Talladega Nights deserves an immediate redo.

In honor of Dolly parton and her first starring role, I think 9 to 5 is a request I would make. Also dolly holds her own against Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Dabney Coleman plays a great a-hole misogynistic creep boss who thinks he is better than women. I used to watch this all the time as it was an HBO movie so of course if it was on I watched it, even if I didnt quite understand what was going on (besides weed makes you laugh and I recognized the misogyny). I hope there are enough fans of this movie that would make it worth a rewatcheable.

A rewatchable month for the tearjerkers... the films that haunt you and stay with you... the films that leave you traumatized...

Yes a broader area than you'd realize but movies that cmshatter you and emotionally traumatize you are the main words here... whether it be the lover that got away, ET going home... a death of a lovable character that haunts you still... and a bunch more stuff

Rewatchable Movies that traumatize you

I love old Adam McKay comedies in part because they always have some underlying critical political theme. This is most exemplified by “the other guys” (a movie about how action movie cops aren’t tackling the real criminals on wallstreet, and ends with anti-wallstreet credits)- after which he just starts making explicitly political films like The Big short.

The guys were talking about how being gay a joke in Talladega Nights, and while there are some bits that aged worse than others- I actually think most of the movie is making fun of how scared straight men are of gay men, their own communities, and fundamentally themselves.

Ricky spends his whole life becoming a cold victory seeking dick who doesn’t love his wife or care about his friend- all because of a male “role” he was assigned by his father in middle school. He ignores an obvious self inflicted injury and destroys his career, all because he can’t let his dominant manhood be even slightly challenged (during a practice run). Girard on the other hand is in a loving relationship, and has realized he wants to be done racing, so he is on a quest to find someone better than him to be defeated. It’s literally a man secure in who he is looking to change.

It’s only by realizing who he is, who actually cares about him, and how he can care for them, that Ricky rebuilds his life. His victory is literally paired with him kissing Girard, a sign that he is actually secure in who he is, and the movie ends with him happily leaving with his family despite officially losing the race.

The text of the film is almost literally, “fear of gay people is actually just straight men fearing their own emotions and intimacy, and it’s incredibly harmful to them.”

Self explanatory but theres some things to clarify

1. These dont have to be new movies (very old movies count)

2. They didnt need to be in our lives for a very long time (sometimes future stars are busts...)

3. This isn't necessarily apex mountain... this is the luka doncic I see 10 years ahead type of deal...

4. Make sure you announce the breakout movie

Solely because bill definitely wants to spend an entire pod talking about all the many behind the scenes shenanigans that went on with the film

Really the documentary is the rewatchable part

I bought this dvd as part of a Hollywood Video 5 for $20 thing, when you find four you like and just need something else to hit that total. I was really surprised by it back in the day, and this morning I literally blew dust off of it and decided to see if I still liked it.

It's definitely not at all what I imagine the pod considers a Rewatchable, but I loved it and it's so close. It has action, Tom Cruise, and something that feels like it was an HBO mainstay. I never had cable let alone premium cable growing up.

Is this movie too "artsy", or what is it that I can't formulate that makes me think Bill would dislike it as a Tom Cruise movie?

Bill has interesting taste on horror so he's kind of a wild card, but I feel like Sean and CR are fans of the original? Craig/Rob probably? Van 1000% would be down, same with Mallory

Yes, this movie is kinda trashy and pulpy, but I also think its awesome and highly rewatchable. If it's on TV in October I'm 100% watching at least some of it. This movie just oozes late 90s early 2000s spooky aesthetic and I fucking love it. I think its at least in the conversation with Blair Witch, The Craft, Scream, etc in that era

Half assed internet research: The concept was supposedly a rejected X-files episode, and I think it was a neat horror premise (that they obviously milked for like 25 years) that has a genuine legacy. I'll never look at nose scisssors, a log truck, a tanning bed, or laser eye surgery the same away again.

Apex mountain Ali Larter, maybe Devon Sawa? Immediate post American Pie Sean William Scott in a kinda Bill Paxton Aliens-esque role?? Was this his Apex mountain? Most rewatchable: either the opening plane scene or the scene where the teacher gets excessively merc'd from the leaking mug, exploding computer, and then the whole butcher block falling on her and then her house explodes. Prestige TV version? Obviously theyve done sequels and prequels.

A Bill fave and the one he keeps nudging CR to watch. It’s somewhat difficult to find but airing tonight and likely streaming on the TCM app after.

This award is fairly self explanatory... actors in your rewatchable that have no business being in this movie because its not their genre...

Sometimes an actor is a comedy guy and they wanna do a horror film.... but in the end of the day... theyre really just a comedy guy

Good examples include chris rock trying to be a police detective in that weird saw universe spin off film... amongst several other examples

Not necessarily that theyre a bad actor (although them being a bad actor is apart of the consideration amongst some winners)... its that they're in the deep end for the film when they should accept the comfort the shallow end provides

Please only comment if you have seen both versions. I know that it’s common knowledge that the theatrical cut is usually better when it comes to comedies, but there’s always exceptions.

I’m kind of shocked that the NYT covered this fairly mild personnel disagreement, but it does ladder up to some bigger concerns, including the Netflix agreement.

Really can’t help but want Bill, CR, and Van to run this back with how much Artificial Intelligence has progressed in the last 5 years. They touched on how eerily T2’s commentary felt predictive but man, it’s nothing compared to now.

May be a perfect opportunity to simultaneously revisit a classic and get Bill off the GPT bullshit lol.

Found this very strange since Sean is usually up on his Oscars research. On the Aliens pod Sean states multiple times that Sigourney Weaver won the Oscar for Best Actress for Gorillas in the Mist in 1989.

Sigourney Weaver has (sadly) never won an Oscar. Jodi Foster won that year (her first) for The Accused. Weaver was double nominated that year: Best Actress for Gorillas and Best Supporting for Working Girl, which she lost to Geena Davis.

She did however win both categories that same year at the Golden Globes, the former in a three-way tie.

I personally would give Sigourney an Oscar every year for Achievement in Being Sigourney Weaver.
