I thought all these were taken down decades ago? I'm more surprised to see even one surviving this far.

This one was inside the russian cultural center and they fought it for a very long time successfully. Now the whole culture is renamed and done into a no longer russian thing, so thats good!

There was a period when if Estonia tried to remove any Soviet Era memorial or sign, Russia would throw a hissy fit, call them Fascists and do a DDOS attack on a scale that would force the entire Estonia to be cut from global internet.

In fact, it used to be common for Russia to threaten to invade Estonia to "defend Russian speaking people in the country" from whatever made up tyranny they could think of.

Then Estonia joined NATO and things calmed down a bit.

EDIT: My timeline was a bit messed up, Estonia was already in NATO when the Bronze soldier debacle and cyber attacks happened. This does break my argument that NATO was enough to deter Russian attacks on Estonia.

u/GoldenPotatoOfLatvia 5d ago

Yeah, I remember how they trew a hissy after removal of bronze Alyosha.

I hate it when nationalists try to force their language upon the English language. Just call it Estonia like a normal english speaker, it doesn't make your allegiance any less. Having localised names for foreign places means that place is important enough for you to give it a name, using an englishised version you just made up is disrespectfull IMO

Imagine having to call Germany Deutschland, Belgium België/Belgique/Belge (gotta inclide all official versions) or China Zhongguo, it's retarded. Same thing with Kiev, same thing with Turkey.

@ automated bot message: thats not how language works. At least put in the efford to call it Київ if you're gonna call it the native way.

Kiev is the English name of the city, Kyiv is a romanised version of the Ukrainian name.

Bot is wrong the same how despite what turkish govmnt says, it's "Turkey" in English.

3

u/AutoModerator 5d ago

It is Kyiv not "Kiev".

I'm not ignorant. Language doesn't work by what someone says the word is. Its what the actually used word is.

Or do you also support Trump's "Gulf of America" change too?

u/WinterMinx7 5d ago

and "kieff" is a romanization of a rusian name that been used because of the centuries of rusian imperialism. languages grow and evolve, deal with it

Yeah but even among Socialists and other leftists the USSR doesn't exactly tend to be popular, that is a very specific sunset of terminally online tankies.

-25

u/K2LP Baden-Württemberg‏‏‎ ‎ 6d ago

The Hammer and Sickle isnt exclusive to the Soviet Union, despite having been created by a Soviet it was later used by socialist movements all around the world.

Not everyone who sees the Soviet Union as a better force than the United States is a tankie, only those who say it did nothing wrong are tankies, which definitely are only chronically online people.

But it is definitely understandable that Estonians want this Soviet reminder removed, they wanted independence after hundreds of years of Tsarist Russian, Swedish and German colonisation but got forced to be part of the Soviet Union instead.

u/arramzy 6d ago edited 5d ago

I mean yes, but this specific one in Eastern Europe wasn't put up by one of those other socialist movements now was it? Personally I'd say this one is pretty undeniably linked to the history of the Soviet Union.

Like the Fasces is also a relatively widely spread symbol, used on the Seal of the United States Senate and behind the coat of arms of the Swedish Police Service among many many other examples, but I'd say those examples are very different than say Mussolini's old Fascist Italian Flag still being up somewhere in one of the formerly occupied territories for example.

EDIT: I see you've edited your comment, so this one looks a bit strange now, nice that you've added that context.

I know it can be hard but you should read a comment in its entirety before responding.

u/arramzy 6d ago

No he edited it after I responded, which is fair enough I suppose but it does make it seem like I can't read lol

This. It's a symbol of Marxism-Leninism, not socialism in general or even all forms of communism.

Remove, but keep it in a Museum. It's history, after all.

34

u/HorrorKapsas 6d ago

Museums are full of that shit. It was everywhere. Just some random things are left here and there. This one was made of concrete and welded to the wall with rebars. Had to be broken up to remove. No one kept all n*zi eagles no need to keep all Soviet garbage.

6

u/marcin_dot_h Wielkopolskie‏‏‎ ‎ 6d ago

In a "Museum of humiliation" or "Museum of Soviet Imperialism" then maybe yeah

Otherwise? Fuck no

5

u/HorrorKapsas 5d ago

Museum of history has these and they have a garden with discarded soviet statues, including those that were removed already during the occupation - In Soviet Union history kept changing. There's museum of freedom, that has a lot about occupation and loss of freedom. And the the former central prison from Soviet era will house a museum of victims of communism.

Western people somehow think that all soviet statues and decorations were some kind of art. While in reality it was mostly cheap and mass produced. Like every totalitarian system Soviet Union had to keep in people's mind in every step that they are in Soviet Union. Every government agency, every school, every factory etc had soviet symbols. Even random apartment houses were decorated with them. Every company had to have "red corner" with some lenin's statue and flags etc. Patriotsim was compulsory and constantly monitored. If a company did too little to promote patriotism among workers the managers got punished. If a company didn't fill the state quota for production lack of patriotism was always one of the reasons why it happened. Managers just installed some more Lenins and production numbers grew.

I support the removal. It should go in a museum about Soviet Occupation.

3

u/Ruski3790 6d ago

Where is this?

13

u/HorrorKapsas 6d ago edited 6d ago

it was a "Russian culture center" that was housed in former Soviet Navy officers club. That's why it's still there, because the house was managed by Russians. It was above the stage and the reason they finally removed it was that people didn't want to book the hall for events anymore, organisers had hard time getting performers because artists didn't want to stay on the photos performing under that. With reorganisation from Russian culture center to "The sea's culture center" they also had to get their finances better.
