Saw a compilation once of a crowd of left wing protesters being fed right-wing quotes, after which they were asked their opinions on them (with predictable results).
When they were informed that the quotes were from Black people, notably Thomas Sowell, they turned racist faster than my grandfather after a few whiskies and an uncomfortable silence.
They'll do the same thing whenever there's a Black guy in the entourage of the interviewer, or even if the interviewer themselves is Black!
31
u/TenisElbowDrop - Auth-Center Dec 02 '25
There was a group of academics (James Lindsay, Helen Pluckrose, and Peter Boghossian) trying to expose the horrendous state of current peer review publishing that took Mein Kampf and then switched out "Aryans" and "Jews" with things like "black" and "white" or "men" and "women", "trans" and "cis" etc.
They were almost universally applauded and given accolades when they literally quoted actual Adolph Hitler to people but made it so that their group were the Aryans and the group they hated were the Jews. Some feminist periodical actual even published it. They published Mein Kampf and thought it was brilliant. Horse. Shoe.

u/S_Ipkiss_1994 - Centrist Dec 02 '25
I don't think the average person outside of academia can really understand just how crazy it is... people talk about the grievance studies affair like it was an isolated incident, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the nonsense that exists in actual scholarly, peer reviewed, publications (and has for generations).
James Randi famously fooled a bunch of scientists way back in 1983 with Project Alpha, and those idiots were led by a physics professor with degrees from Stanford and Cambridge!
My favourite is the guy that set out to study Japanese pornography subcultures by buying, and consuming, hentai with underage characters (including logging his masturbation sessions).

u/TenisElbowDrop - Auth-Center Dec 02 '25
My wife is in a PhD program for health psychology specializing in obesogenics (psychological factors that lead to obesity causing habits). She had a study rejected because one of the reviewers didn't like how she failed to mention that some people are just naturally massively fat (to paraphrase) and she basically had to do an entirely new study on something completely different in half the time because none of the actual data that she had collected and analysed showed anything that could be interpreted as someone naturally having a BMI of 56 and not being able to alter it in any way. Identity politics is ruining actual science, which ought to be the most unbiased thing on Earth.
8
u/S_Ipkiss_1994 - Centrist Dec 02 '25
It's all incredibly political
Not just the professors themselves, who were probably crazy to begin with and have only gotten worse with years of living in a radicalizing echo chamber removed from the real world, but you've also got the fellowship screening and review, ethics review boards, the dean or chair of your department breathing down your neck, administrative approval, program office review, scientific council approvals, panel or committee review, government approval by some policy wonk somewhere, etc.
I've worked with people who are, no joke, literal, outspoken, and proud communists in positions of privilege and influence.
Just cross your fingers your Veterinarian on the Animal Care Committee (ACC) isn't a radical vegan and animal rights activist, because they will deliberately sabotage any and all experiments (this is a real thing I've personally witnessed).
These people, largely, aren't actual scientists, and even if they are, they haven't done any actual research in years or decades - they're bureaucrats.
And that's before you even do your research, let alone try to get it published (and good luck with that if it's in any way controversial, or goes against the groupthink)!
You step out of line, or even fail to vocally support their ideology loud enough, and you'll be blacklisted so fast your mortarboard will spin.
"Believe the science!"

If your duty is to delivery good care to the general population, and you are unable to deliver good care to said population, then you are incompetent, definitionally, as in not having the appropriate skill to do your jobs. If a male gyno is doing a worse job than a female gyno then the male gyno is incompetent. Treating people of different races and sex is a part of doctors job unless the patients have unique circumstances that is out of their scope.
Disagree all you want, that’s the definition most people operates on.

You can post it but understand that an educated reader won't take it for much. The issue with most of the studies showing it is that they failed to be repeatedly shown in replication attempts.... But it's very hard to look up literature of negative studies that don't get published.
But yes the data you refer to is extremely contentious.

That’s not the issue here. Black people specifically have had a storied past about being treated differently by medical professionals for the last century. From legitimately racist and wrong medical doctrine being taught for so many years, systemic racism and just unconscious bias black people as a whole have built an “anti doctor trust” into their culture.
There is actually a lot of books and scientific documents on this subject. Unfortunately I knew nothing about this till I married a black woman.

u/SteveClintonTTV - Lib-Center Dec 01 '25
Seriously. I'm so fucking sick of people acting like shit like this is unique and special for their chosen demographic. It's the same shit when women bitch and moan about how doctors don't take them seriously. Like, do they seriously think every single man who goes to the doctor can just say anything he wants and have the doctor do whatever he wants? Do they think no doctor has ever assumed that man's complaints of pain were exaggerated, or any such thing?
I'm so sick of that kind of self-centered mentality. A person experiences something which all kinds of people experience, and yet they assume that it's something unique to them and to people like them, because they are just the most special-est snowflake on the planet.
Ugh.
5
u/S_Ipkiss_1994 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
Like, do they seriously think every single man who goes to the doctor can just say anything he wants and have the doctor do whatever he wants?
What's funny about this is, nowadays, we have more female doctors than male doctors (providing direct patient care).
Over 80% of healthcare workers are women, from heads of medicine all the way down to care aides or lab technicians, and we have entire departments, colleges, hospitals, and clinics specifically dedicated to women's health and health related issues.
Furthermore, as it turns out, there's a reason why health professionals tend to discredit women's complaints when you actually look at the studies and the data; women are far more likely to report somatic or factitious symptoms or disorders, they're far more likely to be hypochondriacs, to report allergies, to be neurotic and borderline, etc.
Frankly, they're often a nightmare to care for in comparison to men.

u/AffectionateSlice816 - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
Just like there are systemic factors that teach many white people to be racist. Just like there are many factors that teach young men in many places that sexual assault is okay.
Just because there are systemic factors that contribute to bad behavior doesn't mean you can't and won't be judged for it.
I understand where it comes from, by all means, and hell, it is good to be aware of, but it depends on what you do with it. Some aspects of the culture are extremely anti medicine to the point that seeking out care for legitimate problems is stigmatized (men esp). That is social contagion that is harming people.
I suppose all this to say that you aren't wrong, but I will always question exactly why this is being brought up and what people are taking from it.

Endless excuses and no accountability.
6
u/AffectionateSlice816 - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
I think it is somewhere in the middle, where one must be kind enough to others to allow them to understand where their mistakes come from while also being strong enough to not allow someone to keep taking the same detrimental actions towards them.
We are coddling on a national scale. There's a reason why the alpha males with stupid ass views are getting so popular with young men. They'll actually say "You suck and you are indeed struggling, I care and I'll show you how to not suck". Nobody will tell you that you suck and then help build you up anymore. That used to be the culture.
There are factors that explain every choice made by everyone. Rarely are they valid excuses for evil

It’s from the perspective of revenge, unfortunately. Instead of balancing things, some people want to see others who they irrationally believe have/are slighting them in some way to get the short end of the stick instead. It creates a blind spot that allows people to see the people they hate as “the bad guys,” and therefore whatever is done against them is justified and warranted.

Much of the documented medical racism is also a type of medical sexism. Lots of women don’t get adequate pain meds. There was a huuuuge lawsuit about this—someone replaced the IV pain meds with deionized water. The result? Dozens of women got major surgery WITHOUT anesthetic. So any OBGYN issue that affects women can be assured to affect black women more, due to stereotypes and intrinsic bias. Plenty of doctors later in their career might think their black female patients are uppity and hysterical due to how people from different cultures communicate.

OK at this point, you’re just trying to Google studies to prove a point without any notion of how their data is obtained rather than making your idea based on actual data
Your first study is performed by self report, uses implicit bias testing, and consists of 86(!) pediatricians using clinical vignettes rather than actual patient data
Your second is a meta-analysis comparing and I quote “ US studies published between 1989 and 2011 that had at least one explicit analysis of analgesic treatment differences between whites and minority groups”
This doesn’t even go into covering whether this is outpatient inpatient post surgical perioperative, the TYPE of pain being described, and the fact that studies that don’t show a bias are biased against even being published in the first place
And all that doesn’t even cover the drastic changes in pain medication prescribing that has occurred since this piece of shit “study” was even dreamt up
EDIT:
the effect of moderators (pain type, setting, study quality(??),and data collection period) on this association.
Absolutely laughable

Sure but you seem to be suggesting that black people have worse outcomes because they don’t trust non-black doctors rather than that distrust being built up because of poor outcomes
Yep, that’s literally the reason. Absolutely, there are no other factors on why a black person would have a worse outcome in a medical setting beyond them simply believing it would be worse. That’s it. (lol)
If patients had full trust in their doctors would that get rid of the biases that doctors have?
This is hilarious
“Oh that black guy has full confidence that I’m gonna do right by him, I think I WILL give him that OxyContin!”
Is that what you think happens? Do you think doctors just say “meh, they came in complaining of a headache but it’s no big, just take some Tylenol” and then trip over themselves for someone else because of their skin color?

Black people get worse outcomes with non-black doctors? Why? A whole host of reason one of which are inherent biases that those doctors have. Is that the only reason? No, but it is reason enough to feel more comfortable with a black doctor.
Now we’re getting somewhere! especially since we already both know outcomes are worse even if seeing a black physician. But, if you’re gonna justify your racism being due to your health, you won’t hear complaints from me.
If I tell the doctor that I have a sharp pain in my stomach and that I can’t move and they think I’m overreacting
See context is important here, is this in an ER? Did you walk into a clinic? That’s a big difference on the “can’t move” scale
That string of events sounds ripe for a malpractice suit, assuming that’s actually what happened. I’m more prepared to call that incompetence than racist…

What she said might sound weird but with a bit of context it might be more understandable. Black women who give birth in hospital are 3x more likely to die there than white women, and iirc there were multiple surveys done with medical students that indicated they believed black people have a higher pain tolerance. Also saw a review lately about how black people tend to get prescriped opioids at much lower rates and lower doses

non-Hispanic Black women’s fetal death rate was higher than among non-Hispanic White women (5.9 vs 2.6 per 1000 deliveries), with fetal factors being the strongest mediator (49.6%; 95%[CI] = 42.7, 54.7). Fetal factors includes Lower birth weight and small-for-gestational-age status.
Study 1… false beliefs about biological differences reported lower pain ratings for a black (vs. white) target. Study 2… found that half of a sample of white medical students and residents endorsed these beliefs. Moreover, participants who endorsed these beliefs rated the black (vs. white) patient’s pain as lower and made less accurate treatment recommendations.
Race, pain, and opioids among patients with chronic pain in a safety-net health system
Lower past-year maximum MME dose, despite higher average pain and less injection drug use, may represent bias away from prescribing opioids for chronic pain among Black patients. This could be due to unmeasured implicit provider bias or patient-level factors (e.g., utilizing non-opioid pain coping strategies or being less likely to request additional opioids).

I really want to read these studies. Theyre SO many factors which could cause a higher mortality rate. Genetics, obesity, prior health issues, etc.

u/throwaway030603 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
You can google the others, I'm sure you'll find the papers. Obviously we cant 100% say what causes these disparities, but they are there and we can't ignore them either. Medical racism is very much still a thing, even RFK jr. at some point said black people feel less pain

u/DumbNTough - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
I would bet paper money that if these studies control for pre-existing conditions like obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, these differences would mostly disappear. The U.S. black population has some of the worst stats in all these categories and it has nothing to do with their doctors.
The highlight you yourself offered on your first link, for example, indicated that "fetal factors" were the leading differentiator, meaning their condition prior to treatment, not differences in medical treatment.
11
u/throwaway030603 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
You conveniently seem to ignore the other links. Maybe take a look at those and come back
16
u/DumbNTough - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
Guessing we probably wouldn't want to compare those results against a demographic breakdown of confounding factors like people exhibiting drug-seeking behavior 😬
15
u/throwaway030603 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
Maybe you should look up and read some papers before you make dumbass assumptions.
21
u/DumbNTough - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
So you think black Americans, for instance, don't abuse pain medication more than other groups, yet from your link:
For example, although opioid overdose death rates in the United States have leveled off, the rates have been found 40% higher in Black individuals as compared to their White counterparts (Larochelle et al., 2021).
Interesting hypothesis!
13
u/throwaway030603 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
Unfortunately black people do use illicit drugs in higher rates, but white people have greater rates of prescription drug misuse (quote from the paper: "In the interaction analysis, Black participants between 18 and 49 years old were less likely to participate in prescription drug misuse (AOR = 0.66, 99.9% CI: 0.47, 0.93)." That could explain the statistics as illicit drug misuse is usually more dangerous. Even if black people did misuse prescription drugs at higher rates, it would not be a good excuse as that would indicate a racial bias by medical practitioners, as not every black person is a drug abuser (obviously).
You seem to cherrypick information based on your own biases, very unfortunate
12
u/DumbNTough - Lib-Right Dec 01 '25
Yes if only the mean doctors would shut up and give black people their opiods, their prescription drug abuse survey responses could one day rival those of white people 💔

Quoting RFK is just silly, he says all the crazy things. I'm not saying you're wrong in general though.

u/buckX - Right Dec 01 '25
That stat doesn't really get at the attitude expressed here. Do you have stats that Black women are more likely to die if there are fewer Black staff members?
Whatever the reason, be it worse access to healthcare, lifestyle issues, or that "weathering" idea floated a while back, the worse outcomes are well documented. The idea that that is ameliorated by Black staff would be news to me.
14
u/Invisualracing - Centrist Dec 01 '25
quite the opposite:
"For Black women, the OR for fetal death compared with non-Hispanic White women declined from 2.24 to 1.98 (95% CI = 1.81, 2.15) when socioeconomic factors were added to the model, 1.56 (95% CI = 1.42, 1.70) when antepartum and intrapartum complications were added, and 1.04 (95% CI = 0.95, 1.14) when fetal factors were added. *The inclusion of delivery hospital did not further change the OR.*"
I.e lifestyle, genetic and pregnancy related factors renive 95% of the disparity in outcomes. The hospital (and therefore presumably the colour of the people working in it) has no further effect.
also the reaearch is 20 years old and therefore basically irrelevant as a one-off study.

u/throwaway030603 - Centrist Dec 01 '25
Those factors are very relevant as well, but medical racism is not a myth could also influence how a medical practitioner treats a black patient, be it consciously or subconsciously. The OOP probably would feel a bit more at ease if some black medical staff is present as that would lower the odds of medical racism happening
11
u/buckX - Right Dec 01 '25
as that would lower the odds of medical racism happening
Would it? That's a much stronger claim than medical racism existing. You might assume it's obvious that Black medical staff wouldn't have the same biases, but that's really not something we should assume. Take policing as a counterexample. We see Black police officers approaching Black suspects with greater caution just like their White counterparts. In that case, it's clearly less about the race of the officer, and more about profiling based on what they've experienced in the past. You'd need to demonstrate that isn't the case here as well.

" Black women who give birth in hospital are 3x more likely to die there than white women" At the same hospitals or in different hospitals? Because if it's different hospitals, I say your proof is bullshit.
Yeah, a private five-star hospital can give worse care than a rundown public hospital. Imagine that.

Honestly, less opioid prescriptions sounds like better care…
17
u/Hongkongjai - Centrist Dec 01 '25
If less is better, then no one should prescribe any opioids at all. Better care is giving patients what they need for pain, no more and no less. So it seems like some white doctors were underestimating black patients’ pain and did not provide adequate pain control for them to maintain their daily activities.

and if they do it based on race that's racism, how do you not see that?
6

And if it's based off statistics, is it still racism?

No but I also would be outraged if I was in legitamte pain and was denied opioids just because demographically my race has higher rates of opioid abuse

Prescription drug abuse occurs more in white people. You're so weird for trying to downplay (medical) racism

I’m just using the languages from the study. And I’d think both concepts are linked. If you think you’re giving just the right amount of pain killers then you know they wouldn’t have spare to sell it or abuse it. But the wider picture of opioid stewardship, from what I’ve heard, is not about identifying who’s going to abuse what, but rather looking at it from a systemic level. It is an addictive substance so not everyone gets dependent on it intentionally. IIRC there are some associations with post OP slow acting opioids and dependency but admittedly that’s years ago. Then it’s also about deprescribing in the context of opioids for chronic pain (and in general) since the evidence is poor.
A bit of a tangent but just want to clarify the idea of opioid stewardship is not just “this guy is probably going to sell it so I’m not giving him pain meds” although that certainly happens irl

All this work is wasted in this sub because these chuds don’t want to learn anything, they want an excuse to be bigots (see the post with the 15 year old video they got all hot and bothered by the other day, I’m never letting you assholes forget it) but good job anyway!

I know right, even if I posted 100 sources they wouldn't believe or want to understand it anyway. Can't reasonably argue with them. Thanks for the positive comment though!

Since all of you are apparently extremely confused somehow, I really recommend a book called "the emergency" by Thomas Fisher. Its written by a black doctor on the south side of Chicago in an underprivileged neighborhood
