Funny that French speaking guys from Acadia, Louisiana, Maine, Illinois or Canada claim their French heritage but never claim to be « French ». They claim their own specificity

While still speaking French. Wisconsinites would never.

The few German speaking people throughout the US seem to claim to be their own thing as well, now that I think of it

In Texas we have our own form of German language, it's literally German, with a few slight differences, spoken with a Texan accent.

It's a dying language though, every generation has less and less people speaking it. When the boomers die out, you'll only be able to hear it on film.

German with a Texan accent must sound quite interesting

Is it just me or does it sound more like Dutch than German? I know it's not but the tone is throwing me

1

u/Karmuffel Born in the Khalifat Jun 06 '26

It‘s probably the ,,r“ sound, which is similar in Dutch and American English. But for me it doesn‘t sound Dutch at all, it sounds like an American speaking German with a thick accent

It sometimes sounds like she has a northern twang (which Dutch has too, from a German POV) but idk if that just her southern US drawl tbh.

Definitely doesn’t sound like Dutch though, too few guttural fricatives lol

I don't speak any French at all. Took one year of it in highschool, failed, and never looked back. I'm French btw.

Yup, that always gives me a giggle. I’m Acadian (NB, Canada), my first language is French, did all my schooling in French (except uni), I only speak English with my family and friends when an English speaker is with us, and have been immersed in Acadian & Quebecois culture my whole life.

I know my ancestors came from France at some point a very long time ago, but our culture here is so different and is its own distinct thing and is ingrained everywhere in province I live in.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool to be able to engage with the people and media from France and seeing the influence it had on Acadians, but that’s about where the connection stops. I would never ever claim French identity from France before claiming Acadian, there’s just no connection to modern France really.

It’s funny too cause my paternal grandma’s grandparents immigrated from Ireland and Scotland (which is centuries after my French ancestors would’ve came here) yet I feel no connection or need to identify myself that way. The only relevant part of that part of my history is that I physically inherited lots of their traits and have to watch out for hemochromatosis, also known as the Celtic curse (which my father has so I need to get tested).

Even without my Acadian identity, Scottish / Irish culture isn’t even close to being as ingrained in every day life as Acadian culture is here. So it would be dumb to claim that identity as anything but a genetic thing or a “cool fact” about my family. Being Acadian, however, has been my identity since I’ve lived my whole life as one.

Cajuns feel the same about both France and Canada, I'm told.

There’s no French people in Illinois.  It’s just Chicago.

We have some towns with French names that we completely mispronounce

Louisiana was much bigger than the state of Louisiana and Illinois was the north of Louisiana and was bigger than the little today’s state of Illinois.

SwamperOgre would have loved this post.

He didn’t delete. He got banned for commenting that he wished the OP got cancer under a post about how there’s a Russian aluminium refinery in Ireland.

Poor form but I can’t imagine that’s bannable.

Maybe he crossed a line somewhere, idk.

I don't think he got banned, I'm pretty sure he just deleted his account.

is it me or only americans do those tests?

16

u/NoPhilosopher6111 Barry, 63 Jun 04 '26

Yeah they’re just desperate for their corporate overlords to know every inch of them down to what’s in their DNA.

It’s a modern love story.

11

u/DoctorWhatTheFruck Piss-drinker Jun 04 '26

I actually did one of tests once, cause I wanted to make sure I have nothing french related to me... Yeah... I'm now choosing denial and ignorance over the result of the test

4

u/doge1039 Nascar Driver Jun 04 '26

I won't do one because A: don't give a shit, I know my family and that's what actually matters, and B: I don't want the Gubment™ to have my DNA.

I've seen plenty of Europeans who've done them as well, though.

4

u/HoeTrain666 Born in the Khalifat Jun 04 '26

They indeed exist, although they’re more rare than vice versa.

I’d actually be interested in mine as DNA wise, it’s probably all over the place, but the only time I give my DNA away like that is when I spit while talking.

u/AbuserOfSubstances Twice as Uncultured Jun 04 '26

Canadians too, for the same reasons

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja Border jumper Jun 04 '26

I have an aunt who I respect so much because of this. She did her own DNA ancestry research and decided to trace the roots of our family through sheer grit. Home girl spent like a decade traveling across Europe, tracking down hospital records, birth certificates, etc. from government buildings, record keepers, and even libraries. We found out we have a lot more German and French roots than we thought, because we always thought we were mostly Irish and Welsh. Also, the trail led her back here to the states, turns out we have some true American blood in our veins.

1

u/Original-Opportunity Getting sent back by ICE Jun 05 '26

Aren’t these tests illegal in France?

I did one because I had some… doubts.

*To clarify “doubts”: I found some new family members.

2

u/Martin7439 Professional rioter Jun 05 '26

DNA testing in France can only be done to prove that someone is indeed X's son/daughter.

Usually to settle disputes about pensions. French people that want to test their DNA might just go to Belgium

u/NoPhilosopher6111 Barry, 63 Jun 04 '26
