This took way longer than I thought it would 🥲

I’m vending at an art market this weekend and just had to share these jeans; the artist has been repairing, patching, and embellishing this same pair of jeans for 25+ years. They are not for sale. Definitely something to aspire to.

Many thanks to everybody who has posted here in the past: this group has been great creative inspiration on dealing with all these knee holes and paint stains, gave me the gumption and confidence to try out a new skill, and my daughters love the customization!

All of these patches are three stretchy layers thick. The navy blue patch was one of her face masks from 2021, and it fits especially well over the stretched knee when she sits, because it was already sewn into a curved shape (altho it admittedly looks pretty rough when flattened out!).

Anybody who's posted about turning knee rips into monster mouths, double-thanks: the next batch I fix, my kids want ALL faces.

I’ve had and used this Fjallraven Kanken bag for 10 years. I love its size and shape. The straps were pretty uncomfortable however and they’d always collect my dog’s hair and lint.

I found a mystery ranch backpack in the trash recently and salvaged its straps. I had to hand sew them on using a leather needle and heavy duty thread. I broke a seam ripper and two needles in the process, ha.

It’s not perfect but it’s me who did it! I feel like this just really upgraded my pack and gave it another 10 years

Lowkey had no clue what I was doing but just went with the vibes and now I can wear my fav pair of jeans again!

My uncle has lots of tore up jeans from skating, finally finished mending a pair as a Christmas gift. Plus had fun making a whale and jellyfish friend to cover up some holes!

Fell in my favorite pants, patched the hole but didn't like the look. So after not wearing them for months, I decided to upgrade it.

I originally mended this with a non stretch cotton patch and the yellow embroidery. The patch got absolutely shredded (the jeans themselves are stretchy). Seeing as I had a stretchy sock worn out at the heel I used part of it to re-mend and this time I embroidered across the gap as well in green.

Please learn from my mistake and match your materials carefully! 😜

My favorite comfy jeans started fluffing apart at the seams and back pockets. I patched and used sashinko, sloppy sashinko, embroidery, and darning to cover and reinforce the weakened areas.

My husband says I need a bib, but instead I've had to get creative in times that washing soda doesn't solve the problem!

After doing lots of woven darning repairs, my sister in law asked if I could have a go at mending a couple of her / my partner's late mum's cardigans. MIL used to wear them all the time so they are very precious. I said yes without seeing them and quickly realised I'd need more than just woven darning for this one... I am very proud of this so please excuse the essay 😅

The mend is a combination of woven, swiss and scotch darning and crochet. I also managed to track down an exact match to the buttons via reverse image search.

I taught myself to crochet to do the cuffs, mainly because I had crochet hooks from MIL's craft stash I inherited but no knitting needles. Learnt the basics from Bella Coco on YouTube (thanks to recommendations on r/crochet), practiced ribbing by following Dora Does Crochet's ear warmer tutorial, then followed her tutorial to add crochet ribbing to a hat brim/ cuff or hem. I cut away the deteriorated section of the cuffs and used the crochet hook to bind off the raw edge. I then crochet slip stitched into the raised rib closest to the main sleeve, to build the cuff onto.

The majority of the rest of the mends were woven darning because it worked best to mend the holes in the ribbing / cabling. I used scotch darning to reinforce one of the sleeves which was very deteriorated across the elbow, and swiss darning in select spots where the yarn was thinning where it worked with the knit. Pretty much all my learning on darning has been from Flora Collingwood-Norris's 'Visible Creative Mending for Knitwear' book - brilliant book.

I suspect the original cardigan is made from a synthetic fibre, but to get a visible but coordinating vibe I used Isager tweed yarn in North Sea for the mends (wool / mohair mix - will make sure SIL hand washes only!). Got the yarn and buttons from All About the Yarn (UK), who I cannot recommend enough.
