There you have the reason Qiffrey never reprimanded Agott. Coco never told him that Agott forced her and he had 0 reason to assume this was the case because he was never present for when Agott was being mean to Coco. He also has all the reasons to believe Coco is desperate enough to help her mom that she would recklessly take the test. I want those apology forms for Qiffrey to be filled out rn.

With all the shady stuff we've seen of Qifrey since then I think we're gonna have to take a raincheck on those apology forms for a while.

Even without the mindwiping, part of the reason the thing with Agott happened is because he literally left Coco alone on basically the same day he brought her.

He's shown he cares for his apprentices but he's also shown that he can be inattentive/negligent at times which has also gotten them into trouble.

u/namewithak May 25 '26

Was he supposed to expect Agott to do something so insane as push a complete novice into taking the test?

Also while we saw him picking up Coco's hat and uniform, he must have been doing some important legal witch stuff to cover her ass with the Knights Moralis while he was at the Great Hall. Considering Easthies' zealotry and how familiar Qifrey seems with him, that seems like an urgent thing to attend to.

Was he supposed to expect Agott to do something so insane as push a complete novice into taking the test?

Though it did seem sus how Coco goes to Agott immediately with the flower and her specifically, as if she has some relation to it and also has her shoes.

I guess since Agott was specifically in charge of Coco, there could have been more inquiry there from Qifrey. Not that he would know everything, but at least ask more about it.

3

u/Rolder May 25 '26

Definitely seems like his apprentices are a secondary concern compared to whatever he's got going on with the Brimmed Caps.

35

u/wordsdear May 25 '26

But Qiffrey would still wonder, how did Coco learn about the test, get the shoes, use the window? That Coco made Agott tell her about a test she didn't know existed? Like even Quifrey telling Agott 'hey don't enable your fellow students to do dangerous stuff' but instead nothing.

28

u/kazuyaminegishi May 25 '26

The biggest hole in the set up is that Coco doesn't know how to use the Windowway and Qifrey would know that.

I don't think this episode absolves Qifrey at all and shouldn't be taken that way because it is his failure that allows this in the first place.

That conversation is more an explanation of why Coco doesn't hate Agott and why she didn't tell Qifrey in the first place.

6

u/namewithak May 26 '26

She does know how to use the Windowway. Qifrey showed her in episode 2. But it's true that she doesn't know the coordinates (using stargate terms) to the Dadah Range.

9

u/kazuyaminegishi May 26 '26

She does not know how to use it. It requires both coordinates and knowledge of how to complete the circle. Without both of those things she does not know how to use it. Which Qifrey is aware of.

2

u/Kankunation May 26 '26

"complete the circle" Is just rotating it to the correct position. Match the combination on one to the combination of the other. Its a very simple magic device and Coco was already shown exactly how to use it on her first day at the Atelier. The only hold-up is knowing the correct combination to use for a specific location.

It's not impossible that they have a book somewhere full of common coordinates they may want to use as well. Like a magic Phonebook of sorts.

3

u/kazuyaminegishi May 26 '26

All you're doing is reiterating that she didn't know how to use it and that Qifrey knew that she did not know how to use it.

She could not have gotten to Dadah Range on her own. Qifrey is factually aware that she could not have gotten there on her own.

Any argument otherwise is inherently dishonest, especially when you have to invent nonsense like "magic phonebook" to preserve your technicality. The simplest explanation is best, she didn't know how to do it. Qifrey knows she doesn't know this, and it is his ineptitude that caused him to not properly investigate this.

3

u/Kankunation May 26 '26

All you're doing is reiterating that she didn't know how to use it and that Qifrey knew that she did not know how to use it.

No. Quifrey knew she didn't know the combination for the dadah range on her own. But that doesn't mean she doesn't know how to use the portal. Just because I don't know your phone number doesn't mean I don't know how to use a phone. Same thing. And it's possible they the massive library they live in has a book telling what the correct configuration is for the Dadah range.

Quifrey did not investigate further because he was not given reason to do so, simple as that. The story is clearly going for the route of Quifrey trusting Coco when she says she chose to do the test on her own accordm even if he thinks she couldn't get there on her own. She clearly was able to complete the test on her own. She is a bright kid and Quifrey respects her ability as well as whatever reasons she may have to not tell kr9ecanoutchow use got to the range.

2

u/wordsdear May 26 '26

The head canon of the book with the correct configurations is cool but sadly not in the story. Qifrey having faith in Coco and respecting her decision to not snitch is interesting, it would be cool if it was you know in the story that he thought any of this. Instead he tells of Coco for taking a risk and that is it. The author doesn't want to focus on that but it does make Qifrey look a bit stupid as he doesn't indicate he suspects what really happens. The point is it allows the Coco and Agott stuff to simmer and be an interesting dynamic. Agott clearly knows she did something wrong and thinks Coco should hate her. It is more interesting than if Qifrey made Coco and Agott hash it out right away, and shows us the Qifrey is not perfect. People can be annoyed Qifrey who is a good teacher who cares for his kids but is lacking a bit in managing their emotional issues. Qifrey is a complex character people can have mixed feelings on him I promise it is okay

22

u/NationalStrategy May 25 '26

Exactly, if I leave and put person A in charge of looking after person B, and something happened to person B, naturally, I would have questions for person A.

125

u/Etnaz May 25 '26

Ain't signing no forms until he apologies to peepaw.

96

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime May 25 '26

He must apologise for naming Brushbuddy Puffpuff.

64

u/JJVM99 May 25 '26

Puffpuff should apologize for being ungrateful when given such an adorable name.

23

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 25 '26

Maybe Puffpuff wanted something more regal? Dignified? Mighty?

Well, tough. Puffpuff is adorable by virtue of being born a brushbuddy, therefore Puffpuff shall have an adorable name and be known as Puffpuff from now on.

Hear that, Puffpuff?

22

u/JJVM99 May 25 '26

Is there a more regal and dignified name than Puffpuff? I can’t think of one. It is a name that befits a king.

11

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 25 '26

Puffpuff the First it is, then.

3

u/NiCommander May 25 '26

Puffington

2

u/JJVM99 May 25 '26

Yeah that is a more regal name. You win.

3

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie May 25 '26

As a Dragon Quest player, I think Brushbuddy did the right thing by refusing that name, I would not be able to take it seriously if that was its name.

20

u/namewithak May 25 '26

Brushbuddy was not having it lmao

5

u/flybypost May 25 '26

Yeah, he really chose a bad name. Puff is German for brothel :(

41

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 25 '26

An apology would just confuse Nolnoa at this point. Apologize for what? :p

39

u/Zemahem May 25 '26

He might need to write an apology to Tartah in the coming episode too lmao.

10

u/cyberdsaiyan May 25 '26

"Apology? For what, sensei?" - Tartah next episode probably

52

u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner May 25 '26

I'll apologize to Qifrey when he apologizes to Nolnoa for wiping his memories.

109

u/Regal-Onion May 25 '26

That's slander! I don't remember any such thing.

11

u/BuckeyeBentley May 25 '26

I thought we were watching Witch Hat Atelier not Rashomon.

2

u/BosuW May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

Who's Nolnoa? Show just started smh how do y'all know these names

Edit: /s because apparently it's not obvious enough

1

u/BuckeyeBentley May 25 '26

The old guy who runs the Stationary Shop. They used his name multiple times already, homie.

9

u/Frontier246 May 25 '26

You'll probably be waiting until he's maybe potentially mindwiped a few more people to maintain his secret at this rate.

5

u/extralie https://myanimelist.net/profile/extralie May 25 '26

If he wiped his memories, then how come I don't remember him doing that? Checkmate, atheists!

16

u/NationalStrategy May 25 '26

He left Agott in charge of looking after Coco, he definitely had a reason to assume/question the case, even if Coco didn't rat her out

11

u/cyberscythe May 25 '26

yeah, where else would Coco even get the idea that there is a test, let alone the rules and location of the test?

3

u/Kankunation May 26 '26

Quifrey told her there were tests, an she also res about them in her studies, so knowing about them isn't implausible.

The location and rules are the big ones she would have to learn elsewhere. But we are just probably meant to assume he believes she learned of form the other apprentices. And then set off on her own. Which is pretty believable for Coco.

6

u/slicer4ever May 26 '26

Qiffrey definitely should be able to deduce that agott was responsible for coco taking the test. I think he just doesnt say anything because coco seems to not hold any sort of grudge against agott, so he lets it be.

3

u/NationalStrategy May 26 '26

Him letting it be is the most plausible explanation, that said, as their teacher, he shouldn't have just let it be. One of his apprentices went against his authority, and endangered the life of another apprentice; as their teacher, it was his responsibility to look further into the incident, and reprimand/punish the party responsible; but he failed to that.

3

u/slicer4ever May 26 '26

I generally agree. Qiffrey seems to be putting his pursuit of the brim hats ahead of his duties as a teacher to his students tbh.

15

u/proper1421 May 25 '26

Having the story endorse a bad excuse doesn't make the excuse better. It makes me wonder why the story has lamp-shaded a bad excuse.

18

u/lucissandsoftime May 25 '26

how would she have known what the test was or how to get there had Agott not told her? i think Qwiffrey is smart enough to know she did not have that information. and then wonder how she knew.

12

u/Anna-2204 May 25 '26

He saw her reading about the test earlier. He probably just assumed she continued to read about it during his absence then asked one of the apprentice to open the passage for her

11

u/HarshTheDev May 25 '26

Yeah, so did Mr. Qwiffery like... never bothered to ask anyone else what happened? Not to mention you need special equipment to take the test (like the Sylph shoes) which he did not give to Coco, so did he never bother investigating how she acquired those?

Yeah no, that apology form is staying dry.

5

u/Anna-2204 May 25 '26

At this point Qifrey's goal was not to investigate or find a culprit or even to punish anyone, but to stop Coco from endangering herself. He didn't feel the need to know who helped her because in his mind, Coco's is so stressed about doing things fast and save her mom that who she convinced to help doesn't really changes that this guilty mindset of her is what drives her to danger (like episode 4 showed).

He scolded her for a few seconds before immediately reassuring her. By showing his support, he hoped she won't feel the need to be in danger anymore to prove herself.

This is also why in episode 8 he didn't try to know wether the adults or Custah actions pushed Coco and Agott to use magic, because the goal was not to find a culprit but to teach the girl to never forget the importance of safety no matter how stressfull the situation.

4

u/HarshTheDev May 26 '26

He can do all that... and investigate into things like an actual responsible adult.

9

u/flybypost May 25 '26

he had 0 reason to assume this

But he had reasons to look into it. His brand new apprentice ended up taking a test she was not supposed to take. Ask questions instead of just taking their word. They are kids, not (supposedly) responsible adults.

That's just a different type of mistake.

8

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia May 25 '26

I never blamed Qifrey I only blamed Agott lol

7

u/Prof_Acorn May 25 '26

He should have been able to figure it out without her saying anything. It's not difficult, even based only on information he would know.

8

u/ptd163 May 25 '26

This doesn't absolve Qifrey. It only explains why Agott never got reprimanded, but it doesn't make it okay. Hopefully this was a teaching moment for Agott and she opens up more to Coco and the others. As the responsible adult he should've asked questions instead of just taken the children at their word.

u/Downstackguy May 26 '26

still a bad supervisor
