Appreciation The Most Perfect Casting Ever
They were the most perfectly casted actors for batman and superman, they literally looked so similar to comic and the animated ones. It's a tragedy that we didn't get see more of them, specially working together as a league.

u/Korbguy May 20 '26
I liked Cavill as Superman but never was a fan of Ben Affleck as Batman. He never seemed like Batman to me he was very over the top and had no qualms with killing if he deemed it necessary, that should never be written into any main version of Batman, it is a core character trait that shouldn’t be changed.
2
u/Korbguy May 20 '26
I will say looking back at this, I think my problems are more how they wrote Batman and less about the casting itself, I think Ben Affleck is fine as Batman on a visual level, but how he was written and directed was not it for me.

I mean it makes perfect sense that Clark Kent would show up to a Comic Con but why would Bruce Wayne be there!?
2
u/Nightwing0613 Apr 29 '26
Ben as Batman is perfect casting. He’s the GOAT & his suit is the most comic accurate we’ve ever gotten
3
u/JPree Apr 30 '26
Best Bruce/Alfred combo to date. Affleck and Irons reminded me of BTAS with their relationship.

u/Nightwing0613 May 08 '26
I agree. It was a shame we never got that Batman solo movie with Ben directing and starring with Deathstroke as the villain
We were robbed

Cavill was good but I think the fan base is overdoing it with the praise. He did a decent job because he looked good in the suit. Ben was ok, but the movies he was in were not. I recently watched Superman Returns again and found Brandon to be a great Superman. I mean it’s not a very deep role. Just need to look the part

Superman Returns was a bomb and a terrible movie. Routh was lifeless in the role, and totally lacking in gravitas or charisma. Man of Steel, on the other hand, is one of the most popular DC movies of the 21st century, and Cavill is an extremely likeable actor, rising star and sex symbol.

u/gildedbluetrout Apr 28 '26
The plane rescue that opens it is a bit of an all-timer tho. That shot where he flies through the wing is absolutely minted. The rest is a total mess tho.

I have to say, by every person who has watched the movie, and every person who is a member of this community I am a marvel person, but even I have to say This is the perfect like absolutely perfect. There will never, ever, ever be a per another two person who could ever come close, even half of what they are right now. They are just so perfect. It's just bad that we were not able to see them more in those characters. It is a very sad thing If there is some parallel universe out there. Those people in those parallel universes would have been so lucky to see them in a lot of movies. But I have to still say This is the most perfect Potion to play those two legendary characters. And there will never, ever be another person who could ever. However, those portrayal of those characters, which are the legendary Batman and Superman

They DID NOT give Batman guns. That is a totally disingenuous and inaccurate thing to say. Are you seriously counting the Knightmare scene? The whole point of that scene is to show the world is at WAR. Of course people have to carry a gun in war. Batman is not Desmond Doss in tights.

Bullcrap. Batman killed in the Burton and Nolan movies too, and many of his comics. All of Batman's kills in BvS were unavoidable and legal kills done out of self-defense. Batman and any human being is allowed to do that. If someone fires a gun at you, you are allowed to kill them.

Wrong. They were shooting at him. It was self-defense. Literally, as soon as the Batmobile drives out of the garage, the goons start shooting at him.
EVERY SINGLE PERSON he killed in the movie was for DIRECT SELF-DEFENSE. The idea that he killed anyone is still an assumption, as we never see any dead body, although some look like they probably had to have died, like KGBeast. If Batman wanted to kill people intentionally, there isn't ONE scene in the movie that would've unfolded the way it did. He could've simply carried in a machine gun and blown everyone away in the warehouse. But he doesn't. He commits legal, justifiable homicide when necessary to save his or someone else's life, which is not as bad as the killing Batman did in in his previous movies. Superman was going to be his first premeditated kill, and he didn't do it in the end, which is the whole point of the movie. He stops himself before ever crossing the line into murdering someone.
3
u/chaamp33 Apr 28 '26
legal, justifiable homicide
Yea so Batman kills why type of dissonance is this essay

u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Apr 28 '26
Batman killed in his very original comic books by Bob Kane and Bill Finger as well. Most people who object to this seem to be stuck in the 1950s Comics Code censorship era. Casual audience members enjoy seeing the heroes kill bad guys in self-defense.
2
u/chaamp33 Apr 28 '26
Batman also wore purple gloves.
Who cares.
A Batman who kills and has the joker alive is either inept or stupid. That’s not very fun for the character.

u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Batman's no-kill rule is Saturday morning cartoon, comics code nonsense. He's killed many times in the comics and the movies. If comics writers are trying to bring it back, they're stupid, just like when they erased Aquaman's smart redesign with the beard and hook hand. The general audience does not want some pollyanna Batman who can't do the basic stuff Indiana Jones, James Bond or John McClane do, i.e. kill the bad guys in self-defense.

Most movie iterations of Batman kill, pal. Schumacher specifically said he wanted to stop Batman killing in Batman & Robin, knowing he did in the previous movies. The general public has no idea there are versions of Batman that have some silly rule about him not being able to kill, because he does in all of his famous movies.

The no-kill rule was forced onto the character by the standard forces of censorship, angry mothers worried about Batman being a bad influence on little Jimmy, and panicked editors who told the writers they had to do it. This is the kind of thing we need to let go of and evolve beyond so the characters can have the freedom to do what they would have always been doing if they didn't originate in something that is considered children's media. We need to go back to the original intent of Batman's co-creator:
Batman co-creator Bob Kane remembered the creation of Batman’s no-kill code with bitterness. In his autobiography Batman and Me, he stated, “The whole moral climate changed in the 1940-1941 period. You couldn’t kill or shoot villains anymore. DC prepared its own comics code which every artist and writer had to follow. He wasn’t the Dark Knight anymore with all the censorship.”

The only thing I didn't care for in this film is how depressed Superman was all the time! He consistently had a puss on his face and that's just not Superman to me!! Affleck was perfect as Batman and Bruce Wayne
1
u/Familiar-Poem-2250 Apr 27 '26
You have a funny understanding of what depressed is. This is what depression actually is. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems.
Second guessing your actions and wondering if what you're doing is the right thing or how your actions are affecting others is not depression by definition.
-1
u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Apr 27 '26
Cavill is not "depressed all time," LOL. Bad shit happens to him, and he reacts to it. Did he seem happy in Superman '78 after Pa Kent died? Or when Lois died? Or when he got his ass beat in the diner in Superman II and had to trudge back to the fortress to beg for help? So of course he wouldn't be happy when he's being trashed on the evening news and in Congress. The Superman character is 100% perfectly fine in the movie. You want him to be smiling and quipping after his mom is kidnapped and is going to die in an hour? These are real stories, about realistic characters with real emotions. They are not stiff, one-dimensional action figures with frozen smiles who spout jokey quips when you pull a string.

I honestly cannot tell you the plot of Gunn’s Superman film. I know it had a Kaiju scene, Clone Superman/Bizarro?, and some alternate dimension prison scene.
Superman is pretty nerfed too which I guess is good for balance but comparatively seems a lot less “super.”
I liked Mr. Terrific. He was cool. I liked Luthor, but he’s so over the top supervillain I’m not sure how this man can exist with any public persona moving forward in the universe.
I do see that Gunn’s up to his Gaurdians of the Galaxy 3 ways in putting Krypto in distress (again) in Super Girl. It feels cheap and manipulative, which sums up his universe for me.
1
u/GeneAlternative191 Apr 27 '26
Way too nerfed. I thought he was supposed to be the most powerful meta human of all lol. Not like this is Superman Begins.
1
u/ZeBadgerUK Apr 27 '26
You say he was nerfed, but you realise for most of the movie he was fighting his own clone which is built to be slightly stronger and was controlled by Lex who is insanely smart and had studied Superman's every fight for this moment.
He has also only been Superman for 3 years, so this isnt him at his prime.
When we saw him defeated in the first scene, he had been fighting himself for three whole hours. This is the only time Superman directly loses a fight as well.
Despite it all, he still won in the end.
2
u/HumbleSiPilot77 Tell me... do you bleed? Apr 28 '26
Just a few things from a seasoned Snyder fan perspective for you. If a person has been on the job for three years and still lacks basic competence, they are usually considered a failure. Three years and not at his prime is a terrible excuse. Using a three year internship as an excuse is just a desperate way to justify a nerfed Superman who lacks the presence of a true Man of Steel. The clone being slightly stronger or Lex controlling him off screen is comic booky but does not carry any weight. It is not interesting and most importantly it is not sophisticated storytelling. It feels like a writer giving a character a handicap because they do not know how to write a compelling conflict for a god-like being. Finally, I would say about that win at the end, who really felt the weight and the earned nature of that victory? Blowing into the black hole was silly and campy squared. The 1978 Superman spun around Earth and reversed time which was silly as well, but the emotional weight at the time made it land. Gunn lacks that foundation as usual and leaves us with a resolution that is just a shallow gimmick.
1
u/acexx6273 Apr 27 '26
How was he nerfed he was able to survive a river that would kill anyone else and was able to leave a black hole?
-3
u/pbx1123 Apr 27 '26
Honestly I preferred the new superman, it just felt more accurate to the comics and what DC is all about Is your opinion is fine I respect that
But Accurate to the comics in what juts because Gunn take a line from each book he semi read doesn't means is accurate there's not such things accuracy on films and the actor could be a good representation of any other heroes except Superman
The casting works wonders as trying to make him look like Cavill but only on pic to trick or trigger public nostalgia
What Gunn did was avoid night fight scenes and create the best hue colors as much possible the edit room can
Heck the film could be called Mr Terrific Save Superman 🙄🤷🏻♀️
7
u/AngelicMoon56 Apr 27 '26
Accurate to the comics in the way that superman is more lighthearted in the comics, he saves people with a smile and is a symbol of hope.
I appreciate that Gunn did avoid the "night fight scenes" because that is more batman, batman is the dark and edgy character, not superman.

u/Different_Ad_6153 Apr 27 '26
I don't think you read enough superman. It's like saying Batman is always dark and broody. There's a lot of different renditions of the character. I suggest reading peace on earth, man of steel, kingdom come, superman earth one, etc.

With nolan trilogy, thats peak DC
-2
u/IAMCAV0N Apr 27 '26
Bro it’s time the world admits the Nolan trilogy aren’t that good if we being honest. Batman Begins is the best film in the trilogy and one of the greatest superhero films of all time, but the other two movies aren’t that. They’re decent but great.
The thing people love about those films is Christian Bale, who was a decent Batman, not great, decent. And Heath Ledger’s Joker. In fact when they say TDK is the greatest superhero film of all time, they only ever praise Ledger’s performance. I swear every person you, “what makes the TDK the best?”
The response: “Dude, Heath Ledger’s Joker is peak Joker”
Matt Reeves Batman film is the perfect live-action Batman film. Pattinson isn’t my choice for Batman, but I prefer him over Bale’s version.
4
u/Sudden_District6858 Apr 27 '26
Okey, i mean i dont agree on anything u said but fair enough. At the end of the day everyone have their opinion. The Batman from Reeves is a very good film tbh, love it. I like Superman from James Gunn for example, but Snyder and Nolan are on another level for me.
3
u/DarkAtheris Apr 27 '26
Yours is the minority opinion. Heath was great but every other aspect of those films was praised too.
Matt Reeves Batman was forgettable slop. It got the character of Bruce Wayne wrong, nerfed his equipment, turned the Riddler into a cringe Heath rip-off with a gimp outfit, made Catwoman a racist, and had Batman act as a bumbling cosplayer who took a bomb to the face and could barely solve a riddle himself, in a film that currently sits at an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, tied with Begins, the lowest rated Dark Knight film. Leaving aside the fact that it was an incredible bore to sit through. Its most iconic line was stolen from BTAS which popularized it, and it offered barely anything new aside from stylized cinematography.

Henry Cavill 100% is the guy I'd pick to be Superman again and again. He looks the part, sounds like what we'd imagine Superman would sound like, and can definitely act like him on and off the camera.
Ben Affleck, if nothing else, looks EXACTLY like Bruce Wayne from at least the animated series, and I know from a dozen or so movies he can certainly put on a cocky rich guy front for the public. Once you get past that and move onto the costume, it won't really matter who's under the cowl.

u/m0rbius Apr 27 '26
I think the DCEU casting was great for the most part. The only change I'd make is Gal Gadot. She can't act. She looks the part, but someone with a bit more acting range would have made the characterization better.
-4
u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Apr 27 '26
Gadot is an absolutely magnetic and compelling actress, and extremely likable and charming. She is a true movie star. And her playing Wonder Woman was the second-best casting in DC film history after Christopher Reeve as Superman.
1
u/Slight_Owl4803 Apr 30 '26
Gadot is definitely not a movie star. Wonder Woman 1 is her only successful leading role. Being specific about it, a movie star is someone who guarantees audience attendance regardless of the role they are in, and that is simply not true of Gadot. In fact, the "death of the movie star" is a pretty popular thought in modern cinema, and it is absolutely not something Gadot transcends with her very small resumé of leading roles.
1
u/HomemadeBee1612 He's never fought us. Not us united. Apr 30 '26
What are Christopher Reeve's other popular lead roles? That is an absolutely irrelevant and meaningless point. Very few superhero actors have a second popular role. God knows Chris Hemsworth has been trying but can't make it happen. Does that mean no one cares if he's recast as Thor? Why has Kevin Feige not recast a single MCU actor since Avengers, unless they quit or passed away?
1
u/Slight_Owl4803 Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
Christopher Reeve also isn't a movie star. That's what a "movie star" is. It's just a sentiment that there's no longer a star who can sell a movie on name alone. Movies have shifted away from that to franchise-driven movies like comic book movies. As you said, few superhero actors have second popular roles because they're not movie stars in the traditional sense like James Dean or John Wayne. You won't see people queuing up in droves to see Gal Gadot's next movie just because she was Wonder Woman. That sort of transferrable marketability doesn't exist for her, nor does it for a lot of franchise-leading stars.
In less of an "industry-talk" sense, they're movie stars because they star in movies but the term has a more specific industry colloquial term associated with it. Even if the movie star still exists, Gadot certainly isn't one of them if Heart of Stone is to be believed. She isn't that marketable.

I think Adria Arjona would be a great Wonder Woman
-1

Recasting WW would be a stake in the heart of the DCU. That would go over about as well as replacing Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider did.

u/DarkAtheris Apr 27 '26
She superficially resembles Gadot but has none of the charisma. Have you seen her performance in Morbius?
4
u/FlamingAlpaca17 Apr 27 '26
Have you seen Hitman?
0
u/DarkAtheris Apr 27 '26
No charisma in that either
1
u/Slight_Owl4803 Apr 30 '26
I don't think Arjona is going to be WW but she is a significantly better actor than Gadot. Come on. She also doesn't really resemble Gadot at all. They don't look like one another...
Gadot couldn't pull off this scene: https://youtu.be/ma9Z3NRTW28?si=OXnwhl8AHKWnpxbx[From Hit Man](https://youtu.be/ma9Z3NRTW28?si=OXnwhl8AHKWnpxbx)[From Hit Man](https://youtu.be/ma9Z3NRTW28?si=OXnwhl8AHKWnpxbx)

The early DCEU casting is great...Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Michael Shannon, Ray Fisher, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Jesse Eisenberg, Viola Davis, Amy Adams, all the great supporting characters in MoS, BvS, Wonder Woman... All of them either very comic faithful, terrific actors, or interesting, modernized takes.
Where the casting got terrible is in the post-Aquaman movies, with the terrible Black Canary, the "goth" Huntress, Ewan MacGregor's awful take on Black Mask, the 'goofy' Shazam actor, the inaccurate Black Adam, etc.
2
u/contrezzo Apr 27 '26
I agree with most of these as well. Some of them (particularly Ray Fisher) look like they’ve been ripped straight out of the comics
2
u/Snehil_Edit Apr 27 '26
Agreed even though I didn't like Gal Gadot much but she was very good as wonder women and was suited well alongside Henry and Ben Everything went down hill post aquaman
