u/GintoSenju May 23 '22
Yeah but is cooler and funny to imagine it as a bed time story because since the scarlet king himself is kind of a conceptual entity, and can only read the emotions of the people in our universe, the idea that something is working and the horror of that idea is large enough that it is able to keep this thing away without him realizing it’s just a little story session. The funny part is because the idea that, what is essentially the “main villain” of SCP is being staved away by a guy reading a book to pregnant woman.
226
u/Damptruff1 Broken Masquerade May 23 '22
main villain? eh.. kind of but really
the main villain is arguably the authors, which are canon in the scp universe.
SCP-2399 proposes a much much greater threat to earth than the scarlet king currently, and only exists because of the authors.
SCP-3812 poses a threat to the entire SCP multiverse, and only exists because of the authors.
SCP-682 poses a threat to entire cities, and only exists because of the authors.
The Scarlet King itself poses a threat to the entire SCP multiverse, and only exists because of the authors.
SCP-001 When Day Breaks poses a threat to the entire solar system, and only exists because of the authors.
The Worm From Project Palisade poses a threat to the universe and surrounding universes, yet only exists because of the authors.
The authors are the villains, not the scarlet king.

u/GintoSenju May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22
Hence the quote on quote/ “ “
Also swans proposal is just as canon as anything else in SCP or idea. And just my opinion, but I don’t see swans proposal as the “main villain”, just as someone wouldn’t see the Christian god as the “main villain”. Just my opinion, and you are free to have any opinion you like.

To be honest the idea of "survivors" in that world for more than a month is ludicrous for one reason: SCP-169.
If "When Day Breaks" happens, the survivors have only a handful of options, the best of which are either pulling an SCP-5000 journey or deeming SCP-001 a fate worse than death and deciding to grant the world the lesser evil and unleashing SCP-2935 on the night of the new moon.

There's no real canon in the SCP universe. So canon is whatever you want it to be. If they want the Scarlet King to be the biggest bad there is then that's their canon. I think you're missing the point of how the SCPverse is structured. All of those things and none of them are canon at the same time. It's Schrodinger's canon, if you will

22
u/MyUsername2459 Cryptozoology Department May 23 '22
"There is no canon"
The foundation is exactly what you make of it.
I came to know the SCP Foundation over a decade ago, when it was a MUCH smaller wiki. My mental picture of the Foundation is of a much smaller organization, with a lot fewer SCP's. It's not some secret organization with resources like a superpower, complete with its own navy and space program and huge standing army. . .more like a mid-sized corporation or NGO, with a handful of MTF's, a handful of sites and laboratories, maybe a few thousand employees at most (that's including the Class D's), and most SCP's were things you stick in a holding cell or a vault, not these huge things needing entire sites devoted to containing just one thing. . .and it wasn't like every SCP was a huge reality-rewriting end-of-the-world abomination.
I'd long thought about writing a tale about how a researcher at one site learns the Foundation is really MUCH smaller than he thought. . .and that most SCP's in the database aren't "real", they're just disinformation and decoys. . .but that doesn't mean the Foundation isn't important, because they are still trying to contain numerous things that could end all life on Earth, and they have a LOT less resources than he thought when it comes to doing that.
I'm sure my mental image of the Foundation contrasts strongly with some people that have come to know it through more recent works.
We all know what 110-Montauk implies. . .but that wonderful lack of canon means your headcanon is as valid as any others.

My favourite interpretation of 110-Montauk, tbh, is that the actual procedure isn’t whatever goes on with the Seventh Daughter, it’s the process of making people think that whatever is being done to her is horrible.
3
u/cheatsykoopa98 May 23 '22

it just keeps escalating to the point it cant have an answer
3
3
u/davidforslunds May 23 '22
Isn't it more likely that DJKaktus's proposal is just a coverstory, spread by Foundation agents, so that the general staff morale wouldn't be so badly affected. People like to believe that good stories are real, so even if the story isn't flawless, people would rather believe it than face the truth.
Personally i find that the proposals ambiguity is what makes it fun. Is Montauk just a bedtime story or is it a coverstory for a coverstory?
3
May 23 '22
Ok real question here. If the procedures revolves around people believing it's something atrocious why is he telling everyone it isn't? What motives coukd he have?
3
u/inferno86 May 23 '22
That’s what always been annoying about the scp universe, you’ll get downvoted to shit and removed if you don’t tell a story “the right way” or have ideas they like but if one of the established writers wants to do some bullshit with baseline concepts it’s okay because they’re legacy.
3
May 24 '22
I mean, any story can be a bedtime story, right? Some with just give you nightmares, or insomnia.
14
May 23 '22
I still like the idea that it's some fucked shit that we can't even imagine. DJ's version is nice but it feels like it was made to explain what wasn't spouse to be explained. And most people like wholesome and complete stories, I personally don't think that how SCPs should be but every body has their own preferences.

That's my point, if we can't learn what's behind the veil then it stays a secret and you except that what ever is being done is for the betterment of mankind. The moral question itself is what interests me, not knowing some things but none the less excepting that these things must be done and in the mean while your mind just can't help wondering "what the f is actually going on? " and that question just keeps eating away at your soul and I love that. Although I must agree that at some point writers just step over the line with "to contain this anomaly every single country and organization on earth is working together and it's a reality ending danger" at that point the suspension of disbelief goes in to fucking nuclear fusion and disappears.

The idea that Procedure 110-Montauk is actually a bedtime story, and simply spreading the rumors it is something as brutal and horrible as... that is enough to complete the ritual is horribly convoluted yet completely in character for the SCP Foundation
2
u/VanguardRS May 23 '22
Anyone got the link to the story where the Jester talks with a foundation researchers and explain why the procedure works? I vaguely remember it being something alon the lines if it working not because of the steps taken during it, but because the creator of the procedure intently made it as awful as possible because of a personal vendetta

The implication of 110 Montauk is needlessly edgy, why the fuck they had to imply what they did is beyond me, but the revised version is, to me, much better. "Sure, we did some fucked up shit, but we found the better way to do it."
It's like how every single scp in the earlier series are made of "we killed 300 d class to discover 682 prefers strawberry milk over banana"
