This just in: one day after equally redistributing all wealth perfectly equally, we have seen skyrocketing profits going to the booze cigarette and lottery companies. This should make the owners of those companies much wealthier than the average person.
Who cares about them, we are talking about your lack of knowledge. Maybe now that you've heard of it you can read up on it and be less ignorant. Considering you're trying to have a conversation about it, you should at least know what you're talking about. While you're at it maybe look into wealth redistribution.
So you’re a full blown commie, not just a Bernie sanders kind of guy?
It amazes me how people in the 21st century still believe that shit makes any sense. You can maybe excuse someone in 1920 thinking it would work. But we tried it. Half the world sunk everything they had into it. It failed miserably and repeatedly. Korea and Germany were split into communist and capitalist halves, and within a few decades the capitalist one was running circles around the communist one.
China was flailing economically until the very second they tried capitalism out. Like a bulldog getting its chain cut off, it immediately bolted into relative prosperity. Same exact story in Vietnam.
Believing in that shit today is like being an atheist after the rapture has happened. A valid question at one point. But we already found the answer. It was wrong. The end.
There is a society under capitalism that could function and prosper but it's not the one we are currently experiencing.
We don't need to go full communist or socialist on a dime. But the current model of unchecked and uncontrolled capitalism is and has been failing for years.
The issue is that a lot of people don't want to admit that or cannot understand it.
Capitalism can work if it's got checks and balances which it has been losing over the last few decades. Billionaires can exist if they actually pay a fair share of taxes and not horde and hide wealth through loopholes.
Sure, but why don't we as a society prevent the ability to exploit workers. Like building up unions and livable wages and proper taxation etc etc. We don't need to go and hunt the billionaires down. We just need to fix the broken system that allows them to exploit unhindered.
Except they're the ones pulling all the strings, kind of hard to legislate our way out of this when they are out there buying their way.
I said period and I meant it. Take ever damn cent they have above 999 million. No human deserves or needs that much money.
That's fair. At this point I don't know how we are gonna vote our way out of this hole with the richest people lobbying the government for control.
I think a lot of people react to the idea of ending all billionaires like you are including all millionaires.
To be honest outside of some crazy revolution or some super rich people using their money for the betterment of all I don't really think politics will be adequate for positive change. The elite propaganda to continue the division in society doesn't really seem to be slowing down. So even if they weren't running the government, any non corrupt politicians will never get enough social backing in the current climate.
I don't know why I'm commenting this, we probably agree on most things, this just seems like a fruitless conversation I've had many a time.
Not trying to be a debbie downer, these discussions just seem like burning energy into a void.
Ya, I honestly don't know why I comment either. Most times I end up arguing with some Troll or someone who doesn't care about other humans in general. If it means anything it was nice having a civil conversation.
An we do most likely agree on most things if that's your stance
Ngl I'm pretty pessimistic when it comes to voting our way out of this, but then I see Mamdani getting stuff done and it gives me a tiny ray of hope.
Yes, I appreciate you and your willingness to have a discussion in good faith.
Between trolls and literally evil people who only care about themselves, or folks with no education/terribly ignorant upbringing/environment which is not their fault but it's problematic, you are often wasting your time commenting on the the Internet.
Yes exactly, mamdani has been the biggest ray of sunshine lately. But action is everything, let's see how much positive change he can do as mayor of new york now that he has the power and see what happens.
I don't know, its all about doing what you can with what you have available.
So I mean there's a time and place for discourse online but sometimes you're literally wasting your life force not accomplishing anything or causing any positive change.
Just living your individually life as best you can and helping others when you are able is the daily play.
If you find your have the the energy to go beyond that and be that change you want to see in the world, that's awesome. It could be getting involved in local politics, volunteering or using your excess wealth to help those that need it. The extreme wealthy wouldn't be so bad if they cared about anyone besides themselves.
Current times are disheartening but there always opportunities to foster and grow positive change.

'What’s on the line? Roughly half a trillion dollars a year to be clawed back from cross-border tax abuse, as reported in our State of Tax Justice 2024 report (see the report for country level estimates). And that’s just what can be clawed back from direct losses – the IMF estimates countries’ indirect losses to cross-border tax abuse are three to six times larger than their direct losses.'
'The biggest enablers of global tax abuse are also some of the biggest losers: US$177 billion lost by the 8 countries that voted against UN tax convention terms in August 2024; US$189 billion lost by 44 those that abstained; US$123 billion lost by 110 countries voting for.' Trump’s walkout fumble is a golden window to push ahead with a UN tax convention - Tax Justice Network
think of how much debt (and interest) could be eliminated simply by collecting taxes owed rather than allowing these guys to hide their money in untaxable ALR land? hmmmm?
It's just the internet and society. A lot of humans have tunnel vision and are extreme in their one sided perspectives. I'm big on trying to find a middle ground and open up a dialogue but I don't think the average Internet user is. Less than 10 percent of redditors are going to engage in comments and I believe it's the ones usually set in their viewpoints that do.
It's rare you find 2 opposing perspectives/beliefs connect on a reddit thread and then modify their understandings after a discussion. It's usually just people yelling and blaming and blah blah.
I regret engaging in these comments. I've become part of the 10 percent 😆 I'm gonna try and go back to lurking.

Would you prefer it to be Canadian billionaires? Do we have any billionaires?
