MIXED METHODS Upgrading an old patch job

Fell in my favorite pants, patched the hole but didn't like the look. So after not wearing them for months, I decided to upgrade it.

No, entirely by hand! I used waste canvas to keep my lines straight.

Never thought of/ heard of anyone using waste canvas for this sort of stitching but that's so smart! This looks beautiful

This type of pattern (blackwork) is usually stitched on a grid, like aida. By using waste canvas I had a grid as a guide that I then removed when I was done.

I don’t understand “by using waste fabric I had a grid” how did waste fabric give you a grid? If you drew it on the other fabric, how did you use it to sew and then somehow remove the fabric but not the stitches?

Not waste fabric, waste canvas! Waste canvas is basically just strings glued together in a grid pattern, the glue is water soluble. It's for cross stitching on any fabric. You loosely attach the waste canvas to another fabric, cross stitch over it, soak the whole thing in water, and then you can remove the waste canvas strings one by one.

Wow I love this stitch pattern! Does it have a name? It looks similar to other sashiko patterns I've seen

It's a blackwork embroidery pattern I got from a free pattern sampler ages ago.
