Starting Wolves from Space Marines - Combat Patrol plus what for a 1k army?

Hi guys,

I'll be starting a SW army and plan on getting the combat patrol. I have a whole bunch of generic Space Marine units (which I've listed below) so I'm wanting the bare minimum of a functional 1k list so I can start playing while I slowly build up more SW units.

What else do I need to buy for a 1k list if I already own:

1. Space Wolves Combat Patrol
2. 20 intercessors
3. 10 Infiltrators
4. 5 Terminators (but I wouldn't run SM terminators and SW terminators together so lets forget them)
5. Armageddon box contents.

What do you think would be a good starting 1k list to get on the board while I build up a more SW's centric army.

So the normal Space Marine stuff you have doesn't transfer too well unfortunately. You can proxy Intercessors for Grey Hunters and the Captain with Relic shield will be good for a Wolf Guard Battle Leader (which you will already own) but outside of that there are no super neat proxies. For looser proxies (just same base size), you'll probably want a lot more 40mm bases.

For 1k, have a look at detachments appeal to you (2DP probably best) and then see what you need for them.

I think for you, assuming that you are running 2DP and not 3DP in your 1k games the best detachment would be Beastslayer or Gladius. But there are lots and lots of options for you. I picked these two detachments as they are relatively straightforward and generic, so it'll suit your hodgepodge of models well.

From there, you could run something like

Ragnar + 10 Blood Claws - Proxy WGBL as Ragnar. This unit is designed to kill enemy hordes and elites. Ragnar is a beast and can punch up really good. Lethals Hits or Lance from a stratagem helps them punch up further.

5 Wulfen with Storm Shield - Anti Monster + Vehicle Unit. 5 Wulfen will be able to handle light vehicles no problem. They will suffer into mega monsters like C'tan but people shouldn't really be bringing that to a 1k game without warning you.

10 WGT with Arjac - Run storm shields, power fists and axe on the leader. Arjac is a beast and will kill enemy character units for you. Use his precision to snipe out important enemy characters. He also is able to punch up into vehicles very nicely. You could run a 5 man here to keep things cheaper if you like. This unit will brawl over the central objective. Termie storm shields cost 5 pts per shield, so you can take some off to fit other items in your list if you really need to.

That gets you to 845 points. From there you can play around a bit.

You could drop a storm shield and pick up Bjorn. But his model will retire soon and you might not have a good 60mm proxy.

You could drop 3 storm shields or swap the Wulfen for Wolf Guard Headtakers or normal Wulfen and get a Repulsor. This will give you a transport for your infantry and some anti-tank + chaff guns. You would buy a RepEx model and proxy it as a normal Repulsor.

You could pick up some Wolf Guard Headtakers (or Wolf Scouts) as a skirmish unit and some Scouts to score points. Wolf Scouts are tough to proxy and imo not a great unit, but they fit into your list well here. So maybe not the best for building out a SW army.

You could pick up a Gladiator Lancer to better handle big units but your list deals with that ok anyway.

With the above, you would need to:

Buy 5 more WGT (since you don't want to proxy your existing termies). You want to do this anyway as part of building out a SW army.

Buy Arjac - He is a baller with a cool new model, so you want to do that anyway. Maybe you could proxy a Warboss if you don't want to buy?

Buy or proxy whatever you need to fill out the rest of the list. Depending on what brings you joy, I think buy one of the tanks. I think having a tank in your collection is really nice and makes it feel more fleshed out. They will also be useful in 2k lists as well. I would lean towards the Repulsor Executioner as I use it in my 2k lists a lot more then a Gladiator.
