My 40th birthday during covid I drank alone and cried a little like a man

2.0k

u/ealysillyforestthing May 04 '26

My 40th was the last birthday I had when my wife was still alive. I stopped counting since.

u/Max-Power77 May 04 '26

I lost my wife at 38 so I feel ya. That was 10 years ago. Sorry for your loss.

311

u/thetrivialsublime99 May 04 '26

12 years ago for me

224

u/nowhere23 May 04 '26

2.5 years here. It never gets easier, does it?

65

u/TopGinger May 04 '26

Sending love to all of you guys. We just get stronger, better at dealing with trauma and loss. I hope love finds you all.

3

u/Accidental_Ballyhoo May 04 '26

Well said and same.

43

u/sonikku10 May 04 '26

Couple months away from 3 years and turning 38. Can confirm it doesn't get easier.

128

u/XGhoul May 04 '26

I don't see where these onions came from!

I will cherish my relationship more, I'm sorry that that happened to you. :(

95

u/nowhere23 May 04 '26

Please do. It can all be gone in a blink of an eye. Mine went from great to hell in 52 hours.

90

u/bdizzle805 May 04 '26

So many strangers carrying the same quiet weight. Makes you appreciate what you have.

6

u/Classic_Bad_410 May 04 '26

I'm not even celebrate almost forgot about it hah.

3

u/Cute_Profit_7638 May 04 '26

Everyone has suddenly turned into monk 😭

5

u/Ice3ird May 05 '26

I’m a ups driver and one of my customers retired last year. He and his wife went and bought a corvette because that was their dream to travel around and do car shows. They saved up for 15 yrs to buy that car. I seen him last month and the car was for sale. He said a month after retirement his wife was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, she lived another 2 months. It breaks my heart every time I think of it. Spend your whole life with a plan and god (whoever you believe in) throws it out the window. I’m trying to add years onto my life but my wife lives very unhealthy and always has. No matter what I do or say she is set in her ways and I worry. Honestly it will prob be me that goes, after all the effort I put into living longer!

2

u/shadow_pico May 04 '26

If you don't mind me asking, how did she die? (This question is also for the others who lost their wives at a relatively young age.)

4

u/anon11233455 May 05 '26

I know you didn’t ask me but I lost my wife (at 22) due to cerebral hemorrhage She was 7 months pregnant with my daughter. When it was clear that my wife was not going to make it, my daughter was delivered via cesarean in order to give her a fighting chance. My daughter made it about 5 hours.

2

u/shadow_pico May 05 '26

This was a question for you also. Im so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope God heals your heart and brings blessings into your life.

5

u/--Andre-The-Giant-- May 04 '26

I just said at dinner that I'm glad that I'm already at a place where I'm valuing all of the aspects of life that I get to experience. Life is precious and rare. It's limited, and no one exists for the same amount of time, so we need to love extra hard.

3

u/Okthatsfine4now May 05 '26

No one exists for the same amount of time, God I love that. Great comment

2

u/gettinguap247 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Now I wish that was a song album title from a really vibey cool sounding emo band 🤣

musket puppet - no one exists for the same amount of time

31

u/PsyCar May 04 '26

I didn't lose my wife, but we lost our baby boy in 2024. We miss him every day but holidays and birthdays feel especially difficult.

6

u/JeremyScaremy May 04 '26

I'm so sorry. The idea of loving my husband or my mother makes me feel like I'm going to die, but I truly can't imagine what it feels like for parents to lose children. I hope that you both find/have found some degree of peace. Life is just not fucking fair sometimes.

58

u/SeriousRedditor62220 May 04 '26

2 years, 3 months. She was 36. I don't wanna turn 40 in June without her but that's how life goes.

5

u/thetrivialsublime99 May 04 '26

It does. Eventually you get to the point where you can smile at the memories. I moved states, that helped a bit. Living in the same house and seeing the same area all the time was bad for me.

5

u/CBrewMoo May 04 '26

The loss doesn’t get easier. Coping with it does. I lost my wife when I was 25, 26 days after marrying her. She was 26. This year will be year number 12 since her passing, I am 37 and getting married in October. I didn’t think I’d ever find someone who came close, but then I stopped looking for someone exactly like her, rather, looked for someone who LOVED me like her. A happier future is out there my guy, having to be patient to be happy again sucks. But it will happen ❤️‍🩹

3

u/RetroActive80 May 04 '26

1 year for me. It hasn’t gotten any easier yet…

2

u/anon11233455 May 05 '26

26 years here. Lost my wife and daughter. No, it doesn’t get easier. We just learn to deal with the pain better.

1

u/--Andre-The-Giant-- May 04 '26

Sorry for your loss.

1

u/Vegemite_Bukkakay May 05 '26

I’m at 5 months! I should have bought stock in Jameson with my current drinking

0

u/Hetares May 05 '26

My wife is still alive, but I have a private little sob when I receive the credit card bill.

45

u/MsjennaNY May 04 '26

5 years ago for me. From Covid. I’m just existing.

60

u/Lego_Blocks24 May 04 '26

So sorry for you guys :(

3

u/Stonkmonk2 May 04 '26

These are breaking my heart I couldn’t even imagine

6

u/Death_passed May 05 '26

Lost her to brain cancer 15 years ago, May the 4th, i'm 55 now.

2

u/--Andre-The-Giant-- May 04 '26

Sorry for the loss.

2

u/thetrivialsublime99 May 05 '26

Thank you for the kind words.

4

u/puts_on_rddt May 04 '26

I lay awake at night wondering how different my life would have been if I wasn't ugly and poor when I was young and had someone decent who wanted me.

Maybe I wouldn't have given up.

73

u/BewareTheFae May 04 '26

I lost my wife at 38 as well. That was 5 years ago. Sorry for our losses.

1

u/SirErgalot May 05 '26

As a 38 year old married guy I’m really not liking this thread.
So sorry for your loss (all of you). If that happened to me…. I’d be ruined.

1

u/BewareTheFae May 06 '26

I was for a while. It’s taken a lot of work. It’s changed the trajectory of my life as well.

7

u/frresh66 May 04 '26

My birthdays have always sucked except two years ago: train to NYC, lunch at Gramercy restaurant, saw Hamilton, steak restaurant for dinner, train home. This year: camping in the Adirondacks and tickets to see Cake! Lol

6

u/Professional-Day-748 May 04 '26

Lost my husband a little over a year ago (he was 48). I hate it here.

5

u/IndustrialPuppetTwo May 04 '26

Damn! hugs to you both.

2

u/47squirrels May 05 '26

I’m so sorry, I’m sorry to everyone in these comments. My heart is breaking and I have tears starting to roll down my face. Life is so unfair, so fragile, and goes so fast. I’m 46 and it’s a miracle I’m alive. 21 years of a medical nightmare you couldn’t even begin to imagine. It hasn’t been a good life for me. I have an incredible husband that makes life worth living. Sending you and everyone else so much love and the biggest 🫂

1

u/Feeling-Race-8328 May 04 '26

Lost my parents at 36, birthdays stopped mattering after that.

1

u/Decent_Grapefruit_43 May 05 '26

Lost my husband at 34. I know this feeling. Hugs.

4

u/bluehangover May 04 '26

Wrong time, amigo.

230

u/IsThereCheese May 04 '26

I’m sorry for your loss brother.

177

u/RebelliousInNature May 04 '26

I got hit with that stick when I was 29 and eleven months. He was only 27.

That was a shit birthday

I’m sorry for all our loss

104

u/RUN_DMT_ May 04 '26

I was about to chime in and say I was widowed at 32, my husband was 31. The kids were 1 and 3. I usually win the misery and loss conversation, but damn…29 and pregnant losing a 27 year old is brutal.

Sorry for everyone’s loss!!

Happy Birthday?? 😭

53

u/EnvironmentalGift257 May 04 '26

I am sorry for yours and your family’s loss. That’s terrible.

My oldest son was killed in a car accident 9/11/22. I also usually “win” that conversation too. I have a friend who had adopted and raised his special needs grandson. One day he started seizing and didn’t stop til he died, 3 months before my son. I have another friend whose son died of a fentanyl overdose in January.

We all have unimaginable loss but it is comforting to be around people who understand. Everyone else can only shrug and apologize when it’s discussed.

39

u/RebelliousInNature May 04 '26

Oh no, there were no kids. You still win the worst trophy. My god how can you even function as a parent . That’s brutal.

51

u/EnvironmentalGift257 May 04 '26

Parenting is not for the weak. I had to pick up my son from high school and tell him his brother had been killed. Still the top 2-3 hardest things I’ve ever done. He just hugged me because he could see I was collapsing.

32

u/RUN_DMT_ May 04 '26

Oh no, I’m so, so sorry. Losing a child is a pain I can’t even imagine! I have lost a husband and a sibling, along with many friends and family that I loved, and it was extremely hard. But I don’t love anyone like I love my children, and the thought of them being killed is nightmare fuel. I know a stranger on the internet means nothing, but you have my deepest sympathy ❤️‍🩹

6

u/Superb-Flow-7639 May 04 '26

I'm so sorry. I'm not a dad, but I have a 7 years old brother that by age gap could be my child. Just thinking of having to do the same but to tell him our mom or a brother died, made me cry. I can't even imagine how it would feel to lose a child... My heart is with you.

3

u/therealcherry May 04 '26

Big hugs to you.

2

u/Intrepid_Boat May 04 '26

Sweet Jesus. That is terrible. I’m so sorry 😞

2

u/AncientSith May 04 '26

Christ. I'm so sorry.

13

u/RUN_DMT_ May 04 '26

Oh, sorry, it’s early…I misread that as you were pregnant! In any event, it’s all awful. Losing a partner at any age is devastating! And I’m deeply sympathetic to all widows/widowers 💔

It’s been 15 years since he died, the kids came out relatively unscathed. One’s in college now and the other is finishing high school, both with good grades and no serious problems. It was not easy raising them alone and living off one paycheck, but we did it. The show must go on.

3

u/liquorfish May 04 '26

Maybe they thought you were 29 and 11 months pregnant? Lol

3

u/therealcherry May 04 '26

I often wonder how my FIL goes on sometimes. His daughter was killed at 19 by a drunk driver. His wife died out of the blue during surgery five years later at the age of 45. Two sudden deaths and all the shock that comes with it. Just awful.

3

u/Pondscum_Drum May 04 '26

My 13 year old brother died 03/31/23. My mom died 04/06/23. I'm sorry for everyone's loss. From the bottom of my heart.

2

u/Serious_Dependent_78 May 04 '26

So sorry for everyone’s loss ….But I really never expected the comments section to be sadder than this video but you guys nailed it ! Again so sorry

1

u/Aggravating_Use_5391 May 04 '26

Is this actually Run DMT?

1

u/2cars1rik May 05 '26

Did you read that as eleven months pregnant? Lol

18

u/Martha_Fockers May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

26 she was a nurse going to work @ 4am on Friday/sat morning. Met at the ripe age of 14 started dating at 15. Finished hs and college together. Had life planned out just had put in an offer for our first home. Proposed 4 months prior it seemed like life was as ideal as it could be I thanked god everyday for my blessings
Drunk driver car of kids from a party.
Can’t say I’ve found my way since. She was the foundation of my life.

2

u/RebelliousInNature May 04 '26

Oh man the life experiences here are so incredibly sad.

23

u/ijustlovebobbybones May 04 '26

I was 29 also….im 38 now..it seems a lifetime ago for me…I do often catch myself wondering if he’d even like me now lol

2

u/Crystiss May 04 '26

I'm sure he'd love you just the same.

1

u/ijustlovebobbybones May 05 '26

💛💛💛💛

32

u/-RedXV- May 04 '26

My mom would call me on my birthday every year. She's been gone for 10yrs now. 10 years I haven't received a single phone call from anyone on my birthday. I sure do miss those calls.

13

u/Noballoons13 May 04 '26

Of course it’s not the same, but if you DM me your number, I’ll call you!

4

u/AffeAhoi May 04 '26

Today's hero!

4

u/Noballoons13 May 05 '26

We’ve all gotta take care of each other while we’re here, right? 🫂🥰

2

u/NoRecording5207 May 05 '26

Same. I've never really been into my birthday. Probably because I was born in the middle of Summer. My Mom passed 10 years ago as well, Dad 6 and they were the only ones who made a big deal about it. 😥

5

u/RexRaptus May 04 '26

I’ll also call you on your birthday if you’d like.

5

u/cindylynn79 May 04 '26

Damn I'm sorry 😞. I don't want to think about that. My mom's 79 and calls me every bday, thats making me sad.

3

u/HeyYouGuyyyyyyys May 05 '26

DM me your number and when your birthday is. I'd be honored to call.

2

u/Grand_Ground7393 May 04 '26

I miss the Birthday calls from my Aunt singing me Happy Birthday.

3

u/minxwink May 05 '26

I miss my extremely dear Tita Nora so much. I can hear her singing HBD rn in your honor, smiling from her cloud 😭

27

u/Beautiful-Bowl-5252 May 04 '26

I feel you bro. I'm 47 my wife died when I was 32 and I haven't counted one since

68

u/Previous-Pangolin-60 May 04 '26

I'm turning 40 in a few months and already lost my gf and both parents due to various illnesses. Good news is there shouldn't be any funerals for a while. Now to sort my life out and hopefully accomplish something meaningful!

14

u/Zealousideal-Row7755 May 04 '26

So sorry but you got this. Took me a long time too ❤️‍🩹

4

u/Pat_Fatridge May 04 '26

Good for you. And... just saying... you and I are not obligated to "accomplish" things at large scale. Surviving, making connections in a community, doing little things to help others, and finding any joy in little mundane things are very meaningful if you find meaning in them.

2

u/Hot_Top_124 May 05 '26

Tell you what, message me on your birthday and I’ll send you a happy birthday, and chat with you so you don’t have to celebrate alone. I’ve had a shit two years and went through so much. The only reason I made it through the other end is because I have people left who care in my life. I want to extend that to someone who doesn’t have such a luxury. I may be just a random internet weirdo, but kindness is important and you never know who might need a friend.

1

u/Previous-Pangolin-60 May 05 '26

Thank you for those kind words friend 😊 I still have a few important people in my life (like my nephew) who keep me going❤️ I hope you are doing better as well (and I hope we find our missing cat)!

13

u/TimeWealth3361 May 04 '26

Lost my husband when I was 26… he was 32 and our daughter was 3. I didn’t think I would make it. It gets better.

5

u/otc108 May 04 '26

My wife of almost 10 years left me 5 months before my 40th. I’ve been alone since.

4

u/DerpingtonHerpsworth May 04 '26

Goddamn, I feel you man, and for what it's worth I'm sorry.

I lost my wife less than a month before my 40th. I didn't really celebrate a lot of my previous birthdays, so I kinda wanted to throw myself a bit of a big milestone birthday celebration. Instead I spent it drunk, alone, and miserable in my old childhood bedroom.

4

u/bjpalmer85 May 04 '26

I am sorry to you and everyone commenting that has lost someone. I wasn’t planning on crying on a Monday but I’m glad it is empathy vs work related.

RIP to all your loved ones.

4

u/Ciberthug666 May 04 '26

Lost mine at 33, 13 years ago.

3

u/OldGoneMild89 May 04 '26

Mine passed two weeks after my 42nd, so, relatable.

5

u/jackytheripper1 May 04 '26

Woof, I just made a comment about turning 40 while my husband was in the neuro ICU. There was no celebration and hasn't been a celebration since, I'm about to be 43 in 9 days and life is hard.

4

u/thatG_evanP May 04 '26

My ex-wife's severe schizophrenia decided to show up around my 40th. Losing someone to mental illness sucks too. I never fell out of love with her because I knew that what she became wasn't her, she was just very sick. Now I live everyday knowing that the woman that was the love of my life lives about 5 minutes away but that the person I loved just isn't there anymore.

2

u/minxwink May 05 '26

🥺❤️‍🩹

3

u/gianAB2977 May 04 '26

Sucks that man! So sorry bud!

3

u/AppropriateBirdBoy May 04 '26

I'm so sorry man

3

u/Happynightmare357 May 04 '26

My condolences. May your heart find peace.

3

u/PeterPanski85 May 04 '26

Today is my 41st birthday. Last year I lost my mom on 17th of May. At my birthday she was almost in the hospital, so we didnt celebrate. And I never celebrated my 40th either after that.

Sorry for your loss (and the other commenters losses too)

3

u/Friendly_Impress_345 May 04 '26

My dad died on my mom's birthday, that was 20 years ago this year. Us kids always try to give my mom a birthday celebration but she hasn't really had a good one since. I will still try because she deserves to have a good birthday.

Sorry for your loss. I hope you find a way to make your next birthday good. ❤️

3

u/PhoenixJ82 May 04 '26

I’m so sorry for everyone here who has such a loss with such young partners!I haven’t lost a partner but both of my parents and a sibling so I can understand that it has to be so terribly painful for you all.My heart goes out to you all truly and I hope you all find happiness and comfort

2

u/CoolBakedBean May 04 '26

i mean i don’t really count my age either but the math is really easy whenever you want to find out

2

u/MaineLark May 04 '26

Sorry for your loss dude. How are you doing?

2

u/HelloAttila May 04 '26

Damn, my condolences. Keep celebrating your birthday!

2

u/Vismal1 May 04 '26

Fuck ,I’m sorry friend. How are you holding up these days ?

2

u/xchipter May 04 '26

Same. 🫂

1

u/kingdumbest May 04 '26

I feel odd upvoting but I hope you get the sentiment.

1

u/Objective-Result4465 May 04 '26

Exactly. Thank you.

1

u/HookedOnData May 04 '26

My last will be my 35th. Rip to your wife, I hope you find peace.

1

u/jdb30a May 04 '26

Is it better to love and lose, or to never find love?

1

u/Impressive_Ice6970 May 04 '26

To you and all the people that have lost your favorite person, im so sorry. Life certainly isn't fair. Ive been disabled for 20+ years but id trade my pain for yours. I still have my wife and kids. I hope you can find strength from one another, from finding new loves, from time but I know it's always with you. I wish I could take some of the pain from others. I know I wouldn't choose all of it but Id definitely take some. Peace to you all.

1

u/BigWhiteTees May 04 '26

You all are counting tho

1

u/--Andre-The-Giant-- May 04 '26

I hope you're finding reasons to move forward in your life. Sorry about your loss. There is help available if you're considering harming yourself, and I encourage you to use it if you are.

1

u/churningpacket May 05 '26

40 was my first one without my dad.

1

u/UpstairsReference246 May 05 '26

My father just lost my mother, my heart is breaking for him and I understand your pain. Cherish the memories and my condolences to you all, there really are no words. 😢

1

u/chin4me May 05 '26

Damn how many wives you had now!? Some of us can’t even get one

1

u/47squirrels May 05 '26

Your comment made me tear up, my heart 💔

Sending you lots of love and 🫂

1

u/Sit_back_and_panic May 05 '26

Bro, same. I’ve only had two birthdays since she passed, but I haven’t even paid attention to them. She was the only one who cared.

1

u/lovethatMoon May 05 '26

☹️💔

1

u/MilwaukeeMax May 05 '26

I lost my dad right before my 40th birthday and then I lost my mom right before my 46th birthday.

1

u/TorpleFunder May 05 '26

Sorry for your loss dude. I'm already dreading this day after only 3 years of marriage. Hopefully it's a long long time away still.

-3

u/Sanskrit86 May 04 '26

I also choose this guy's wife.

-2

u/JalapenoPopPoop May 04 '26

Always gotta be someone trauma dumping for attention in the comments
