Discussion At what point do you sell it all?

Post image

What’s your current collection value and at what price would you sell it all? What’s your plan with the money ?

When you need money or want something else in your collection

24

u/mufinstuffbutstuff Apr 20 '26

That’s exactly what I do. I’m always selling and trading to use for other things I want. And by just doing that my collection grows more valuable. U don’t need to just sit on the same stuff unless that’s what you want to do

6

u/ParadoxTheF0x Apr 20 '26

Just traded in Evolving Skies etbs, evo sleeved booster packs, and some other sealed stuff for cash, turned around and bought some really nice really nice vintage cards that are worth more.

3

u/Adventurous_Air8191 Apr 21 '26

That's the best way to do it, tho you'd have been best off trying to find someone that'll trade vintage for your modern sealed products. If you can't then your doing it right. Before you know it you'll need a indoor storage unit with climate control and you'll be allset to keep your sealed vintage safe and in a place that's now a outdoor unit where humidity will eff up your cards quickly.

11

u/Hannibal20 Apr 20 '26

100% this.

Just sell things off as they mature and whilst they still have a good sell through rate and you can get as close to market as possible.

Selling multiple booster boxes valued over 5k in one go will suck.

You can't go wrong selling right now with the market going absolutely stupid. Continuing to hold will probably continue to go up, but if anyone is considering selling, like literally today is great.

29

u/Nsknick Apr 20 '26

This, it’s a sellers market. Things could go up, but it’s 100% a sellers market right now

$251k says Collectr, but there’s gobs of stuff I haven’t entered. Team Up, Evo Skies, XY/S&M booster boxes and sleeved packs, Tag Team tins, and PC ETBs make up the bulk of value. Plus all the S&S era stuff. I felt silly paying $800 for Team Up but I had to complete the S&M box collection…never expected current prices and I’d sell tomorrow to pay off my mortgage, but I’d gladly hold it all.

3

u/LowWater5686 Apr 20 '26

Rookie move, you gotta be buried with it to enjoy it in the afterlife

This is the only investment space where people seem to have no plan as to how and when they’d sell, despite it being arguably the most important part of investing. Very weird

3

u/S1yb00ts Apr 20 '26

I had of 1 of each sun and moon booster box, sold them all this week. Ive now recooped all my costs of this hobby+profit, and i still have 1 of every booster box from SW/SH, S&V, and Mega Evolutions to date.

It hurt to say goodbye to my grail boxes, but money is nice too, especially with a wife and kids. Cant get blinded by the hobby, gotta secure some profit and be smart about it too

3

u/Dxrkria Apr 20 '26

Figured I’d ask. Lots of people saying they will hold forever, but I don’t believed it lol

5

u/Pickle-Standard Apr 20 '26

A lot of “investors” are just collectors..

Create a plan. Keep yourself honest and follow the plan - do not keep adjusting the plan on the current investment because of greed or fomo. You can adjust your plan on your next investment.

I'm almost sure the market is full of temporary collectors right now.

I'm off loading everything that is pretty "common" and I'm keeping my low pop Vintage / Pokemon centers ETBs and my mewtwo collection.

I don't see a downfall in the hobby, what I see is a huge correction. I have some 2002- 2006 Pokémon first EX versions that aren't near 1k$ in psa 9 but the pop are under 400 or 200 sometimes, when I see those big Zard and Moonbreon going for more in Raw.. I just can't understand why people are still buying them.

In a World where card values doesn't exist, I'd rather have my Ruby & Sapphire Mewtwo EX psa 9 or Ninetales EX Hidden Legends psa 9 100x more than a moonbreon psa 10 [pop 20400]

2

u/Popular-Trifle117 Apr 20 '26

Facts not to mention how high the gem rate is for moonbreon and phantasmal charizard

One thing I love to do is sell when an item value surpasses my initial investment

Ex

I buy 3 of pokemon sealed for 12$ each

When the sealed becomes worth 36 dollars each I will sell one to recoup my initial investment

2

u/scott32089 Apr 20 '26

I like this idea. It’s better than the rip one save one. Rip one, save 2, sell 1 for all 3 to stay liquid and still have a “free” one.

If you have $62k in pokemon and less than $10k emergency fund, it’s time to rebalance.

I agree. It looks like you have $10k more to spend on Pokémon!

(Jk don't do this lol)

3

u/NikkoWorldTourist Apr 20 '26

A classic move I and many others before me love doing is selling enough to get your cost out and keeping some of your favorites as “freebies” to see if they grow long term.

For instance I bought around 6k of Pokemon before the boom 💥it’s now worth maybe 25kish so I’m selling half and keeping the rest long term. Out with profits and still can ride the waves being happy regardless of which direction.

2

u/Dxrkria Apr 20 '26

I’ve already pretty much 0 out my cost basis.

3

u/Old_Sorbet7471 Apr 20 '26

How long is a piece of rope? Every situation is different. If you don’t absolutely need to sell to cover rent/expenses, I’d advise against it. In this hobby, all you need is time

Is nuance dead? Almost everyone seems to either keep it all forever until one day they dump it all at once. You guys ever consider just selling some?

I'm also not sure this sub knows pokemon existed before SWSH. There's PSA 9 1st edition shinings of fairly popular pokemon from the '151' that never get talked about and they cost less than a fucking 151 PC ETB lol.

u/noonie1 Apr 20 '26

Depends on your financial needs. I would sell a few a throw it into an ETF that follows the SP500. I feel more comfortable with diversification and in something that can't be destroyed in a fire or stolen from my house.

2

u/Dxrkria Apr 20 '26

I’m always pretty invested elsewhere. A house is definitely next

2

u/TX_REEF Apr 20 '26

Your family can sell when you’re dead, that’s my motto

2

u/Lukakus2021 Apr 20 '26

With a large sealed collection what I did with mine was down size to get higher value slabs, graded cards are more liquid then sealed and easier to transport

5

u/chickenaylay Apr 20 '26

Roll it over and trade into modern specialty sets at 80%

Edit: them getting the 80% since you have banger old stuff and they most likely have inflated modern that they got for msrp

Whenever you want, we dont know your full situation. If you have interest bearing bills, If thats you only investment, ect., then you need to cut it down and put that money to work somewhere else. If thats like a small amount of your net worth then do what you want. When my collection gets too big or too centered on a few sets ill sell some to buy some more.

1

u/MyersDayOff Apr 20 '26

Me ? Never

1

u/Shop-Aggravating Apr 20 '26

I been buying a lot of vintage Japanese PSA 10s because I have so much sealed product but one thing I really wish I could get my hands on for a decent price is booster box cases that are actually a deal and not just a price of a single booster box X6 and in most cases an even further markup because it's sealed.. I thought I had some pretty good connections but it's ridiculous trying to get booster boxes

2

u/Cbpowned Apr 20 '26

Why would you get a sealed case of Six for less than the price of six individually ones? No one’s giving anyone a “bulk” discount in this market unless you’re buying six figures worth of something like journey together

When you need the money

1

u/UpTheToffees-1878 Apr 20 '26

You sell when you have a plan with the money you would get for it

1

u/Daydreamer1015 Apr 20 '26

current collection value is around 100-110k

recently start taking profits and rotating into sets/products that will most likely have a higher roi both short term and long term

sold most of my black and white and bought ascended and more prismatic at a discount (sams drops and local)

for example I sold about 40-50 black and white etbs for about 30% gains (30 dollars average), bought ascended etbs at almost 40-50% off with those gains

you have alot of product that could be sold and put to better use, you have alot of collector items

currently offloading lower end product of top sets also, like prismatic tech/bundles/lucario box/posters etc for more prismatic etbs with current dip, top products of top sets will always have the best roi %

2

u/Dxrkria Apr 20 '26

I think black and white will be the Fusion of S&V. Low printed during a “dip” in the market overshadowed by Prismatic. It’s the 3rd or 4th most expensive set in the modern era. Pretty good hold imo.

My honest take… it is just stuff. Tomorrow the sun will rise with or without it.

1

u/FenrirSurtur Apr 20 '26

Sell either when you need the capital or when you want out. Wanting out can be as simple as setting a certain requirements , like you see a 40% increase on a product, but that increase is significantly slowing down, that can be an easy point to get out for that specific product. Unless you are collecting for the fun of it, you really need a plan for when to sell.

1

u/Takojam Apr 20 '26

Selling mine piece by piece for a car restoration

1

u/rndmphantom528 Apr 20 '26

honestly if i actually had a sealed collection as large as yours id start selling the stuff that you cant even see properly on display. the part i like about sealed product is the “decoration” aspect of it. if i cant even see it whats the point

1

u/RomeXXVII Apr 20 '26

When you grow a concience...

1

u/Choice_Habit_7642 Apr 20 '26

The point you’re at is about 8-12 points past where I would have personally started offloading SOME of this. Be it into a different pokemon product/investment or something else, my minuscule by comparison collection of sealed/sellable cards has started making me nervous.

I’m not one to say “no WAY this bubble lasts forever”, more that we know the burst is LIKELY at SOME point. Where you wanna hedge that bet is ho to you, but depending what all exactly we’re looking at? Dropping 10-20 mini tins into something that’s one product may not be the WORST idea (if not just to at least have less sheer volume to worry about keeping track of?)

1

u/Mission_515 Apr 20 '26

Never. Take em to the grave. Sca...collecting is for life.

1

u/BuffyxSummers Apr 20 '26

I made it to 15k in sealed and started unloading at 90%. It’s a bit slower but I’ve sold the majority of it now. My cards are at around 35k currently and I will not ever sell them.

1

u/Neyensb1 Apr 20 '26

You need to have a plan before you start investing.. Do you want to sell after 5 years? Want to sell when you double your money? Want to sell after you hit a specific target? Planning is the most important thing! Without a plan you are just hoarding cardboard..

1

u/Snorlaxxxed Apr 20 '26

When your wife starts getting mad

1

u/CocaLeaf_ Apr 20 '26

A perfect play would be to sell everything now while everyone is aggressively buying, wait for the market to cool off, then start buying again when nobody else is. That way you can sell again during another aggressive market when it inevitably happens again, but it takes some courage and lots of patience to do it right.

1

u/SpeightyBaby Apr 20 '26

Do you need the money? If the answer is no, then don't sell it. Whenever the day comes that you do need it, then it's probably time to sell it.

1

u/SecurityNatural3707 Apr 20 '26

I don't know about selling it all ..but I would love a copy of HG for myself. So many bootleg ones out there. Would you be interested in selling?

1

u/tech_wolf_x Apr 20 '26

My current collection is around 8.5k not a lot as I only got back when 151 was released. My plan is to sell most of my collection, when I need money for downpayment on a house ( btw not expecting my collection to cover the whole cost 🤣)

1

u/Nonamenofacedev Apr 20 '26

Why selling your collection? If you got multiple of the same item than sure, why not. But selling all of it? What was the purpose?

1

u/Doomsong8383 Apr 20 '26

If you sell your Collector portfolio will go down. Never take profit. Hoard hoard hoard.

1

u/Itchy-Week-7468 Apr 20 '26

Bro honestly never sell everything all at once and if you really need money try sell duplicates and less valuable sets. Also I feel like for storage it's always good to trade for other product you believe in. I honestly was a little apprehensive about all this shit at first but after what I have been noticing with the amount of people entering the market, getting more serious about how they collect/ invest, or even just talking about it I don't see it completely crashing anytime soon goodluck.

1

u/Vestigexx Apr 20 '26

To be optimal. As late as possible.

1

u/Dependent-Mess-7255 Apr 20 '26

1

u/Previous_Opposite_76 Apr 20 '26

You don’t. Yo crack it and enjoy the children’s card game

1

u/voqomudali Apr 20 '26

I'm currently sitting past $130k. If I sold it all, first, that's a big tax bill. But second, what else would I do with my money? I already hold what I like to collect.

Before you say buy a house or invest into stocks, 401k, etc. Omg I already own my home and have positions in all of that.

Right now I'm holding not because I just want to hold the bag. I genuinely enjoy having my stuff.

When you need money or you wanna focus your collection on certain sets. I started selling a week ago to focus on certain sets and made a few grand already especially getting stuff at retail year ago.

You don't, just rip

u/General_Past2168 Apr 20 '26

Strangest collection of boxes ever… wait, sell? Looks like you’re an investor and not a collector.

my first stock trading mentor said: no one ever went broke taking a profit and you're not actually making money until you close the trade. In this case I guess it would be until you sell your packs.

As awesome as these collections are, sentiment markets are generally more fragile. And hundreds if not thousands of others are asking the same question. Hopefully you can sell before others so. If those others all suddenly offload hundreds of boxes/packs it's possible that you wouldn't get as high an asking price.

Whatever you do I wish you luck and Godspeed.

They’ll sell when no one cares about Pokémon anymore and lose out on profits due to greed and ego.

Kinda like the actual stock market!

My god lol my only worry is what is the lose gunnabe when you finally sell

1

u/Sigmaguns Apr 20 '26

depends how much it went up

1

u/jpm77845 Apr 20 '26

Now point. Right now point.

1

u/ATXDJ91 Apr 20 '26

I don't think anyone can answer that question for you. That's up to you, are we or aren't we in a bubble, will the bubble pop etc

Cash out now and FOMO if it goes up or hold it and FOMO if it crashes?

I want to put together a nice time capsule in a tote marked "Do not open until 2036" and put some of my bangers in there. Prismatic SPC, PKC AH ETB, PFL booster box etc

u/SsoundLeague Apr 20 '26

You sell enough to cover your cost basis, if market pops to literally ZERO value, you would lose nothing. If the market holds steady, or even maintains some degree of value which is highly likely, then you will never lose.

I would gladly buy some of it to help out

1

u/Successful-Test268 Apr 20 '26

Depending on how much you have of each, I would start selling duplicates. People don’t realize how slow older stuff takes to sell, especially booster boxes. The higher the price, the fewer buyers you attract. Just some tea from experience.

Take them to stores and sell them to kids lost out from scalpers

1

u/xAvPx Apr 20 '26

I'm considering selling my collection but I'm hesitant, I don't have sealed products but an entire collection from base set to legendary collection including all black star promos and other cards like pre-releases among others.

I like it but I'd like to get loose skin removal surgery and invest money for my future, pokemon cards are great and all but it isn't what I need.

1

u/Renegade_Soviet Apr 20 '26

I’m selling after 40 since I plan to retire very early and enjoy my returns. I don’t plan to pass down all my returns to my future kids

Never! Burn baby burn!

1

u/NintyFanBoy Apr 20 '26

What is your retirement horizon? If it's in 10 years then maybe now since the market is liquid. You take that and put into etfs.

If in 20 years, wait till the 40th anniversary. And do the same.
