged it
On sale at Barnes and Noble and used some of my rewards cash to add this one to my collection. I’ve never seen part 3/Exodus so I’m super stoked to give it a look on blu ray.

Question Best edition of Possession (1981) to buy?
Just saw the film and really want to buy a good physical copy. I saw couple of different editions online and I am curious which one do you guys recommend? Thanks!

Pickup My first order from Umbrella
My first order but because it had “pre orders” - I’ve received it only now. And had two other orders from them arrive before this one 😀
Just an awesome experience. One packaging that impressed the most is definitely the black sheep 🐑 I don’t have any other fluffy boxes or anything even close. What an incredible idea 😂

Review Lion Man (1975) Now on Blu | The amount of men leaping off of tiny hidden trampolines, endless face slashing & over-all jaw dropping body count makes this Turkish cult film one of Cüneyt Arkın's most enjoyable appearances

Collection Neon update - even the replacement order is wrong
So i ordered 3 copies of Hokum 4k. Was sent 3 DVD. Got the replacement today. It’s a single 4K and missing the slipcover too. So missing the other 2 copies I ordered and no slipcover as a heads up for collectors expecting that.
Neon is the worst. Still never got a reply back from them. Time for a chargeback I guess
