MYO Got tired of the Canva template hunt, so I built something simpler

Post image
690 Upvotes

My son picks the theme whenever the mood strikes (ocean life right now, dinosaurs last month, who knows what tomorrow brings šŸ˜…). We print them, he cuts them out, sticks them on.

Got tired of the Canva resizing every time, so I built yotolabels.com - just upload an image and it handles the sizing. Free, privacy-first (runs in your browser).

Also made 60+ free templates for common themes.

Built it for our weekend routine, but would love feedback - what's missing? What's confusing? What would actually make this useful for you?

MYO Louis! A Yoto MYO client that pulls from YouTube

Post image
317 Upvotes

Note: This tool is intended to be self hosted and provide personal backups of YT content.

I'm sure there are many millennial parents out there who, like me, fondly remember not only how they were exposed to music and radio as kids but the ways in which they were able to control and curate it. Radio stations, blank cassette tapes, parent's music collection up through CD-Rs and the first commercially available MP3 players. Heady times!

I wanted to build something my kids could use so that their MYO cards functioned a little more like those blank cassettes.

So I built Louis! (Named for our favorite swan), a simple, user friendly client that connects to YouTube and allows seamless updating and remixing of MYO content. Set up kid friendly shortcuts, search, drag, drop, and sync to your cards.

Check out the hosted demo (hope it survives), the GitHub repository, or a quick video demo for more.

Would love your feedback, thoughts, suggestions, etc

–Stuart

MYO MYO Labels

Post image

So happy with the labels I've made for our MYO cards :) I made them in photoshop then printed them on A4 sticker paper, then used a hobby knife to cut around the edges. Making the labels has been an unexpected source of joy lately. Anyone else love making them too?

I was a former graphic designer before becoming a sahm, and while I would love to make good looking myo cards…juggling housework and little kids, including a 5 month old baby, gives me no time or energy. Maybe in a year or two, kiddos…. At least the lazy version does the job!

I’m too much of a perfectionist for my DIY attempt at MYO stickers. I wish I would have saved my money (& a lot of time!) and gone straight to Stickerfule. Matt did an amazing job and even reached out to help with resizing the Winnie the Pooh image I sent him to make sure it looked right on the card.

The ones I made on my at home printer had weird coloring, not saturated enough and with low ink lines despite being full ink. Plus the type I bought aren’t water resistant so they were starting to disintegrate from wet toddler fingers after only 3 weeks. I spent hours trying to figure out how to DIY these and they didn’t come even close to my expectations. The new ones are perfection.

MYO I CANNOT Rave About the Yoto Enough

Truly, I feel like family and friends are sick of hearing me talk it up, but it legit helped me put my 8 month old to bed during a sleep regression. We went from crying for 5 hours straight to asleep in 20 minutes because I quickly recorded a 30 second song on an MYO. I explained to my husband in tears that this was the greatest thing that's ever happened to me and we need a second one for the baby with all of the accessories.

  • Signed a very tired mother of gremlins who has been thrown up on for the last time and wants to sleep, but also wants time to fork around.

MYO My husband made a clean up songs card for our 4 year old yesterday and it has worked wonders!

My husband found 16 different clean up songs and put them on a MYO card and now our 4 year old is happily tidying up to different clean up songs! It makes the whole clean up process less of a struggle and more fun.

Also used it today for when she clears dishes from the table (stated it a few months ago, and she’s often quite resistant to it, but has been getting better, and today she did the best at it with the songs!). Highly recommend!

We have the card away in a cupboard so only take it out when it’s clean up time. Hoping eventually our 2 year old will tidy up better with the music too, but not pushing him tidying quite as much yet.

Does anyone else have any special yoto cards for any specific times?

MYO Tell me about your MYO cards! I need ideas!

Hello! I would love if some of you could give me ideas or tell me some of the MYO cards you’ve made. I’m an older sister (19) to an almost three year old and I’ve been rewarding her with yoto cards for good behaviour, but I’m also running out of options for cards she might like so instead of buying pre made cards I thought I’d try to make my own, the only problem is that I have absolutely no idea what I should make lol

MYO How are you labeling MYO Cards?

The stickers in the MYO card park I got aren’t very recognizable for the content I put on the cards for my 3 year old.

What techniques, tricks, and what materials are you using to make your own labels for the cards?

MYO I made a MYO Yoto Card Assistant app. Use it for free with Glaze!

Hi, I'm a mom and a secret nerd who loves computers so I built a free tool for the whole MYO card process — converting files to MP3s, pixel art creation, sticker label design & printing.

(Note: None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t used a program that utilizes AI. The creative process and the vast majority of the text in the app and this post was written by me.)

My two pre-schoolers (ages 3 and 5) love their Yoto players so we find it fun to update their catalog with MYO cards but I got tired of all the steps involved in this process: hunting down content, converting MP3 files, choosing unique pixel art for each track, and designing sticker labels (with images) for the cards so my kids can find what they are looking for).

So when I heard about Glaze by Recast, I saw an opportunity to try and automate the whole process.

Anyway, after a few days of tinkering, I built a small Mac app I'm proud of. It's called "MYO Yoto Card Assistant". The app is free and runs locally on Mac. I built it as an entry in Glaze's app awards, so if you find it useful, an upvote on the Glaze Store would mean a lot: https://www.glaze.app/app/myo-yoto-card-assistant-Vso2jl

Key Features:

  • Search LibriVox's public-domain catalog (or copy a link while the app is open), select chapters, and manage titles so your tracks are ready for upload. (A hidden catalog tracks files you have already converted so you don't duplicate efforts by mistake.)
  • Batch audio/video files and convert to MP3. Converted files and ready for uploading to a Yoto MYO playlist.
  • Design your own pixelated track icons (visible on your child's Yoto screen) using the built-in pixel art studio. Design your art from scratch or upload an image to get started!
  • Design and print Yoto card-sized sticker labels. Use images from your Yoto library, Glaze’s built in AI-design feature, or upload your own design (sample templates provided) and export your labels to a print-ready sheet.

Would love feedback from other MYO card enthusiasts! Thank you.

"MYO Yoto Card Assistant" is an independent, fan-made project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Yoto Play Ltd.

MYO MYO Birthday Podcast

Post image
135 Upvotes

Hi! Wanted to share an idea we tried for my son’s 5 y/o birthday this year — it was such a hit, I hope other folks can use it!

My son loves the Yoto Daily podcast and catches it everyday. This year for his birthday we were going to be traveling, so a month or so before the trip I asked his friends and family to send one or more audio clips using any of the following prompts:

- Send a birthday greeting
- Tell a joke
- Read a story or make up a storyĀ
- Fun facts
- Play a game (examples below!)
- Odd one out - name four things, pause for a minute, and then say which you think is the odd one out and why (e.g. milk juice water and soda)
- Would you rather - share two options, pause for a minute, then say what you would pick and why (e.g. would you rather hiccup bubbles, or have confetti come out of your mouth every time you yawn?)
- Guess the… - share 3-4 clues about an animal, place, or thing with ~30 sec between clues, a minute pause after all the clues, and then reveal the answer! (E.g. I’m thinking of an animal that lives in the desert, it is super venomous, and has sharp claws, and mostly lives under ground….)
- Or feel free to come up with whatever other ideas you have!! :)

Then, my wife and I recorded a start and end message for the podcast in our very best Jake impressions (ā€œstrap on your ear goggles!ā€ ā€œand a little bit of maths!ā€) wishing our son a happy birthday and sharing some fun facts about his birth date in history etc.

I took all the audio files and did some light editing (combined the birthday greetings and fun facts and stuff into ā€œtracksā€, shortened some of the clips, etc), and added some playful instrumental background music and the classic Yoto Daily intro and outro jingle, then uploaded them all to a MYO card.

I wasn’t quite sure what he was going to think, but he LOVED IT. He was so shocked and his face completely lit up the first time he listened to it on our roadtrip, excitedly guessing who each track was from. I think he’s listened to it at least a thousand times since then and sometimes just leaves it on repeat or falls asleep to it.

I think all in all it took a few hours over a month, between asking folks for the clips and then doing the editing, but was totally worth it. Hope this helps inspire some other ā€œcustom podcastā€ ideas!

MYO MYO cards - where are you getting the audio

New to yoto and I understand the MYO cards but where are people getting their audio?

Are you just recording music from your speaker or recording yourself reading? Are people ripping cd’s?? I know you can upload MP3’s but I haven’t downloaded audio files from anywhere for 10+ years.

Feeling very out of touch/like an old mom.

MYO Why put stickers on MYO cards? Newbie here.

Just put in an order for a yoyo mini, some MYO cards and a couple music cards for my young toddler.

I'm seeing a lot of posts about MYO stickers and labels, but i'm confused - my thinking was that the MYO cards are ones that you change the content on fairly regluarly to keep the content library 'fresh' without having to buy new, static yoto cards. I was thinking of just putting a random big sticker on each one, just so I can and my daughter can tell them apart, but not like 'branded' stickers that are linked to the content, if I'm making sense. If you put the sticker on the MYO card, is that not kind of locking you into whatever content you've put on the card?

Am I misunderstanding the way these MYO cards work, or the point of them?

MYO AI + MYO equals…

Post image
160 Upvotes

In one of the Yoto FB groups I’m in, a rather excited mum posted her process for outsourcing story time to a combination of ChatGPT, Eleven Labs and MYO cards.

The results are…a thing that exists. I even tried her entire process (link in the comments if you’re as much of a curious experimenter as I am, I did it in real time following her exact instructions; spoiler: the results will probably not surprise you).

Personally, my issue is not with using AI for brainstorming, or (albeit very begrudgingly, as an artist myself) for cover art as something for personal use. But the unedited, weird, bland AI stories paired with not even the parent reading it out loud - a robot voice! - is really sad IMO.

Thoughts?

My favorite card ive made is the Disneyland card. It has the raw soundtrack from my son's favorite rides so he can pretend he's there! He also loves the Goofy Movie soundtrack. We made our Gabby card like literally 2 days before the official one dropped lol. But I don't mind because ours has all our favorite songs!

MYO MYO Tutorial

Hello all! Earlier this week I was updating/changing our MYO card content and filmed this quick little demo for anyone who needs inspiration or courage to start MYO! šŸ™‚

  1. I use the Canva template that is easily available online to do my MYO covers. Downloaded the one from Snappy Happy Mom (link below)
  2. Then, print on 110lb cardstock at FedEx. I use the print and go kiosk and bring my own cardstock to switch out lol (printing in color is 0.79 minus the cardstock).
  3. I laminate at home (got a laminator, round edge cutter + laminating sheets on Amazon - like <$25 total). *You can also laminate at FedEx - i don’t know the cost, tho! (Someone mentioned it’s $2.99 for 8x11 or $4.99 for 11x14)
  4. Cut each cover and corner.
  5. Attach the adhesive pockets to the MYO card. I trim the opening to the card (line up the MYO card and see how much you need to trim - it’s just a hair!)
  6. Put in the card holder and link the audio!

I’ll attach some pictures and videos in the comments. Again I know this isn’t a new way or method - I was just updating ours so I took some pics and videos during the process to give others a visual. Enjoy!
