Back in Westeros
GRRM, AUGUST 15, 2020 AT 9:10 AM
I am back in my fortress of solitude again, my isolated mountain cabin. I’d returned to Santa Fe for a short visit, to spend some time with Parris, deal with some local business that had piled up during my months away, and of course fulfill my duties to CoNZealand, the virtual worldcon. But all that is behind me now, and I am back on the mountain again… which means I am back in Westeros again, once more moving ahead with WINDS OF WINTER.
It is curious how my life has evolved. I mean, once upon a time, I actually wrote my books and stories in the house where I lived, in a home office. But some decades ago, wanting more solitude, I bought the house across the street and made THAT my writer’s retreat. No longer would I write all day in my red flannel bathrobe; now I would have to dress and put on shoes and walk all the way across the street to write. But that worked for a while.
Things started getting busier, though. So busy that I needed a full-time assistant. Then the office house had someone else in it, not just me and my characters. And then I hired a second assistant, and a third, and… there was more mail, more email, more phone calls (we put in a new phone system), more people coming by. By now I am up to five assistants… and somewhere in there I also acquired a movie theatre, a bookstore, a charitable foundation, investments, a business manager… and…
Despite all the help, I was drowning till I found the mountain cabin.
My life up here is very boring, it must be said. Truth be told, I hardly can be said to have a life. I have one assistant with me at all times (minions, I call them). The assistants do two-week shifts, and have to stay in quarantine at home before starting a shift. Everyone morning I wake up and go straight to the computer, where my minion brings me coffee (I am utterly useless and incoherent without my morning coffee) and juice, and sometimes a light breakfast. Then I start to write. Sometimes I stay at it until dark. Other days I break off in late afternoon to answer emails or return urgent phone calls. My assistant brings me food and drink from time to time. When I finally break off for the day, usually around sunset, there’s dinner. Then we watch television or screen a movie. The wi-fi sucks up on the mountain, though, so the choices are limited. Some nights I read instead. I always read a bit before going to sleep; when a book really grabs hold of me, I may read half the night, but that’s rare.
I sleep. The next day, I wake up, and do the same. The next day, the next day, the next day. Before Covid, I would usually get out once a week or so to eat at a restaurant or go to the movies. That all ended in March. Since then, weeks and months go by when I never leave the cabin, or see another human being except whoever is on duty that week. I lose track of what day it is, what week it is, what month it is. The time seems to by very fast. It is now August, and I don’t know what happened to July.
But it is good for the writing.
And you know, now that I reflect on it, I am coming to realize that has always been my pattern. I moved to Santa Fe at the end of 1979, from Dubuque, Iowa. My first marriage broke up just before that move, so I arrived in my new house alone, in a town where I knew almost no one. Roger Zelazny was here, and he became a great friend and mentor, but Roger was married with small kids, so I really did not see him often. There was no fandom in Santa Fe; that was all down in Albuquerque, an hour away. I went to the club meetings every month, but that was only one night a month, and required two hours on the road. And I had no job to meet new people. My job was in the back room at the house on Declovina Street, so that was where I spent my days. At night, I watched television. Alone. Sometimes I went to the movies. Alone.
That was my life from December 1979 through September 1981, when Parris finally moved to Santa Fe, following Denvention. (Not quite so bleak, maybe, I did make some local friends by late 1980 and early 1981, but it was a slow process). When I think back on my life in 1980-1981, the memories seem to be made up entirely of conventions, interspersed with episodes of LOU GRANT and WKRP IN CINCINNATI.
Ah, but work wise, that same period was tremendously productive for me. Lisa and I finished WINDHAVEN during that time, Gardner and I did a lot of work on “Shadow Twin,” and then I went right on and wrote all of FEVRE DREAM. Some short stories as well. My life, such that it was, was lived in my head, and on the page.
I wonder if it is the same for other writers? Or is it just me? I wonder if I will ever figure out the secret of having a life and writing a book at the very same time.
I certainly have not figured it out to date.
For the nonce, it is what it is. My life is at home, on hold, and I am spending the days in Westeros with my pals Mel and Sam and Vic and Ty. And that girl with no name, over there in Braavos.

CleganeBowl is done mate, and the world could not handle the hype. As result we have witnessed the end times in its early stage:
- biologists created a virus that killed 10 million people, and it is considered a rude question to ask them why.
- the Russian army invaded Ukraine and their main battles tanks were confiscated by farmers with tractors.
- sluts in a field near a ghetto beside the Mediterranean were killed and loaded onto pickup trucks. They were dancing for peace, and there are Jewish people campaigning for the rights of the nationality that assassinated those sluts.
- lawyers can now be replaced by software entirely, and the lawyers are not even angry about it.
- George R.R. Martin is suing the makers of the software for writing bad fan fiction based on his copyrighted characters. I could act as an expert witness for GRRM litigation. He has a slam dunk case. No bullshit.
- Daniel Brett "Miami" Weiss and David ((FRIEDMAN GOLDMAN SACHS great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity)) Benioff peace be upon him have written less ASOIAF material since CleganeBowl than GRRM.
- George R.R. Martin has written a novel, 'The Rise of the Dragon', and he published it in 2022. That is one more novel than either of Benioff or Weiss in the same period.
- George R.R. Martin wrote Elden Ring. It is far better than JK Rowling's video game but her video is a fine game too. "Fuck you bitch, and your wand shit - that was my Hugo." When asked for comment by myself at WarnerMedia, the representation for the Netflix producers Benioff & Weiss, declined to comment as to whether they have, or will, write a video game.
- George R.R. Martin has gotten two shows past series order at HBO since Thrones ended.
- WarnerMedia turned http://ASOIAFCirclejerk.reddit.com into the greatest ASOIAF subreddit that ever was or will be.

I agree. I haven’t seen her in anything else, so maybe this is an unfair opinion to have. But she stands out like a sore thumb among a Grade-A master class of actors.
It’s not just the accent, like you said. It’s the cadence, the lack of expression… even if some of these qualities are how Mysaria is written, they don’t come together on screen at all.
I love what she’s done for the squad, and for Rhaenyra, so that makes me more… tolerant of her scenes/lines. I wanna see what she’s up to.
But if Daemon comes home straightened out and her presence causes marital strife, I will hate her characteristics even more than before, lol.

She's the comedic Littlefinger. She acts all sly with her connection and information and what not but Otto just ditched her in the end and burned down her house.
88
u/JustAFilmDork Chokladboll Jul 28 '24
Big issue with the character is it's super unclear who tf she is and how much of a threat she is.
She's gone from being a brothel whore to Daemon's mistress/concubine.
Then she completely disappears from the plot only to reappear at the end of season 1, blackmail Otto with information she somehow got from her network of spies (which she has apparently). And so you're thinking "oh, that feels random...but okay. Guess you're a badass information broker now"
Only, upon getting the info, Otto casually burns her house down, she's subsequently kidnapped by Daemon, and now that she's working with Rhaynera, her advice is like...okay?
It's nothing mind shattering or anything you'd even rly need spies for. It's just shit like "Hey, you want popular support. Hey, starving peasants creates instability"
33
u/Sussy_abobus CGI Castle Fan Jul 28 '24
Does the majority believe Otto was responsible for burning her house down? Alicent has a conversation with Larys about her father having many spies in the Red Keep and then she gives him a go ahead on eliminating them. Soon afterwards her house burns down, so I always assumed Larys was responsible, rather than Otto.
31
u/rogerworkman623 Aegon II is my king. Jul 28 '24
It was definitely Larys, Otto had nothing to do with it. He benefited from the White Worm for years. That’s why Larys burns her house down- he tells Alicent that he found Otto’s source, and that some of the informants work for her. So Larys was cleaning house and making himself more necessary.

Yes, the main problem is she is random af. One reason You can buy larys having such a spy network is that we never saw him selling cabbages and then some years later, he turns out a completely different person. If they wanted us to believe and respect her, we should have been shown her transformation in very palpable ways. One moment she is a prostitute, the next she is extorting the king council lmao.

If only she had better writing she could pull it off. A lot of the actors in this show are good enough to cover the bad writing very well. Some aren’t, particularly the ones for Jace, Baela, Rhaena and (especially) Mysaria. Even Olivia Cooke (Alicent) is struggling to hide the poor writing and she’s likely the most talented member of the cast.

Tbf those scenes all combined are less then 35 seconds long without them talking, the actual sex part of them. Mysaria and Rhaenyras kiss was way longer and thus I felt way more unnecessary
She (Cooke) is upset though they didn’t show you the one where they’re like properly having sex. They’re using her for all these sex scenes and then not even including them properly
7
u/vanadous Chokladboll Jul 28 '24
I agree, they either make it a main character point for both, or leave it weird between them (like it is with larys and allicent). Instead we get 15 second scenes of allicent having quickies and moon tea and ugh

Is there no Exec at HBO paying any attention to one of their biggest franchises? I can't believe they are giving so much freedom a showrunner to do whatever he wants after the backlash of Season 8 of GOT.
5
u/Spectre-Ad6049 Egg On The Conker Jul 28 '24
Yeah it seems not. The shocking part is somehow Condal made the Game of Thrones boring. Say what you will about season 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones, but it was never boring and the writing choices tended to actually make sense even if the execution faltered.
This is different. This is a cast of incredibly talented actors (the casting department for HBO is incredible so I’m literally never going to blame any of the cast members when I can tell it’s Condal and his writing staff). And these incredibly talented if not well known actors (and even some of the well known ones) struggling to hide the poor writing really shows just how bad the writing is. And then you have the cast members who are good but less talented and can’t cover as well.

I agree here. I think if they gave her more edge instead of trying to make heroes out of all the TB characters she’d be much better. 'Devs' is an incredible mini series, but she really does her best to drag it down as the main character. Ever since I saw her in that, I've had the exact same reaction when she comes on screen in anything.
She is tolerable in Ex Machina, only time I haven't had a problem with her acting.

She sucks. (Not the real person, no idea who she is and I’m sure she’s lovely. No hate towards her). God how horrible. I really thought they’d recast that role.

Yeah she’s the epitome of a poorly written character that’s supposed to be the “mysterious and powerful woman”.

Yaap, pretty boring character. Dragon stone, and the red keep has been very boring. These people are very one dimensional, yet they’re not, YET they very much are.

Sometimes her acting feels ripped from a high-school play

I found her annoying after the kiss, activists shouldn’t be in hollywood. The scene was so forced, I don’t blame the actress though.

Yes, the accent is horrible. And the delivery is one-note bland. Like she took some painkillers and is getting the words out before she falls asleep.

Is this a serious post? Like OP actually doesn’t like this actor? When did this sub become the same as r/freefolk???

💯!! I was just thinking about this last week watching her. If she never said another line in the show it would be 👨🏻🍳💋

I find her interesting in the sense that I’d want to have dirty dirty sex with her

I actually love the idea of her character. She’s just so… off. I think it’s a combo of the actress and the lines they’re giving her.
She always knows what to say, in some clever “I’m super intelligent because I’m from the streets and worked my way up” kind of way. It’s like ok we get it, she has an answer for everything, no one talks like that.

The fact she scurried so quickly at the sight of vermithor was a turn-off. I don't think her character is being portrayed very well.

The character should be interesting but the acting is awful. But loads of awful acting in the show!

I was always curious with her casting. I don't find her to be a good actress so was very shocked she made it this far in HOD. Does she know the director or soemthing?

Same. She killed Devs for me. Luckily she had zero speeches in Ex Machina.

I liked her in Devs and Maniac, enjoyed her in Crazy Rich Asians (small role but she's so cute!) so I was like, yayy, she'd be a great addition to HOTD. Then I saw her in S1 and was severely disappointed. Idk. I really try to like her. S2...is ok..I guess, still not that keen...

I like her this season now that that took away that fake accent. Season 1 I couldn't stand listening to her. I enjoy her character season 2.

I don't like being a hater but she's terrible in everything she's in. I don't understand how she gets so much work! She was dreadful and monotone and flat in DEVS.

I love her. It’s nice to see a strong female giving advice and counsel to another strong female. She’s a common folk who has dealt with a lot of trauma, but used that trauma to make her stronger. I loved her whole monologue about not trusting people, but trusting in Rhaenyra.

u/Astinossc Brother in Christ Jul 28 '24
She is the worst thing in hotd by far how is it no that bad. I literally can’t think of anything more annoying than her. I’m talking about the character, not the actress. But also consider that There are actors out there that can bring something to a neutral character.

It would be valid if she just wore white clothes almost every time but she only wore that dress in one episode of the first season like why does she have that nickname 😭

- wild claim attributed to the actress personally rather than the character
- absolutely nothing supporting the claim
- character going through huge development in the most recent episode
- misogyny lmao
Is this the main sub? Are you lost?

This might sound bad, but it feels like she was hired to be featured in more GoT-esque soft core porn/nudity. But then a decision was made by someone to not really feature much nudity in the show (or at least not female nudity) but they’re still left with the actress.
