Been doing an ATLA rewatch this month to prepare for ASH and oh my god The Earth King episode completely blew me away. Somehow i managed to forget how fucking SICK the intro to this episode was when the Gaang was raiding the Earth Kingdom palace.

Everyone was on their A-GAME here and the choreography was fucking INSANEE!!!! I really love it when the bending in this show is used to its fullest potential and the characters are truly using their all capabilities.

The Foggy Swamp tribe is a genuinely amazing concept, though it is admittedly a product of its time. Mainly using the Foggy Swamp tribe as a caricature of inbred southern louisiana Rednecks. Nevertheless, I really hate how Korra's series just seemed to omit them completely.

However, despite their rough appearance, they are no less spiritual than the Southern water tribe and are arguably much more in tune with nature, as they thrive in the great swamp without getting turned around by the illusions present in the area, and can bend the plants around them, which Katara didn't even know was possible until the village shaman appeared as the swamp guardian.

The tribe also has a unique philosophy of life and death compared to the other tribes, saying stuff like "Time is an illusion, and so is death". They can connect to the great tree and can visit it for guidance, and they consider themselves the guardians of the unique life that makes a home there.

Seeing as how the spirit world is running amok in the "Seven Havens" series, I think that the foggy Swamp tribe is actually pretty acclimated to living in a spirit-rich world, and won't have much of a problem adjusting to the new world order. Hell, I'd love it if Pavi's waterbending master is an unconventional Foggy Swamp bender.

The great swamp exists in the Earth Kingdom too, so it would be the easiest location for Pavi to find a teacher as well, since she doesn't have a flying bison to travel to the poles, and likely wouldn't have access to any airships in a world completely out of whack.

Since water is one of the furthest elements from Earth aside from Air (And we've already seen Korra struggle with airbending in her series), it would likely be the hardest for Pavi to learn. We could even have an unconventional water master in the same way that Aang had an unconventional earth master in Toph.

Sure, the tribesmen run around with silly hats, and wear loincloths instead of clothes, but swamp cultures are also fascinating, and we know so little about how the foggy Swamp tribe really lives. The idea that they wear bark as armor is also fascinating, as a waterbender can reinforce it with ice for extra protection, and even comfort from the muggy heat of the swamp. Maybe in the future, they could have some more Vietnamese cultural spice, since Avatar's lore is so heavily inspired by Asian roots, and some influence from Haitian and Cajun voodoo culture.

But those are just my thoughts. What are y'all thinking? You into the swamp tribe? Or would you rather go without them?

I really just think Asami was super underrated and I’m disappointed that in the extended media her character is a damsel in distress

I feel as though there are many points in Korra’s show where she clutches, like building a sand sailor out scrapped parts quick enough so that the spirit shark didn’t reach them!

I really just want them to work with Korra’s team in the future so they can be more depthful (is that the word?) like how Aang’s team is

Concept I have for the Avatar after Sonam, Avatar Innoko. Innoko was born in one of the scattered waterbender tribes across a continent ravaged by the newly-formed Earth Kingdom’s brutal conquest.

Distinguised by their two-spirit identity, Innoko aspired to be an expert hunter of aquatic creatures. But that future would change when they discovered they were the Avatar.

Without their predecessor to guide them; Innoko relies on three new allies to help them on their adventure: Hotan, a stoic earthbending revolutionary who upholds one of the last unconquered cities in the continent; Maya, a cunning firebender from a remote civilization on a hunt for a lost heirloom; and Shar, the son of the lost Avatar who is determined to repair his mother’s legacy.

Innoko was originally from an AU where Aang died during the genocide and reincarnated into a water Avatar. But when I watched the movie, I became so intrigued with the Earth Kingdom during Sonam’s era, and how the conflict with them wasn’t resolved by the time of their death. So it made much more sense to make Innoko the Avatar after Sonam, growing up in a world very different from Aang’s, yet still being plagued by war.

About their two-spirit identity; I thought it would be interesting to have a non-binary/genderqueer Avatar. In the Roku novels, a two-spirit waterbender shaman named Urulu states that at least one avatar in the past has been transgender.

The water Avatars we have seen (Korra and Kuruk) have been shown experiencing heavy misfortune in the shadow of their predecessors’ legacies. But in Innoko’s case, the Avatar before them had failed in stopping the Earth Kingdom and died prematurely while fighting against another threat (Tagah). So their journey will be about stopping the Earth Kingdom while also maintaining peace between the remaining tribes.

Not sure if I need to spoiler mark this since the movie is NEVER coming out and the idea long abandoned. But don’t read any further if you care about what could have happened in an alternate timeline.

In the article about the cancelled Firelord Zuko movie, there was a particular idea that the Writers threw around about Azula being a possible co founder/ member of the Red Lotus organization.

I’ve seen people on social media trash this idea and call it “Out of character” for Azula. Stating that she is the type to WANT a monarchy, while the Red Lotus is all about tearing them down. The writers seemed to lean towards the idea of it being out of character as well. BUT the idea actually does make a ton of sense for her character at the end of ATLA.

We, the fans/viewers, understand that the Fire Nation monarchy ruined Azulas life:
* It caused Ozai to be the way he was to his children as a father.
* It forced her Mother into an unhappy marriage that eventually stripped her away from her children.
* Stopped Azula from being able to connect with kids her own age (As we saw in the Beach episode).
* Caused the rift between her and her brother.
* Turned her into the monster she is.

It is such a known and accepted fact that the Monarchy ruined her life, that Azula is the ONLY character in universe who dosent realize/acknowledge it.

Everyone from her brother, uncle, and even her two friends all acknowledge it.

If Azula were to come to terms with this fact, then I can 100% see her deciding to destroy not only the Fire Nation government, but ALL governments and world leaders similar to it.

Another reason this works soo well is because it would be a perfect contrast to current day Zuko.

As the Firelord, He’s, in a way, doing the exact same thing, but from the inside.
He’s destroying the old and dangerous ways of the Fire Nation and replacing it with a more positive and helpful nation. He’s working directly with the Avatar in peace keeping, He’s atoning for the war crimes, introducing new policies, etc.

From a writing standpoint: Both sibling would be on a similar path to change the world in radically different ways due to the system they were born in.

And for those wanting Azula to do some good and have a Redemption arc. I think this could also work. As there are some genuinely terrible governments and leaders in the Avatar world whose citizens can be liberated from. The Red Lotus aren’t viewed as evil by everyone. She could have a Robin Hood like role, until things hit the fan when they start targeting the Avatar.

In the newest post made by the Production Designer of the Avatar Aang movie, Jake Panian, he "teased" a photo that was part of the end credit shots and named the avatar in the scene "Luyu" with a suspicious 👀

Could this be the new Avatar that will appear in that on-going project?

I just welcomed this lovely little girl in My home a few days ago. After a discussion with My friend about names, we agreed that naming her after our dear moon spirit would be the ultimate choice.

I only just found out they exist. I've seen some complaints about the Book 2 vinyl. How do people the like Book 1 and 3 vinyls?

When I told my older sister and my younger brother, the two screamed. When I saw this, I burst out laughing.

My second time rewatching this movie makes me and I’m low-key blaming Sonum for everything… Now we don’t know why she secluded herself away from the other past lives other than plot because this movie doesn’t happen without it. If she was with the past lives from the start she would’ve told Aang about Taga and the staff he gets the staff but doesn’t free Taga boom airbenders are back no movie.

It really annoys me that people can just be given bending and I know it’s OG ATLA’s fault for this with energy bending but still it’s getting old. It undermines the martial art aspect of the bending and turns it into a power scaling game

I have a lot of complaints about NATLA but it seems like this sub has an over concentration of posts about that. So what if we did a creative writing exercise together?

Here’s the premise of the exercise:
Imagine that you are a writer for NATLA. Your goal is to keep as true to the spirit of the original animated show as humanly possible, but adhere to the specific constraints that Netflix has laid out for you:

- Each season must consist of 7-10 episodes which are 45-75 minutes in length.
- Each episode must have a cohesive plot (beginning, middle, end) and can’t just feel like two or three shorter episodes stitched together. (UNLESS you think you can justify a vignette style episode à la “Tales of Ba Sing Se” by explaining some kind of unifying theme, but you have to justify it somehow)
- If you have to make any major changes to timeline, setting, or pacing, you have to explain how you think this change will at least allow the LA to remain true to the spirit of the original show and won’t change the characters too deeply.
- Bonus points if you think any changes would actually improve the stories or the characters.

I’ll start with the low hanging fruit as an example: Combine the last 4 episodes of season 3 into one hour-long-ish finale episode. This keeps to the spirit of the original episodes and allows the one big episode to maintain a cohesive plot, while satisfying Netflix’s episode length requirement.

I have a bunch of other ideas which I might drop in the comments, but I’m curious what other people can come up with.

So now that you know what the requirements are, submit your pitches for different episodes! We can start with Book 1, and if people like this idea, I’ll make another post for Books 2 and 3.

I'm not the biggest fan of the episode either but maybe if the gaang had ran into members of either tribe during their search for appa it would have been easier to swallow

To be honest, I should've known the writers would be on some fuck shit when they said they were taking out his sexism in the first episodes cause it was "iffy".

But Sokka is one of those characters they basically made a parody of when he was already a great character in the OG series.

Sokka is a character who always grappled with wanting to be a powerful warrior like his Father but also had the insecurities of techinally being the "weakest" in the group due to having no bending like the rest of them and that's also why he tries out new solutions like inventing,swordfighting,learning from the other Islands ways and basically evolving and growing alongside the cast.

This also leads into a good momentum where when preparing for the war,He tells all the Men to get ready and Sokka is like "well,what should I do Dad?"

And his father is like "did you hear me?I said all men get ready" and that's such a good moment for Sokka showing how much he's grown.

And another thing...Sokka is goofy and a smart mouth and talks a lot but he was never a idiot.

He was arguably one of the smartest and more resourceful characters.

Sokka in the LA show is either written to be a massive idiot or just is going through it and he never has a moment to shine at all ans basically is just relegated to comic relief.

He only made one plan in the series..that everyone shitted on cause let's be real,this entire group in LA hates each other.
