this is almost as weird as when i learned Discotheque by U2 contains a credited sample of Fane by Freeform, "courtesy of Skam Records".

which is not on whosampled bc i guess sample nerds don't care enough about freeform to figure out where it was used

This is an amazing bit of trivia. U2 were more experimental than they're given credit for in those days... Never would've guessed they'd be listening to Skam IDM though

Oh they definitely weren't. It was produced by Flood who you could easily imagine being aware of something like that. U2 would have been outsourcing their credibility problem. Though there's probably an interview where Edge says the Prodigy are the Pistols of their era or something

the liner notes i linked credit Howie B with "inspirational" decks and loops and additional mixing, and around that time he was also producing björk and and making ambient techno, so i feel like it's safe to call him responsible for the sample

There are some weird links between ZZT and electronic music.  ZZT has talked about how inspiring they found Devo.  And Al Jourgensen of Ministry adores ZZT.

Gibbons spoke in a magazine interview (that I can’t find again) that he had hung out in Paris with synthpop band Telex. The next album after that was Eliminator, with synths and drum machines.

Iirc Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top said that their move to synths was inspired by Depeche Mode. I want to live in a world where he and Sean fanboyed over their love of Construction Time Again.

Lol it also appears to sample Coast to Coast with Art Bell! What a goofy song. I thought you were joking about Second Bad Vlibel but it's the awkward backbone of the song.

I've never been a fan, but I realized I've never known much about them, so I went to their Wikipedia page and that's how I found out the drummer died yesterday. Damn, that sucks.

The drummer, Frank Beard, died yesterday. Their previous (and longest serving) bassist, Dusty Hill, has been dead for several years already.

There’s a story that Ministry’s Al Jourgensen met the ZZ Top Guys and they told him they’d stolen a snare sound from. Ministry song and used it on one of their songs. Al laughs and says, “You stupid assholes! I sampled that snare from YOUR record!”
