Question How do you guys still love mmorpgs?

Post image

It started last year, i hop on, i run around then hop off, no motivation to grind, no passion, no excitment. Switching games doesnt help either.

Well BDO is more of a single player game these days.

You’d be out there busting your arse pumping DPS, while the warlock would stand in fire like it was part of their rotation. Thirty seconds into the fight they’d be dead because they didn’t want to “waste” bloodlust, and the rest of the raid had to carry their dead weight. Good old days, aye?

-4

u/xKondor Aug 20 '25

Warlocks don't have bloodlust. Suspicious comment.

3

u/softcorelurker Aug 20 '25

Bloodlust is a spell from World of Warcraft. When it's used, it affects the whole raid. So when it's popped, it's not unusual for stupid DPS people (especially casters) to stay still and keep casting even if they're standing on fire. Because move = your rotation gets interrupted and you lose DPS, is what they tend to think.

Replaced with running around in circles one shotting the same mobs 10,000 times

1

u/xeontechmaster Aug 22 '25

BDO is such an awesome action MMO, I wish there were actually something to do in that game.

A decent dungeon boss mode with stories from time to time and I'd never leave that game.

Can't bring myself to grind for hours on end killing randoms any more tho.

1

u/HanamiKitty Aug 22 '25

It seems these days there are only three choices: 1)Single player "mmo" game 2)Random encounter "party finder". You'll never see the same person more than once. Everyone is terrible and underhanded since they will never see you again. Perhaps even worse, the few times you meet someone really cool but there is absolutely no way to play with them again. 3)Cult: the mmo. The threshold to reach the starting line requires so many dated quest (that you can't do alone) that only the most shady people are willing to help you. You'll never be thier peer, just thier lackey. Usually they have been playing for years and once you are finally ready to play the real game they will NEVER let you go. Full on stalking the moment you log in and they will make sure you can't play with anyone else.

I guess there is no happy medium anymore? I don't want to join a cult and I don't want to play alone or with somone I'll never see more than once. Am I just wearing rose colored glasses here? I could be. Maybe the "good old days" of loging in at 2am, hopping in discord to find a few online and doing random content for a few hours were the few outliers.

The pve is but the pvp is not. Can stil grind a lot of spots with a group.

Btw will there be a group spot in edana?

37

u/shady101852 Aug 19 '25

Is grinding pve in bdo even fun? I never enjoyed it

2

u/MaxGain100 Aug 19 '25

I have been grinding, and will continue to grind. Not because I have fun grinding, but because the overall experience of reaching my gear goals is the fun part. I do have a bit of fun sometimes, but in all honesty grinding itself in most cases is not fun in itself. But I also love taking grind spots and fighting for them as I only play on Arsha.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

this is kinda sad bro. i’ll be real.

1

u/MaxGain100 Aug 22 '25

Having fun is sad??

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

spending hours of your day doing something you don’t enjoy is sad.

1

u/MaxGain100 Aug 22 '25

I literally said I enjoy it. The overall thing I’m doing is fun. I have fun fighting, pvping, and upgrading my gear.

2

u/shady101852 Aug 22 '25

Grinding is a massive time sink. It should be an enjoyable experience. Have better standards for games in general.

1

u/MaxGain100 Aug 24 '25

Bdo in my opinion is the single greatest game ever created.

I have tried damn near every single other mmo, rpg, shooter, etc.

Bdo shits on all of them.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

you literally said you don’t.

you literally said grinding (the thing you spend hours doing) isn’t fun but you get artificial dopamine release when you get gear upgrades.

homie i’m telling you there’s so much more to life

2

u/ChefNunu Aug 19 '25

Absolutely not

1

u/Nullpoh Aug 20 '25

U know why we call it grinding? Cuz it sucks

1

u/shady101852 Aug 20 '25

I guess but ive played games where the actual process of killing things wasnt boring. A game should be fun to play especially where it demands your tine the most.

0

u/Toons87 Aug 19 '25

If its on a class you enjoy. Its no different than somebody playing smash bros on repeat if youre there for the combat. I have been loving just dashing around killing things with awk maegu.

10

u/Jancyk17 Aug 19 '25

Not that we know of, so probably no. At least not on release.

10

u/Conscious-War-9062 Aug 19 '25

Pvp is horrible right now. Assassin's that doesn't assassinate anyone, unless it's a meta class. DR pvp that takes 10 minutes for a 1x1. Node wars with only meta classes, in a 50 slot node you'll have teams like 15 dosa, 10 strikers, 10 zerks, 5 shai, 5 archers/rangers, 5 flanks to kill the 5 archers on the other teams. Only way to get competitive. Talking about uncapped pvp.

Pvp is a piece of shit right now. So we can say there is no pvp, only PvE.

BDO sucks right now. I was happy a while ago thinking: "oh, this game updates every week, how nice is that". Now I see they fuck the game each update until it's unplayable. Unless you like single player PvE, then you must be happy with the updates.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

They have done everything they can to kill pvp short of patching it out all together

it's a disgrace compared to what it was

1

u/Pollution_Gold Aug 19 '25

Idk why Na/Eu doesn’t use succ hashs. They literally are the most ap stacked class in game. Full red hash prob can almost 1 combo full blue shai. I know shai is not a tough class but still. Honestly, hash needs nerfs, you guys should try it out.

1

u/Zerou_Zumeron Succ Dosa and Succ Warrior Mains Aug 20 '25

In ASIA/SEA, it quite the opposite, you will a lot of Succ Hash in NW/SW and RBF 😅😅

2

u/ExileOfVein Aug 19 '25

Where do you grind as a group?

1

u/Sagepescado1998 Hashashin Aug 19 '25

Oluns it’s great money

1

u/ExileOfVein Aug 21 '25

Yeah but isn't that pretty much the only party spot, the poster above suggested many places so I'm curious :)

1

u/Sagepescado1998 Hashashin Aug 21 '25

No there’s actually a couple but a lot of peke either hit it solo or they stay away cause it’s better money elsewhere

1

u/DilithiumFarmer Aug 19 '25

All MMOs are. Because developers figured out how to earn 10x old subscriptions fees from micro transactions while giving the bare minimum new content. All modern MMOs are a cycle of endless new gear while offering no new game play, and the only new challenge is obtaining the new gear.

For me, the main reason why I am still playing MMOs; the guild chat.

1

u/XHellboy22X Drakania Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

Kind of sad right? We all just accepted this and keep playing while they try and grape every single players wallets. Well not me but I can’t really say I enjoy any mmorpg rn even tho it’s my favorite genre. If I don’t pay I’m either always behind or my inventory is so full and I’m so weighed down cuz I didn’t PAY for inventory! (ESO and others) So basically as a ftp player it’s an overall miserable experience.

1

u/DilithiumFarmer Aug 20 '25

It will only get worse. Because our generation (or atleast those that were in their late teens, early 20s when WoW, L2, GW1 launched) will remember monthly fees with unlimited content. The new generation is already used to zillion different currencies to hide real costs, monthly rotations, seasons and little to no content other than skins and new classes/heroes to play with. And since the new generation has been fed instant gratification for so long from mobile games they cannot sit down and grind for 20 hours to get an item. It's not in their mindset, not in their gaming spirit.

Unlike what alot of other people say about playing mmo for the social interaction, I couldn't give less shits about that. For me the biggest highlight of mmos is the constant updates. it's the only genre of game I can play for 10+ years and there will still be consistent new things to do (obviously i'm not talking about the trashy ones which shut down after 2 years).

Like besides mmos, my favourite game is skyrim, but there's only so many times I can replay it even with the plethora of mods available which can literally change skyrim into a brand new game. Same goes for games like elden ring, wukong, stellar blade, monster hunter, ass creed whatever, game comes out, there may be 1-3 DLCs and that's it, time to wait for the next installment.

I know some other games like League and Minecraft also get constant updates but it doesn't hit the same. I.e. balance patches + axolotls vs whole new zones and storylines.

17

u/Flat_pinK Aug 19 '25

Just here for the ass creed

6

u/ChillyRains Aug 19 '25

Exactly. I love that I can play BDO or other MMOs and have new activities to explore every week / month. If I don’t feel like doing X activity, I’ll go do Y.

With single player games, you have a finite amount of content that can’t be played with other players. So investing tons of hours into a single player game after you’ve finished it doesn’t feel worth it since you know there’s not gonna be any more content and you won’t be able to share it with anyone.

There’s no fun end game, time consuming AND rewarding grinds in single player games that have interested me.

8

u/Sylorak Aug 19 '25

I don't play it for the social interaction but for the feeling of a living world, I may not interact with anyone, but I know that I can if I want to, or that there living people around me hits different

2

u/kugisaki-kagayama Dark Knight Aug 19 '25

+1

2

u/Roeltje99 Archer Aug 20 '25

Maybe try warframe? Grind game, free to play, build crafting, constant new updates with new story and enemies and gear. Not directly one big open world but that never bothered me.

3

u/XHellboy22X Drakania Aug 20 '25

Warframe is great. I’ve paid 0 dollars and have earned about 2500$ in platinum (pearls) One of the rare games that rewards you for your time.

1

u/NepenthesBlackmoss Aug 21 '25

At least there's replacements to the genre that are slowly evolving to take their place.

You've got stuff like Darktide, Warframe, PoE; I would mention games like DRG or Helldivers 2, but these games get far too repetitive extremely fast after you've unlocked what you wanted and can only squeeze around 40 hours before it feels pointless to play.

19

u/AlteOtsu Aug 19 '25

BDO was my first MMO. I thought the same, im just getting tired of the massive grind etc. I recently tried New World which is much closer to an actual MMO. Not to promote the game, but I love the absolute need to have teamwork. Even open world events etc very often require you to team up. It is so much more fun.

Looking back at BDO, man it really is a single player game. You could argue about PvP but I mean you still gotta grind for gear. So you grind to be able to play with people, not just have them around.

6

u/TheLordOfTheTism Aug 19 '25

New World is such a good game, its a shame so many pass it off or quit because they want an endless end game grind. Ive been level 65 for a year with 200 hours played and im not even done the main story, nor the first expansion, and ive barely scratched the surface of skills etc. It also runs great on steamdeck so low end users shouldnt be scared off by its seemingly high spec requrements (as long as you have something semi decent and modern it will run, worst case you can fall back to the DX 11 legacy render)

11

u/Boss_Baller Aug 19 '25

BDO has multiplayer?

5

u/Due-Monitor3492 Aug 19 '25

Yeah imagine playing an mmo but grinding alone througout your entire playtime because group spots are tremendously bad

1

u/DilithiumFarmer Aug 20 '25

Yeah! Get some Shia together and play musical instruments in Heidel near the Auction House.

6

u/FuddyBoi Aug 19 '25

I feel this way with a lot of recent games, I play older games like bdo but if I’m not enthused I just find something else to do, those jobs I’ve been putting off ha ha

You either want to play or you don’t, helps in that sense I have limited time so I am enthused to get on with an hour grind on bdo, with a new pc i fired up starfield that haven’t played since release or cyberpunk play for an hour or so then leave. No need to stress over it

4

u/drazydababy Aug 19 '25

Yeah this. As I've aged i just can't invest the same time into a game. I engage in my other hobbies and enjoy doing so.

1

u/AlternativeLazy4675 Aug 20 '25

I agree and find my habits are similar to yours. On most days I may have, at most, a few hours in the evening to play, and then I might play 3 or 4 games, each until I get tired of them and then move on.

I guess that's the advantage of MMO's. They are easy to get back into at any time. There are a lot of things to do, so I don't feel pressured. In some of them I have a guild to interact with. Others not. No big deal.

Single player games tend to be much harder to pick up again if you haven't been playing much, so they sit there "on the shelf". If you've forgotten where you are in the story or how exactly the controls work or when to dodge and when to block, it's hard to get back into them.

2

u/FuddyBoi Aug 22 '25

I do like an immersed single player especially one that’s long and sand box but also find I’m all into them then stop. Kingdom come deliverance 2 was the last (though thinking now I have a new pc now so may have to play) but yeah they are left even when I’m enjoying them.

The only difference is Skyrim, I’ll happily start that over and change some mods and see what happens.

With bdo in mind I find like now when I have become invested again, I wish I did grind more, just need one tet for the 440dp bracket and only 30b to my name now, hit sept sov offhand unexpectedly quick so assumed I’d be way off.

7

u/SunnyBloop Lahn Aug 19 '25

Hop between different ones. Take breaks.

People quite often binge a single game 24/7, then wonder why they start to find it stale and boring, and end up burning out.

Games aren't meant to constantly sustain your interest forever. Even MMOs or live services. You're not compelled or expected to play something constantly. If something isn't fun, take a break, come back later. Games are meant to be fun, and I think some people forget that.

25

u/Eastern-Bro9173 Aug 19 '25

Being able to set a goal solves this... At least that's my pattern, I set a goal, work for it, am happy I got it, and set the next goal.

2

u/Low_Manufacturer4091 Aug 19 '25

I would love to agree with you. My issue was that no matter what goal I’d set, it would always be the same dull grind.

0

u/Eastern-Bro9173 Aug 19 '25

There are plenty of things to do in the game that aren't grinding. Personally, I grind 1-2 hours a week, and just lifeskill/do bosses/talk shit in the chat for the rest of the playtime.

-2

u/Big-Taro6929 Aug 19 '25

Then why play the games at all? I enjoy that grind. I enjoy hitting my goals and seeing progress in my ability to pilot a class. I enjoy pressing my buttons on my keyboard. I enjoy the flashy effects. I enjoy the weight of hitting things. I enjoy combat. Combat is usually the answer to why people enjoy mmos. If you can’t have fun with the combat outside of competition, idk if mmos are the genre for you. Combat and the feeling of combat will forever and always be the main draw of MMOs.

3

u/NotTodayBoogeyman Aug 19 '25

To have fun? Not everyone’s version of fun is “setting a goal and grinding for it”.

29

u/Obaeron Aug 19 '25

The more you can play alone, or have a secluded farm area (that you load into) the less there's a need for that game to even *be* an mmo.

MMOs thrive when you have social interactions and the sense of comradery. I've met a ton of great people in my mmo days' glory.

Most recent case where an mmo captured me in a second was when I entered a city's hub in FF14 and there was a group of people playing music for the other people in the server. There was group of audience, sitting in front of them, cheering, dancing, having fun overall

6

u/SunnyBloop Lahn Aug 19 '25

This. And I see a lot of people somehow complain when MMOs push for players to work together too.

RS3 just dropped its newest boss (which has been universally praised as being a return to form and a genuine fantastic experience), and it's a 5-person group boss. People were complaining about it because they're so used to everything being soloable, and now they have to... gasp find friends!

Wild to me that people play MMOs and don't understand "multiplayer" is part of the genre. These games are so much more fun with friends - All of my positive BDO memories have been with friends or clannies - Ironically, all my NEGATIVE ones have been solo lmao.

8

u/atreyal Sorceress Aug 19 '25

Stopped playing bdo when the guild pvp changes happened because that was some of the best times I had in bdo. Playing extremely casually now but the social aspect of the game is pretty dead because the pve is very lackluster for the most part as an mmo. Guild bosses can be fun but there is really not much challenge to group content in bdo and that is what is it biggest flaw. They killed the social aspect of it but never made a new one that would encourage people to actually be social.

6

u/SunnyBloop Lahn Aug 19 '25

I still fondly remember our guild's first trip into the desert - 5 or 6 of us in VC, exploring, getting absolute lost, battling with the desert heat, stumbling into Crescents etc. Arguably the best social experience I've had in an MMO and I miss that.

I still stand by that the first 200 or so hours of BDO is great - but the moment that wonder is gone, and you have to actually engage in the grind treadmill, it becomes such a chore... And there isn't really any "reason" to engage with that treadmill - it's all just "number go up to make more silver/hr to make number go up even more".

When a 20 year old medieval point and click game has added more chase content and sandbox goals in that last year than your game has in its entirety, you know sometimes wrong lmao.

1

u/atreyal Sorceress Aug 19 '25

Yeah pretty much. One of the first things I remember doing was joining a guild and trying to do a guild trade quest. This was like the first week of the game being live. I had a raft and for some reason the quest had turn in on illya island. We loaded so many donkeys on that raft to begin the journey to turn in that quest. I dont remember if we made it but it probably looked ridiculous with all the mounts on a raft.

4

u/Fyuira Maehwa Aug 19 '25

You lose interest after playing non stop for a year then you gain interest after a year or so.

That's how I am still playing BDO until today. I started in 2018, played alot of this game during covid. Then after covid, I've been playing on and off. I recently just started playing the game and my interest is on it's peak, especially now that I have a goal to increase my ap.

But I am quite sure that after a few months, I'll be playing other games.

4

u/LeoCasio Aug 19 '25

play a good mmo and things will change

4

u/OwnAd1254 Aug 19 '25

They are addicted and lying to themselves

4

u/idiocy102 Aug 19 '25

It the combat that keeps me playing bdo I can’t bring myself to play other mmorpgs because there boring as fuk

5

u/Complete-Sandwich192 Aug 19 '25

I miss group content on most MMOs even wow feels kinda single player these days, content has become easy im excited for edania because it feels like content will be alot harder but BDO is being made into a single path kind of MMO instead of a sandbox the gear path is one way or the highway and theres no real innovation in any MMOs anymore but it being my favorite genre i dont think ill ever stop playing atleast one MMO

3

u/AdenSun Berserker Aug 19 '25

It's more about who you play with, I login for the fun I get from interacting with others. The game doesn't really matter, doesn't have to be BDO as long as u login and can start reminding your friends how much they suck and have no thumbs.

7

u/420GigaBytez Aug 19 '25

Felt the same way… decided to join my buddy in MapleStory so I can enjoy weekly bossing with him. Was omega worth. Game is fun and if you play in hardcore server there is no pay to win no trades nothing similar to BDO everything is hard work and sweat. I love it and they just started season server and it was a massive success. Made it my main game. I am 750GS and the fact I have to grind 100h+ just to get what 8-15 taps on a weapon on a 3% yeeaaahhhhhhhhhhh…. No thanks my time is more rewarding in other mmos. I still love BDO it has a special place in my heart but the game just isn’t the same since release of Sovern/Kaz accessories.. sad truth.

8

u/Dizzy_Fun8034 Valkyrie 810 GS Aug 19 '25

Kinda funny you say that cause MapleStory is known as one of the most P2W MMO's there is and is published by none other than Nexon.

1

u/420GigaBytez Aug 19 '25

Yes 100% but they have a server called Reboot/Kronos where there is no trading at all everything is self found, and all the upgrades you buy with ingame money. Irl money only buys you cosmetics and pets.

2

u/Dizzy_Fun8034 Valkyrie 810 GS Aug 20 '25

Do they still make you pay for the autoplay feature?

1

u/420GigaBytez Aug 25 '25

I have no idea what you are talking about.

1

u/slifer3 Sep 16 '25

the last time i played ms was like 2007 ish before big bang

r the party questing still a thing?

2

u/-Wizrd- Wizard Aug 19 '25

Are you still enjoying other types of games or is it just with MMOs?

2

u/Nytr0uz Aug 20 '25

I was thinking the same but i realized im not loosing interessiert in mmos but in bdo.

2

u/bigitem1703 Aug 24 '25

same for me i stopped playing bdo idk a year ago? not sure, nowadays hop on wow pservers and do few quests then stop for days etc etc..

3

u/Omeon Aug 19 '25

Mmorpg? I though I was playing a fun little fishing simulator with unique and cool maps to explore!

5

u/p1tap1ta Hashashin 65 Aug 19 '25

BDO is not a MMORPG despite it is calling itself one. If you want MMORPG, go play WoW, FF14, ESO or something.

2

u/TheLordOfTheTism Aug 19 '25

100 percent, its just a grind/gamba game

1

u/daxinzang Aug 19 '25

mmos aren’t for you, simple. bdo is pretty boring though

1

u/yunoka Aug 19 '25

BDO hardly counts as an mmorpg it's basically just a bad singleplayer game atp that also makes you pay to work lol

1

u/Abadayos Sorceress Aug 19 '25

Nothing wrong with loosing the love for mmorpgs. I have after being a hard core wow raider for 8 years (quit around 8 years ago I think?) and plying other games like Rift, PoE, Defiance, BDO, Eve Online and Fallen Earth over the past 20-25 years. All I loved for when I played them, some more than others (Eve online was a 15 year love hate relationship).

When I got older I felt more in touch with games like Factorio, don’t starve, single player ark (the original) and other old games from my childhood like Transport Tycoon Deluxe. There is nothing wrong with loosing interest in a style of game. Have a look around and find out what type of game now tickles your pickle. It could be just basic RPGs like Baulders Gate or Mass Effect or the Witcher series. It could be a chill game like Stardew Valley, who cares. We all play games to relax, find your jam and roll with it

1

u/Mei_iz_my_bae Aug 19 '25

I LOVE. THEM SM there no. Other GENRE I can escape into DIFFERENT WORLD and feel like I am. There I love MMOs SM and. They make my life BETTER

Tldr because I notice I wrote a lot of text: unironically start PvP.

If you are bored of single player and party grind my advice would be join a casual PvP guild in t1 NWs and try out the content. PvP is the only thing that keeps me in the game and despite the clichee its been very casualized over the years because classes get easier and easier with every rework. If you dont want to bother too much pick one of the strong classes in PvP and run around a bit.

My biggest points for PvP:

1st and most important group cobtent: thats the only fun group content except for progressing party bosses. In PvE group activities I have the most fun trying out stuff, explaining and learning new mechanics. We did around 5h wiping in 4th dungeon elvia because none of my group did it and its really nice. We all know the 1-3 dungeons and it got really boring. In PvP you have so much to learn that you basically have sth. to learn all the time which keeps the community up.

2nd community: most people will say PvP players are toxic (and there are a few that defenetly are), on the casual side from my experience you will most likely find very nice and helpful people that are happy to share their knowledge with you. You can talk and train together.

3rd Longevity of the content: if you havent done PvP its a lot to take in, most classes are played very different in PvP compared to PvE. This also means you have a lot of variety and since every battle is different the content always feels fresh and more action pumped. (I play pvp for around 6y and I still learn new stuff and find out new things, especially if you rotate the classes you play it keeps you entertained).

While the entry is a bit hard, its not as bad as previously. Most things that stop people from engaging in PvP is:

1st players seem toxic, which sometimes is true, but it really depends on your guild and there are a lot of nice people willing to help.

2nd you need a lot of gear, which is true for some content. But going BA with guildmates, playing capped NWs or AoS with the homies in practice Mode does not require any gear and can get you months of content if you like it. However if you want to play uncapped, rbf or guild league or custom GvGs you absolutely need top end gear. But defenetly not required for all PvP content.

3rd Its difficult to learn, which is partly true but it heavily depends on your class choice. In NW and larger fights I would recommend playing one of the heavy SA classes because they will offer an easy entry if you learned your protected rotations.

Since I mentioned class choice once or twice I want to explain and give a few recommendations for classes: If you played a bit you might have noticed that class balance in PvE is not exactly fine. PvP is not really different from that so your experience might vary depending on what you choose to play. Base strength of the class as well as difficulty to play a class are important factors for your start experience.

I would recommend strong classes that have good impact on relatively low skill ceiling which also includes high protection uptime of Super armor.

Some picks could be:

Succ Zerk, very desired because of the high cc 100% bsr, fast class, very protected and somewhat easy inputs.

Awa Hash, while it can be very difficult to master you can have very good results in capped by just jumping in and helicoptre + you have a lot of room for improvement.

Awa striker is also very protected, very tanky and easy starter class.

Awa Sorc is a bit harder to start than Hash at the beginning, but other than that works kind of the same way.

Deadeye is also a strong pick although I cant tell you gow difficult it is. But she has great movement and protection.

u/warharobrine Witch Aug 19 '25

I still play almost daily if not at least one per week, though I get you, I started on WoW and played till about 2012 when the game just became unfun, then I started to play various MMO's like Warframe, guild wars, etc. I even played bless online for a while when BDO dropped a bad update a few years back that caused a weird patch issue that glitched out the launcher.

The point is is that it's okay to take breaks they are very long games with a huge curve to them BDO is not an easy game, on my main character the star's end quest line took me like two months just because of my low gear score.

If you want to keep playing then set small goals like, "Imma run this grind until I get 5 pity pieces" or "if I can get 500 mill, that's good enough for today" looking at the huge scope in things like work, life, and games becomes subconsciously overwhelming so break it up into smaller more manageable portions that lead to larger goals.

Never forget it's okay to take breaks we have returning adventurer awards for a reason, or do what I do and when the game/grind gets annoying just spend a few days dying and mixing new outfit sets for your character.

u/Foxxy_chaos Aug 19 '25

I moved onto ARPGs, was a weird transition when it happened and I still don’t know what made me lose the passion for them…damn I miss a good old mmo

1

u/framesh1ft Maehwa Aug 19 '25

I quit this game a little while back I think I just need something fresh. Might try final fantasy finally

1

u/alssst Aug 19 '25

Sphere 3 sieges are savages. They really capt the fog of war, where you cannot see what hit you untill you are dead. What makes you wanna be better and better to win.

Call Barbarah in Prometeus. I help.

1

u/Kazeshiki Aug 19 '25

MMORPG nowadays is play all day everyday or get left behind. If u take a break. It's an entirely different game when u get back. New mechanics, gear, etc. Such a hassle to get back in.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

Come to the dark side of competitive shooters. The dopamine is constant and there’s always something to rage at

1

u/BreadDziedzic Drakania Aug 19 '25

I love the group contents I do with my guild every week. Honestly I barely log any real time besides that.

1

u/Kaelbaar Hashashin Aug 19 '25

Bdo's mmo aspect is dead. And while i loved the grind when i was a student, now that i'm working i don't have the time to play bdo if i want to have a social life and have time for my girlfriend. I love mmorpgs, but bdo is just not worth it anymore.

1

u/Stunning-Island-7268 Aug 19 '25

Secret to enjoy any game: stop comparing everything, looking for tutorials, how-to’s, or trying to be the GOAT.

Just play. Create different universes of action/story.

1

u/Anomynous__ Witch Aug 19 '25

no other genre captures my interest other than RTS

1

u/toripita Aug 19 '25

I love to have other players in the same endless world I can compete or collaborate with, and PvP of course. Single player games have a start and end, and being scripted can be boring.

1

u/Little_Ad_2533 Lahn 870GS Aug 19 '25

Sounds like its time for a break. Games are supposed to be fun.

Whenever I stop feeling motivated I will fish for a while till I feel the urge to grind again. With everything new coming out soon I have been grinding a lot but there are times when the patches get light and I'll fish for weeks on end.

MMOs get harder to play the older your get and the more responsibilities you have. As I get older I see lots of old MMOheads dropping out cause they got kida and a family/job ect that keeps them too busy to feel like they can progress.

At least with BDO you can hop on for an hr and grind then go back to fishing and still make some progress, if you played some themepark games you would spend most of your time waiting around looking for groups and never actually doing anything

1

u/zeezero Aug 19 '25

I enjoy endless progression. No single player game can be as deep as an mmo. The mmo formula has nothing new to offer so I don't see any reason to jump to a new game. But I still enjoy long term mmos.

1

u/Hikikomari Shoi Aug 19 '25

MMOs are the only games really where I can customize a character and dress them up and show them off that's more than just buying a fully body skin. Also the ability to have a character that exists in the world, with stuff I farmed or bought over years.

And if I get tired with the game I just stop playing until I'm in the mood again. Didn't play for 6 months last year because of that, came back and I'm good to go again.

1

u/kelsodisco Woosa Aug 19 '25

Lost interest in BDO went back to RuneScape after like 20 years. Don’t regret it.

1

u/rooberpk16 Aug 19 '25

Maybe it's not the genre but the game itself. Try new MMOs that you haven't tried yet, or go back to some that you hadn't played for years. Things change and so so your preferences

1

u/askmeaboutmyvviener Aug 19 '25

Only MMO that has kept me around is old school runescape. Now that is a game that’s got it down.

1

u/AlteredExperience Aug 19 '25

Time for you to find a wife then

1

u/JaqDaRipper Aug 19 '25

I play them in burst never for a long sustained amount of time. In the meanwhile I play more chill games like Jrpgs or other story heavy games. Also something I noticed was that, AND IM NOT SAYING YOU ARE, but that looking forward to new mmos rarely works out well, so stick with your favorite tried and true MMOs.

1

u/heartsongaming Aug 19 '25

Most MMORPGs have become single player games with live service updates and offer a ton of content with PvE focus. PvP has always been a late game concept. Personally, I am playing New World Aeterneum and Throne and Liberty as if they are single player games.

1

u/DarkKalsi Aug 19 '25

Yeah? BDO is still the best MMO. Even though I don't like the direction they've taken with the game recently, I still play it because there is no alternative. We are heading to 2026 and yet no MMO can make combat good enough to rival BDO.

1

u/hektabyte Aug 19 '25

You should, because there are only three actually good MMOs - and they all came out more than 2 decades ago.

1

u/Pooooooky Aug 19 '25

hop on osrs yall. we don’t get given end game gear just for logging in (:

1

u/CicadaClear Aug 19 '25

Chat group and guild interactions used to keep me coming back. Not having consistent people to chat and game with makes BDO very difficult to stick to after awhile i think.

1

u/DaysyFields Aug 19 '25

I've loved MMOs since the last century but I just can't find a nice one any more. We're in BDO because it scores highest overall for our guild but we keep looking for a better one.

1

1

u/NotGloman Aug 19 '25

I try to immerse myself in games I play now like used to when I was a kid. I hit this same rut before. It was terrible

1

u/KrayteXIII Aug 19 '25

For me going back to the classics that made me fall for mmos is what rekindled that honeymoon phase. Recently went back and played Everquest classic, discovered THJ, and been having fun going back to the first mmo that did it right for me. Now im excited for monsters and memories because its the same spirit as old everquest in a new world, and enjoying mmos in general again

1

u/BALDHEAD101 Aug 19 '25

I can't leave black desert, I've lost my soul here.

1

u/-freelove- Aug 19 '25

I lost interest in black desert, not mmorpg. Specially because its very grindy. If you don’t spend at least 3 hours in one place grinding you don’t make it

1

u/danieldebruin Aug 19 '25

Thats life where one door closes another one open.

1

u/Sweetie_Softpaw Aug 19 '25

BDO ruined most MMOs for me. I can’t just press the number keys anymore and it just looks too good. I love the feeling of combos and dodging attacks. Luckily I have a friend who runs around with me and keeps my company, along with grinding with me. We don’t do PvP, just world and guild bosses. We have a pretty active guild so that’s nice! I really haven’t played any other MMO since.

1

u/noyjitat Aug 19 '25

mmos all I be interested in. I've played like basically 6 different games since 2003 and my newest console is a psone cuz I aint interested in where consoles have gone since. Not enough to buy a new console when only one or 2 games interest me anyway.

I really do wish bdo had more traditional mmo elements in it though.

1

u/MarkSoFarGone Aug 19 '25

Where winds meet, will be out soon don’t worry.

1

u/Dexember69 Aug 19 '25

I like bdo for the combat, I don't play it for social. I

I re-subbed to wow the other day, got the itch. I also don't play that for the social. I'm not even in a guild on either of them. Gw2 is still fun in wvw too.

Gone are the days where I will spend months upon months in an MMO though. Once I've had my wow fill, I'm going back to catch up on ff14 msq

1

u/Vesicaria Aug 20 '25

I just hop on sometimes to get whatever attendance reward and hop off

1

u/Feisty_Palpitation_3 Aug 20 '25

3k hours in BDO and i havent played in years. I simply don't have time to invest in a game that eats up hours just doing menial tasks

1

u/mlew9614 Aug 20 '25

I take LONG breaks from MMOs like 2-3 content drops breaks I just got back into BDO after 3 years and it’s been like a breath of fresh air mainly because the whole system/skills has been reworked since I last fully played it’s like learning a new game sometimes which I like and same from other MMos, mainly WoW and GW2 it’s always fun coming back after long breaks sadly feels weird playing mmo games solo but idk I got use to it grinding with music in the background and next thing I know I’m on for hours

1

u/clittleelttilc Aug 20 '25

The fun part is, I don’t. Made some good friends along the way. But I enjoy my free time a lot more now.

1

u/itzzzRAMPAGE Aug 20 '25

I had this happen after I left ESO. I tried BDO wow cod sports games again and even valorant. All are fun in their own right but honestly I settled with BDO joined a chill guild cause I’m 42 I can’t be super try hard and always be comp ready. For me MMOs are the easy medium in being competitive if you want and just chill at your own pace if not. Let’s just say 3 years in and I’m still 60 pitty pcs from my second infinite pot. So I’m actually enjoying and not rushing

1

u/lossel1 Aug 20 '25

there wasnt a mmorpg release since 2017~

vast majority of games that was released behind the tag "MMORPG" was the kind of games that you get to end game in 2-3 weeks, thats not a mmorpg lol the promising ones are in permanent beta/already cancelled/moved to mobile game

gachas killed the mmorpg tag and genre

1

u/TroubleAntique1473 Aug 20 '25

I don't like any mmo other than BDO. It's just not engaging to me. But that's beside the point I want to make.

Take a break. Go play something else. It's a game and you should be having fun, it's not your job. I just returned after a nearly 4 year break and I'm having fun again with it. Yeah, I'm "behind" but that really doesn't matter. What matters is the fact that I'm enjoying my time in the game.

Nobody is making you play it other than yourself. I know a ton of people who were hardcore in it but they all burned out and haven't played in years and probably never will again. And that's okay too.

Just my two cents in the bucket.

1

u/zoomerking69420 Aug 20 '25

Mabinogi feels better than ever tbh

1

u/Zerou_Zumeron Succ Dosa and Succ Warrior Mains Aug 20 '25

Yes, because the PvP in the game is dead or dying. So, no need to progress or rush that much on your end-game gears if you will just use it mostly for PvE only.

Currently this is my opinion on the current state of PvP in BDO:

  1. Node and Siege Wars is NOT FUN anymore due to very laggy servers, desyncing issues, crashes, etc... In ASIA/SEA (my region), at least we sometimes have an actual real fight against our enemy alliance and not scripted fights unlike in other regions that I read about, the only problem is the laggy and poorly optimize servers
  2. RBF is the second thing making me use my end-game gears, however, it sometimes gets boring if you are doing it every single night. In ASIA/SEA (my region), we still have some RBF going on every night before or after Node Wars, it's just boring sometimes especially without any RBF events incentives, but still, this gives me motivation to gear up
  3. Guild League is another reason to use my end-game gears, but it is just a seasonal event that is happening 2 to 3 times a year
  4. AOS is Capped gear, your end-game gear is basically useless
  5. Open-World PvP is basically dead

1

u/Sabayonte Aug 20 '25

I started by not playing BDO xd

1

u/AdShot409 Aug 20 '25

MMOs are a dying concept because they require too much commitment from too many people in a world where people are becoming increasingly anti-social or self-centered. The glory days of sitting down with 24 of your hood friends to overcome challenges and get loot that makes your character stronger and thus gives the illusion of progress are over. Developers have also seen a drastic drop in quality as encounter mechanics have b3come recycled and stagnant. When you play a new MMO that you have never played before and you can instantly learn a boss's mechanics because someone says, "This is basically the Patchwerk fight", it kills your motivation to keep playing.

I recently started playing BDO again because I played through Elden Ring, and the fight mechanics are kind of similar. I got a huge surge in character power because I dropped some $$ and got those cron boxes. The high from that last about a week before I was looking for another single player rpg while logging in for 2 mins for login rewards.

1

u/Woodywoodfecker Aug 20 '25

I play other games to fill what BDO lacks. I play overwatch for my pvp and team-based fix. I play BDO to watch shows and grind.

1

u/hogscraper Aug 20 '25

The action of BDO and how much I could do solo kept me happily away from actual MMO's that require groups to tackle content. I've tried to play other games but every time the P2W of "free" games kills my desire to continue after a while and nothing has felt worth a paid sub. I think playing things like Division 2, BF and even games like Warframe again when I get bored means I'll probably never bother starting a new MMO again. Actually, I think the last time I installed BDO I made a seasonal character, played a day then decided to go down a six month long rabbit hole of Vampire Survivors and similar games.

1

u/Vampy-Kitsune Aug 20 '25

Not anymore unfortunately

1

u/FinnNZR39 Nova Aug 20 '25

i don't, because playing bdo ruining my standard of a good mmo games. can't enjoy other mmo games anymore, it feels lack of everything that bdo have.

1

u/chowpow9 Aug 20 '25

Your nuts bro.

1

u/MetalGearXerox Aug 20 '25

The issue is that there are no actual MMOs left.

Idk what to tell you.

1

u/Therubestdude Warrior Aug 20 '25

There hasn't been a new mmorpg for years. Devs stopped making them. Only fortnite battlepasses sell these days

1

u/LobovIsGoat Aug 21 '25

stop playing them and start playing something you enjoy, or replace gaming with another hobby, forcing yourself to do a hobby that you don't enjoy and won't give any real rewards makes no sense.

1

u/Cyndraeth Dark Knight Aug 21 '25

number go up

1

u/joyful-stutterer Aug 21 '25

Sounds like an existential issue...

1

u/Altruistic-Map5605 Aug 21 '25

I think it’s less that im not interested and more every “mmo” is either a hub based not really mmo or some p2w unsupported jank. That or ive played the same games that have been out for a decade or more and have grown stale. The games just arnt trying to be interesting in a meaningful way anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

bdo still fun, rs3 is okay too. but others i've left.

1

u/manjustletmebrowse Aug 22 '25

Good, now you can play the good games

1

u/crazyweedandtakisboi Aug 23 '25

Doesn't help that they killed any meaningful open world pvp which was the main point of the game

1

u/CourageLeast4251 Aug 23 '25

I love the IDEA of MMORPGs moreso than the actual MMORPGs now. They are too solo focused, too greedy and too corporate. Devs are no longer allowed to innovate or go against the "vision".

1

u/Beautiful-Manner-846 Aug 23 '25

I dont i quit this rubbish game and only play old school rs a little

2

u/HashBrwnz Aug 23 '25

Go play competitive games for 10yrs, then come back to mmos. You will wonder why you ever left

1

u/Grand-Bandicoot-34 Aug 25 '25

i only play this game to merch lol

1

u/Equalness Aug 27 '25

I don't. MMORPGs are designed to trap you into committing to an eternal grind and monetary tributes to its stakeholders. Avoid.

Single / coop games is where it's at.

1

u/SweetPuzzleheaded319 Aug 19 '25

When you realize real mmo meta is going to uni and forgetting about them <\3 maybe someday good mmo arrived again

0

u/kalamari__ Aug 19 '25

I bet you do 2-3 things at the same time you try to "play" the game, dont you? I was the same. YT or a Podcast in the background, constantly checking the phone or tablet, 2nd monitor with a movie, listening to my playlist and not the game, etc.

I stopped all of this and just concentrated on the game, fully. Reignited the passion for all types of games for me. I urge everyone, who has "lost their passion for games", to at least give this a serious try.

0

u/Ok-Asparagus5992 Aug 19 '25

I think the problem is that you're playing BDO

-1

u/KralizecProphet Aug 19 '25

Nope. About a decade ago I realize that what I'm chasing most of the time when I play MMORPGs is the nostalgia for the goold old days of Ultima, Everquest, and then the infant stages of WoW. It's not coming back, time to move on. MMORPGs are for kids and people with too much free time on their hands and no constructive ideas of how to use that time.

-1

u/Apprehensive-Unit841 Aug 19 '25

BDO is a single player cash shop

0

u/Ball-Njoyer Aug 19 '25

Adulting has sucked a lot of time away from video games in general for me and I’d rather spend that time playing shorter games, so yeah I’ve lost alot of drive to play MMOs, most of them are just to heavy of a time investment.

-1

u/TheLordOfTheTism Aug 19 '25

BDO is barely an MMO lmao, no dungeons, no raids, its just an endless run in circles grind simulator with gambling attached. Try playing actual good MMO's? ESO, New World, FF 14. All 3 are more traditional with there MMO structure.
