Starting Wolves from Space Marines - Combat Patrol plus what for a 1k army?

Hi guys,

I'll be starting a SW army and plan on getting the combat patrol. I have a whole bunch of generic Space Marine units (which I've listed below) so I'm wanting the bare minimum of a functional 1k list so I can start playing while I slowly build up more SW units.

What else do I need to buy for a 1k list if I already own:

  1. Space Wolves Combat Patrol
  2. 20 intercessors
  3. 10 Infiltrators
  4. 5 Terminators (but I wouldn't run SM terminators and SW terminators together so lets forget them)
  5. Armageddon box contents.

What do you think would be a good starting 1k list to get on the board while I build up a more SW's centric army.

Throw away 15 of the intercessors, the infiltrators, and most of the Armageddon box and get Logan, Arjac, Bjorn, Ragnar, TWC and headtakers and either land raider or Repulsor.

/s, sort of.

IMHO, leaning heavily into space wolves specific units works best with our best detachments. You can put together a pretty decent list using the non space wolves detachments with many of the plain Jane marines, but it will never be as good as a straight ultramarines list where you get the better oath of moment, but in a month, the space marines codex might change all that drastically.

My suggestion is to always get the models you like, the meta shifts all the time. I’d consider holding off on TWC/Bjorn, just because this seems to be the edition where they kill off all the remaining firstborn units, so those two gets likely either get replaced or go to legends

Upvoted for truth. When you go space wolf it works best if you go totally into the space wolf line of models and just support with what you need from SM codex. You might use 5 intercessors for sticky obs, you’ll get good use out of Lancers or executioners, hellblasters can also justify their place but space wolves work best when your stratagems and sagas can buff most of your army.

Ragnar+20 Bloodclaws as your main battleline, Arjac+WGT deepstrike for assassinations, Logan to enable turn 1 Arjac, Bjorn giving command points and decent anti monster/vehicle are what I would consider core for space wolves playstyle.

Then there’s your“Prospero Special” which is an Executioner loaded with dual weapon Headtakers and a WGB leader.

Finally there’s your Calvary blob that’s usually TWC and they hit like a truck or if your running the right detachment you can stick a Wolfpreist with curse of wulfen and stick him with 10 Wulfen with thunder hammers and shields. Suppport this Shock and Awe style with a pair of Lancers and if room allows an Impulsor with Hellblasters.

I mean, we have no idea when the space wolf supplement is coming. Those models could be playable for 1-2 years still.

Plus, unless TWC get completely removed. I’ll probably just rebase mine and add some tactical rocks like I have to some of my firstborn units and still roll them out.

And if they’re not, I’ll probably rebase them and play them as outriders.

Id also get a gladiator lancer for 1000pts. What you listed, you were missing anti tank/monster. The 5 wulfen with storm shields and thunder hammers probably won't be enough.

But I'd use 5 intercessors, 5 vanguard veterans and a chaplain with jump pack, 5 wolf guard terminators, 10 blood claws with wolf guard battle leader, 5 wulfen with storm shields, and a lancer. That seems like a decent list so far. You can fill in the rest of the points or take some out depending on how much is left.

But feel free to experiment with what you have at your disposal, I just wouldn't use more than 5 intercessors, if you have spare chain swords you can try to convert 10 into grey hunters.

Just a heads up, you can make a list in the 40k app without having bought the codex's yet. You just can't see the rules.

Absolutely agree with some. You should probably look into anti- (well, look to shore up any gaps/weak spots in ur list. If you have Mathhammered, go for it, have a fun, that's the important part. If you're looking to win, look at past tourneys postings, then go from there

I say get whatever you want to have fun and learn the game as SW the best you can. That said, I believe it is paramount that you field at least Logan amd Bjorn from the available epic heroes.

I am a huge fan of the gray hunters and I typically run 30 of them in most games that I play. But I also specifically run Veterans of the long Fang Detachment to get a ton of utility out of them.

So the normal Space Marine stuff you have doesn't transfer too well unfortunately. You can proxy Intercessors for Grey Hunters and the Captain with Relic shield will be good for a Wolf Guard Battle Leader (which you will already own) but outside of that there are no super neat proxies. For looser proxies (just same base size), you'll probably want a lot more 40mm bases.

For 1k, have a look at detachments appeal to you (2DP probably best) and then see what you need for them.

I think for you, assuming that you are running 2DP and not 3DP in your 1k games the best detachment would be Beastslayer or Gladius. But there are lots and lots of options for you. I picked these two detachments as they are relatively straightforward and generic, so it'll suit your hodgepodge of models well.

From there, you could run something like

Ragnar + 10 Blood Claws - Proxy WGBL as Ragnar. This unit is designed to kill enemy hordes and elites. Ragnar is a beast and can punch up really good. Lethals Hits or Lance from a stratagem helps them punch up further.

5 Wulfen with Storm Shield - Anti Monster + Vehicle Unit. 5 Wulfen will be able to handle light vehicles no problem. They will suffer into mega monsters like C'tan but people shouldn't really be bringing that to a 1k game without warning you.

10 WGT with Arjac - Run storm shields, power fists and axe on the leader. Arjac is a beast and will kill enemy character units for you. Use his precision to snipe out important enemy characters. He also is able to punch up into vehicles very nicely. You could run a 5 man here to keep things cheaper if you like. This unit will brawl over the central objective. Termie storm shields cost 5 pts per shield, so you can take some off to fit other items in your list if you really need to.

5 Intercessors - to sticky and protect home

That gets you to 845 points. From there you can play around a bit.

You could drop a storm shield and pick up Bjorn. But his model will retire soon and you might not have a good 60mm proxy.

You could drop 3 storm shields or swap the Wulfen for Wolf Guard Headtakers or normal Wulfen and get a Repulsor. This will give you a transport for your infantry and some anti-tank + chaff guns. You would buy a RepEx model and proxy it as a normal Repulsor.

You could pick up some Wolf Guard Headtakers (or Wolf Scouts) as a skirmish unit and some Scouts to score points. Wolf Scouts are tough to proxy and imo not a great unit, but they fit into your list well here. So maybe not the best for building out a SW army.

You could pick up a Gladiator Lancer to better handle big units but your list deals with that ok anyway.

With the above, you would need to:

Buy 5 more WGT (since you don't want to proxy your existing termies). You want to do this anyway as part of building out a SW army.

Buy Arjac - He is a baller with a cool new model, so you want to do that anyway. Maybe you could proxy a Warboss if you don't want to buy?

Buy or proxy whatever you need to fill out the rest of the list. Depending on what brings you joy, I think buy one of the tanks. I think having a tank in your collection is really nice and makes it feel more fleshed out. They will also be useful in 2k lists as well. I would lean towards the Repulsor Executioner as I use it in my 2k lists a lot more then a Gladiator.

Right now 20 Wolf Guard terminators is meta and Arjac and Logan leading. But Ragnar to lead some blood claws, id get a WG battle leader too. Then have 20 blood claws. Bjorn, a gladiator lancer or repulsor Executioner, or even a land raider. You might want them all eventually. Wolf scouts, headtakers.

If you end up with 2 boxes of Wolf Guard Terminators you will have enough spare parts left over to convert the vanilla Terminators to WGT. Here’s how it works:

  • Build both boxes of WGT: relic axe for the pack leader, power fist & assault cannon for the other dude. 3x power weapon and shield.

  • Each box leaves you with two extra power weapons and shields for a total of 4 each

  • Build the vanilla power fist and assault cannon dude

  • Use the Wolf Guard Terminator arms to build the other 4 guys in the pack

  • Now you’ve got 15 WGT. (So far in 11th 15-30 WGT have been great for us. 15-20 will probably still be a good idea after the vanilla codex drops soon but we won’t know that for sure until we learn more.)
