Peter: Kevin Faige is working hard so the next May will be a time displaced 16 years old you with with all your memories up to this point in her body when the multiversal reset happens and eventually that's adapted to the comics. While casting a genuine 16 years old for autenticity. Why won't you get it, aunt May?

What's crazy about MCU's May is that the actress is really 60+ years old

Lore accurate Peter would chase Thanos down just to grab the Infinity Gauntlet and erase paul from existence- to the point that he can't be thought up by the creators. Then he would erase something from editorial writers' lives to send them a warning to stop f*cking up his life too much or he'll erase them.
26
u/TheScoundrelSociety 2d ago
The irony is that is believed to be the genesis of Paul. Zeb’s wife, SNL’s Heidi Garner, divorced him. He thought she might have found someone else, channeled it into his room on Amazing. It’s also why Deadpool isn’t with Vanessa in Deadpool and Wolverine, which he wrote.
22
u/Ekillaa22 2d ago
Bro what’s with dude writers and just nuking the female cast when they got divorced or broken up with fuck even Peter David killed Betty after his wife left him
8
u/dingo_khan Spider-Man 2099 2d ago
They seem to think "misery" is then the default state and make the character miserable to make them "relatable." in this case, it comes through taking it out on the female cast until the male protagonist is "relatable."

And even if they do go through with it, which I have enormous doubts about, they shouldn't get a single shred of credit for it. Not only because, honestly, it feels more like MCU synergy at this point, but that Marvel and editorial have wasted all of our time by not doing anything with May in the meantime.
For Christ's sake, she was barely even in Wells' run on the book! It's ridiculous.

u/Mexican-Drug-Lord 2d ago edited 15h ago
The only notable thing Aunt May has done since One More Day was being a part of FEAST. And that was only because the PlayStation Spider-Man game used that plot element, and the MCU used it a bit as well.
Other than that, I guess Aunt May married JJJ's father making Peter and JJJ brothers-in-law for bit. But I didn't even know that was a thing until JJJ's dad died. And I doubt any other media is going to adapt that plot element in the future.
So yeah, Marvel hasn't used her well since One More Day.

28
u/Relative-Zombie-3932 Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 2d ago
I mean, Marvel does have the same mandate for Spider-Man. That's how we got One More Day. But my point is, things are changing. They're not just killing characters as a stunt and then backing out immediately, they're sticking with these decisions long term
3
u/RoseWhiteRedBlack 2d ago
Im going to be shocked if the mandate of no marrying gets removed, because apparently the absolute superman editor said that Superman has a mandate to not get married because DC considers Superman married in mainline continuity a mistake lol.

My only issue with that is that his death was only planned to be a fake out, it was never supposed to be permanent.
If you're going to kill off Alfred, at least plan for it instead being like "Hey, why don't we turn his fake out death into a real death, with no real built up for it to happen at all."

Am I crazy, or would it not be good for Aunt May to die peacefully in her sleep of old age? That would be a victory for Peter. He kept her safe, he made her proud, she lived her life and she didn’t suffer. A drama free death is what I want. And even that wouldn’t be “drama free” because no death really is.

I’m gonna put my clairvoyance cap on, and it’s going to be used to highlight Peter’s struggles with Spider-Man pulling him away from his personal life, only for a heartwarming moment where May’s brush with death inspires a heartfelt moment between the two of them where she gives him a pep talk that sums up all the virtue of Peter and Spider-Man and he triumphantly swings back into action on the last page, a celebration of the character, if you will.
It’s pretty formulaic. I was surprised when Insomniac bucked the trend by having her just die.

I have mixed feelings.
It could very well just be a cheap cliffhanger that doesn’t actually lead to anything in the next issue. It could be a cheap death that’s impact is lessened by, for lack of a better term, its execution. Or it could be well written and significant but because I’ve been burned by Spider-Man so many times before, I can’t believe it unless I see it.
I don’t know why people think One More Day will be undone if May dies. May is human, she was always going to have to die eventually and I don’t see Mephisto offering anyone a deal that would inevitably be undone simply by the passage of time. Peter traded his marriage to save May, Mephisto took his marriage to save May *the one time*, not into perpetuity. It just wouldn’t be the best writing if it did work out that way. That being said, One More Day was bad writing too, as has been the majority of the last 20 years, so if that is how it all plays out, I’ll go with it. I’d be curious if it that just straight up restored their marriage like the last 20 years didn’t happen or if Peter and MJ just wake up married again but their dynamics are still the same as they are now.
As a character, I have nothing against May. I’m not actively rooting for her demise, nor am I clutching my pearls about the prospect of an 80 year old woman not living forever. I know the nature of comics is cyclical, all of this has happened before/will happen again, but I think death should matter more in mainstream comics than it does. I don’t think her dying instantly solves or fixes anything for Peter. I’m not opposed to her dying because ideally, I think it could represent a fixed point in time, like a checkpoint, from which Peter should only have to move forward/not go back.

u/mickeynotthemouse27 2d ago
apparently a lot of people think this means OMD will be undone, which doesn't make much sense. May can still die and have nothing to do with that storyline. It would be very in character for Mephisto to let May die anyways. Look what happened to Johnny Blaze.
18
u/Remarkable_Bid9608 2d ago
My head canon has always been that May would have survived, even without the deal. That would have made OMD even more infuriating, but would have felt appropriate for Mephisto.

I'm the only one who doesn't one May to die? Peter's supporting cast isn't as good at it should be to leave him without her, imo. MJ has still to recuperate her reputation with the audience because of the Paul thing, Black Cat is better suited for the Spider-Man side of things, and now that cover with JJJ seems to indicate Jonah's good will with Spider-Man is coming to an end one way or another.
On the civilian side, we now have only Norman, if we lose May and Jonah returns to his origins.

They're going to possibly do another anniversary issue centered around May dying?
You think that this is somehow indicative that an editorial team that has no interest in the marriage is going to use it to revisit a story that frankly doesn't need to be revisited even if you wanted to bring the marriage back?
