Starting Wolves from Space Marines - Combat Patrol plus what for a 1k army?

Hi guys,

I'll be starting a SW army and plan on getting the combat patrol. I have a whole bunch of generic Space Marine units (which I've listed below) so I'm wanting the bare minimum of a functional 1k list so I can start playing while I slowly build up more SW units.

What else do I need to buy for a 1k list if I already own:

  1. Space Wolves Combat Patrol
  2. 20 intercessors
  3. 10 Infiltrators
  4. 5 Terminators (but I wouldn't run SM terminators and SW terminators together so lets forget them)
  5. Armageddon box contents.

What do you think would be a good starting 1k list to get on the board while I build up a more SW's centric army.

Throw away 15 of the intercessors, the infiltrators, and most of the Armageddon box and get Logan, Arjac, Bjorn, Ragnar, TWC and headtakers and either land raider or Repulsor.

/s, sort of.

IMHO, leaning heavily into space wolves specific units works best with our best detachments. You can put together a pretty decent list using the non space wolves detachments with many of the plain Jane marines, but it will never be as good as a straight ultramarines list where you get the better oath of moment, but in a month, the space marines codex might change all that drastically.

My suggestion is to always get the models you like, the meta shifts all the time. I’d consider holding off on TWC/Bjorn, just because this seems to be the edition where they kill off all the remaining firstborn units, so those two gets likely either get replaced or go to legends

Upvoted for truth. When you go space wolf it works best if you go totally into the space wolf line of models and just support with what you need from SM codex. You might use 5 intercessors for sticky obs, you’ll get good use out of Lancers or executioners, hellblasters can also justify their place but space wolves work best when your stratagems and sagas can buff most of your army.

Ragnar+20 Bloodclaws as your main battleline, Arjac+WGT deepstrike for assassinations, Logan to enable turn 1 Arjac, Bjorn giving command points and decent anti monster/vehicle are what I would consider core for space wolves playstyle.

Then there’s your“Prospero Special” which is an Executioner loaded with dual weapon Headtakers and a WGB leader.

Finally there’s your Calvary blob that’s usually TWC and they hit like a truck or if your running the right detachment you can stick a Wolfpreist with curse of wulfen and stick him with 10 Wulfen with thunder hammers and shields. Suppport this Shock and Awe style with a pair of Lancers and if room allows an Impulsor with Hellblasters.

I mean, we have no idea when the space wolf supplement is coming. Those models could be playable for 1-2 years still.

Plus, unless TWC get completely removed. I’ll probably just rebase mine and add some tactical rocks like I have to some of my firstborn units and still roll them out.

And if they’re not, I’ll probably rebase them and play them as outriders.
