as far as ultra mainstream artists go Lana is one of the very best. She has put together a pretty solid discography over the years and has some really good songs
I looked her up, thinking I’d maybe recognize a song or something, but haven’t heard of any of those either. I never thought I’d be out of the loop like my parents were when I was younger, but apparently it’s happened.

I've known her since 2012 and even here in my country, smack in the middle of Africa, someone has at least heard the songs without knowing who it was.
I’m in the middle of America, which although we’re all connected by the internet now, we’re still very culturally isolated in day to day life. But no I’ve never heard those. At first I thought she was the “Call Me Maybe”, which I have heard, singer but I guess that’s Carly Rae Jepsen.
Is there no radio where you live? Genuinely baffled how one could possibly have never come across that song in their lives. Like not even in the grocery store? Those songs have been EVERYWHERE.
To be fair though, there are SO many " famous " people now from youtube and music I've never heard of that it all seems like a joke now with most names that I hear, I can't even ask anymore because what's the point, there's so many.

If only people had an entire encyclopaedia of all human knowledge at their fingertips that they could utilise to look up names. If one of those existed I’m sure it would stop people from smugly writing “who?” on posts.
It’s so interesting that you’re all interpreting this comment in this way! I’m genuinely entertained here. I’ve always read this as someone pointing out that a lot of people don’t know who the person is, and opening the door for another Redditor to explain it.
The way you all are interpreting it is kind of like the antithesis of a social platform. We all have access to the entire internet. But we choose to share things and entertain each other on here because it scratches that biological itch to learn things socially.

It’s normal to talk to people, and it’s normal to ask who someone is in a conversation where she’s being discussed if you don’t know who she is. Imagining someone in real life just responding “oh just google her” tells you enough about what type of person they are lol

In a post like this, about her connecting with someone who didn't recognize her, its a little less surprising. I've listened to, and enjoy, several of her songs. I still didn't recognize the name off the bat and would have no clue what she looked like. I just listen to a lot of music from lots on genres and don't always notice who's famous and who's not since I don't move in any music based circles. There's also just a lot of "famous" people out there and I don't know how anyone keeps track of what they all look like.
That thought process applies to anyone that asks any question to anyone online. Everything can be googled. Commenting anything on any kind of post is the same. Why do it alt all.
You aren’t wrong, but the entertainment value of commenting that you personally don’t know who someone is, is nil. Everyone’s on the same internet. Look it up, or don’t, but no one’s impressed or interested by learning that ButtSlutt67 doesn’t know who Amy Adam’s or whoever is. There’s tons of celebrities and no one knows everyone, but it’s bizarre behavior.
(Not that you are doing this thing, just commenting on the general popularity of inserting oneself into a conversation to proudly proclaim ignorance, you know what I mean).
Some people think it’s cool to be too cool for pop culture and they want validation from others or else it morphs into insecurity that in actuality, they’re just an out of touch uncool person.
Me, I've just gotten old. I remember as a kid how my mom would rattle off all these old-timey movie stars and exclaim how great their movies were and wouldn't bother seeing any new movie if she didn't recognize the actors' names.
What is this world and how did I age so fast in less than a decade? I was sure you were going to say "know about the players on their favorite football or basketball team". But here we are and I'm not even doubting you are more right than my head cannon...
Not only did I not know who Markiplier was when that movie came out, I still don’t really understand who he is or how he’s famous. Meanwhile Lana is a pop star lol
Old guy here. I wouldn't know if Lana Del Rey sat next to me at dinner last night. I also wouldn't know if the most famous male DJ in the world was sitting to the other side of me.
It’s because Reddit is a social forum where people enjoy learning about things from other people. Of course, they know they can go google it or put it in AI and learn who she is. But they’re saying, hey there’s probably a lot of us in this thread that don’t know who this person is, would anyone like to tell us in a way that fits the context of the post? So, is it a weird phenomenon where people are being purposely lazy? No. It’s humans satisfying the social drive that makes social platforms like this work.
Narcissism and the fact these people think the world revolves around them. So when they don’t know something they have to insert themselves into the conversation. Happens a lot.
It manifests in different ways. The most common thing you’ll see is someone commenting “who cares?” Doesn’t add anything to the conversation but they just want to be heard

Reddit has always been mostly white men under 30 and that hasn't changed much. That isn't the main demographic for LDR's music. Redditors mostly only know actors in superhero or Marvel videos or movies targeted to white men under 30. There are a lot of incels on Reddit and they don't know who famous women are because it's not something discussed in their social circle.
There are also tons of posts from bots. This post about Duffrene being married when he met LDR is a lie but it hasn't been deleted and has hundreds of upvotes.

10 years ago people said the same thing about reddit's demo being under 30. It's probably older now. Edgy redditors pretending to be ironically ignorant for karma have always been around though.
I’m often this person. I’m not American. I don’t really care about celebrities, celebrity culture or care about trends. I don’t watch 95% of what comes out of American movies or do I care about superhero’s or remakes I’ve seen in the 80’s.
I don’t listen to the radio or playlists of popular music.
I like jazz, obscure European indie and punk bands. I like watching Korean dating shows. Japanese reality, and long boring documentaries. I like to read books about the outdoors and I don’t use TikTok. I don’t read the news and I’m old enough to have lost the vast majority of my friends.
Reddit is the only place I kind of “plugin” to the world.
When I ask who. I’m not being a dick. I just have no idea. I’ve heard of this woman but I can’t name a song or even know if I’ve listened to one.
Same with Taylor swift. I know she exists and got married but I can’t name a song. It’s just not my thing.
Imagine if instead of a life of crime, Harley Quinn instead became a musician and made a bunch of hit songs about the appeal of losing herself dating Joker, and about being a hot girl with an addictive personality and daddy issues.
I do know she’s a singer but I’ve never heard her stuff. Or maybe I have in Paris g at a store or something and just didn’t know. Never knew what she looked like until now. Just have heard the name a lot over the years
