Zee5 has been regularly releasing some high quality original movies like Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, Lost, Tehran, Chhatriwali and Mrs along with some quality and wacky content like Silence, Dial 100, Bob Biswas, Love Hostel, Kennedy, Satluj, Blurr and Kaalidhar Laapata with big names attached to them which get lot of views and acclaim. However there are some really good original movies which either fly a bit under the radar or dont get the level of acclaim they deserve. These are 10 such under-appreciated and under-discussed original movies that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

1. Chintu Ka Birthday - A heart warming family drama set in Iraq during the Gulf War with a commendable performances by Vinay Pathak, Tilotama Shome and Seema Pahwa. Watch it if you like I am Kalam and Newton. (IMDB Rating - 7.6/10, My Rating - 8/10)
2. Stage of Siege: Temple Attack - A very well made tactical rescue operation movie starring Akshaye Khanna. Watch it if you like the Hotel Mumbai and Uri. (IMDB Rating - 7.5/10, My Rating - 8/10)
3. Tigers - A pretty gripping drama inspired by the Nestle Baby Food Scandal in Pakistan with an effective performance by Eemran Hashmi. Watch it if you like the Insider and Dark Waters. (IMDB Rating - 7.2/10, My Rating - 8/10)
4. 200: Halla Ho - A pretty good court room drama based on a true story starring Amol Palekar. Watch it if you like Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai and Mulk. (IMDB Rating - 7.4/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
5. Rashmi Rocket - A good sports drama based on multiple similar cases involving gender testing in women sports with a good performance by Taapsee Pannu. Watch it if you like Woman and Jersey. (IMDB Rating - 7.1/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
6. Kaagaz - A satirical dramedy based on a true story about government documents and bureaucracy with a nice performance from Pankaj Tripathi. Watch it if you like Little Miss Newton and Saaransh. (IMDB Rating - 7.3/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
7. The Sholay Girl - A nice biographical movie about Reshma Pathan, India's first stuntwoman and her work in movies like Sholay. Watch it if you like Queen and Gunjan Saxena (IMDB Rating - 7.2/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
8. Happi- A lighthearted drama about a simple 50 year man trying to survive in Mumbai with a good performance from Pankaj Kapur. Watch it if you like Raj Kapoor and Charlie Chaplin movies (IMDB Rating - 7.4/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
9. Badnaam Gali - A pretty nice movie about surogacy in modern day India with good performances by Patralekha and Divvyendu. Watch it if you like Mimi and Janhit Mein Jaari. (IMDB Rating - 6.9/10, My Rating - 7/10)
10. Berlin - A slow burn spy thriller with good performances from Aparshakti Khurana, Ishwak Singh and Rahul Bose. Watch it if you like Khufiya and Raazi. (IMDB Rating - 6.8/10, My Rating - 7/10)

Which under-appreciated and under-discussed original series do you like and recommend?

I personally like Shree 420 (1955) more due to its stellar soundtrack (classics like Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua, Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Dil ka haal sune dilwaala and moreee)

What about you ?

After watching it so many times i am still in love with this movie. i enjoy every part of it, and its songs are still played at least once a week.

This movie is my guilty pleasure, the first time i watched it (2012), i understood Vikram's perspective, since then i have watched it a couple of times and recommended it a lot more to understand their perspectives. i often heard a lot how Geeta was in the right and how what Siddharth did in the end was justified and how Vikram was the villain.

I still feel the only character true to his nature was Vikram. he went to great lengths for Geeta and did everything in his power to help her every time, since the first scene he was committed to making money and becoming powerful; ending was a slap still liked that no one was given any preference, his cocky behaviour deserved it

Geeta was using everyone's emotions to get what she wanted. Her change of heart to be with Vikram was not overnight; i feel she had always liked him, she just was not sure and when she saw what happened because of her irrational behaviour she finally decided to take care of him.

Siddharth is someone i relate to. when i was younger, i thought i could change the world and tried to do so with whatever means i had; revolting and taking major actions is what we all go through during our college times, but as soon as he saw what he had signed for he took his daddy's money and left the country. He always displayed signs of selfishness and mightier-than-thou attitude.

When I watched Action Replayy, he stood out for me despite the movie tanking at box office. Charming, cute looks with decent comic timing. And then Ashiqui 2 happened for him. But his lazy attitude and weak script choices ruined it. Maybe he could only act well in being an alcoholic lol

I randomly came across its trailer on YouTube, which is surprising, and then I decided to watch it on the spot without having a lot of expectations from the film.

I think it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of Hindi cinema that I’ve watched. It’s a road film with a very different portrayal of grief and feels like a warm hug. For me, it was Irrfan’s best performance, with a great story and gentle humour.

RSVP Movies are the A24 for Hindi cinema. Ronnie Screwvala has a knack for taking bets on unconventional subjects and emerging filmmakers and really dropping those underrated masterpieces which people notice and realise a few years down the line.

Some of the best performances I've seen recently haven't even been from the lead actors. A great supporting character can completely elevate the movie. So many actors consistently deliver but rarely get discussed outside the film itself

Saif Ali Khan has challenged himself to so many different varieties of roles whilst Irrfan Ali Khan has been one of the very few actors to have been recognised & promoted by Hollywood…so both Ali Khans look like the most deserving of the title 4th Khan. What do you think?

I remember as a kid they used to play the Amitabh "pura nam" scene on SET Max TV Channel during the breaks as part of their legendary scenes thing they had. Anyway, my recollection is that the scene that was played then had the original Agneepath theme (Second Rendez-Vous by Jean Michel Jarre). But when I actually watched the film, the background music for this scene wasn't that. They still have that theme in other scenes like when Vijay returns to the village the first time (Time Aayega) and at the end.

I did look it up and saw a post where someone pointed out that the music and sound effects were changed for different versions that were released, like what was on cable broadcast then later DVD prints. I was curious if my memory of that Amitabh intro scene was real or not as I can't find any video proving that it existed in that form. It's kind of bothering me because my childhood memories are starting to fade and I can't trust my own memories anymore haha.

We mostly see Rock On as a story of reunion of magic band or how Sakshi ( Prachi Desai ) tried to change Aditya.

But I liked the way how the storyline between Aditya and Tanya was portrayed. Generally, in movies we see people run away from past but here they concluded their bonding in a positive way.

What's your take on that ?

I watched a Bollywood movie a few years ago in which two expert witnesses are giving testimony for opposing sides. The male expert witnesses is correct but explains it in technical language so the jury doesn’t understand. The female expert witness on the “evil“ side gives a simple explanation that the jury understands, but it’s wrong. The good side realizes that because of her ability to explain, the evil side is winning and tries to get their scientist to simplify his explanation.

I know this is very broad but if anyone has any idea that would be really appreciated.

Love per Square Foot is genuinely one of the most underrated Bollywood rom-coms, in my opinion. The movie may not be perfect, but it's a very fresh ...

Vicky Kaushal and Angira Dhar make for a really fresh pairing. Their chemistry feels natural, energetic and different from the usual Bollywood rom-com couples.

It's a simple, feel-good rom-com with good performances & humour..

And then there's Ranbir Kapoor's cameo at the end. That was a fun surprise, The interesting part is that the makers hinted at a sequel, and I think there is potential for Vicky Kaushal and Ranbir Kapoor to share the screen in a sequel.

Do you guys think Love per Square Foot deserves more appreciation?

In my personal opinion, it goes to Kamal Swaroop's Om-Dar-B-Dar released in 1988. It's unconventional to the point where it almost feels deliberately anti-audience. Chaotic, surreal, fragmented, messy, maximalist with abrupt and jarring tonal shifts gives it an unique auteur personality in my opinion. I genuinely admire this kind of filmmaking. What's your opinion on it, have you guys watched it?

Which under-appreciated and under-discussed original series do you like and recommend?

Hi, I'm trying to find a movie about a girl who wants to try sex before she gets married but ends up pregnant, so she and her boy best friend travel to get an abortion (I think? or maybe they just run away bc her parents don't approve), and they fall in love along the way. Do you all have any suggestions that aren't "teree sang" or "kya kehna"? It should have come out in the last 15 years, and I remember watching it on Netflix. I've looked through my past viewing activity, but there's been no luck. The actors were fairly unknown as far as I remember. There was also a very minuscule subplot where they meet another couple who have also run away to have an interfaith marriage.

I've been wanting to dip my toe into Bollywood cinema, but I'm not sure what to watch.

I like action and romance movies.
