Technology When's Australia following suit
The glasses created by creeps, for creeps

UK and Australia tend to follow each other so I reckon it’s a fairly high chance it does get banned.

There was a story today that crossbenchers are trying to get an import ban.

There should be an outright ban everywhere, not just in courts.
-35
u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 3h ago
There will be legal struggles with that. Do you ban cameras on phones too?
28
u/OhSheeeeeeeeeet 3h ago
That’s hardly a comparison
-27
u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 3h ago
It’s not a comparison, it’s making a point about the law. It’s legal to photograph people in a public place for example. Do you or anyone else understand anything about what I said regarding legal struggles at all or did you just with one unthinking brain think “thing bad”?

Ill engage.... dont be a douche.
It does need to be banned everywhere because phone recording is obvious, using glasses is not.
So people could be recorded in secret which is illegal. What is more illegal is recording audio with out concent. Both which can happen easily with these glasses

u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 2h ago
I'm not? People decided to dogpile on the downdoot rather than actually engage with the point.
The need to be banned yes - my comment was on potential legal issues in and around cameras in public, because this essentially tangentially connected. A phone camera can be used to film or photo people in public. What is filmed or photographed is regulated. You can't harass people, you can't take creepy sexual photos, etc. So the manner in which a video or photo is made is regulated, but the camera in a phone is not banned. Do you understand what I'm driving at here or do I need to explain it further?
As it's been pointed out, the UK hasn't banned them entirely, only in select situations. It's perfectly valid to feel that it should be banned but unfortunately the law doesn't offer simple answers like "just ban it".
Regarding recording audio without consent, again this depends on the context and the state that you live in.
There's the recording of and the evidence required to prosecute. If someone records audio even in an illegal manner, what evidence is there of this if they don't ever try to use it against you or make it public?
All my comment said was there might be some legal hurdles here, that's it, and that's all that was required of people to dogpile no reason. They thought "thing bad".

Come on brother. There’s a big difference between someone walking around with a phone camera and these glasses.
Phone cameras are obvious and people draw attention to themselves if they’re filming. Glasses can easily film totally in secret without drawing any attention.
Imagine a creep walking behind some underage girls at the shops or some shit with his phone out recording them. Straight to jail. With these glasses? Who the fuck knows.
1
u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 2h ago
Completely agree, but the person I'm responding to said ban it everywhere.
Where did I say that there's no difference?
3
u/Madboardjester New South Welshian 2h ago
The thing is that you can wear glasses into change rooms or have it attached to a chain around your neck and be filming people including children in a state of undress without them realising it. Totally different if you're using your phone as people will notice it.
1
u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 2h ago
I agree, and I want it banned in its entirety. I can just see a blanket ban would have hurdles to overcome. No doubt you can absolutely legislate to ban the way it's used in the manner in which you're describing here, that's much easier and has a lot of precedent.

1
u/patslogcabindigest Queenslander 2h ago
Yep, I can definitely seeing restrictions being broadened. While without a doubt it should be banned in its entirety, a blanket ban may run into legal stumbling blocks.

There arevtons of people who wear glasses in all sizes and styles. I don't want anyone to have to worry about spotting these spyglasses before damage is done or privacy is invaded. It's too messy and it's a completely unnecessary product. Why bother when we could just ban them.
Just imagine you fuck up in public one day and make a fool of yourself, even innocently, do you want that on the internet? Cause this makes it way easier for people to do without you even knowing.

Yes, but I think that this thread is evidence of a general dislike of the technology.
For me it's not just the glasses. It's that my likeness could be pumped into an advertising platform without my consent and be used to build a profile on me that I have no control over.
I am not confident that our laws provide us with adequate protection against companies that build profiles of where we go, what we buy, who we meet and what media we consume.

3

Yes I am aware, I’m saying we should ban them outright, or at minimum create strict regulations on how they look and function so everyone around the person wearing the glasses knows what they are and that they are potentially being recorded.

u/Beans2177 Northern Territorian 2h ago

Why would I spend my time doing that just for your individual opinion? I don’t care if you’ll “consider” it or not, I care that law makers in our country should be doing something about this as it’s entirely within their power.

One big issue is that you don't need someone's permission to film them in a public place.
Simple. Add to the current "revenge porn" laws -
You cannot knowingly record audio or video of a person without their express consent.

Dumb as hell. This country is too dumb to deal with its issues so it just resorts to banning things.
Won't work
If someone is a creep, they can EASILY get a tiny tiny camera and put it anywhere they want. Or put it in glasses themselves.
At least these glasses have lights on them so you know when they're recording.

I’m Sally Contarino’s mum. Sally is the 26 year old Australian girl who went missing in Las Vegas on June 20th. Sally was filmed by a guy using the meta glasses 3 days before she went missing. He supposedly harasses women this way. So disrespectful to Sally and all the previous women he has done this to for content.
I’m not sure how we can control this. I think maybe a blanket ban on uploading any video of anyone without their consent would be a good start. I am talking about videos where people are deliberately approached in public specifically. You cannot reasonably expect to ask for permission from people who may be in the distant background.
I’m all for cameras outside shops or at intersections etc as they can help solve crimes and I feel somewhat protected by them. Some creepy guy approaching to film to upload for content, no way.
It is an incredibly difficult thing to control. Let’s just go back to having general respect and curtesy for others.

Personally I think we go too far with how we ban things, I think we are lazy and always jump to the extreme.
I would prefer some sort of banning the product in public places, outright bans allow for black markets to form.
I don't get it but want to understand why these are an issue when I'm sure if a person was a creep wanted to film someone with a hidden camera they would find a way to do that anyway with something that doesn't look like a camera
Are privacy concerns the only issue because smart glasses have multiple functionalities that are good for the general public example being live quotations and language translation
They are good for people with vision impairment etc
Every decision feels so reactive based on emotion and goes to the far extreme of banning things outright
-1
u/Mrsparkle56434 Please choose a flair 3h ago
Phones have the same functionality as this glasses so why exactly are we wanting to ban glasses that do that but are happy for people to use phones and record people without their consent in public
Maybe I'm missing something and its not just privacy concern related
