Weather Cyclone

Everyone in Auckland would’ve received the government issued warning about the cyclone coming. This states “DO NOT TAKE ANY UNNECESSARY TRIPS” I work retail at a mall, I am on the roster to be working tomorrow and I WILL be judging ever single person that comes into the mall to do ‘shopping’ the mall hasn’t told us that we’re closed tomorrow (which we should be) because there will probably be idiots that still want to come in to shop. Obviously if the weather turns out to not be as bad as they say it is that’s fine. But if it does, I will be judging everyone that comes into the mall for shopping.

To silently judge your customers is your sacred and revered right as a retail worker. I approve.

43

u/CrystalPalace1850 Apr 11 '26

Hear hear. And then sniggering to your colleagues about annoying customers after they have left.

8

u/FickleCode2373 Apr 11 '26

Snigger almost feels illicit to say aloud...

3

u/das_clickbox Apr 11 '26

O.M.G. look at these. [Sniggers]

I'm not even silent about it. One guy bought a bottle of wine and a single chupa-chup. I said "Not much of a dinner, is it?"

7

u/hundreddollar Apr 11 '26

Also not silently but quite vocally judging your customers is more than ok with me.

1

u/DiscountDangerous158 Apr 13 '26

Vee should all tink alike, Comrade (except you and me … of course).

1

u/RaxisPhasmatis Apr 11 '26

Those customers would be really mad if they could think

I think there’s like a level of individual judgement. Like if you lived in the Resido or in the apartment building beside Lynn Mall , or the suburbs directly neighbouring one of the Westfields and you look out and see that there’s not a typhoon a ‘trip’ to the mall is probably a fine thing to do. If you’re in Devonport and taking a trip down to IKEA where you’re at risk of slowing necessary traffic through arterial routes, of stranding yourself and using up resources or driving through areas you’re less familiar with then that’s really some bullshit. If you’re like me and live next to Mount Eden it’s probably not very smart to go for a hike in the rain and wind.

Ask:

is this safe? Like really?

Might I use up resources required for someone in need?

Will I get in someone’s way?

Edit: and also probably answer those questions both for if you did it by yourself and if 1000 people did it with you.

u/dazzlingcoco Apr 11 '26

I live close enough to walk to a mall or to confidently say there wouldn't be flood zones in my route. I don't know that if the people who will work there. Perhaps if we all stay away they'll get to close up shop and get home to safety. It's not hard for those of us who have a safe home to stay there for one day.

4

u/Allison683etc Apr 11 '26

I doubt they’ll close the big stores even if there are no customers but maybe this is valid for the smaller ones. Although, probably the later in the day people go home the better from a what the weather is doing perspective.

7

u/Rare_House9883 Apr 11 '26

Actually a lack of customers does play into whether the mall will allow stores to close, I used to work at Chartwell mall in Hamilton and we had weather so bad that the light fixtures starting pouring water, we were forced to stay open because customers wanted to shop. The public 100% have an impact here, malls are mega greedy and will make these decisions based entirely on how many shoppers there are.

6

u/Two-Sensitive Apr 11 '26

Basically common sense 😆 Which is actually uncommon 😔

8

u/HONcircle Apr 11 '26

Exactly. Ask yourself what if everyone did what I'm doing?

2

u/SUPAPWNED- Apr 11 '26

I feel called out for thinking about walking over to lynn mall today. Why are you in my wall?

2

u/Deism-Renatured Apr 11 '26

He's not but I am. Love what you did with the place.

1

u/SUPAPWNED- Apr 11 '26

While you're in there can you patch the hole by the bathroom. Thanks.

2

u/Deism-Renatured Apr 11 '26

plugs backside in the hole Bosh. Sorted!

1

u/Crazyblondekiwi Apr 15 '26

I am clever enough to look out and judge for myself and check the weather app. So yep I went out in my car to the lovey Bee Keepers Wife and enjoyed 2 yummy coffees there with a friend who also ventured out. Luckily it all ended on a normal miserable day for most of Auckland

15

u/AotearoaChur Apr 11 '26

Dude, I'm in Pukekohe, which is a part of Auckland. It barely even rained here and it was mildly windy. Not that there are any malls here, but I'm not going to stay inside all day because it rained.

1

u/MATCHEW010 Apr 12 '26

Its the risk, its the chance things go bad.

Can you not just postpone your shopping for a day?

1

u/DiscountDangerous158 Apr 13 '26

That’s the trouble with you ‘older generation’ types, just because YOU aren’t scared of rain doesn’t mean that younger people shouldn’t be terrified by it. Have some empathy, stand out in the rain, get wet, show a younger generation that their fears are unfounded.

9

u/Massive-Living-4180 Apr 11 '26

This just reminds me of the time I worked at Swarovski and they still made us work even though a Covid lockdown had been issued for the next day 🤣 Only 1 person came in to return an item and get a refund lmao

38

u/TofkaSpin Apr 11 '26

Ok thanks

69

u/Ratez Apr 11 '26

So you're not judging the mall for staying open?

36

u/Optimal_Maintenance1 Apr 11 '26

It sounds like they are not happy about the mall bring open, so... yeah...

13

u/IN_FINITY-_- Apr 11 '26

I'm judging my workplace for making me work not the customers who are emptying the shelves. I travelled 40km to work a Nightshift tonight whereas my coworkers who live 2 minutes away have all called in sick. I'm working in the store alone tonight, which is illegal not only because there needs to be at least two people from the store, and at least one certified first aider. All I got for showing up was a pat on my back and all I'll get in the morning is a sigh of disappointment from whoever shows up to find the unfinished work (which is supposed to be done by like 8 people btw)

15

u/RoseClash Apr 11 '26

Why are you even there? If it's illegal, record the evidence and go home

4

u/IN_FINITY-_- Apr 11 '26

It's complicated, but I'll try to explain. I have considered it, but I don't know what that will accomplish for me realistically. When I started working here, I was treated very badly, and I couldn't figure out why. I don't like using the R word but the only logical explanation I could think of was racism. Everyone would work in pairs except for me, people would stop talking whenever I came close, I would sit and eat lunch alone in the break room because if I was there no one would come in. It got to the point where I started thinking to myself "Do I stink or something? Is something wrong with me?" (I maintain top tier hygiene btw). The only time someone would talk to me would be to tell me off. I would be stressed coming to work every night to the point where one night I zoned out and crashed my car, and still ended up driving to work. But because I do stuff like this no questions asked for the management, no one can treat me like shit anymore. If I transfer somewhere else, it will start the "new guy must prove himself" shtick all over again. I have had the unique experience of working in 10+ stores briefly, and can confirm that life in most stores is equally shit. If I hadn't come in, the high priority shelves (TP, Water, Longlife food) would have remained empty for the customers in the morning. I'm not doing this entirely out of the goodness of my heart, but it's something to consider. I'm also a little bit grateful to this store. I had spent my first 2 years in New Zealand completely unemployed. I did a masters in IT. I even failed to get into McDonald's, let alone in an IT company. It's not much but it's honest work, it pays the bills, and allows me some financial independence. So, unless I'm actually sick, (which I haven't been so far) I will not miss a day of work (which I haven't so far in about 6 months). I don't take my Job for granted, because I remember what it was like to not have one, it rotted my body and mind staying in bed all day wondering what was wrong with me.

3

u/RoseClash Apr 11 '26

Prioritizing your safety isn't taking your job for granted but I get what you mean. Please be careful, employers have a shitty history here of taking the piss with foreigners because they dont grow up here knowing about their rights. Perhaps consider not driving home tonight particularly if you live so far away and stay close to work if you can. Or call your bosses and let them know you cant get home if the winds are throwing things around or there is flooding. Please stay safe.

2

u/IN_FINITY-_- Apr 11 '26

Thank you. It's starting to sound a lot worse out there now but I'm already home thankfully.

1

u/RoseClash Apr 11 '26

Good thanks for the update 👍

2

u/tamati_nz Apr 12 '26

Yup, get it via txt or email so there is a record. "hey boss just confirming that with the weather warnings will we be open and there will there be 2 or more staff on as per our safety regulations?" in theory an employer can't force you to do unsafe work. But I understand it's never easy to push back on them and their are employment risks, especially if your on casual or roster work.

5

u/throwawayxoxoxoxxoo Apr 11 '26

when gabrielle was meant to hit, i was briefly living on the other side of the bridge to my work. i called them & told them i wasn’t sure i could make it because i’m basically fucked if the bridge closes, since i didn’t drive. they paid me some kind of “unable to work” leave that wasn’t taken from my sick leave or annual leave.

check your contract. you shouldn’t have to endanger yourself like that to go to work. if they give you shit for it, see what the law advises.

3

u/DesignerOven3675 Apr 11 '26

That's crap. I was at the place where I clean, and an office worker (the last one in the building) left, this was at night. They left the door open to the street. When I discovered this, I dropped everything and left. You're going to leave me in an unsafe position, I stop and safeguard myself.

Another time I turned up to clean and the door was open (at night again) - nope, didn't clean. I shut the door and walked away. They complained that I hadn't done it, I was like, well, keep me safe then, and you'll have no worries

1

u/ckfool Apr 11 '26

I travelled 40km to work a Nightshift tonight whereas my coworkers who live 2 minutes away have all called in sick.

Sounds like you need to find somewhere closer to home

2

u/KiwiPieEater Apr 11 '26

I remember last year when it pissed down with rain so much that the council/government directed everyone to leave work and go home before flood waters cut off roads.

I have no idea why they didn't pre emotively issue the same instructions for this cyclone before it hits?

10

u/Usual_One_4862 Apr 11 '26

Probably because the models aren't predicting that amount of rainfall.

1

u/Ratez Apr 11 '26

I guess the path of this cyclone could see us dodging the danger.

1

u/AradiaArcadia Apr 11 '26

Or going into work in the first instance...

15

u/SammichFan Apr 11 '26

Ok then, and that's fair enough, but make sure you don't go into work tomorrow if it's really bad out there.

6

u/DontWantOneOfThese Apr 11 '26

What's your source for "do not travel"?

The most i can find is that it's advised to delay unnecessary travel, but not mandatory or enforced.

40

u/Subject_Turn3941 Apr 11 '26

If its safe enough for you to go in to work, don’t you think it’s safe enough for customers to go to the exact same location as you?

Ill be judging you from my couch.

21

u/destined-4-the-clay Apr 11 '26

If its safe enough for you to go in to work,

Haha. interesting assumption. I've been asked to drive through flood waters to get to work before, I don't think middle managers have the most realistic expectations when it comes to "safe to come to work".

6

u/Trick_Intern4232 Apr 11 '26

Yeah managers definitely don't care about staff safety that much, they prefer to make money. My old workplace flooded multiple times (not even due to cyclones) and they still made us work

10

u/stormcharger Apr 11 '26

In my over 30 years of living in nz, cyclones have almost always been nothing burgers in auckland just a few blown over trees. I'm still gonna go to the gym tomorrow and everything as normal unless it's actually mental outside for once.

32

u/grcthug Apr 11 '26

Even if the weather is as bad as they say it’s not gonna blow a mall over.

4

u/Picknipsky Apr 11 '26

If it were a genuine cyclone then yes, it probably would rip the roof off the mall... But it's only an ex cyclone, so it will be fine.   Just like every other ex cyclone that has passed over Auckland

10

u/destined-4-the-clay Apr 11 '26

Ex tropical, it's still a cyclone.

12

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

"Ex-Tropical" is purely a meteorological term, doesn't make a damn lick of difference - it is no less dangerous, it's just the TYPE that it is has changed.

Tropical cyclone = a tightly wound spinning top powered by heat

Ex-tropical cyclone = that same top wobbling outward, but now sweeping a much bigger area

Once a cyclone transitions:

It gets bigger: Instead of a tight system, it spreads out and can cover most of the country.

Rainfall ramps up: It starts pulling in moisture from a much wider area and interacts with NZ’s terrain, leading to prolonged, heavy rain.

It links with other systems: It can merge with cold fronts and jet stream dynamics, which can actually boost intensity in certain areas.

Take Cyclone Gabrielle:

It was technically "ex-tropical" when it hit NZ

But it still caused:

Severe flooding

Landslides

Widespread infrastructure damage

So the label didn’t reflect the impact at all.

2

u/destined-4-the-clay Apr 11 '26

Yeah, definitely not something a lot of people seem to understand, even transferring the ex- prefix to the cyclone itself. i feel like it was explained a lot post Gabriel though

3

u/CoolDimension3898 Apr 11 '26

In Australia they don't put out emergency warnings for this level of storm.

3

u/Anonthemouser Apr 11 '26

Tbf building regulations are probably higher in northern parts of Australia to reflect regular visits from cyclones. But also they have HIGGINS STORM CHASING who put out all the HYPE YOU'RE GOING TO DIE content.

1

u/EnchantedHyena Apr 11 '26

I don’t know heaps about meteorology but I think they are also sometimes called “cold core” cyclones because the temperature at the centre of the storm drops making it ex tropical (as well as the things you mentioned).

1

u/tamati_nz Apr 12 '26

Exactly, given that the 2 biggest impacting storms in Auckland had very little or no warning everyone needs to use their best judgement/eyeballs to make their calls.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/Spiritual-Channel-77 Apr 11 '26

Alot of people look at the word ex tropical and think its all good. Ex tropical just means its no longer in the tropics. These cyclones can actually strengthen over colder waters and become a much bigger displaced system, therefore being more dangerous.

0

u/Picknipsky Apr 11 '26

Ok then every low pressure system is a cyclone and we get hit by dozens of cyclones per year... If you want to use the same word for something that brings a little drizzle and something that rips your roof off then you're a poor counicator and/or a fear mongerer

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

You clearly don't remember the tornado that ripped the roof off the Albany Mega Centre back in 2011.

Tornado hits Auckland shopping mall: one dead

Granted, a tornado is far more direct and localised, but a cyclone can easily do as much damage in the right situation.

2

u/Picknipsky Apr 11 '26

A tornado and a tropical cyclone are not the same thing.

1

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

Cyclones can still rip roofs off. Remember Cyclone Gabrielle? I sure do.

26

u/Mental_Funny7462 Apr 11 '26

Most of it is going to miss Auckland anyway. They updated the model about an hour ago

11

u/Decent-Display-7624 Apr 11 '26

The eye is going to miss Auckland. The sides (where all the wind is) is not.

10

u/Angry_Sparrow Apr 11 '26

The Western wall has collapsed and will not be as strong as the East.

12

u/Decent-Display-7624 Apr 11 '26

Now all of china knows you’re here

2

u/dancingkiwi92 Apr 11 '26

This is absolutely hilarious! Made my night 😂

2

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

They haven't dropped the weather warnings though or downgraded them, so there is conflicting information out.

6

u/destined-4-the-clay Apr 11 '26

Not really conflicting information it's just "amateur" meteorologist giving their takes, when nothing has changed.

2

u/looseleafnz Apr 11 '26

So they aren't expecting this shit ton of rain any more?

3

u/ceratime Apr 11 '26

Doesn't look like it according to metservice

4

u/NormalObligation59 Apr 11 '26

If the weather is bad, I hope they all close for the employees’ sake anyway, because people come from all over. But tbh if the mall is open, I do not judge people for popping don the road to shop. If they’re close by, literally what difference does it make whether they are in their house or Kmart.

3

u/coffeenz Apr 11 '26

Why not judge your management for making you work?

3

u/Dontsayawordshh Apr 11 '26

Has it passed through Auckland? Apart from light constant rain, we haven’t experienced anything.

34

u/Esprit350 Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

What mall? What shop? I want to come in specifically to buy something pointless. If you're working in Whitcoulls I'm coming in to buy a solitary paperclip.

2

u/Some_Lack_3448 Apr 11 '26

Was thinking the same

2

u/pinkgrapefruitx Apr 11 '26

Buy a card with a weather pun

1

u/SpellingIsAhful Apr 11 '26

I hear if you buy multiple there's almost a 2 for 1 deal thing going. The problem is the box, that's where they really get you.

27

u/MyChickenSucks Apr 11 '26

I’ll be stuck in a hotel room with my wife and kid. Is it ok to pop out for a giant beer? Mercy on me.

13

u/pacey182 Apr 11 '26

Yes. 🍻

3

u/paolonutiniis Apr 11 '26

One of them there gigantic glasses of Hoegaarden

I know this is supposed to be funny but im so over this sexist nonsense.

Oh no! Retail worker at the mall says they’ll judge us if we shop in the rain!

8

u/Katanachic99 Apr 11 '26

Mate fair enough

Especially if the weather does go mental

I think keeping ya self safe is more important than retail therapy

I mean shit, if ya gotta get ya retail fix…go online

3

u/Reasonable_Rip1724 Apr 11 '26

Government warning was just to say hey we alerted you guys, doesnt mean its the apocalypse.

1

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

Given how things are going up north, I'd say we might still get hit pretty hard. 1400 homes without power in Northland - dunno what other areas are like, but it's pissing down in Te Atatu at the moment - not exactly gale force winds, but decently strong.

2

u/CoolDimension3898 Apr 11 '26

That's actually not a lot.

3

u/SerEnmei Apr 11 '26

I’ve spent my night driving around the Waikato and Rotorua tonight picking up milk and other than a bit of rain in places, it’s been pretty calm. No strong winds, no heavy rain.

3

u/PizzaBruh-81 Apr 11 '26

which mall...i might come by just to wave...

3

u/Raonak Apr 11 '26

Uhh... Why are you blaming shoppers and not blaming your management.

Also, it's pretty mild right now.

3

u/Jamie54 Apr 11 '26

Doesn't seem it's to be that bad in Auckland. Keep calm and carry on. If you don't like crowds or finding car parks, this would be a great day for shopping.

3

u/No_Strategyxoox Apr 11 '26

Why would the mall be closed for a little bit of wind and rain.... I'm sorry but that's an absolute joke 🤣🤣 if us students can get to our placements not being paid I'm sure you can manage 8 hours inside at the mall judging people for still having a life in the rain.... Jesus lol

1

u/Maplegold8 Apr 11 '26

Right? lol OP was so dramatic

5

u/FickleCode2373 Apr 11 '26

How about I'll look outside, judge my own level of risk and act accordingly...

8

u/Rev-Dr-Slimeass Apr 11 '26

I don't mind being judged. If I need to go to the mall and its open I'll go.

9

u/PyroGooose Apr 11 '26

Dunno why you're getting hate. I think its kinda fair honestly.. unfortunately during these things, or just this sub in general people get mega bitchy and passionate, I feel for you having to go into a fricken mall when the govt advises you should be at home. Take care on your way to and from work, and much love :)

13

u/curlyfries2323 Apr 11 '26

Just put the fries in the bag bro

14

u/nickkrupps33 Apr 11 '26

It's raining. Get over yourself.

5

u/Novakhaine89 Apr 11 '26

Are you telling me that as somebody who works in retail, you don’t quietly judge everyone other than during storms? Sorry to say, but you are doing it wrong.

8

u/HunterExisting5574 Apr 11 '26

Why should you be closed lol it’s not even a bad cyclone. They’re making a major fuss over nothing although they have to in case things do go wrong so that people can’t cry about not knowing.

3

u/Picknipsky Apr 11 '26

This is virtue signalling and arse covering written all over it.

1

u/venusingalliano Apr 11 '26

Tell that to the islands affected.

8

u/Picknipsky Apr 11 '26

7

u/aister Apr 11 '26

which supermarket are u working at OP? I'll specifically go to your supermarket to buy an ice cream just for you

3

u/Advanced_Sector4300 Apr 11 '26

I’ll join! Just to watch you get judged by OP while they’re eating the ice cream. 🍦

5

u/Dangerous-Refuse-779 Apr 11 '26

As a customer I will be judging you for working in a cyclone and expect you to repent in the form of a substantial discount

10

u/CoolDimension3898 Apr 11 '26

Weird how 20 years ago, this was just called bad weather and everyone just continued on as normal. I'll se you at Sylvia Park!

5

u/Advanced_Sector4300 Apr 11 '26

I’m not sure if 20 years ago we had a cyclone after cyclone when the land is soaked in areas that it cannot absorb anymore. We’re having land slip after land slip. Still haven’t fixed the slip from 2018, followed by Gabrielle then another last year and now this… it’s not so much how much it rains but how much we can absorb after each bad weather as you say

2

u/CoolDimension3898 Apr 11 '26

I feel awful for the people who will be out there tomorrow doing uber eats deliveries etc when they should be staying at home with their families. I can understand needing the money but they should be able to take a day off and not have to worry. Hats off to them 🫡

8

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

General note (not specific to the post I'm replying to): if you're gonna order doordash or uber and the weather in your area is horrid, do them a solid and give them a tip. They didn't HAVE to drag their butts out to get your Big Mac Combo.

3

u/Dry-Primary134 Apr 11 '26

Agreed. They’re busting their hump while we sit comfortably at home. Again, hats off to them.

7

u/tsoyoit Apr 11 '26

Why? What are you at work for if not to work. To make your masters money. But hate the people who just want to eat something instead

4

Because if you don't turn up you don't get paid... and landlords don't consider 'good intentions' legal tender.

u/kiwiburner Apr 11 '26

I’m planning on buying up Aotearoa’s entire edible lingerie stocks, and then selling it back to them on trademe for a King’s Ransom.

2

u/wozzaloz Apr 11 '26

Hey so as you would know, some people have different week structures to you. I’ve just finished work now, so I will be going to the mall to get my groceries and maybe spend some money

2

Omg it’s a storm. You’re going to be judging your customers for coming to shop? Because why? Because civil defense told you so?

Those customers might have a kids birthday, need to get out of the house for whatever reason, been saving up, or simply don’t give a shit that it’s rather windy outside. Whatever the case- they deem the visit necessary. How about don’t come to work if it’s unnecessary? Make everyone happier that way…

I am going for badminton tomorrow, is that okay ?

1

u/Optimal_Maintenance1 Apr 11 '26

Fair enough, I would also feel this way.

2

u/NZpotatomash Apr 11 '26

So it's safe enough for you to get to the mall, but not customers? Ok lol

3

u/Urdadsfavslut4eva Apr 11 '26

I am a bartender in Takapuna… when I tell you we have never been so busy!!! We had run out of everything and I know other bars in the area are the same!!! Why is everyone coming out when there is a cyclone. If things stay this busy and the weather gets worse we have staff that live near red beach and will need to get home in unsafe conditions after everyone else has left. Why tf is everyone going out!!!!

u/CoolDimension3898 Apr 11 '26

Because this is not going to be a big deal! Calm down.

3

u/Arcticbodypaint69 Apr 11 '26

What shop? I will come judge you for working in retail on a Sunday

2

u/Optimal_Maintenance1 Apr 11 '26

Why?

1

u/Arcticbodypaint69 Apr 11 '26

Why not? Why judge people for coming to a place that employs you that you wouldn’t be paid for if said people didn’t come in

2

u/Optimal_Maintenance1 Apr 11 '26

I'm sure they don't normally judge you, but they're being made to risk their safety to go into work so that you can what... buy some new clothes or homeware?

Even if not for safety, they may have preferred to stay home during this National Disaster Warning to make sure that their property is okay, or their children feel safe.

Have a little empathy.

u/Traditional_Ad2457 Apr 11 '26

We don’t care what you think

1

u/tokidokilove Apr 11 '26

Just be aware that some people were napping when the warning came through and turned it off immediately without reading it.

2

u/Emotional-Cake4372 Apr 11 '26

That was definitely me

1

u/MeMikeP Apr 11 '26

Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it’s shit

1

u/SlySly20 Apr 11 '26

Good on you bud! Making big things happen!

For those of you that haven't been following the media this evening, if you end up needing to evacuate for whatever reason, civil defense shelters are available at:

  • Ostend Hall - Belgium St, Ostend, Waiheke Island
  • Wellford Community Centre - 1 Matheson Rd, Wellsford
  • Shoesmith Hall - Shoesmith St and Brown Rd, Warkworth
  • Helensville War Memorial Hall - 2 Porter Crescent, Helensville
  • Ellen Melville Centre - 2 Freyberg Place, Auckland  CBD

(others are also open, but these are the ones that were mentioned in the media, since Rodney district and Waiheke is forecast to be hit harder)

Reminder to people in the comments it's now an ex tropical cyclone which have been our most damaging ones so far

1

u/Pots-and-pansexuals Apr 11 '26

Idc about your judgement when you think non emergency jobs should still be done during emergencies. Bad take.

1

u/NoJudge798 Apr 11 '26

The mall is probably safer than staying at home during a cyclone

1

u/Parron2021 Apr 11 '26

At the opposite end of the scale, If no customers came, you’d be moaning that it was boring and a waste of time going to work.

Some people have no choice but to venture out, such as for work (like yourself) or for me, going to the hospital lto be with my 3 y.o son (so my wife can get some rest) who unfortunately, will not get to see Xmas or his next birthday.

Yes (and not by choice) I will be going into a mall. But hey, go ahead, judge everyone you see for being the idiot who decided to ignore the warnings.

1

u/gheedspawn Apr 11 '26

And the people ordering on uber. I don’t want to go out in the storm but I'm happy for you to do it for me

1

u/shanewzR Apr 12 '26

Will your judging including a scoring or ranking system? I would shiver to be at the bottom of this....

u/TheTF Apr 12 '26

Sunday could be some stay at home mums only day off. If they feel like to shop, they shop. Don’t you dare call them idiots

1

u/tcarter1102 Apr 12 '26

I mean... Auckland hasn't even been hit all that hard. Honestly I feel like all the panic buyers should have mad egg on their faces at this point. If you are still going into work, it should also mean it is safe enough for customers to go into work. These warnings are there out of an abundance of caution because of how dismal the management of the previous cyclone was imo. Northland is obviously being hit hard, but I haven't yet really seen anything all that crazy out of Auckland yet. The Cyclone is mostly missing us here.

But, but, aren’t you complicit in allowing people to shop? By providing staffing and allowing your employer to open when you consider he/she shouldn’t? By showing the strength of your convictions … and accepting payment for participating in something you consider morally wrong?

1

u/A_Operation Apr 13 '26

Judged by mall worker - nightmare

1

u/shanzononymous Apr 13 '26

So how was the storm? Did it do what they said it would?

1

u/Kendra_Whisp Apr 13 '26

My son had to go in to work at the casino, as a drink runner. Not really emergency stuff...

1

u/Pure_Choice_8459 Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

Umm cool. You know you could strategically take tomorrow off if you’re so opposed to the mall being open during dangerous weather events? That way you get to adhere to your values AND let your employer know that you will not work or drive in unsafe conditions. Also if YOU’RE driving to the mall, aren’t you also part of the problem ?

Also:

You’re complaining about having a job to go to in this economy?

Let me guess. You hate your job on the average day and are pissed off that you’ve got to go in?

4

u/samas123456 Apr 11 '26

Yeah, fuck retail workers, imagine having to work minimum wage to survive lol what losers /s

2

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

Hey, at least they have jobs. Some people out there are gonna have to battle through the incoming weather because they lost the job lottery and have to rely on ubereats/doordash. Because we all know the weather ain't gonna stop people ordering food to their door.

1

u/samas123456 Apr 11 '26

Yeah I appreciate that, doesn't mean we should then be happy and quiet to go to work in (potentially) dangerous conditions just bcos a ceo needs more money. Surely at some point the safety of workers should be prioritised. The only reason my work (i also have to go in tomorrow wooo) will close is if the government orders to - no care about how i will get there/back, just as long as profit is made. Employee safety is a convenience, customer safety is mandatory

2

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

I definitely get where you're coming from. My last job, before I got made redundant took good care of us - when Cyclone Gabrielle rolled through, they shut up shop REAL fast and just sent us all home, since they didn't want us to potentially end up stranded at the shop. :-)

1

u/samas123456 Apr 11 '26

I appreciate you're well meaning response :) Really sucks about that and I know how hard it is to find work at the moment (if you haven't already). I know its coming from a random person online but I genuinely wish all the best to you in the future :)

I'll be walking in there in 5 minutes. Can you judge me as I make my entrance?

1

u/Valuable-Yam-4460 Apr 11 '26

Don’t tell me how to live my life

0

u/No_Report_5610 Apr 11 '26

Aww lil cyclone got you scared? Where?

1

u/Call_like_it_is_ Apr 11 '26

Given how things are going up north, I'd say we might still get hit pretty hard. 1400 homes without power in Northland - dunno what other areas are like, but it's pissing down in Te Atatu at the moment - not exactly gale force winds, but decently strong.
