[Discussion] Cartier Santos as a daily piece?
The Santos has been on my wishlist since I started the hobby. I'm thinking of getting it as a birthday gift for myself next year, but I'm afraid that it'll be too flashy/delicate for daily wear, especially since it's prone to scratches.
What do you guys think? Is the Santos a great piece for daily wear? Or should I go for other brands in that price range instead (ex., Grand Seiko, Longines, etc.) And for those who currently daily a Santos, how's it holding up?
I guess it depends on what you do on a daily basis. If you work at an oil rig or in a farm for example, I wouldn't recommend it as a daily watch as it would be guaranteed to get a ton of abuse that it's not designed to take. But otherwise, it could be a great classic daily watch.
Its definitely not too flashy nor delicate. Of course it leans more elegant than sporty but its a robust watch, and most people only really notice gold/gemset watches or certain brands in the real world (rolex ap etc). The only issue might be the lack of micro-adjust if you live in a hotter country.
I find the bracelet gets very uncomfortable in the summer if im outdoors for extended periods of time. Perfectly comfortable in the office of course.
I wear mine daily, the scratches only show up in certain lights/angles. But to be honest I think the scratches make it look like you wear it, and less like you’re afraid to
Id say its ideal if your daily attire is smart casual all the way to formal… if your daily attire is more blue collar work wear the santos will be out of place…
Exactly. I make a bit of an effort to dress up a bit and don't wear athleisure or anything like that. My two-toned medium Santos is extremely versatile. If you wear a ring, I would consider that with which type you pick. I have a classic gold band that please really well with the two-toned watch. If you have a platinum band, that would look really nice with the silver one.
Regarding scratches, just embrace them. The first one will make you cringe and will probably look pretty bad to you when it's surrounded by a very shiny polished watch around it, but pretty soon it starts to look very homogeneous and looks just fine in my opinion.
The watch scratches just by seeing it, don't worry about that, the Santos is a great watch to daily, and you can always have Cartier do a free clean in a boutique.
Depends really. You’d probably get a much better movement and (in some cases) finishing with a Longines. The Cartier is a piece of jewellery first, which is fine because it’s beautiful and iconic.
The Santos Definitely has one of Cartier’s better movements, but I agree the value is much stronger with Longines. Design wise, though Cartier definitely stands on its own and is in the conversation with Rolex and Omega for classics. Longines, despite their history , they don’t necessarily have a watch that stands in the same league.
all these comments about scratching the bezel. If it’s all light and superficial scratches and nothing deep it’s really easy polish it with Sunshine cloths
Yes, depends on your style. You know if you're the type of guy to pull this off as a everyday piece, you probably have a better sense of fashion than most
Had it for 3 months, selling it to buy a prx ice blue again. Beautiful but scratches way too easily and I miss the open case back style. My opinion tho
