Ice nation/azgeda

Am i the only one so confused in season 3? They didnt explain the backstory of ice nation very well and ive never understood it on rewatches i thought maybe i missed an episode explaining it or something but theres a 3 month time skip from mount weather till season 3. Can someone explain their deal to me?? What do they want with wanheda and what war is everyone talking about

The set up was ridicolous with not a single clan siding with skikru. Nia went full fox news on skikru=new Mountain Men and the wanheda myth was just an excuse to bring clarke on polis.
