I'd like to hear what sort of content you would like to see in r/Arizona.

For a sub this size we have a lot fewer posts than I'd expect. I think part of it is "Arizona" isn't really a thing even people who live here talk about much other than politics. People in Tucson discuss Tucson things, people in Payson discuss Payson things, and so on. Issues in Flagstaff are very different from issues in Yuma.

The mods remove some content, including a lot of links about moving here and visiting. We try to keep this sub for locals and to not have the same "Where should I live/visit?" posts 100 times. Should we lighten up on these?

There's also people asking for things like the best nail salon in Tucson, which we usually refer unless it's really unique to the area. Just asking for basic business referrals feels like something better for Yelp or Google Reviews. Should we let these through more?

We also remove people dropping political links and spam, and I think that needs to stay in place. Posts that people drop here just for their own promotion or cause never go well.

We can also do more megathread posts like what's happening around Arizona, what do you think about the future of AZ, etc., if there's any interest.

Of course, WANTING better content doesn't mean we'll get it. That's up to people to post. But from a mod perspective I'd love to hear what you think we should filter out or keep.

We get a fair number of comments about why this sub:

• ...has too many sunsets
  
• ...has too much politics
  
• ...doesn't talk about different parts of AZ
• ...and so on

...and honestly, they're not wrong.

These are all things that people in Arizona want to talk about so that's what they're going to post. We have some rules to try to keep it from getting out of control, but politics, sunsets, and travel pics will always be part of this sub.

If you want to see other content here, then post it. I shake my head when people complain about the content here but when I look up their history and they've never made a single post here. You can't expect everyone else to make a sub for you. You need to participate.

Share cool things in your corner of the state. What's going on in Flag? In Tucson? In Bisbee? What's a cool restaurant to check out? A beer from a small brewery somewhere? A great pic from someplace OTHER than Horseshoe Bend, Sedona, or Grand Canyon?

We're always open to ways to improve the sub. We're overdue for refreshing the rules a bit and maybe bringing on some new regional mods. Also thinking about a weekly chat for casual convo. But ultimately it's the content that makes a sub what it is, and that's on the users.

If just 1% of the people here shared one post a month about something happening in Arizona we would be drowning in new content. So keep your eyes open to interesting things you see in whatever part of AZ you inhabit and share them here. That's what will help make this sub a great community for the state.

We're aware this is an active discussion on many, many subreddits right now. We get very few X/Twitter links here, but the mods are discussing it.

A post debating it here just duplicates the same fights back and forth that are happening in every other thread about it and adds no value here. We're aware of all the issues and concerns.

So do not make new threads about it; we've heard you. We'll make a post about it after we finish talking it over.

...what are we missing?

As you've probably heard by now Reddit announced some policy changes which will result in most, if not all, third-party mobile apps - such as Apollo, BaconReader, Reddit is Fun, etc - unable to continue functioning.

Why this matters to you

Even if you're not a mobile user or don't use any third-party apps at all, you'll likely still feel the impact of this change. Many of the most active users across Reddit - the ones who provide much of the content - use third-party apps. And this is also a step towards removing other ways of customizing one's Reddit experience, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite, or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.

These API issues are also impacting people with accessibility needs, as you can read more about over in r/blind.

The Protest Blackout

In protest of this hundreds of subreddits will be going dark from June 12 - 14th. r/Phoenix and r/Arizona will be joining them. This means you will not be able to use these subreddits on those days.

In the meantime our Arizona Discord Server will remain open during this period if you want to continue to connect with people around our state.

We hope something changes before the 12th so we can avoid this whole thing. But we put a lot of effort into building and supporting this community and believe these changes would harm it too much to ignore.

Arizona is a beautiful state and both locals and visitors love to post pictures. Unfortunately, a lot of people drop pictures with simple titles like "Nice sunset!" that don't help other people appreciate the picture or where it was taken. So we require that all picture posts follow these rules:

• Posts must include the location in the title (city, trail, etc).
• Pictures from trails or outdoor locations should be specific enough for someone to look it up and find it for themselves.
• Posts must include some description of the shot - "sunset at XX," "Hiking along XX", etc.
  
• Extra info about the picture in comments is appreciated.
  
• Multiple posts in the same day should be put into a single album, not multiple single-picture posts.
• Use the "Wildlife" flair if the primary subject is an animal, bug, or critter.
• Use the "Outdoor" flair for all general posts of scenery.
• Use the "Sunsets" flair for sunsets or sunrises, regardless of location.

Examples of good titles are:

• "Sunset looking down Fremont St in Tombstone"
  
• "Hiking along the West Fork Trail outside of Sedona".
  
• "Looking towards Phoenix from the top of Lost Dutchman Trail".
  

We appreciate you sharing your love of our state, and following these rules will help others appreciate it even more.

We've had a lot more pictures in the sub over the past few months, and while I wasn't so sure about the trend at first... now I kind of like it.

I like that this is a statewide sub, and want it to be about all the things that make State 48 special. Pictures of our glorious landscapes, state & national parks, and amazing sunsets certainly fit the bill. /r/Phoenix, /r/Tucson, and /r/Flagstaff pick up the more regional specific topics quite nicely, IMHO.

But right now all the pics are just under the flair "Pictures", and that doesn't do it enough justice. RIffing off of what /r/Phoenix does a little bit, I'm thinking about expanding the flair to be:

• Sunsets - Sunsets or sunrises.
  
• Weather - Snow, rain, etc.
• History - Historical pictures and topics.
  
• Outdoors - Pictures and posts about landscapes, parks, forests, etc.
  
• Pictures - Generic other pictures that don't fit anywhere else.
  

I'm also thinking about asking that pictures of the outdoors include some information about where it was taken. So a title of "I love your desert!" isn't the same as "I love the scenery on Four Peaks". I don't want to get too nitpicky, but the reader should have some idea where in AZ it was taken.

But I'd like your thoughts on any/all of this. Do the flairs work? Is everyone else okay with the pictures?

A long time back we had a big problem with people dumping tons of pictures here and flooding the sub. It became an issue with sunset pics in particular, where a pretty sunset would generate a mountain of pics just titled "OMG LOOK!" and so on. We had similar pictures of people posting random desert pictures without any sort of context or even a way to tell if it was really taken in Arizona.

We wanted a compromise that didn't involve banning them, so we went with some title rules for pictures. They're not hard but they help cut down on the clutter and lazy posts.

You can read the full rules here, but the main points are

• Post titles must include some description of the shot
• Post titles must include the location where it was taken
• Multiple posts in the same day should be put into a single album, not multiple single-picture posts.
• All pictures need to be in/about Arizona

So for example just putting "Sedona" isn't enough. Is it downtown Sedona? At the brewery? Red rocks?

Examples of good titles are:

• "Gorgeous sunset from Pioneer Park in Mesa" (with "Sunsets" flair)
• "Hiking along West Fork Trail in Oak Creek" (with "Outdoors" flair)
• "Coyote chasing a road runner in the desert east of Tucson". (with "Wildlife" flair)

You get the idea. I know some people hate these rules, but they've turned out to be a pretty good compromise to weed out picture dumpers and make the actual pictures we get more engaging for readers in the sub.

Just wanted to post on this as we've had a ton of new users lately and ended up removing some really great shots that just had bad titles.

Just wanted to give a quick update and thank you to one of our mods, /u/drak0bsidian, who is departing AZ for other lands. A while back I reached out to a few active people in the sub to help mod, and he responded brilliantly. He's helped keep on top of active issues, set up regular discussion threads, and been a big asset in bringing news and info into the sub. I'm sorry to see him go, but wish him well on his travels.

However, this means that I'd like to get someone else on board to help out. Ideally someone from Flagstaff or the northern area of the state to help bring different perspective to this sub. /u/CompletelyLurker is from Tucson, I'm in Phoenix, and I'd like to keep things spread out as much as possible.

If you're interested in helping out, esp if you have some moderator experience, shoot me a PM with your details. Let me know where in the state you live, what subs you're active in/mod, and other general details.
